I want a Godzilla movie that starts where you'd expect one to end, like Tokyo in ruins as Godzilla makes his way back into the ocean.
Then like he goes home and hangs out with his family at the bottom of the ocean for the rest of the movie.

Kaiju Week in Review (March 17-23, 2024)
Mere days to go before a new Godzilla movie... didn't we just do this?
Tumblr media
Before we welcome that latest entry, let's look back on one that just commemorated its golden anniversary. With Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla turning 50 on March 21, every member of Toho's Big Five has now hit the half-century mark. The company didn't mark the day itself with much; as has become typical, the celebration of Mechagodzilla (and presumably King Caesar) will be spread throughout the year. I wrote a bit about the magnificent machine, who I consider the best Godzilla antagonist, here. The film itself is one of Teruyoshi Nakano's masterpieces, an onslaught of animated rays and gorgeous explosions. The humans are forgettable, but they keep the pace brisk—and the alien commander Mugal is almost as devilish a villain as Mechagodzilla itself, especially in the English dub. Speaking of that dub, you can watch a video breaking down the entire voice cast here, thanks to the tireless work of the Save All Dubs! group.
Tumblr media
Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #6 finally gets to the good stuff, with Lex Luthor piloting Mechagodzilla and commanding an army of Titans to raze Metropolis while the heroes counter with not one but two giant robots. It doesn't quite measure up to the Godzilla: Rulers of Earth finale, but like that double-sized issue, it required two artists (Christian Duce joined by Tom Derenick) to draw all those characters, and the results are impressive. The story hasn't grown any more complex, but I'm at least interested to see how it all wraps up.
In other Godzilla comic news, a Godziban manga by Sakuju Koizumi has started up, hosted by Telemaga, a tokusatsu-focused Kodansha site. The first installment was pretty short, so I'm guessing these'll be updated weekly. It isn't the first comic version of Godziban, as one called Godziman ran during the 1st Season, but this one's actually illustrated.
youtube
Tokyo's Ikebukuro district made Godzilla the honorary chief of police on March 16 to take part in a parade promoting traffic safety. The stunt made international headlines and generated no small amount of angst over Cop Godzilla. I think Gamera would've been better-suited to this campaign myself.
youtube
Here's the trailer for Season 2 of Chibi Godzilla Raids Again, revealing Gabara, Gigan, and Titanosaurus's designs. Looks as funny as the first one. Maaya Uchida, who sang the ending songs in SSSS.Gridman and SSSS.Dynazenon, will voice Chibi Minilla. It's gone weirdly neglected by English Godzilla social media accounts, but X user @MakoMattari translated it.
Tumblr media
The Music Box Theatre in Chicago has a Godzilla program for the ages scheduled for June 7-13, in honor of his 70th birthday. There's not a weak day on the schedule, but the clear highlight is a 24-hour marathon of the entire Showa series on the 8th, which I don't think has ever been attempted before.
G-Fest has also started announcing guests: Ayako Fujitani (Asagi in the Heisei Gamera trilogy) and Rie Ota (Baragon in GMK), both first-timers. Frankly, they could carry the con themselves if they have to; not sure who I'm more excited to meet!

Alright, time for our next poll!
March 15th marks the 57th year anniversary of Gamera vs Gyaos, so I thought I’d shake up the streak of Godzilla or general kaiju fandom polls and give us all a Gamera-centric one, in time for the birthday of his most common enemy. Hoping this gets some traction despite Gamera not being that popular, come on, let’s spread the word of the turtle-
Please remember to reblog so this can get a wider sample size!

HIDEAKI ANNO'S EARLIER LIVE-ACTION WORK
Anno is the current darling of the Tokusatsu world with his amazing Shin Japan Heroes Universe films and especially with the debut yesterday of the American premiere of Shin Kamen Rider. He is, of course, best known as an anime director and the creator of the seminal 90s series Neon Genesis Evangelion.
However, his first two forays into Live Action filmmaking were definitely different. Back in the late 90s, after 'finishing' Evangelion (Ha ha ha ha), Anno directed an anime romance series called Kareshi Kanojou no Jijyo (Kare Kano) which was a departure from his usual science fiction oriented shows. I was part of a fansub group at the time and was buying the laserdiscs for this series and I rather enjoyed it. The theme song is a total banger.
youtube
After finishing that project, Anno moved on to some live action films, his first being an experimental, shot entirely on digital, art film about the phenomenon of compensated dating called Love & Pop.
Tumblr media
Compensated dating is/was the practice of older men paying high school girls to spend time with them and was basically a form of sex work that was questionable at best and downright illegal at worst. Anno was fascinated by a book about the subject called Topaz II by Ryū Murakami and adapted it to the screen with co-writer Akio Satsukawa.
In 2000, Anno made his second major Live Action film Shiki-Jitsu.
Tumblr media
This was a highly personal film starring Ayako Fujitani and was about a disillusioned filmmaker who meets a young woman who continually repeats "tomorrow is my birthday". He tried to communicate with her through the movies he makes on a video camera. Anno met Fujitani (who is the daughter of colossal asshole actor Steven Seagal) while hanging out with Shinji Higuchi on the set of the the 90s Gamera films and thought she would be perfect for this role. After this, Anno directed the 2004 adaptation of Cutie Honey and the rest is history.
Tumblr media
I thought it would be fun to take a peek at his lesser known films while he is in the eye of the tokusatsu public. Hope you learned something. These films are not super easy to find, unfortunately.

