I love how the broken, gilded cage Robin sits in appears to resemble a waterphone (and a phonograph within, by the look of it?). You may have heard its beautiful haunting voice in horror films and music in general. That the splash art attributes it to her, a Path of Harmony character, The Robin of Penacony, renowned singer across the stars, is so cool.

Tales of the Abyss -Rewatch- 23
Tumblr media
Ah... we’re so close to the end. I’d be sad when this is over but happy that I finally got to rewatch this wonderful series.
I got too lazy to make this post earlier though haha. Next episode comes out later tonight XD.
Tumblr media
The group has returned to Baticul to talk to the king who once again apologizes to Luke for what had happened and Luke assures him that trying to sacrifice himself was his own choice. Duke Fabre was also present to say that he's proud of Luke. Jade tells them that Luke needs to rest as they need all their strength to fight the New Order of Lorelei and sneak onto Eldrant.
A soldier then suddenly barges in to tell them that someone had come claiming to be an emissary for said New Order.
Tumblr media
Largo has come to ask them if they would agree to apologize and surrender to the New Order under Fon Master Mohs. King Ingobert declines and says they have decided to abolish the Score. Largo asked if this meant war but the king said that it isn't unless the New Order themselves decide to instigate anything.
Largo was about to leave when Luke called out to him to return the locket and Largo's reaction confirmed to the others that the item really was his'. Luke asks why Largo would side with Mohs and not with them and his answer was he's pledged his loyalty to Van.
Tumblr media
After that meeting, the king asked both Natalia and Luke to come with him for a different talk. In his room, King Ingobert admits to Natalia what he knows of her real father: the man is a mercenary named Badaq who is now known as Largo the Black Lion. With this revealed, the king tells Natalia that she doesn't have to go and fight alongside them and go into battle against her biological father.
The others are told about this later which made them worry about Natalia who is alone to think at the moment.
Tumblr media
Spinoza is checking on the Jewel of Lorelei and confirmed they could stop the Planet Storm with it by charging the jewel with Seventh Fonons at the Radiation Gate as it would activate the fonic arte and stop the fonic circle. But at the same time they must also help work on the Absorption Gate by using Yulia's power like the fonic hymn sung by Tear. With this in mind, the group will now be split into two teams.
Natalia comes in to the room to say that she'd be going with them. She tells her worried friends that her connection to Largo isn't a reason to avoid the fight, rather, it’s the reason why she must deal with it.
Tumblr media
Aboard the Albiore, Natalia asked Tear how Tear felt knowing her brother Van was up to something terrible. Tear says she felt confused and didn't understand what exactly he was going to do but afterwards decided that she would stop him. Natalia then asked how Tear found the resolve to fight her family and Tear says she thought it was her responsibility to do so as Van's sister.
Tumblr media
Jade, Tear, and Anise are the ones to work on the Absorption Gate. What awaited them there is Mohs himself and a familiar face: another Ion replica. Van also appears later to give Mohs a Seventh Fonstone. Mohs then escapes with the Ion replica in tow and when the others tried to run after them, Van gets in their way.
Tear asked how Van is here and Van explained that when he fell, he got absorbed into the Planet Storm which made the fonons in his body dissociate and there he saw Sync. Van sang Yulia's fonic hymns that acted as a pact with Lorelei and so Lorelei put back together both Van and Sync's bodies which let them return. After that, Van seemed to be in pain for a moment and pushed the others away with a blast.
Before he left, he tells Tear that next time, he would show no mercy even to her.
Tumblr media
The group later caught up with Mohs who had the Ion replica already read out the Score which revealed how Auldrant will end. Mohs didn't like what he heard and was about to hit the Ion replica when Anise came in. Jade said they now have no choice but to fight Mohs as his neural contamination had gone too far already. Tear still wanted to try and talk Mohs out of all this and his response is to attack.
Tumblr media
Luke, Guy, and Tear is now at the Radiation Gate where Largo is waiting. With an arrow pointed towards Largo, Natalia asked why he is working for Van and calling him by his real name.
Finding out that Natalia already knows the truth, Largo tell them of his past: he returned home from an escort mission only to find his wife, Sylvia, and their newborn child missing. He searched for them everywhere only to find that his wife took her own life due to her baby being stolen.
Largo left Baticul and in his journey, he met Van who told him that their entire lives are following the already written Score which meant everything, including his wife's death, was already preordained. It made him hate the Score as it meant whatever they did wouldn't change anything that's already in it no matter what. This made him decide to work for Van.
Tumblr media
Their goal is to eradicate the Score and Lorelei himself who embodies the planet's memory so that everyone would be free to choose their own futures. This includes killing the originals as their existence is connected to the existence of a part of the planet's memory.
Luke tells him it's not right to turn a blind eye to the deaths of those who still exist and Largo replies that Luke had killed thousands of replicas himself. Luke's answer was that it's what he had chosen to do to preserve the original world. That answer satisfied Largo and declares Luke as a worthy opponent.
