Grand Puba: “I Like It (I Wanna’ Be Where You Are)” (1995)
The last radio single I heard from Grand Puba which Hot 97 pushed heavily that summer. Some major sampling wins starting with Cal Tjader’s vibes from “Never My Love” (’68) and tons of vocal hat-tips taken from DeBarge, Michael and Jermaine Jackson, The Stylistics, Crash Crew, Rose Royce, Rudy Ray Moore, and Force M.D.’s. Sample enthusiasts can have a field day searching if one has nothing better to do today.

⭐️ OCs as other characters ⭐️
Thank you for the tag @ghostoffuturespast it was very interesting to do the quiz and think about how it sometimes fits so well.
Rules: take this quiz and share 5 (or more! or less! the world is your oyster!) results from the top 50 that you feel really fit your oc(s). if you don’t recognize very many from the top 50, feel free to expand into the top 100
A confession about myself first:
I don't watch TV frequently, I don't go to the movies, I have Netflix and Prime Video, but it is my better half that watches. So, this means that those peeps are probably either from movies/shows that are already old or from a movie someone (mildly) forced me to watch. 😅
Edit: As it turned out, Lucifer and Mr. Robot were two shows I really enjoyed watching, that aren't that old.
1. Valaire
Tumblr media
Simon Tam (Firefly + Serenity): 86% (I don't know who that is but I added him because it was the best match.
Obi-Wan Kenobi (Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith): 84%
Dr. John Watson (Sherlock): 83%
Dr. Eric Foreman (House, M.D.): 82%
Morpheus (The Matrix): 81%
2. Joris

Jack Hodgins (Bones): 86%
Elliot Alderson (Mr. Robot): 79%
L (Death Note): 79%
John Connor (Terminator 2: Judgement Day): 78%
Neo (The Matrix): 76%
3. Vicco
Tumblr media
Spike Spiegel (Cowboy Bebop): 89%
Faye Valentine (Cowboy Bebop): 88%
Mazikeen (Lucifer): 87%
Johnny Castle (Dirty Dancing): 86%
Lucifer Morningstar (Lucifer): 85%
4. Myself
Because of the fun (you don't have to do it yourself)
Fox Mulder (The X-Files): 80% (it was the best match, although only 80%)
David Levinson (Independence Day): 80%
Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood): 75%
Will Hunting (Good Will Hunting): 74%
Neo (The Matrix): 72%
What did I find out about my ocs? Not much new things actually.
Valaire was supposed to be a guide or leader type of person, smart and always knowing what to do. And just maybe he got some treats from Johnny that he adopted.
Joris is the smart tech guy that will find solutions for every problem, even if he has to go some unconventional ways.
Vicco is my chaos child as I call him sometimes, he is charming and someone you would like being around. But only as long as you don't make him mad, because then he can turn into a demon.
As for myself I laughed hard at the first 2 entries because it gave me the "I told you so" vibe. Which happens often when I give advise to others. Unfortunately I am not a good advisor for myself.
I'm tagging with no pressure as always:
@genocidalfetus | @neonbutchery | @wanderingaldecaldo | @cinnamon-mey | @jaymber | @gloryride | @honourandsteel | @vox-monstera
If I didn't tag you and you want to do this, please feel tagged.
Always feel free to tag me on such things, I love to do tagging games.

Title: The Night Ocean
Author: Paul La Farge
Genre/s: historical, mystery, literary fiction
Content/Trigger Warning/s: racism, classism, antisemitism, homophobia, drug use, cheating
Summary (from publisher's website): Marina Willett, M.D., has a problem. Her husband, Charlie, has become obsessed with H.P. Lovecraft, in particular with one episode in the legendary horror writer’s life: In the summer of 1934, the “old gent” lived for two months with a gay teenage fan named Robert Barlow, at Barlow’s family home in central Florida. What were the two of them up to? Were they friends–or something more? Just when Charlie thinks he’s solved the puzzle, a new scandal erupts, and he disappears. The police say it’s suicide. Marina is a psychiatrist, and she doesn’t believe them. A tour-de-force of storytelling, The Night Ocean follows the lives of some extraordinary people: Lovecraft, the most influential American horror writer of the 20th century, whose stories continue to win new acolytes, even as his racist views provoke new critics; Barlow, a seminal scholar of Mexican culture who killed himself after being blackmailed for his homosexuality (and who collaborated with Lovecraft on the beautiful story “The Night Ocean”); his student, future Beat writer William S. Burroughs; and L.C. Spinks, a kindly Canadian appliance salesman and science-fiction fan — the only person who knows the origins of The Erotonomicon, purported to be the intimate diary of Lovecraft himself. As a heartbroken Marina follows her missing husband’s trail in an attempt to learn the truth, the novel moves across the decades and along the length of the continent, from a remote Ontario town, through New York and Florida to Mexico City. The Night Ocean is about love and deception — about the way that stories earn our trust, and betray it.
