FEATURE: A Guide to the Re:ZERO Witches
Tumblr media
Throughout Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-, the threat of Satella, the Witch of Envy, has loomed over everything our protagonists do. From the Witch Cult that worships her to people demonizing Emilia for looking like her, it has been clear she wields power that is so frightening it influences everything in the world — even when she is not there. However, this season we were introduced to even more Witches, completing the cycle of seven deadly sins, and although they technically died about 400 years ago, Subaru has witnessed first-hand how powerful they are.
Let’s go over each of the Witches we’ve met and get a refresher on what kinds of powers each of them has displayed so far.
  Carmilla
Tumblr media
The Witch of Lust, Carmilla doesn’t look physically intimidating; she is polite and timid when she meets Subaru. However, she is seemingly able to emotionally manipulate people by impersonating those they love, shown when she almost tricked Subaru into believing she was Rem during the second trial. She also has an ability called “Faceless Bride” that can cause people in her vicinity to forget how to breathe without even being aware that they are dying. Her abilities may not all be negative, though, as she also uses her Authority to help Subaru realize the love others have for him.
  Daphne
Tumblr media
Subaru can attribute many of his problems thus far to the enigmatic casket girl Daphne, the Witch of Gluttony. After all, she is the creator of the Mabeasts, the various monsters that have caused trouble throughout the world of Re:ZERO. Most notably, she personally made the Three Great Mabeasts — the White Whale, Great Rabbit, and Black Serpent. That may end up helping Subaru out in the long run, however; as their creator, she also knows their weaknesses, and has already given Subaru a hint as to how to defeat the seemingly infinite and unstoppable Great Rabbit. While we haven’t seen Daphne use it herself, the Authority of Gluttony was infamously used by Sin Archbishop Lye Batenkaitos to “eat” Rem’s name, causing all but Subaru to forget she even existed.
  Echidna
Tumblr media
Everyone’s favorite Witch of Greed in search of immortality, Echidna may be a prominent force in Subaru and Emilia’s life right now, but we haven’t actually seen her use her powers much yet. We do know she presides over the Trials and seems to keep the souls of the other deceased Witches with her. However, we’ve seen what her Authority can do somewhat indirectly. The Authority of Greed seems to have time-manipulating powers, which the Sin Archbishop Regulus Corneas has been seen using to move objects and attack others like Pandora and Petelgeuse, as well as defensively to block blows in his battle against Crusch.
  Minerva
Tumblr media
The hot-blooded Witch of Wrath with a heart of gold, Minerva seems to be physically strong, making big superhero-style entrances and causing destruction wherever she lands. Contrary to that first impression, though, her powers seem to be of the healing variety — she uses her punches to put Subaru back together after Typhon removes his arm and causes his body to fall apart. Other than that, we haven’t met anyone who uses her Authority in the real world yet, so while she is surely threatening, the true extent of her powers has yet to be revealed.
  Satella
Tumblr media
The most infamous Witch of all, Satella controls the Authority of Envy, but despite her reputation amongst the cast of Re:ZERO, little is known about her powers. We can infer some things, though. She seems to have some control over time, as she is the one who granted Subaru Return by Death. She is also capable of controlling Subaru’s actions to some extent, stopping him whenever he attempts to talk about Return by Death. In battle, she can manipulate shadows and use them to attack her enemies, such as when she incapacitated Garfiel in one of Subaru’s recent failed loops. We’ve yet to meet an Archbishop who uses her Authority to get a better idea of her skills.
  Sekhmet
Tumblr media
Sekhmet — the Witch of Sloth — lives up to her title. In the time we’ve spent with her so far, she has hardly lifted a finger, let alone taken the time to stand up. That hasn’t stopped her from displaying some intense power, though; she is somehow able to almost crush Subaru without even moving. Attacking from far away seems to be her Authority’s gimmick, in fact. We’ve seen Petelguese, who we recently saw inherit her Authority in Emilia’s Trial, use his “Unseen Hand” ability, which takes the form of hands that Petelguese can maneuver to attack his opponents. Subaru has used a similar ability, which he calls “Invisible Providence,” that also seems to take the form of a hand, though his version seems much weaker, only materializing as one hand at a time thus far.
