Oh my god, staff.....
This auraboa issue with the lore being (most likely) unintentionally racist is especially maddening to me, because the concept they seem to want to portray (based purely on the encyclopedia entry) is very similar to an OC I have, and so I can say with experience, it's incredibly difficult to convey! ESPECIALLY when you try to portray it inside a short story where you're cutting lines for word count (their forum reply mentioned they left out some lines to keep it short)
Instead of getting across the concept the encyclopedia entry seems to allude to, the short story just accidentally walks into like 10 racism rakes in a row and its truly agonizing for me to watch, knowing what i assume the actual lore's intent is.
encyclopedia quote: "Older generations of Auraboa existed in a constant state of communion with their fellows. They refer to this connection as The Loop. In this persistent state they perceive time and memory in a non-linear manner; their intertwined considerations for past and present events are such that it became difficult for a dragon outside The Loop to grasp the intentions of these ancient wyrms."
what seems to be the intention is that the auraboa are a hivemind that doesn't experience time the same way other dragons do- they experience past, present, and future all at once and thus cannot communicate well NOT because they have a different language, but because they aren't experiencing TIME ITSELF in the same fashion as the dragons! However, in practice, in the story, the auraboa seem to speak with words in the proper order, just haltingly, since otherwise the story itself couldn't work at all.
another encyclopedia bit: "The newest generation of Auraboa is not linked to The Loop in their waking hours. While they move through the world, they are less directly accessible and read as "silent" to Auraboa who are within the communal state. This disconnection has allowed the young Auraboa to experience time in a linear fashion, and with this new understanding they have begun to form connections with other species of dragon that have never before been possible."
The encyclopedia seems more clear about the Linear Time thing, and that being why they can actually communicate sensibly, but in the act of having a story where the older ones DO communicate with the outside dragons and get a point across, they've kind of not shown the reason why dragons and auraboa COULDNT communicate before! which is! a big thing!
If they'd implemented the auraboa speaking with everything in the wrong order instead of halting single words at a time, i feel like the intention would get across better. As it is, it just smacks them directly into the 'simple native' stereotype with a truly awful tripping into the 'having our kids be taught by outsiders' which is. a really wretched parallel, as many native people have spoken of the unimaginable violence of residential schools.
I feel like the encyclopedia entry Alone isn't nearly as awful (still not great, but not as bad) as the extremely poorly implemented story that managed to ddr dance onto a bunch of horrible tropes.
they were literally so bad at conveying the fact that the auraboa are a hivemind that is unmoored from time, that i see people misinterpreting the lore as auraboa having their own weird language that other dragons can't understand! there was not enough effort put into conveying the ideas they tried to convey, and what WAS put forward was literally chock full of the most unfortunate parallels physically possible.

Speaking of the coli.
I think my clan lore will treat the Coliseum as an actual coliseum. It's an entertainment venue where dragons show off their combat prowess while an audience roots for their favorites.
All the different venues are magical stages or set pieces to add drama and indicate the level dragons are fighting at. The monsters are some kind of hologram inspired by Sornieth wildlife. (At one point, the coliseum captured actual animals, much like the real Roman coliseum. This practice was abandoned because it's unethical and, frankly, more expensive than the simulation is.) In-game "level" is a representation of a dragon's coliseum standing, and determines which stages they have access to. The goal is to survive as many rounds as you can. Rewards are randomized loot and increased standing, which allows access to more prestigious stages and perhaps better loot.
The Coliseum is run by Shadow dragons, probably Nocturnes. Shadow flight is all about games, entertainment, and winning, after all; what's blood sport if not an extremely high-stake game?
Night of the Nocturne is a promotional event designed to draw more traffic to the coliseum. The showrunners add high-value loot to attract more contestants, and a slew of fanciful mimic foes to add more spectacle and wow audiences. The whole thing is highly profitable and pays for most of the Coliseum's annual expenses.

