My Dearest, ep 6
This show keeps on going at full steam.
It's interesting, because Jang Hyun saying he hates Joseon is not entirely a lie. I think he has a general disdain for how the society functions and he certainly has no love for the king.
The show really doesn't shy away the the brutality of this invasion. Jang Hyun and the singer are in a dangerous situation with the General testing them in various ways.
It also drives home how women are treated in war and the fear they all have
It's somewhat difficult to watch the court scenes with the king or even the fights because this is a war that ends in utter defeat, from the little knowledge I have of this time period. They are unprepared, out gunned (literally as they are fighting with swords and arrows vs guns and cannons), under manned and the king has been surrounded and cut off from provisions
The Khan also has a similar disdain for the king that Jang Hyun has. He notes how illogical it is for the king's court to be so blindly loyal when he's not fighting the war. Yes, he is ill and weak but he's also not doing anything.
A smallpox outbreak?!? What next?
The Crown Prince may be obnoxious about he people he deems unworthy (ie: the monks) but he is right in what he is telling his father. He knows that this will end badly if the king does not leave the fortress. They really have little options if they want to survive. The Khan is there. They might actually invade Ganghwa island. But the king would rather die (and all his people die) than be "humiliated".
It's not an easy situation but if this is historically accurate, the refusal further doomed them and the country.
Now they are invading Ganghwa island, where Gil Chae was supposed to be safe. Gil Chae springs into action and warns everyone that the invaders are coming. She tells the one man who doesn't believe her that he can just die instead of listening to this girl
The choice for the women: get captured and raped, never to be accepted by your family/society again, be killed or
Tumblr media
The invasion is brutal all around.
Gil Che is smart enough to know who they are chasing and how she can use that to get on the boat. She's brave enough to get him and run like crazy. And she knew exactly how to bargain to get on the boat.
How BRUTAL the scene was where Gil Chae stops the mother from grabbing to Jong Jong. The mother who only asked that her child be saved. Then they watched from the safety of the boat while those left behind were slaughtered.
In a short time, Gil Chae has gone though so many trumas and while I don't think she knows it yet, she's and extraordinarily strong person
Jang Hyun after finding out they invaded Ganghwa Island, the place he told Gil Chae to go for safety, and then almost right after seeing the knife that he gave her on that solider is just pure anger, guilt, angst and grief.
Gil Chae knows that the soldier is sending them to their death. He's sending them alone, with a vague idea of where to go. Hope the little prince doesn't starve to death.
Gil Chae and Jang Hyun are on the same island but now he has measles smallpox. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
But the look he gives her when he sees her is full of longing and love. He takes a step towards her but knows he can't. He saves her from the leader. Then fights everyone else while coughing up blood from measles smallpox.
Gil Chae realizes that it was him that she saw and runs back
I swear, this show does not know how to let us have a breather.

South Korea Tourism
To arrange a good and memorable trip to South Korea, it is advised to read travel guides about this beautiful country, and then contact a local travel professional who may help you organize this tour in the most effective way for reasonable money.
South Korea has a lot of natural places to be observed and historical landmarks to enjoy. The country plays an important role in the protection of the heritage of world culture and natural attractions. Apart from that, it is considered a hospitable place for foreigners and a perspective tourism destination.
In the south-east of the country, one will find Bulguksa monastery and the Seokguram cave temple adjacent to it. Another noteworthy place is Temple Jongmyo, located in Seoul, where memorial tablets of the monarchs of the Joseon Dynasty are stored.
Seorak Mountain is a part of the Diamond Mountains, which is considered one of the most beautiful places in the world. Hallasan mountain is the extinct volcano. Both picturesque places are loved by numerous international visitors. The city of Gyeongju is known for its Tumuli Park, Onyn Five Tombs, Chhomsonde Observatory, the tomb of General Kim Yu Sin, and Mount Namsan with the ruins of pagodas and monasteries. Gyeongju National Museum and the resort on Lake Pomun offer wonderful recreational opportunities.
Ganghwa Island in Korea is known for its historical monuments and beautiful nature. Among the main attractions of the island one should name an altar built by Tangun, the legendary founder of the nation, the fortress walls, the ancient furnace for the production of celadon built in the 13th century, and Chondynsa monastery. The beaches of the eastern coast of Korea are known for weak currents and are considered the best in Korea.
Korea will surely capture your imagination with plenty of Buddhist monasteries and temples, palaces, exquisite statues, which have ancient and rich history. Seoul is perhaps the main place for tourists, with its National Museum, the Institute of Korean classical music named Sejong Cultural Center, Hoam Center for the Arts, Namsan Tower, and Korea House. In the capital of Korea one can visit Gyeongbokgung Palace, known as The Palace of Radiant Happiness, and one of the five palaces in Seoul. The main palace was built by the founder of Joseon dynasty, King Lee Sung-Te, when the state capital was transferred to Seoul. On the palace grounds, there is the National Folk Museum with a rich exposition, which introduces you to the history, culture and traditions of Korea.
No less interesting is Changdeokgung Palace in Seoul, which consists of the king's residence and Secret Garden. Built in 1405, it is the only palace that has preserved the architectural style of the Joseon Dynasty. Secret Garden is a place for entertainment of the ruling dynasty: the nature has harmoniously created its 300-year-old trees, the pond and the pavilion.