  Typhon
Tumblr media
Last but not least is Typhon, the small but deadly Witch of Pride. Typhon’s powers are more abstract than those of the other Witches, in concept, but their consequences are no less destructive. When she meets Subaru, she removes one of his arms without him even noticing, noting that since he felt no pain he must not be guilty of any grave sins. Soon after, she caused Subaru’s entire body — and later, Minerva’s arm — to shatter into pieces, which she explains happens because he feels guilt. Note that this seems to be different from actual guilt; Typhon is surprised he shattered, because as far as she can tell he’s “not a bad guy.” While this isn’t explicitly explained, it seems clear that her powers are based on some kind of judgment, both for sins her target has actually committed and ones they feel responsible for, even if they actually aren’t. Unfortunately, the person capable of wielding her Authority has yet to appear in the story, so that is all we have to go on, but it seems like the most unique power of them all.
Tumblr media
And there we have it, every Witch in Re:ZERO, as well as what we know about their powers thus far. The world of Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- is vast and complex, and as more mysteries are revealed, the more questions we have to think about. Hopefully, this refresher has helped put these complex characters into perspective as we head into the Season 2 finale.

POINT/COUNTERPOINT: Why Do Subaru and Emilia Succeed While Other Couples Fail?
Tumblr media
Editor's Note: This is the first of dueling articles analyzing the best relationship of Re:ZERO. Rem fans check in tomorrow for Part 2.
The characters in Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- go through a lot of hardships, but there's one that doesn't get enough attention: It sure is hard to fall in love, huh? We start the series by having Subaru meet and fall for Emilia right away, which predictably doesn't go well for him for a while. As the series goes on we find plenty of similarly one-sided relationships: Roswaal to Echidna, Ram to Roswaal, Garfiel to Ram, Rem to Subaru. Why are all these characters getting caught up in unrequited love? Well, it turns out they all have one thing in common: unrealistic expectations.
Infatuation is a strong feeling. When Subaru meets Emilia for the first time, he is instantly head over heels — obviously because she is beautiful, but also because she is kind and assertive. She also happens to be exactly his type, if the light novel merch of girls with silver hair and purple eyes we see in his room is any indication. Subaru immediately puts Emilia on a pedestal, vowing to protect her at all costs and defending her against all criticism. Early on, his efforts backfire spectacularly as Emilia feels constrained by his possessiveness and showers of praise, giving him a piece of her mind on more than one occasion. His heart's in the right place, but by dedicating himself to the image of Emilia he has in his head instead of the real person in front of him, he stops short of ever being able to really connect with her and ends up inadvertently pushing her away. By performatively acting as her “knight,” he isn’t winning over her real feelings as much as trying to blackmail her with his “good deeds” into loving him back.
Tumblr media
Here's the thing, though: Just about everyone in this show has this problem. They may express it in different ways — not all of them are stupid enough to get into an actual fight with Julius like Subaru did — but the core issue of seeing their romantic interest as much more than they actually are remains. Garfiel attempts to woo Ram by showering her in compliments, despite Ram clearly not being the type to appreciate all the unsolicited comments. Ram in turn is slavishly devoted to Roswaal, valuing his life over her own despite him clearly seeing her as little more than a tool to be used for his grand plans. Which is ironic, because Roswaal himself has an attachment to Echidna that is itself based on an uneven level of care he doesn't see, either. Like in all of her relationships, Echidna is in it for herself, will say anything to anyone if it gets her closer to what she wants — and Roswaal fell for it hook, line, and sinker.
