Arsenic and Old Lace (Movie Review) | Fun & Captivating
When I went to see Arsenic and Old Lace I didn't expect to be as delightfully entertained as I was, there's a reason why it's a classic movie fan favorite. Check my review #ArsenicAndOldLace #ClassicComedy #FilmReview #CaryGrant #ClassicFilm #MustWatch

I kind of knew the name, I’d heard about him, even though I thought his first name was Gary. This 1944 movie is amazing, I went in blind, I knew the time of the showing – yes I…

A Christmas Carol Holiday Season: The Complete List
It took me the entire Christmas season, from just after Thanksgiving to the day of Epiphany, but I managed to watch and write about almost every adaptation of A Christmas Carol I knew.
Or rather, every version set in the original time period (which means no Scrooged, among other versions), and that doesn't add excessive darkness or R-rated themes (which means I left out the 2019 Guy Pearce miniseries).
Here they are:
A Christmas Carol (1910 silent short – Scrooge played by Marc McDermott)
Old Scrooge (1913 silent film – Scrooge played by Seymour Hicks)
A Christmas Carol (1914 silent short – Scrooge played by Charles Rock)
Scrooge (1923 silent short – Scrooge played by Russell Thorndike)
Scrooge (1935 film – Scrooge played by Seymour Hicks)
A Christmas Carol (1938 film – Scrooge played by Reginald Owen)
Scrooge (1951 film – Scrooge played by Alastair Sim)
A Christmas Carol (1954 TV musical – Scrooge played by Fredric March)
The Stingiest Man in Town (1956 TV musical – Scrooge played by Basil Rathbone)
Tales from Dickens: A Christmas Carol (1959 TV series episode – Scrooge played by Basil Rathbone)
Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol (1962 animated TV musical – Scrooge/Mr. Magoo voiced by Jim Backus)
A Christmas Carol (1969 animated TV film – Scrooge voiced by Ron Haddrick)
Scrooge (1970 musical film – Scrooge played by Albert Finney)
A Christmas Carol (1971 animated short – Scrooge voiced by Alastair Sim)
A Christmas Carol (1977 TV film – Scrooge played by Michael Hordern)