Natalia tries to talk to him and says he's her father but Largo says his daughter is now gone, stolen from him 18 years ago which shocked Natalia. Largo then says that their fight shall now begin.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Tear's words to Mohs doesn't work and knowing they can no longer talk some sense into him, Jade attacks. Anise follows and Tear, with an apology, also does which defeated Mohs. Despite his actions, Tear understood that Mohs is just like them who wanted to save the world but it's just that he thought that he's doing so by following the Score.
Anise runs toward the Ion replica and invites him to come with them and the replica, who Jade says is probably still a blank slate, happily accepts.
Tumblr media
Luke, Guy, and Natalia are facing against Largo. Natalia's hands are shaking as she held her bow and arrow which she's pointing at her biological father and Luke notices and tells her to stay back. Largo then strikes and Luke blocks him and ask why they have to fight when both their goals are the same.
Largo says their battle is where their convictions are put to the test - their side believes the world should be reborn while Luke's group wanted to preserve the old one and start over. Their goals might be the same but their plans for it are different.
Largo tries to break the platform they're on and Guy attacks to stop him while Luke still continues to ask him to end the fight. Largo doesn't listen and attacks Luke which made the latter lose his weapon. As he was about to kill Luke, Natalia uses her arrow using an arte to penetrate Largo's armor.
Tumblr media
Largo praises Natalia's shot and then advised Luke not to show mercy to his enemies as it would be difficult to fight with his heart not in it. Largo takes out his locket and tells Natalia that she looks just like her biological mother Sylvia.
Finally, he says farewell to his daughter Meryl and passes away. Natalia falls to her knees and calls Largo her father for the first and last time.
Tumblr media
The two groups, finally without enemies around, is able to do their tasks successfully. Now they're about to head towards Eldrant.
The boys are worried about Natalia but she says she's alright and that she'd go with them as she has her own convictions as well.
--
You know, I kinda wish I could’ve seen their reactions to Luke coming back home alive after his intended sacrifice. It would’ve been heartwarming but also sad since he’s still gonna disappear and they don’t know it. Glad to see that his dad at least told Luke he’s proud.
Natalia feeling conflicted cause she just found out her real dad is her enemy made me feel bad. She didn’t brush it off and think it’s not important cause she doesn’t know the guy enough and instead, she actually thought about her connection to him. She asks Tear about the latter’s own experience but while they’re somewhat the same, it’s also different with Tear being close to Van before she found out he’s bad while Natalia had just now realized her real father is alive but they may have to fight to the death.
Some returning characters have arrived... sort of. The Ion replica (whose name will be revealed next episode) and Van himself. While his plan is to hurt so many other people, it’s probably hard for Van to have to let go of the little sister he practically raised on his own and to get the resolve to hurt her next time you meet.
Mohs is a dick and I hate him but I still think it’s nice of Tear to try to understand where he’s coming from and why he’s like that. Mohs is doing all this for power but in a way, he also thinks what he’s doing is right. It probably sucks for him to hear that everything he’s done would be for naught cause their entire world is going to end as it’s said on the all-knowing, always accurate piece of magic rock he’s been obsessed with.
I think that’s one of the interesting things about the story: every single important party, no matter how selfish their desires are, still hopes that by the end of whatever their plans are, the results would be good for everyone and not everyone would suffer. It’s different for each who this “everyone” is though with the protagonist team wanting for the world to be better while Van wants the new one to be. It was already shown last time that even if we view the royalty as bad for being okay with sacrificing innocent people, it’s because they want many others to live. Is it okay in of itself? No - Emperor Peony even said so and even King Ingobert had apologized more than once. But I guess like many choices with good intentions, they’re just hoping that theirs end up being the right one.
I guess it’s why I can’t completely hate most of the characters. They don’t see any perfect choice to their goal cause there’s none.
Speaking of choices, Largo respects those who give everything for their goal with resolve. Luke finally taking responsibility for his choices and sticking to them got Largo’s respect. On the other hand, he probably realized Natalia might lose her resolve so before the fight, he tells her that he doesn’t have a daughter anymore. He knows he can’t be father-daughter with Natalia anymore as it’s too late but at least he could make Natalia follow on the choices she had made.
Largo’s life sucked though. Imagine coming home from work and seeing the house trashed and your family missing. Then he found his wife dead and their daughter stolen away and then finding out why and that it was all planned by destiny itself. Even though he chose to side with Van, Largo isn’t a terrible person. I think it was nice he gave Luke advice when he knew he lost. He also praised Natalia for being able to give him the final shot. This isn’t even the first time cause I remember him saying something similar to Natalia before. He acts like he doesn’t care but he still does.
I’m not gonna lie, I teared up when he said farewell to Natalia by calling her Meryl and Natalia afterwards calling him father. That was their last moments as a family.
Felt bad for Luke too cause he’s been trying to get Largo to side with them not just cause they did have sort of the same goal but also for Natalia.
Also, Natalia says in the end that she’d continue to fight cause she has her own convictions - which is something that Largo thinks is important to have and to hold on to. Even if Natalia is on the other side of the battlefield and would help stop Van’s plans, you just know Largo would be proud of his daughter.