But no one in Re:ZERO has it as bad or well-documented as Ram and her undying, possibly misplaced devotion to Subaru. Yes, everyone loves the blue-haired maid, it's undeniable that she is kind and deserves all the happiness in the world. But her image of Subaru is skewed intensely toward him being a more selfless, heroic person than he actually is. This is a natural result of Return by Death allowing Subaru to more or less choose the most ideal outcomes in every situation, so it's not really Rem's fault that she sees him this way, but it does both of them no favors. Rem's offer of love to Subaru, if he had accepted, would have cut his growth as a person short, because it would have absolved him of feeling any responsibility for the mistakes he made that led to that moment. Similarly, Rem is a very capable person herself; the only thing holding her back is her guilt toward her sister driving most of her decisions, and shifting that devotion to Subaru instead would only move that problem laterally when what she really needs is to spend more emotional resources caring for herself. As heartbreaking as it is, Subaru rejecting her was the best thing for both of them at that moment.
Tumblr media
Why, then, do Emilia and Subaru end up working out so well, when earlier it seemed like Subaru was just blowing it with her? The answer lies in the core of Subaru's evolution in the story so far: reconciling his desire for everyone's respect with the reality that he — and no one else for that matter — will ever be perfect. Growing up in the shadow of his dad caused him to develop a complex about his failures, ironically leading to him shutting himself out from the outside world. Subaru found the pressure so high that he thought it would be easier to try to fail so spectacularly that his parents would disown him, freeing him from his expectations of himself. As he realized during his Trial, though, his parents cared more about his well-being than any perceived success, and he finally felt empowered to move forward in life knowing he can, and will, make mistakes, and that he isn't a failure for it.
The kind of strain he was under because of the pressure he felt to live up to his dad mirrors the strain he put Emilia under by insisting she could do no wrong. By realizing he could be a worthwhile person without being perfect, he fully realizes that everyone else, including Emilia, is imperfect too. When the time comes again to root for her as she goes through the Trials herself, he learns from these revelations and doesn't try to sugarcoat the hardship she will be going through. Instead, he sympathizes with her, helping her acknowledge that she might not yet have the courage to face the past that pains her to think about, or the future that threatens to scare her further. He offers her support as a friend, telling her he believes in not only the person she is, but the even greater person she can become, warts and all.
This respect for the person she is, not the person Subaru imagines her to be, allows him to finally get through to Emilia. And for Emilia, that grounded support — not the kind from a parental figure like Puck or an uncritical retainer like Subaru used to be — is something she's never really had before, giving her the strength to carry on. Emilia reciprocates, playfully criticizing Subaru while propping him up and encouraging him to do his best as he faces his own hurdles. That mutual respect is the foundation of a real relationship, one that helps them both to save Sanctuary in their own ways, knowing that they have each other to lean on when times get tough. This culminated with Subaru officially becoming Emilia's knight at the end of Season 2, a moment that feels earned because of the real bond that has finally formed between them.
Tumblr media
In addition to Emilia and Subaru, we've seen happy couples in the form of Subaru's parents as well as Wilhelm and his deceased wife, the previous Sword Saint Theresia. While it isn't likely we'll see a whole lot more of Mama and Papa Natsuki, Wilhelm is still around, and it would be interesting to explore his relationship with Theresia more, especially since he has an extended family including the current Sword Saint Reinhard. From what we've seen of them so far, it seems like they had a reverse dynamic from Subaru and Emilia. While Wilhelm was crude and disrespectful, Theresia's blunt nature eventually broadened Wilhelm's perspective on himself and the world. It would be interesting to explore their past together more as the story progresses if we get the chance.
With Subaru and Emilia's success thus far, other characters in Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- could stand to learn from them if they want to find more fulfilling relationships in the future, romantic or otherwise. Like most things in this story, the lesson is simple to articulate, but difficult to practice: self-respect leads to mutual respect, and we all in turn become stronger by supporting each other through our strengths and flaws. Now that Subaru has been knighted, it will be exciting to see what he and Emilia can accomplish working together.