With that post/poll I just reblogged, here's some birthday funfacts with the Shakespearesona kids.
Kanari's birthday is June 28th, which was also the birthday of Polly Moran, an actress and comedian from the Golden Age of Hollywood. As a comedian, she was effective at slapstick and was known to be brash and loud-mouthed. I thought it'd be a good fit for our punchy Zio Girl.
Takumi's birthday is April 7th, the same birthday as Francis Ford Coppola. Chosen due to the Coppola family having multiple members in the film industry. Not quite the generations long legacy of the Matsushidas but close enough, right?
Kazuhiko's birthday is February 20th, sharing it with Richard Beymer who played Tony in the first movie adaptation of West Side Story (which is a Romeo & Juliet retelling.)
Chika's birthday is July 20th, sharing it with Natalie Wood who played Maria in the aforementioned West Side Story movie adaptation.
Aijiro's birthday is November 27th, the premiere date of the first Gamera movie. I thought it fit given Gamea's popularity with kids and Aijiro being the youngest member of the party who still has a fondness for heroes and monsters.
Lowe being a creature of the Backstage doesn't really have a birthday or at least one he remembers. Everyone decides to make April 26th, the date William Shakespeare was baptized.
Hitomi's birthday is March 3rd, same birthday as Jackie Joyner-Kercee, a retired track and field star who is considered one of the greatest female athletes of All Time. While Hitomi's a swimmer not a track and field runner, I thought it still fit.
And finally Rie's birthday is May 16th, sharing her birthday with Lynn Collins, the actress who portrayed Portia in the first sound film adaption of Merchant of Venice.
Our wildcard, Sora's birthday will be whenever me and Sakuradreamerz finally post the first chapter. And there's one more birthday but the character is kind of a spoiler so wait and see. ;)

Kaiju Week in Review (September 3-9, 2023)
Tumblr media
I was a bit nervous about GAMERA -Rebirth-; the animation looked dodgy and Netflix has a shaky track record with kaiju shows. I'm pleased to report this is the best entry in the genre that they've put their name on. Good characters, great action (brutal as always), and actual episodic storytelling that effortlessly weaves in elements from the Showa films beyond all the returning kaiju. Watch it immediately.
Tumblr media
Tie-ins abound for GAMERA -Rebirth-: a two-part novelization, a manga adaptation, and a prequel manga that sheds some light on [UNBELIEVABLY MASSIVE SPOILERS]. That prequel manga (GAMERA -Rebirth- code thyrsos) is being published online for free in both Japanese and English. You can read the first chapter here.
Tumblr media
In unofficial translation news, English subtitles for GAMERA.1999 (1999) and yokaipedia (2022) are now available. The former is Hideaki Anno's making-of documentary for Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris; the latter is a fun, child-friendly fantasy from Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki with a big ol' centipede-dragon at the end. (It's also maybe the first Japanese kaiju film I've ever seen with a major Black character.) I haven't gotten to GAMERA.1999 yet, though from scrubbing through it, it seems like a lot of dialogue was just ignored by the translator. Shame, as that's one I've wanted for a long time.
youtube
We have a teaser for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, as well as a premiere date for the first two (out of ten) episodes: November 17. (I am being showered with Media for my 30th birthday.) The big news from this trailer is that John Goodman is reprising his role as Bill Randa from Kong: Skull Island. I assume that's going to be through flashbacks and old recordings only, since he was eaten by a Skullcrawler in that one. We also catch glimpses of two new creatures, a dragon and a crab from what I can tell. The latter looks to be fighting a Mother Longlegs.
Tumblr media
Fandango and AMC have added mostly-empty listings for Godzilla 2000 on November 1. Fathom Events screened Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla on November 3 last year; despite randomly showing Tokyo SOS back in March, I gather they're making a tradition out of Godzilla Day. Note that the listed runtime is longer than the film itself. Predictions for the program: another message from Keiji Ota, the 2022 Godzilla vs. Gigan short, and the Japanese version of G2K. Interesting that they're running the last Toho Godzilla film to receive a wide release in the U.S. exactly a month before Godzilla Minus One has a wide release of its own here.
Tumblr media
Gamera isn't a meta-defining Godzilla Battle Line unit... but he's Gamera in a Godzilla game, so I've been using him in every match since I unlocked him. He's gearing towards demolishing flying units, with fireballs that deal more damage against them and knock them back. A pity that he's arriving well after those units were at their most dominant.
Tumblr media
Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons #3 still isn't giving me much to write home about, but the kaiju cult creeping to the forefront intrigues. Also cool to see Ebirah in a starring role.
youtube
Marubeni, one of Japan's biggest general trading companies, put out a bizarre commercial featuring samurai, zombies, a meteor, and a refurbished GMK King Ghidorah. The ad now has English subtitles, and you can watch a Ghidorah-centric behind-the-scenes video here.
Tumblr media
I cannot believe I have more Cleopatra Entertainment fuckery to report on with regards to their Shin Ultraman releases, but they're truly trying to take the "Worst Film Company of 2023" title from the members of the AMPTP. Their third attempt at a barebones disc is starting to reach customers... but the ones who already received the initial replacement disc are being told no more will be sent. @starestream is trying to figure out if they'll be selling the third edition on their site, since it seems buying it anywhere else is a gamble. (Physically, the third edition looks almost the same as the first two, set apart only by the "SUBTITLED" text on the disc.) Either way, it's another blow to a movie that truly doesn't deserve this.