Hey. What would happen if dragons tried to test how to tear apart Emperor's with the only other current dragon breed that has 2 heads naturally in an attempt to avoid making an Emperor to study?
Tumblr media
A mess and a half, and maybe a larger cover-up than anyone could've expected? But who would ever assume anything bad could happen to an Ice Aberration when combined with Lighting energy in bulk and [REDACTED, SUBJECT MATTER REMOVED]? Certainly this wouldn't work out properllyyyyy-

I've been eating up the infection au's on tumblr, so here's one for flight rising about all the flights & how it developed!
Shade Virus: Upon awakening the Shade, the Arcanist realizes that something has gone terribly wrong. The dragons he rules have been getting...sick. The diseased dragons cough up black mucous and rapidly starve, rejecting food and water. He has yet to understand what the Shade has done to his dragons, but he's running out of time.
Arcane: Since the progression of the virus, Arcane is in ruins. There are very few survivors left as they try to navigate a Shade stricken land. The Arcanist was the first deity to die.
Wind: A temporary safe haven for homeless dragons (as long as they are not ill). Windsinger has banned all travel, so Wind Flight is grounded. Infected dragons are herded or thrown into the Twisting Crescendo.
Plague: Plaguebringer is endlessly amused. All infected are killed upon sight for being weak and succumbing to disease. Ironically this makes it the safest area... if you are strong enough to survive.
Ice: Complete Lockdown, no contact with other tribes. No one allowed in, no one allowed out. Any infected are placed into jail. There's talk of guards threatening dragons for money... those who can't cough it up are thrown in as a meal.
Fire: The naturally high temperature of fire discourages incubation. They are currently working with Lightning to discover a vaccine. Dragons here believe there is no hope of a cure.
Lightning: Dragons are overworked and overtired, which makes them very susceptible to the Shade Virus. Power and engineering is no longer a priority, just survival.
Light: Suspiciously quiet. No one has heard anything since the virus began to spread across Sornieth. A scout sent from Shadow discovered that he couldn't cross into light territory. Some kind of force field he said. All he could see were... uninfected dead dragons. Reports of rotting smell, but no signs of life.
Shadow: All shadow primal killed, upon suspicion of being involved with the shade. Those who escaped Her wrath may be immune. Shadow dragons are currently shunned by other flights due to an irrational fear that they may be carrying the disease.
Earth: Since their territory touches Arcane, they had very early infection. Dragons here wear heavy armor to prevent bites from infected & masks to prevent transmission. They are currently trying to distribute knowledge about preventative measures, but there are too few members.
Nature: Dragons living in the Gladeveins currently suspect that the disease can spread through unsanitary water, as well as bites and airborne particles from infected dragons. Discovered first case of Shade infected plants, currently running out of food...
Water: Reports of a wingless dragon the 'Shade Queen' purposefully infecting dragons. It seems in the Tidelord's absence things have descended into anarchy. Avoid water at all costs, you will be dragged under if you approach.

Had this musing with Anza the other night thinking about ancients.
Lorewise, Imperials ARE Light's ancient right? And they are the only dragons to have the danger of becoming Emperors.
What if Emperors as we know them now are a corruption of what they once were? What if Emperors were first and were then cut down to be Imperials and the reason they turn into Emperors is because it's their dying magic desperately trying to return to it's original form, through any means.
Alive it is contained within a single vessel, one crafted specifically to contain a portion of it. But dead the vessel is broken, no longer able to hold it back.
The reason you can't breed change to Imperial is because there's no true Emperors left to split. The further away from generation one the young Imperials are, the more diluted the magic, and the less likely they are to become Emperors even if their bodies were not properly handled.