Which anime couple do you believe in the most? Let us know in the comment below!

FEATURE: What You Need To Know Before Re:ZERO Season 2, Part 2!
Tumblr media
Spoilers ahead for Re:ZERO Season 2
As any fan knows, Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- is a show with a sprawling, complex world. Its characters often have much more going on than they seem, and its mysteries usually come with more questions than answers. The second season aired its first half earlier this year, but so much happened it's totally understandable if you don't remember all the details. That's why we put together this quick refresher so you're ready to hop into Part 2 like the show never went away!
Rem, Crusch, and the Sin Archbishops
The first season culminated in Subaru and his friends defeating Petelgeuse, who possessed the Witch Factor of Sloth, which is now inherited by Subaru. This turned out to have immediate consequences, as his friends Lye and Regulus dropped by in the first episode of Season 2 to check out who killed him. In the process, Lye used his powers to "devour" Rem and Crusch, eliminating Rem from the memories of everyone except Subaru, as well as leaving Crusch without her own memories. This set off the events of the current arc, as Subaru naturally wants to help fix their situations and Beatrice tells him to head off to a place called the Sanctuary for the answers he seeks.
How exactly Subaru is meant to cure whatever is causing Rem's disappearance from everyone's memories is still unknown, but it is likely to do with Echidna and the other Witches or the revelation that Garfiel is the Apostle of Greed.
Tumblr media
    Sanctuary
When Emilia and Subaru arrive at Sanctuary, they are met by the maid Fredrica's brother Garfiel, who takes them to their home of Irlam Village where Ram and Roswaal are also staying. It turns out Sanctuary — which Roswaal calls the "Witch's Graveyard" — is a place Roswaal is responsible for overseeing. It is also surrounded by a barrier that prevents those with mixed blood from leaving once they enter, meaning the residents of the village, as well as Emilia, are stuck there. When they find Roswaal, he is bedridden from injuries apparently received by attempting a trial that, if completed, would take down the barrier.
Later in the season, we find out the truth about Sanctuary — about 400 years ago, when the witch Echidna was alive, she used it as an area to experiment with methods of immortality, using clones of Ryuzu Meyer as her guinea pigs. This also gives us a hint about how Return by Death truly works, as Subaru makes a connection between how the Ryuzu clones' souls transfer to new bodies is similar to his own experience with reviving. Echidna's experiment eventually failed and she died, but Ryuzu and her clones are still around, with both Subaru and Garfiel able to control them as a result of going through the trials.
Tumblr media
    The Trial
Garfiel claims that anyone who doesn't have half-blood and attempts the trial will end up like Roswaal, so driven by a desire to prove herself, Emilia steps up to the task. Unfortunately, she fails a few times over the course of the season, while Subaru manages to get through two of the three sections. Upon repeated loops, it becomes increasingly clear that despite Subaru's success, it may be necessary for Emilia to be the one to clear the trials, not just for her image in the village and Royal Selection but her own self-confidence as well. Throughout the season Garfiel is actively antagonistic toward Subaru for wanting to attempt the trial, which we eventually learn probably stems from his own experience trying to clear it himself.
How Subaru can help Emilia clear the trials, or if she even can, is still unknown.
Tumblr media
  Roswaal's Intentions
Largely an enigma in Season 1, we've learned quite a bit about Roswaal in Season 2, mostly how sadistic he can be when it comes to achieving his goals. It turns out he was fully aware that Emilia would be hunted by the Witch Cult, putting not only her life in danger but already ending the lives of many others, all so she could end the rumors about her connection to the Witch of Envy and increase her chances in the Royal Selection. He is also the cause of the snow that falls upon the Sanctuary before the Great Rabbit appears in each loop. We also see him unceremoniously kill Garfiel and Ram in one loop, ultimately sacrificing himself and revealing he knows about Subaru's Return By Death and will stop at nothing for even one timeline to work out in his favor.