Mister Sunshine and Code Geass are well acclaimed shows critiquing both American and Japanese imperialism. The main difference is that Mister Sunshine does it through USA and Empire Japan while Code Geass does it through Britannia. The countries that opposed against the imperialist powers (Korea in Mister Sunshine and Japan in Code Geass) are surrounded by large superpowers but with the difference is that Mister Sunshine takes place prior to Japan's annexation of Korea and then later the division of Korea through US and USSR occupation whereas Code Geass takes place after Britannia's annexation of Japan.
Tumblr media
Both started off with western imperialist powers massacring citizens of the East Asian country bound to be occupied (Battle of Ganghwa Island and Britannia's invasion of Japan). As years pass by, Korea is intervened by the likes of US and Japan in Mister Sunshine whereas Code Geass had Japan already colonized by Britannia with some conflict from the Chinese Federation later on. Koreans in Mister Sunshine and Japanese in Code Geass show hostility towards the imperialist superpowers (USA/Empire of Japan for Koreans and Britannia for Japanese). The conflict around both countries against their oppressors would soon be bound with massive bloodshed and atrocities that would never make them forgive them.
While USA and Japan retain their historical depiction, Britannia like USA is a western superpower hellbent on expanding their domination while at the same time having the tendency to erase other cultures akin to the Empire of Japan. They also utilize pro-collaborators via neocolonialism in order to divide the people of the country so that they have the chance to colonize the country as well as maintaining it's status.
These shows one way or another sow anti-American and anti-Japanese sentiment that serves as the core and driving factor that made them the masterpieces highly recommended if watched either of them.

The Tripiṭaka Koreana (lit. Goryeo Tripiṭaka) or Palman Daejanggyeong ("Eighty-Thousand Tripiṭaka") is a Korean collection of the Tripiṭaka (Buddhist scriptures, and the Sanskrit word for "three baskets"), carved onto 81,258 wooden printing blocks in the 13th century.[1] It is the oldest intact version of Buddhist canon in Hanja script, with no known errors or errata in the 52,330,152 characters which are organized in over 1496 titles and 6568 volumes. Each wood block measures 24 centimeters in height and 70 centimeters in length.[2] The thickness of the blocks ranges from 2.6 to 4 centimeters and each weighs about three to four kilograms. The woodblocks would be almost as tall as Mount Baekdu at 2.74 km if stacked and would measure 60 km long if lined up, and weigh 280 tons in total.[3] The woodblocks are in pristine condition without warping or deformation despite being created more than 750 years ago.[4][5] The Tripiṭaka Koreana is stored in Haeinsa, a Buddhist temple in South Gyeongsang Province, in South Korea. Work on the first Tripiṭaka Koreana began in 1011 during the Goryeo–Khitan War and was completed in 1087. The first Tripiṭaka Koreana contained around 6,000 volumes.
The original set of woodblocks was destroyed by fire during the Mongol invasions of Korea in 1232, when Goryeo's capital was moved to Ganghwa Island during nearly three decades of Mongol incursions, although scattered parts of its prints still remain. To once again implore divine assistance with combating the Mongol threat, King Gojong thereafter ordered the revision and re-creation of the Tripiṭaka; the carving began in 1237 and was completed in 12 years,[2] with support from Choe U and his son Choe Hang,[15] and involving monks from both the Seon and Gyo schools. This second version is usually what is meant by the Tripiṭaka Koreana.[16] In 1398, it was moved to Haeinsa, where it has remained housed in four buildings. Haeinsa, the temple in which the Tripiṭaka Koreana is stored, While most of the wood blocks have remained in pristine condition for more than 750 years a few were damaged when a new depository was built in the early 1970s (by the Park Chung-hee regime) and a few blocks were transplanted to the new building on a trial basis. Those blocks were damaged almost immediately. They were subsequently moved back to their initial spots and the new building was shut down. Each block was made of birch wood from the southern islands of Korea and treated to prevent the decay of the wood. The blocks were soaked in sea water for three years, then cut and then boiled in salt water. Next, the blocks were placed in the shade and exposed to the wind for three years, at which point they were ready to be carved. After each block was carved, it was covered in a poisonous lacquer to keep insects away and then framed with metal to prevent warping.[23] Every block was inscribed with 23 lines of text with 14 characters per line. Therefore, each block, counting both sides, contained a total of 644 characters. The consistency of the style, and some sources, suggests that a single man carved the entire collection but it is now believed that a team of 30 men carved the Tripiṭaka.[2][21]

