No Deep Kissing
Class of 2020 Sculpture MFA Exhibition Group 2
March 22 – 28, 2021
Delayed by a year and far overdue, the second half of No Deep Kissing, Yale School of Art’s Sculpture Group II graduates of 2020 Thesis show opens Monday, March 22nd @ 32 Edgewood. Featuring new works and installations from Genevieve Goffman, Lauren Lee, Anna Alvina Miller, Randi Renate, David Roy, and Alex Zak, this exhibition celebrates not only the culmination of the artists’ graduate school careers, but also the continued dedication to their practices in a year of great upheaval and duress.
Even in the quietest of times, graduating into the world can be a difficult and disorienting task—we often change in ways we don’t expect with people whose faces are only recently becoming familiar to us. But now, as the world slowly re-emerges from the carnage of a year isolated and fearful, we see the work still persists - though not as we may remember it. Let us begin the process of finding our communities in their wholeness once more and hold space together, even if the rule of no deep kissing remains.

Week 7
When it comes to photography I can talk your ear off. I grew up around cameras. Being around cameras gave me an interest in them from a young age. I love taking pictures. None of them are very good, but they seem amazing for a time. My dad takes all the pictures for the website of his job (and edits them), and he has had this job longer than I have been alive. Being around cameras gave me an interest in them from a young age. Film, on the other hand, I know very little about. All I know is that they were multiple pictures taken one right after the other, but as cameras advanced that changed. After reading the material, I learned that George Eastman created cinematography and Eadweard Muybridge used a lot of cameras to capture things in motion. Computers have also opened many more doors for the photography and filmmaking genre as a whole. Take horror filmmaking. They use special effects to make their effects better. Natalia Almada uses film to remember her late sister, that passed from drowning before Natalia could really make any memories of her. She has her parents record their voices answering her questions about her sister. She films many different things that fit the mood of her video, like a pool and pictures of her. The first film, "Thunder Road", is about an officer who has recently lost his mom. He has to give a eulogy alone because his siblings couldn't make it. He comes up acting awkward but holding his composure well. He starts talking about his memories with her, and he breaks down. He then mentions that his mom used to sing "Thunder Road" by Bruce Springsteen to him. That was his mom's favorite song. He starts singing and dancing to it for her for the last time. It is fully choreographed. He chokes through most of the lyrics because it is very hard for him to lose his mom. While doing so, he embarrasses his daughter, who decides to get up halfway through. He starts telling his daughter to sit down, just to pick her up and break down again a few seconds later. In the end, he goes to sit back down with her and she does not want to sit next to him. This really gets me because I have a fear of losing my parents because they are up there in age. The second film I can't even begin to understand. I have no clue what the message was or what this film was trying to accomplish. The relevant artist I chose was Richard Prince. His photographs are amazing. They are so good that his Instagram photos get printed and put up in a gallery (shown below). His models are absolutely gorgeous and his eye for perfection is amazing. Upon reading more about him, he seems to be not a very nice guy. Many people say he is a jerk and he was sued by one of his models.

The full synthesis of art and science, toward which all workers labor, is to be found in the resurrection of the dead. The aim of all labor is to overcome time.
— Alexander, The Visionary
In a time beyond time, in a time with no future, in a time when the perpetual utopic present cradles the past in its arms, your childhood pet lives on the moon.
During the Space Race the United States and USSR hurled many helpless animals into space. But four who were thought to be dead survived and thrived on the moon.
Alone on the moon they developed a science far beyond our comprehension.
When they returned to earth they risked everything to defeat death and halt the grinding violence engine of human progress and resurrect every pet and bring them home to the moon.
Welcome to Redwall, But For Your Dead Pets Only.
It’s the perfect timeless moon commune.