Buy Here: https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-night-ocean-paul-la-farge/8614852
Spoiler-Free Review: This wasn’t entirely what I was expecting, but it was a pleasant surprise, especially since I blasted right through it. I honestly wasn’t expecting to be so compelled by the prose given the way the book appears to be formatted, but hey: it was very readable despite occasional moments of confusion regarding who was talking at any given point in time.
Just to get this out of the way: no, one doesn’t need to be deeply familiar with Lovecraft’s life, or even Robert Barlow’s, to understand and enjoy this book. As long as one knows that Lovecraft was a deeply racist, classist, misogynistic, and antisemitic person, and that these tendencies appear across all his writing, then one should be fine. And even if one DOESN’T know (though I find that hard to imagine, given that it is 2023 and the most recent brouhaha over Lovecraft’s politics happened way back in the late 2010s - which is around the time this book came out, incidentally), one will find out soon enough in this book. It’s probably one of the main “true” things that this book presents. Because what this book is about (among many other things), is truth and lies, and how the latter can sometimes be hard to differentiate from the former if it’s compelling enough.
In line with that, this novel also tries to tackle what happens when we figure out the truth - and the truth turns out to be undesirable or painful (or both). Lovecraft played around with the idea that there are some truths out there that are so destructive, they can literally drive a person mad; this is the most common fate met by the protagonists of his stories. This book does something similar, but the destruction is more on the level of the self, and one’s relationship with other people and the rest of the world. This was, in my opinion, the most interesting part of the novel, and where most of conflict springs from. Does one WANT to believe the story being told? What if it’s not true? How IMPORTANT is it to one that the story being told is true? What lengths will one go to, to determine if it is? And what happens when what one feels doesn’t align with external evidence? Is truth something one FEELS, or is it something one PROVES? Unfortunately, the difference between the two is not always clear - both in this novel and in the real world.
This book also plays around a lot with intertextuality: the way texts reference other texts in various ways both obvious and subtle. This book contains both, with references not just to Lovecraft’s work (though obviously the story references his work the most), but to the immense network of twentieth-century SFF fandom. If one is the kind of reader who’s deeply familiar with the names and faces of that period of SFF, then one will be able to tease out a LOT more references than I managed to, since I’m just not as familiar with all the people mentioned and referenced in this novel. Fortunately there are footnotes provided, so any vague references were at least explained, but I’m sure googling names will prove just as helpful.
Another idea this novel plays with is the idea of people AS stories: that is to say, what makes us who we are, as individuals and perhaps as cultures, is the stories we tell about ourselves, and maybe the stories we tell TO ourselves, too. Is it possible to entirely change who one is just by changing the story around oneself? An interesting question, not least in the age of the internet where it’s easy to change how one is perceived - and therefore, who one IS - just by telling a different story in a sufficiently compelling way.
Overall, this was a really compelling read in ways that I hadn’t expected, but was pleasantly surprised by. It asks a lot of interesting questions about truth and our relationship with the truth, framed around two bittersweet romances, one of which might, or might not, have happened.
Rating: five strange journals

"The Tree of Death?"
The comedic Dick Briefer FRANKENSTEIN series ended at the beginning of 1949, but three years later, Feature Publications revived the title (continuing the original numbering), again written and drawn by Briefer, but taking a more overtly horrific tack. Unlike the earlier PRIZE COMICS stories, this version of the monster couldn't talk and was much more limited mentally and psychologically. Like the monster in the Universal films or some later versions of the Incredible Hulk, he was a simple-minded brute who could respond gently if treated kindly, but responded to fear or aggression with murderous violence. (He kills a LOT of people in the 1952–1954 series.)