(fic) Lady of the Lake - Mr. Queen
Lady of the Lake | Mr. Queen
Ship(s): Cheoljong/Jang Bong Hwan, Cheoljong/Kim So Yong
Rating: Teen
Chapters: 5
Word Count: 13241
Status: Completed
The year is 1852, when Yi Won Beom once again becomes His Majesty, the King of Joseon in his own right. In the first year of his direct rule, he finds that despite the happiness and excitement he should be feeling in anticipation of an heir—it is instead uncertainty and grief that seizes his heart.
Teaser:
“What is it?” I had asked, lifting a hand up to swipe my fingertips lightly over my mouth, “Have I somehow gotten ink on my face?” “No,” the woman I had then thought was Kim So Yong had shaken her head, “Just wondering if you believe me yet.” “That where you are from,” I said tentatively, “there are some nations where the people… select their kings, instead of it being determined by divine right? Certainly, there is some merit to the idea—I can see why it would be an attractive solution.” The corners of So Yong’s lips turned up for a split second, and she straightened up her back. “That was like ten classes ago,” she traced a hand down the nape of her neck, “You gotta keep up. I meant—about me being a man.” I watched her face carefully as she darted her eyes around the room, waiting uncharacteristically anxiously for my response. It was undeniably something I had not entirely forgotten about, even though at that moment it had been quite some time since she had last alluded to it.
There were a few fleeting instances when I did find that some of her behaviours gave even the most unruly of my acquaintances on Ganghwa Island a good run for their money, but manner was manner and appearance was appearance. No matter how I had looked at her then, even with her cavalier attitude and her one leg propped up with the knee leant against the edge of my low desk, she seemed like nothing less than a woman.
“Surely you can understand why I find that hard to accept,” I murmured gently, “when one is as, ah, graceful as you are. Even if you are from another time as you say—are men and women from the future really indistinguishable from each other? How bizarre.” She snorted a dismissive laugh, and rolled her eyes. “Right,” her expression turned almost bitter briefly before she smoothed it out again, “I wouldn’t buy my story in your shoes either. And to answer your question: no? Yes? Sometimes—it’s complicated, apparently.” Not knowing what else to say, I kept quiet, refilling our teacups and sliding over the small plate of dasik in a gesture of pacification. “Okay,” So Yong’s eyes traced over the refreshments for a long while before glancing back up, “then let’s just say that I’m the Lady of the Lake. I can live with that.”

Went to Ganghwa War Museum!
Ganghwa Island was the capital of Goryeo, which led the Mongol Uprising for 38 years, and was a place where the Han River, the Imjin River, and the Yeseong River intersect, serving as a defense hub at every historical juncture to prevent foreign invasions. The Ganghwa War Museum was established to display, study, preserve, and collect various war-related artifacts under the theme of the war that took place in Ganghwa to promote the national spirit and history of Ganghwa.

< GANGHWA ISLAND > Ganghwa Island (Hangul 강화도; Hanja 江華島), also known by its native name Ganghwado, is a South Korean island in the estuary of the Han River. It is in the Yellow Sea, off Korea’s west coast.