Martyrs Waste Chapter 1: Dust and Ash
Sanguine, Silas and Khadiyah travel to the Waste to find Nerissa
_______________________________
The air was thick here, much more so than they had been used to before. Dense fog hid the land below them in a mystery of red and orange hues with the occasional sickly green bioluminescence shining through dimly. But the smell was familiar to Sanguine, who had always belonged here, no matter how far he had tried to run from that truth.
“How much farther?”
“We’ll get there when we get there!”
Silas wailed a pitiful cry of woe is me. “But my wings hurt!”
“Oh shush, you’ll be right at home there.” Khadiyah laughed as she ridiculed her mate. Sanguine, who flew ahead of them, couldn’t help but laugh.
“True, it is called the Martyrs Waste after all.” he chimed in, always down for a little jab at his dear brother. Silas groaned and rolled his eyes. “You two have no empathy! I’m getting old, you know!”
“Sanguine is older than you and he has not complained.” Khadiyah reminded Silas.
“Because we haven’t gone very far!” Sanguine agreed, picking up the pace to show his point. He might have been older, but he hadn’t lost his form yet. In fact, he probably looked healthier than he ever had. Years of Rowan’s care and love had left him in peak physical and mental shape. His hide was shiny, blood red and healthy despite it’s many scars. His wings beat as strongly as ever, his spikes were sharp and his eyesight- well, that was perhaps a little questionable, but it was good enough.
Sanguine saddened a bit at the thought of Rowan. His old mate had returned to the Wasteland’s embrace recently, ‘to slumber with the Plague Mother until they would be reunited and reborn together’, or so Rowan had phrased it. But Sanguine still had a part to play, lessons to teach and learn, and so here he was, honouring Rowan’s last request.
Go see Nerissa.
Apologize to her for pushing her away. She strove for his acceptance and he had cast her out. He would be lying if he said he hadn’t thought of doing this himself, but always there was something that would stop him from going, an excuse, a child that needed him more, an injury that prevented him from going, he had to hunt for food for them all, etcetera etcetera. And recently, taking care of Rowan had taken all his focus. Now though, there was nothing to justify not going any more. Rowan was gone, all his children had flown the nest. It was time he made amends with Nerissa, to avoid becoming his mother. To avoid her making the same mistakes he did.
Silas and Khadiyah had offered to accompany him, curious to see their niece once again. They had heard of her clan in the Martyrs Waste, an area that had been the site of many a battle in the past, not in the least between the Mother and her mortal enemy, the Gladekeeper. It was a place of great infamy, where Plague’s toughest dragons battled each other for the right to survive. Those who died in battle there were named martyr to the Plague Mother, though Sanguine was sceptical of this practice himself.
“There, the rock that looks like a mushroom!” Silas called with relief. “Finally!”
Sanguine said nothing, feeling nervous as they descended through the thick fog, Sand particles swept up into his face and battered his hide before they reached the floor, dust and sand kicking up as the three of them landed not far from their landmark. Though the air was thick, it felt welcoming as Sanguine breathed in deep, the scent of home.
Silas was also taking deep breaths, though it was more like he was gasping for air.
“Mother save me, I can’t breathe with this thick fog and sand in my nostrils!” he complained.
“Don’t be dramatic.” Khadiyah frowned and swept her tail up to whirl an extra load of sand Silas’ way. Silas coughed when he got some in his mouth, covering his face with his wing while Khadiyah laughed wickedly.
Sanguine took no notice of their antics behind him, taking in the environment. A huge rock formation towered before them, shaped somewhat like a mushroom. Specks of green luminescence shimmer through the dust, some kind of fungus? The sun behind the rock cast a large shadow through the sand and the fog, but it’s heat was still present, warming Sanguine’s deep red hide. He strode forwards carefully, looking around with purpose for a sign of any dragons other than them. So far, nothing. He turned his head to Silas and Khadiyah.
“Quiet you two. We have to consider the possibility we are not welcome here.” he reminded them.
“Right, because you were rude to her.” Silas said, deadpan. Khadiyah grinned in unison with Silas, like the little shit she was. “He’s got a point.”
Sanguine sighed, quietly shaking his head before moving ahead.
A natural arch big enough to accommodate a large Guardian stood before them, but beyond that he could see nothing but a turmoil of swirling sand. Still, he knew he was in the right place. He could smell his daughter’s distinct scent, sense her presence.
“Stay here.”
Sanguine said the words to Silas and Khadiyah sternly, then proceeded into the thick wall of red sand before him. It battered him, blinded him, all of those things he had expected, but he had not expected the fluorescent green light to pierce through the sand as if a great eye had locked it’s gaze upon him.
The green light was just enough to project a silhouette through the dust on top of the rock. It was far away, but Sanguine recognized the silhouette as an Aberration dragon. When she spoke, it sounded like two voices at once spoke in unison, echoing between the rocky walls.
“I knew you would come.”

mothsgrave funerary practices are so. here's a settlement thats been around long before the hewn city rose & fell and they always buried their dead as a peaceful way to send them back to the earth and once they started getting up and meandering (shade) (it was the shade) they didn't change any traditions they simply adapted. and now there's a dedicated job that's just putting grandpa back to bed (in the dirt) (he's dead) for the 7645th time.

" Tell me every single thing you need from me // I'd do anything for you my deity // Your wish is my command... "
Finally got off my ass and fully detailed information about The Pig. A Guardian who's charge was found within a ghostly entity known as Eyeless Mag, Pig abandoned better reasoning and restraint to completely swear himself into her service, hunting and killing those who earn his ire in a pointed effort to draw her back to earth even momentarily, Mag herself only present among the living when the time comes to bury a body, carve a stone, and return flesh to earth.
Some flicker flame of him remains, though, through his choice of prey- ever fond of those who might seek comfort in a painted grin, Mag's sway over him only calls that he brings her back to the mortal realm- he's chosen to usher her back in the bodies of the irredeemable.