These stories have almost no humor, and while they're not necessarily as gruesome as the contemporary EC Comics horror line, they are routinely very brutal. They're also rather wordy; even where characters' dialogue isn't especially verbose, the captions tend to run on, presumably compensating for the mute main character. For all their violence, they're often quite sad, as in this story from FRANKENSTEIN #31 (June/July 1954):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's quite an image, even discounting the fact that the monster has brutally killed eight people in nine pages.
Horror and crime comics of this sort were very popular in the early '50s, which resulted in public outcry and claims by luminaries like psychiatrist Frederic Wertham that unsavory comics caused juvenile delinquency. The major publishers responded by creating a self-censorship board, the Comics Code Authority, with a code of standards modeled on the movie industry's Production Code. This also provided a convenient way of forcing rivals like EC Comics out of business; the Comics Code explicitly forbade the use of the words "horror" or "terror" in the titles of comics! The code also prohibited "[s]cenes dealing with, or instruments associated with walking dead, torture, vampires and vampirism, ghouls, cannibalism and werewolfism." (Some of these restrictions were relaxed in the '70s.)
Since comic books were mostly a hand-to-mouth business, smaller houses like Feature quickly gave up; FRANKENSTEIN was canceled with #33 (October/November 1954), and Dick Briefer subsequently left comics for commercial art. EC Comics made a doomed effort to replace its popular horror and crime titles with new concepts like M.D. and PSYCHOANALYSIS before dropping all their comic books except MAD, which in 1955 was converted to a magazine not subject to the Comics Code.
BTW, the best resource on the Comics Code and the circumstances surrounding its creation is Amy Kiste Nyberg's 1998 book SEAL OF APPROVAL: THE HISTORY OF THE COMICS CODE, published by University Press of Mississippi, which also includes the full text of the various versions of the Code.

Layzie Bone. Krayzie Bone. Bizzy Bone. Wish Bone. Flesh-N-Bone. Five friends from Cleveland, OH, bum-rushed the rap game in the mid-1990s with a distinctive singsongy flow, street tales and their own unique personas. Flesh-N-Bone's legal troubles would estrange him from the group at times, but there was no denying the talents of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. After independently releasing their debut as teenagers, the Midwestern group signed to gangsta rap godfather Eazy E's Ruthless Records in 1993. Their debut EP Creepin' On Ah Come-up made Bone Thugs-N-Harmony one of the hottest new groups in Hip-Hop.
After Eazy's death in 1995 and the release of the critically-acclaimed E. 1999 Eternal, Bone Thugs became major stars in music. One of the most popular acts of the 1990s, the Grammy-winners would go on to major success and over the next two decades, established a following as devout as any in the game. With their rapid-fire flows and DJ U-Neek's darkly melodic production, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony set a new standard for Midwest rap stardom and reinvented the art of rhyming. You can still hear their influence today.
We ranked the 25 Dopest Bone Thugs-N-Harmony songs.
#26
"NOTORIOUS THUGS" - THE NOTORIOUS B.I.G. FEAT. BONE THUGS N HARMONY [BONUS SONG]
Our BONUS SONG pick is a celebrated classic guest spot! "Bone-and-Biggie-Biggie" is a musical marriage that may have seemed odd at the time, but it yielded one of the 90s dopest rap collabs.
#25
"B.N.K." W/EAZY-E
R.I.P. Eric Wright. The revisited/remade version of one of Eazy-E's darkest tunes, this posthumous collab would eventually turn up on the first Bone Thugs compilation in 1998.
#24
"HOME"
Chris Rock (who seemed to like mocking BTNH, more on that later) poked fun at this collab, but it actually works a lot better than one might expect. Bone revisits one of Phil Collins' biggest 80s hits.
#23
"CREPT AND WE CAME"
An unofficial sequel to their 1994 track "Creepin' On A Come-Up," it's morbid and, in a strange way, kinda beautiful. DJ U-Neek is fully in his bag, as Bizzy, Wish, Layzie and Krayzie lean into the groove. .