Anyways, other than those story-related stuff, I have to say the fight scenes aren’t that good. They all ended pretty fast but I guess that’s what happens when you try to condense a whole game into 26 episodes. Still not that bad though! I’ve seen worse lol. At least ToA is able to tell the story as much as they could. Still not perfect but it’s better than other attempts. *looks at TWEWY anime which condensed everything in 12 episodes*
Final battles are about to start as they’re going to Eldrant! The only God-Generals left to deal with are Sync and Legretta. I’ll miss this after I finish this rewatch.

Dimileth Tales Series AUs/Crossovers
I like the idea of a Tales of the Abyss AU, since Crest Stones and Fon Stones are also similar. Fon Stones turn people into monsters if the person who uses them is not worthy or strong enough to read the Score. I swear, I get so many Tales vibes from Three Houses at times! Byleth could be the Light of the Sacred Flame, born as the scion of Sothis (instead of Lorelei). She hears Sothis' voice just like how Luke hears Lorelei's. Again, like how Luke's soul is part of the aggregate sentience of the Seventh Fonon, her soul is part of Sothis' in Three Houses. The song of the Nabateans could take the place of the Grand Fonic Hymn in this AU; Edelgard is able to use it thanks to being a descendant of Seiros (who replaces Yulia here). Dimitri is part of the Gardios family and a descendant of one of Seiros' disciples, able to use the Sigmund style of swordplay. Like Guy, he is from Hod and witnesses its destruction as well as the annihilation of its people - his family among them - at the hands of Duke Jeralt's army (who replaces Luke's father). Dimitri joins the Eisner (replacing the Fabres) family as a vassal for the duke's daughter Byleth, vowing retribution. However, he becomes childhood friends with her and later falls in love. He journeys to find her after a hyperresonance transports Byleth and Edelgard somewhere else.
Tales of Symphonia AU: Byleth as the Chosen and her father Jeralt, a Papal Knight originally born in Tethe'alla a century before and a former member of Cruxis now working as a mercenary in Sylvarant. His wife was part of the Angelus project and they fell in love after he  met her at a human ranch, leading to their escape and his betrayal of Cruxis. She gives birth to Byleth just before the Exsphere completely takes over and then turns into an Exbelua; with no way to change her back, Jeralt is forced to slay his wife. He goes into hiding with his daughter, settling in the  small coastal town of Izoold.   Dimitri is one of Byleth's childhood friends, an orphan who witnessed Desians massacre his entire family as a result of his friend Glenn trying to stop them from taking people to the nearest human ranch. He harbours a deep hatred for Desians as a result and vows to kill any who get in his way out of a lust for vengeance on their kind. Dedue is the only half-elf he can trust because his life was saved by him after the Desians tried to finish the job. When Byleth is called to the Church of Sothis to receive the oracle on her sixteenth birthday, everything changes. An angel of Cruxis, Seteth, bestows upon her a Cruxis Crystal - a jewel through which the goddess blesses the Chosen with mystical powers and commences the beginning of her rebirth as an angel. Thus, Byleth's journey to regenerate the world begins. Dimitri, who is secretly in love with the Chosen, joins in on the quest to protect her. On the way, Byleth and Dimitri discover the truth about Cruxis, world regeneration, the Desians and the goddess.
Dimitri and Byleth get Exspheres which are both keepsakes from their mothers. Dimitri's gives him immense and boundless strength. Byleth's augments the magical ability she has thanks to traces of elven blood within her (as a result of Jeralt getting injected with it by Cruxis back when he was mortal) and allows her to use powerful spells. Given what we know of Jeralt receiving special treatment from Rhea to save his life and his wife being infused with blood carrying the Crest of Flames, it's an easy parallel to make because people in Tales of Symphonia get this done but with elven blood which allows them to use magic.
I swear, Rhea and Mithos would get along swimmingly and the goddesses Martel and Sothis would share the same sentiment that their resurrection is not the answer. Furthermore, Crest Stones and Exspheres and Demonic Beasts and Exbeluas, anyone? I can't be the only person who sees it. Plus, the idea that Sothis caused Byleth's lack of emotion etc is almost exactly the same as what happens when the Chosen becomes a vessel for the goddess Martel because like Byleth, the Chosen will also eventually lose their identity and get taken over.
Seteth works as a messenger for Cruxis while actually spear-heading a covert rebellion. I see him being like Yuan in this AU and leading the Renegades. Like with Martel possessing Colette to confront Mithos, I can see Sothis possessing Byleth but only briefly to call Rhea out on the atrocities she has committed by creating the religion she heads. Claude could be the Chosen of Tethe'alla - he's so much like Zelos! It's what I first thought when I saw him, actually, before Three Houses came out.
As for Edelgard, I can see her using Cruxis as a way to get power (via a Cruxis Crystal and an angel transformation) and then turning on them to crush the Church of Sothis. She is after the Eternal Sword so she can recreate Aselia (the world) in her own image but Byleth gets there first. Thanks to her special Exsphere, the elven blood in Byleth's veins is strong enough for the sword not to reject her. Thus, the sword gives her power over time and space - fitting, considering how Sothis' ability Divine Pulse works and of course the fact that Byleth gets the Sword of the Creator before Edelgard does.
