(Ford Galaxie 500).
The Ford Galaxie is a full-sized car that was built in the United States by Ford for model years 1959 through to 1974. The name was used for the top models in Ford's full-size range from 1958 until 1961, in a marketing attempt to appeal to the excitement surrounding the Space Race. For 1962, all full-size Fords wore the Galaxie badge, with "500" and "500/XL" denoting the higher series.
The Galaxie 500/LTD was introduced for 1965 followed by the Galaxie 500 7-Litre for 1966. The Galaxie 500 prefix was dropped from the LTD in 1966, and from the XL in 1967; however the basic series structuring levels were maintained. The "regular" Galaxie 500 continued below the LTD as Ford's mid-level full-size model from 1965 until its demise at the end of the 1974 model year.
The Galaxie was the competitor to the high-volume full sized Chevrolet Impala. and the Plymouth Belvedere.
Model year 1964 was the fourth and final year of this body style. Interior trim was altered, and the exterior featured a more sculpted look which was actually designed to make the car more aerodynamic for NASCAR. The formal-roof "boxtop" style was no longer available, all non-wagon models now featuring the "fastback" roof design that was the runaway best-seller in 1963. The base 300 was replaced by a line of Custom and Custom 500 models. The 289 continued as the base V8 and was standard in the XL series. XL models got new thin-shell bucket seats with chrome trim. Federal regulations now required lap-style safety belts for both front outboard occupants. The ignition switch was moved from the left side of the steering column, to the right, but otherwise the attractive instrument panel remained unchanged from '63. The 1964 XL two-door hardtop became the best seller of any XL produced in any year.
The 427 cu in (7.0 l) engine was used in 50 lightweight fiberglass-equipped cars for drag racing. These competed in North America but were still too heavy and Ford introduced the lightweight Fairlane Thunderbolt.
The Ford Country Squire station wagon, while wearing "Country Squire" badging, was actually part of the Galaxie 500 line. Some Country Squires had "Galaxie 500" badging on the glovebox indicating the series name. These station wagons featured the same trims as Galaxie 500s, and were a step up from the base-model Country Sedan.
Over the course of about 20 years, the LTD name filtered through dozens of family Fords. It started as an unexpected Luxury version of the regular Ford, but beginning in 1968 it began to gradually take over the whole big Ford universe. The LTD, being a family car, is less well remembered than the Mustang or Bronco today, but the idea kick-started the “Brougham” concept, a regular car that was gilded like a luxury machine and priced within reach of mass-market buyers. The first LTD debuted in 1965, and by the time this ‘68 was built, had inspired imitators from GM, Chrysler, and even AMC. The original #FordLTD of 1965 had come as a surprise to both buyers and critics. A new top trim on the Galaxie, it was not substantively different from the other big Fords in any mechanical respect. Nor was it the most expensive big Ford, that honor fell to the mighty Galaxie 7-Litre. But it was about $400-500 more than the regular Galaxie, enough to buy a good used car in those days. Tor that money buyers got lots of differences they could see and feel - namely special cloth, deep carpets, vinyl tops, special badges, and lots of gear. There had always been loaded big Fords, but the LTD, sprung from the market-reading mind of Lee Iacocca, was specifically sold on “luxury,” with Lincoln-like extras. Costing little more to build than the humble Ford Custom it was a low-overhead, high-profit recipe, like GMC’s Yukon Denali today. More than 100K were sold in ‘65, and it became its own nameplate in 1967. By then it had inspired Chevy’s Caprice, Plymouth’s VIP, and AMC’s Ambassador DPL. The LTD would evolve quickly in the late 1960s as Ford moved to expand the concept. In 1968, the car was heavily restyled even though a complete redesign would be introduced for 1969, and the LTD started to branch out, with some formerly standard bits being reworked into the “LTD Brougham” package. The ‘68 look previewed some of the changes for 1969, but as a result of that new design, the 1968 models are rather unique, with some of the older elements and some of the newer ones, like hidden headlamps. Future LTDs would splinter into many more variations, and by 1976 all big Fords were LTDs. (at Juanita Beach Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLhqq3vli_S/?igshid=11w13ci3jfczz

A unique roof for GM’s bestseller
Chevrolet introduced the new Caprice Custom Sedan in February 1965 at the Chicago Auto Show. The GM brand took a page from its own playbook much like it had in 1958, when it introduced the Impala, an upmarket trim level for the existing top-of-the-line Bel Air. The Caprice, a jazzed-up Impala, was Chevrolet’s answer to the new Ford Galaxie 500 LTD, introduced at…
Ford Galaxie 500 LTD 4-door Hardtop, 1965. The third generation Galaxie was an all-new design featuring vertically stacked dual headlights. In addition to the 4-door hardtop there was a 2-door hardtop & convertible as well as 2 & 4-door pillared saloons and a 5-door station wagon.