#22
"IF I COULD TEACH THE WHOLE WORLD"
Following the massive success of "Tha Crossroads" (more on that later), Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's singsongy style became more polished and tuneful. And the best example is this melodic single from 1997s "The Art Of War."
#21
"DAYS OF OUR LIVES"
DJ U-Neek flipped two eighties classics for this one. Originally released on the soundtrack of the classic 1996 heist film "Set It Off," this Force M.D.'s-sampling (along with Herb Alpert) track became one of the group's biggest hits.
#20
"I TRIED" FEAT. AKON
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's biggest hit of the 2000s, this heartfelt ballad was also one of the group's biggest hits as a short-lived trio following the departure of Bizzy Bone.
#19
"BUDDAH LOVAZ"
The Isley Brothers' "Choosey Lover" is the obvious jumping off point for one of Bone's best weed anthems. It's one of the best songs on "E. 1999 Eternal."
#18
"DOWN FOE MY THANG"
An early Bone Thugs gem that serves as one of the grittiest tracks on their classic 1994 EP "Creepin' On Ah Come-Up." That squealing opening synth doesn't set you up for the gut-checking groove that drops in.
#17
"E. 1999"
A stellar showcase for estranged group member Flesh-N-Bone, this is an all-timer. The title track from an undisputed classic, this banger is also one of the group's most polished and distinctive songs.
#16
"NO SURRENDER"
An early example of just how unique (get it?) the production has always been on Bone Thugs projects. It's both aggressive and druggy, it's midtempo but feels hyperkinetic. Eazy and the group have the official co-credit, but this has U-Neek's trademarks all over it.
#15
"MEET ME IN THE SKY"
One of the crew's most heartfelt latter-day tunes, it's the quintet tapping into some of their "Crossroads"-esque energy and delivering a gorgeously melodic ode to forever.
#14
"NO SHORTS, NO LOSSES"
The gurgling slow-as-molasses guitar line and that synth-driven hook let you know what time it is. It's druggy, it's infectious, it's dark--and it might be the most slept on track in their catalog.
#13
"AIN'T NOTHING CHANGED"
One of the more underappreciated tracks in their lengthy catalog, this standout from 1997s double album "The Art Of War" wasn't a single, but maybe it should've been.
#12
"CROSSROADS" (ORIGINAL VERSION)
The version that appeared on early pressings of "E. 1999 Eternal" sounds nothing like it's much more famous counterpart, but the mournful spirit is the connective tissue between the tracks.
#11
"BUDSMOKERS ONLY"
Armed with an interpolation of the distinctive rhythm from Earth, Wind & Fire's "Reasons," Bone Thugs showed that they could turn a rapturous soul classic into a 90s rap weed anthem.
#10
"LOOK INTO MY EYES"
A haunting track that originally appeared on the soundtrack to 1997s disastrous "Batman & Robin," it's one of Bone's biggest mainstream hits and a good example of how their sound and songcraft quickly evolved.
#9
"MO' MURDA"
The slowed down vocal and looping piano line are DJ U-Neek trademarks, and this standout from 1995s landmark "E. 1999: Eternal" is a quintessential BTNH song.
#8
"EVERYDAY THANG"
An underrated gem from 1995s platinum-selling "The Show" soundtrack, it's a good indicator of how strongly Bone had already established their sound even after only one major label release.
#7
"CREEPIN' ON AH COME UP"
One of the tracks that epitomizes DJ U-Neek's woozy production, this slow-roller is one of the group's most low-key psychedelic efforts. All squealing synths and syrupy basslines, it's like the Dirty South and the West Coast converging in Cleveland.
#6
"MR. BILL COLLECTOR"
With a snippet from Eddie Murphy's classic "Coming To America," Bone Thugs flips the script and instead of rapping about paying bills, they make it clear that they're the ones coming to collect. "Yo' rent's due, muthafucka!"
#5
"THUG LOVE" FEAT. 2PAC
In the wake of Tupac Shakur's 1996 murder, Hip-Hop was reeling. Bone Thugs had this brilliant track already in waiting, and when the world heard the fallen Pac alongside the Cleveland spitters over that now-legendary, gunshot-led beat; it was like the legendary Shakur had never left us.
#4
"FOE DA LOVE OF $"
Eazy-E's most prominent feature on a Bone Thugs album and one of the singles that came to define the group. The Ruthless Records founder gave an assist to his newest proteges in 1994, delivering a street anthem for the ages.