Mr Evershed x Student!reader - run the town
Tumblr media
Part 2:
He didn’t know what to do, police were crawling everywhere around Ackley on high alert, people were being escorted home if they belonged to certain families and there was no sign of you returning to the school.
You uniform had been returned by a few of the men that worked for you, and he didn’t even get a chance to ask any questions.
“This is getting out of hand Mandy..” he whispered.
They were watching as some police officers walked through the school on high alert.
“We can’t do anything, this is way beyond us and we can’t get involved.”
“All we have to do is get (Y/N) to come back right? Call all of this off?”
“In theory, but that’s easier said than down. Their family is on a rampage at the minute, and they’re not going to back down unless (Y/N) gives the word.”
Mr Evershed sighed heavily, and he shook his head.
“I’m going to find them.”
“You can’t! Are you insane!?” Mrs Carter hissed.
“This is getting ridiculous Mandy! A teenager playing mob boss? Absolutely not.”
Mr Evershed walked away and grabbed his jacket and he pulled it on, getting in his car he tried to think about where he would find you.
He decided to try your house first.
It was a nice house, not too fancy, but definitely bigger compared to most in the town.
Parking outside, he made his way up to the door and rang the bell and there was no response from the door, but a neighbour did peak her head out.
“They’re not in love!” She called.
“Do you know where I can find them?” He asked.
He walked over to the fence and she did the same thing, and he noticed a sharply dressed man stood by the front door to her house.
“I’m sorry, I don’t. Maybe my husband does? Garry!”
The man walked over and stood in front of the fence as well, looking the teacher up and down.
“What’s your business?” He asked.
“I’m looking for (Y/N), I’m their teacher. Mr Evershed?”
“You asking me if that’s your name or you telling me that’s your name?” Garry asked.
“Telling you, sorry. Do you know where I can find them?”
“Yes, I do. It’s none of your concern however where they are or what they’re doing.”
Mr Evershed sighed, gesturing to the police car that was slowly crawling down the street.
“Do you really want all of this to carry on? The police? The violence?”
“Not my business what they’re doing, not anyone’s in fact. (Y/N) won’t stand by and watch their family be disrespected or hurt.”
“And they’re going to be arrested if this carries on!”
“They’ll be fine.”
Mr Evershed shook his head.
“Fine, I’ll find them on my own.”
He walked away and got back into his car, trying to figure out where else he could find you.
Then he remembered when you were bunking school, and he made his way to the bar and pulled up outside.
Getting out he walked to the door and found someone holding it open, gesturing for him to go in.
He drew a small breath, trying to Steel his nerves and he walked inside the dimly lit bar.
It was nice, classy, small tables and booths that held lanterns in the middle.
A few were occupied but no one paid him any mind as he walked in a little more and looked around.
“You’ll want the back.” The bar tender spoke.
Mr Evershed turned to him.
“Sorry?”
“They’re in the back, and here, take this.”
The bar tender handed him a glass and pointed to the door, and he walked over, pushing it open to reveal a small room and you were sat on a chair behind the desk.
You didn’t bother to look, by Lewis walked over and took the glass from him, setting it down in front of you.
You leant forward, clasping your hands together as you looked at the other chair and so did he.
“Sam?”
“Mr Evershed?”
Both Sam and Mr Evershed looked at one another and you pointed to the teacher, gesturing a chair against the wall.
“I will be with you in a moment.”
“We need to talk, now.”
“And we will. In a minute. Sit down Mr Evershed you’re wasting time just standing there it will not make me address you any faster.”
Owen and Lewis looked at him and nodded their heads and he rolled his eyes, sitting down on the chair and you looked at Sam.
“All I’m asking is for some protection please, they’re furious with me (Y/N).”
“Because you did the right thing and turned your mother into the police for what she was forcing you to do?”
Sam nodded her head.
“I.. I don’t have money though…”
You leant back in your chair and hummed a little, picking up the glass you took a sip from it and set it back down.
“I don’t like that whiskey much, it’s not so bad though, what do you think Sam?”
You slid the glass over to her and Mr Evershed quickly stood up and took it from her.
“Absolutely not.”
You looked up at him, a small smirk spreading across your lips.
“Give it a smell, tell me what it is.”
He smelt the glass and looked at you, setting the glass back down.
“Pepsi, really?”
You shrugged a little.
“I find it funny and I am not stupid enough to order a proper drink when I know you’re on your way.”
You turned your attention back to Sam.
“Right, well whatever dodgy deal is going on here it’s not happening.”
“Sir you don’t understand they’re after me.” Sam said.
“And we can deal with that.”
Sam gestured to you.
“Not as good as they can.”
“I thought you lot hated each other.”
You looked at him.
“I never had much an issue with Sam herself, just her family you see. Look, I can offer you protection if that’s what you want Sam, someone to walk you to and from school, keep an eye out while you’re out and about.”
“Really?”
You nodded your head and stood up, gesturing for them to follow you and you took them both back through to the bar.
“I’m not unreasonable, you did the right thing at the end of the day. You’re above that petty lot, you got a good head on your shoulders, it’s admirable really.”
You looked around and walked over to a table.
“Ethan, she’s under your watch you got it. You make sure she is safe and unharmed.”
“Absolutely, have a seat, let’s chat about what exactly it is you want me to do.” Ethan said.
Sam sat down and you walked back to the office, grabbing your blazer from the back of the chair you pulled it on and did the two buttons up, smoothing the fabric down.
“Can we talk now?” Mr Evershed asked.
You looked up at him and nodded your head, and he followed you out of the bar.
Looking behind, he notice four men behind you, and two walked in front of you, falling in line, on next to you, one next to him.
“This is unsettling, do they have to be here?”
“You’d understand if you ran a business like ours, protection is key sir, one must never go without a bodyguard or six.”
“You knew they’d follow us.” He said.
“Oh of course I did Mr Evershed, just like when I was at school they were waiting outside the gates too.”
“They were.”
“You really think I’d go anywhere alone?”
“Well.. no. This isn’t what we’re supposed to be talking about.”
You looked at him.
“What are we taking about them sir?”
“You.”
“What about me?”
He gestured to the police parked across the road, obviously following you.
“This! It needs to stop, now.”
“Mr Evershed, if it weren’t my family running this town, someone else would, you’re aware of that right? Be thankful it is mine, we’re a reasonable lot.”
He shook his head.
“There’s nothing reasonable about a teenager playing mafia (Y/N) this is serious business and you shouldn’t be involved.”
You walked into a store and he followed you, and all but two of the guards followed and scattered themselves.
You began to browse the selection of blazers and shirts.
“I know this is a serious business, why do you think I’m running it? My father raised me well, taught me how to run it.”
“Did he teach you to be a thug?”
You looked up at your teacher.
“I am no thug.”
“You’re having people beaten down in the streets (Y/N)!”
“That was two people and they played a role in killing my father.”
“It’s illegal.”
“They’re alive aren’t they?”
You picked up a blazer and set yours aside, trying it on and looked at yourself.
“Not my colour.”
You put it back and carried on looking.
“I’m being serious (Y/N) come back to school and quit this before it goes too far.”
You looked up at him, staring him in the eyes with a gaze that would drop people immediately if looks could kill.
“Do you know why my father was in the business he was in Mr Evershed.”
“No.”
“He was in it because he was good at it, and I’m good at it. I am not some mindless thug that hurts innocent people. Yes, we offer protection and we do accept contracts on bad people, but we’ve never taken it further than a beat down.”
“And that man from the funeral?”
“If I remember correctly he fell down the stairs a few times, and out of a window funnily enough. Very clumsy man.”
You picked a blazer and payed for it, handing it to one of the guards you put yours back on and left the shop making your way back to the bar.
“You’re making a mistake! You’re doing bad things all because what? You were born into it? Surely you can’t think this will be your whole life?” He asked.
You stopped outside of the bar.
“What other life is there?”
“A life of honesty (Y/N)! One where you don’t act like you own the world.”
You hummed a little.
“That does sound boring doesn’t it? I enjoy the life I live, the freedom I have. I love it Mr Evershed, I breathe it. This is what I was born to do.”
“So you were born to be a criminal and nothing else?” He asked.
“Criminal is such a harsh word. I prefer morally questionable.” You smirked.
“This isn’t a game! You could get arrested or worse! I’m trying to help you!”
You shook your head.
“I don’t need help! I won’t be arrested because even the police are scared to touch me why do you think they’re sat in that car?!”
You grabbed a rock from a plant pot and walked over, standing in front of the car you threw it and it cracked the window.
“(Y/N)!”
Mr Evershed marched over and he watched as the officers got out, inspecting the window, and they turned to you.
“It was an ugly window.” One said.
“Yeah, now we can get it changed.”
They called for a tow truck and you looked at Mr Evershed, raising your hands.
“They cannot lay a single finger on me and they know it, because they’d be fired before they even walked into that station. I run this town Mr Evershed! And I love it.”
With that, you grinned at him and walked away back into the bar and he stared at the police car.
Had you lost your mind?
Were you always like this?
Did he give up trying to help you or did he keep trying?
It didn’t feel right leaving you in a life like this, especially so young, but he had his doubts about being able to pull you away from it