To what end Roswaal is willing to commit such cruelty, we are still not privy.
Tumblr media
    Beatrice's Situation
Another mysterious character, Beatrice has spent most of the show in her hidden library within Roswaal's mansion. Season 2 has given us more to chew on with a few revelations. When she learns of Petelgeuse's death, she grows visibly upset, much to our and Subaru's surprise. This is seemingly tied to her attachment to the book she is always holding, which turns out to be one of two true tomes of power beyond what the Witch Cult uses, the other being in Roswaal's possession. She is driven entirely by her oath to her "mother," and her actions are entirely dictated by what is written in her Tome, which seems to explain her reluctance to assist Subaru in more direct ways. Roswaal gives Subaru a special phrase  "I am that person" — which is somehow related to Beatrice's contract and can compel her to help him.
Eventually, we learn Beatrice's contract is likely to be with Echidna herself, that Beatrice's book hasn't actually had anything to tell her for a long time, and that Beatrice's true desire is to end her 400-year contract by any means necessary. Subaru believes he can assist by simply overwriting her current contract with a new one, but Beatrice is convinced the only options are for the person Echnidna promised would appear to finally show up or for Beatrice herself to simply die.
As of the end of the season's first half, we still don't know if there is a simple way to ease Beatrice's suffering. However, Echidna does tell Subaru she never had a specific person in mind when forming Beatrice's contract, so it seems likely that Roswaal's key phrase "I am that person" would cause Subaru to take up that role. Only time will tell.
Tumblr media
    The Great Rabbit
One of the three strongest Mabeasts, the Great Rabbit is an existential threat to the village and ends Subaru's life twice in the span of this season so far. Taking the form of a seemingly endless mob of tiny rabbits, they cause carnage on a huge scale with their endless appetites. Luckily, Subaru learned from their creator — the Witch of Gluttony Daphne — that they can be defeated by eliminating all of them at once and that a good lure would be a singular massive source of magic, so we can hopefully look forward to Subaru using this information to defeat them.
Tumblr media
    Elsa's Attack on Roswaal's Mansion
A few times, Subaru attempts to head back to Roswaal's mansion to talk to the maids and Beatrice and potentially orchestrate a more concrete plan for the village, only to have everyone involved be brutally murdered by Elsa the Bowel Hunter, a returning villain from the very first arc. Initially a mystery, we eventually do find out that the mansion attack was actually orchestrated by Roswaal himself in another attempt to force Subaru into action, choosing between Emilia and his friends at the mansion. Subaru's plan from here is unknown, but I think we can rest assured he won't fall into Roswaal's plans and will do whatever he can to save both parties.
Tumblr media
Echidna, the Witches of Sin, and Satella
This is where things get a little wild and hard to predict. All of the drama surrounding the barrier, the town, and the trials is relatively grounded, but Subaru also spends a lot of time with Echidna (the Witch of Greed) and her cohorts. While he and the audience are mostly concerned about the attack from the Sin Archbishops that left Rem in such a vulnerable state, Echidna makes it clear there is a much higher level plot going on at the same time to the point that Rem is deemed unnecessary for her ultimate plans for Subaru. The exact details of what that plot is are less clear, and despite meeting the various Witches briefly, it seems unlikely we'll get many definitive answers any time soon, but it is likely to do with her search for immortality and Subaru's Return by Death. Meanwhile, Satella spends some time in the second season attacking the village and berating Subaru for not loving himself enough, but much like the Witches, there are no clear answers on how to deal with her.
Tumblr media
And that, more or less, is a quick rundown of the various plot point and mysteries Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-'s second season has set up for us in just its first half. It's a lot to keep track of, and it isn't obvious how every piece is connected, but with Re:ZERO's level of forethought and world-building we can be sure each piece will be an important part of the larger puzzle.
What were your favorite parts of Season 2's first half, and what mysteries are you looking forward to being resolved in the future? Let us know in the comments below!