#3
"THA CROSSROADS"
A monster hit. A decade-defining classic. When Bone Thugs remixed their somber album cut "Tha Crossroads," they delivered one of the rap game's most iconic elegies. The fact that the Grammy-winning smash also doubled as a tribute to their fallen mentor Eazy only made it more poignant.
#2
"1ST OF THE MONTH"
Chris Rock joked that this classic 1995 hit was "niggas sangin' welfare carols," but it helped cement Bone as the most unique hitmakers of the 1990s. Following their acclaimed EP "Creepin' On Ah Come Up," this was the song that let everyone know they were just getting started.
#1
"THUGGISH RUGGISH BONE"
It wasn't their first single, but it was the single that announced them to the world. With an instantly-memorable hook from Shatasha Williams and those uniquely rapid-fire flows, five Midwestern rhymers shot out of the gate with a song that was unapologetically (shout-out to Rev. Calvin Butts) thuggish.

➝ Frequency Life Force 🌱
Each substance that you consume or that is emitted from your body (stress, anger, fear), vibrates at a particular frequency and distorts the energy you hold on a cellular level. Alkaline food, fresh fruit, and herbs vibrates at 27 Hz, while dead food/canned/processed food vibrates at ZERO HZ.
Each day, be in the question of:
Is what I’m doing coming from a high vibration state of knowing or is it emitting stress, worry, fear?
Is what I’m thinking of within highest service for the frequency I’m holding or is it depleting me?
Is what I’m consuming adding to the frequency of this divine body or is it robbing from my frequency and cells?
➝ You’re creating yourself anew with each moment, each breath, each action.
A healthy body frequency is 62-72 Hz . When the frequency drops, the immune system is compromised.
Colds and Flu start at: 57-60 MHz Disease starts at: 58 MHz Candida overgrowth starts at: 55 MHz Receptive to Epstein Barr at: 52 MHz Receptive to Cancer at: 42 MHz Death begins at: 25 MHz
➝ Human Body: Genius Brain Frequency 80-82 MHz Brain Frequency Range 72-90 MHz Normal Brain Frequency 72 MHz Human Body 62-78 MHz Human Body: from Neck up 72-78 MHz Human Body: from Neck down 60-68 MHz Thyroid and Parathyroid glands are 62-68 MHz Thymus Gland is 65-68 MHz Heart is 67-70 MHz Lungs are 58-65 MHz Liver is 55-60 MHz Pancreas is 60-80 MHz
➝ Foods: (fresh foods and herbs can be higher if grown organically and eaten freshly picked): Fresh Foods 20-27 Hz Fresh Herbs 20-27 Hz Dried Foods 15-22 Hz Dried Herbs 15-22 Hz Processed/Dead/Canned Food 0 HZ
“In every culture and in every medical tradition before ours, healing was accomplished by moving energy." - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, Nobel Laureate in Medicine (1937) What Rife proved is that every health disorder has a frequency, which in turn responds (resonates) to a specific (optimal) frequency for its dissolving/healing in the body.
“You are a digital, bioholographic, precipitation, crystallization, miraculous manifestation, of Divine frequency vibrations, forming harmonically in hydro-space.” -Dr. Leonard Horowitz
According to Dr. Royal R. Rife, every disease has a frequency. He found that certain frequencies can prevent the development of disease and that others would destroy disease. Substances with higher frequency will destroy diseases of a lower frequency. The study of frequencies raises an important question, concerning the frequencies of substances we eat, breathe and absorb.
American inventor Nikola Tesla (1856 – 1943), a pioneer of electrical technology, said that if you could eliminate certain outside frequencies that interfered in our bodies, we would have greater resistance toward disease.
Another doctor and scientist, whose research has been buried for some time but has managed to resurface due to the work of avid supporters, is Dr Royal Raymond Rife M.D, who developed a frequency generator in the late 1920’s. In brief, Rife successfully treated 1,000 patients diagnosed with incurable cancer in the 1930’s. He was honoured with 14 awards and an honorary doctorate.
After the unsuccessful attempt by pharmaceutical companies to buy out his research and equipment, his office was ransacked, his research paperwork was stolen and the machine that healed all those 1,000 “incurable” cancer patients was destroyed. In 1934, before this destruction occurred, the University of Southern California appointed a Special Medical Research Committee to bring terminal cancer patients from Pasadena County Hospital to Rife's San Diego Laboratory and clinic for treatment. The team included doctors and pathologists assigned to examine the patients - if still alive - in 90 days. After the 90 days of treatment, the Committee concluded that 86.5% of the patients had been completely cured. The treatment was then adjusted and the remaining 13.5% of the patients also responded within the next four weeks. The total recovery rate using Rife's technology was 100%.

Day 13: Oceanic.
(pretend this isn’t late)
I originally did a drawing for this day’s prompt, but I was unsatisfied so scrambled to get this done. It’s definitely messy, but I really enjoyed working on it, so I don’t mind.

It’s just fluff :).
Oceanic
House walks out into the kitchen yawning and stretching as Wilson looks up. “I thought you’d at least be asleep for another hour” he says and goes back to whatever he was doing, which was  upon further investigation making breakfast.
House grumbles something indistinctly and sits down by the round dining table adjacent to the kitchen. Wilson had picked the place to stay, and it included a view to the ocean from the joint kitchen dining area.
House has always had a complex relationship with water, but even he could admit that the way the sun's rays caress the ocean horizon in the early august morning was quite nice.
“Did you sleep well?” Wilson asks glancing up from the pan and House nods, “I did, except for the fact I woke up in the middle of the night freezing because someone thought it was a good idea to only have one duvet”.
Wilson rolls his eyes and flips the pancake he was frying, “You could just have gotten out of bed to get one before we went to sleep” he notes.
House shakes his head making a clicking noise with his tongue disapprovingly he responds, “I have a bum leg”.
Wilson laughs lightly and says “Then you could have woken me up”.
House pouts sarcastically, standing up he counters, “Maybe I didn’t want you to be all grouchy in the morning, you get that way when you don’t get your beauty sleep”.
Wilson swats Houses hand away from the plate of pancakes, “Admit defeat, you didn’t want to wake me up because you liked the forced proximity by lack of extra bedding”.
House rolls his eyes, “I don’t need an excuse to cuddle”.
Wilson narrows his eyes, “Then why does a convenient one always come up then?”.
House shrugs and Wilson wafts his hand away from the pancakes again. “The mysteries of the universe” House snarks as Wilson pours the last of the pancake batter on the pan.
“Could you maybe set the table instead of standing there like a dog begging for food?” Wilson asks and House scoffs.
“Fine” after House lingers on the word for a suitable amount of time, the kitchen falls silent except for the ambient sounds of ocean waves crashing and cars motors buzzing peacefully outside.
House slides the fancy blue ocean themed placemats that Wilson had cooed over their first night here and stacks plates and cutlery and neatly places them on the table.
Wilson places the pancakes on the table along with maple sirup and chocolate spread, House smiles quietly to himself at the sight of the somewhat mangled blueberry smiley faces in the pancakes.
“I’m glad you appreciate my effort” Wilson says warmly and sits down at the table, House serves Wilson and then himself responding, “Of course I do, I’ve always done so”
Raising a brow Wilsons grabs the chocolate spread and says, “Well you haven’t always made it known”
“Hmmm, I think I have” House retorts, mouth half full.
Wilson chuckles softly and looks out the window at the dark blue light almost turquoise by the sun, “It’s a shame we only have 2 days left”.
Following Wilsons eye line and joining in watching the ocean, House nods, “We can always come back, or vacation somewhere else”
Wilson smiles and looks over to House. “Thank you” he says and House furrows his brows in mild confusion.
Wilson though doesn’t say anything further just goes back to staring at the calm water foaming white as the small waves break against the beach every now and again. There’s such enjoyment in savoring the quiet simple moments of sunrise orange and oceanic blue.

**I've been a Force M.D.s OG fan for years, and this song struck my imagination to create this trailer**
The trailer could be better, as I see some hiccups after exporting. It's rather complicated to get the right shot when dealing with the Sims and their glitches, but I still enjoyed making it and learned a lot. I'm looking forward to creating more and, of course, improving as time goes on. Thanks again for watching!
