РЕФЛЕКСИИ: Изкуство между традицията и съвременността

Събитието тази седмица в сто��ичния културен живот е откриването на изложбата „Между традицията и модернизма. Образи на родното в българското изкуство от 20-те години на ХХ век” в Софийска градска художествена галерия. Тя е опит да се представи един сегмент от художествения живот в България  от първата половина на ХХ век. И опитът е изключително успешен – и като подбор на произведенията, и като дизайн на самата изложба.  

Куратори на изложбата са Аделина Филева, Станислава Николова и Любен Домозетски. Консултант към проекта е Татяна Димитрова, художник Надежда Олег Ляхова. „За българското изкуство годините на това десетилетие са време на активен и многолик художествен живот, който съществено се модернизира. Експозицията обединява произведения, които показват различните посоки на модернизиране, но същевременно отразява продължението на традициите от предходните десетилетия в младото българско изкуство. Фокусът е ориентиран в една определена посока – търсене на национална идентичност и изграждане на образи, въплъщаващи тази идея. Обособени са четири отделни тематични линии, които ясно могат да се проследят в българското изкуство от периода, а именно: интерпретации, вдъхновени от приказно-поетичния фолклор, произведения, свързани с християнството и християнското наследство, интерес към обредите и обичаите и представяне на образи от българското село. Специално място е отделено на печатната графична продукция, а експонати на приложното изкуство допълват представата за художествения живот от епохата”, пише в анотацията за изложбата.

Иван Милев - “Светогорска легенда”, 1926

Тя представя творби на знакови за българското изкуство автори: Иван Милев, Владимир Димитров-Майстора, Сирак Скитник, Иван Пенков, Николай Райнов, Пенчо Георгиев, Иван Лазаров, Никола Кожухаров, Борис Денев, Георги Машев и др. Произведенията са от фонда на СГХГ, на Национална галерия – София, Регионален исторически музей – София, Институт за етнология и фолклористика с етнографски музей – БАН, Държавна агенция „Архиви”, Национална художествена академия, Национална библиотека „Св. св. Кирил и Методий”, Съюз на българските художници, Градска художествена галерия – Пловдив, художествените галерии в Стара Загора, Казанлък, Кюстендил, Пазарджик, Сливен, Шумен, Русе, Исторически музей – Самоков, регионалните исторически музеи в Добрич и Враца, частни колекции. Проектът, който е изключително амбициозен и богат, е посветен на председателството на България на Европейския съвет и се осъществява с подкрепата на Аурубис България - АД и Програма „Култура” на Столична община.

Алдо Джианоти при откриването на изложбата си “Олимпия”

А колкото до съвременността – тя е в самостоятелната изложба „Олимпия” на живеещия във Виена артист Алдо Джианоти в Софийски арсенал – Музей за съвременно изкуство, филиал на Националната галерия. Изложбата е създадена специално за музея и се осъществява в партньорство с FLUCA /инициатива на Фондация „Отворени изкуства” и Австрийско посолство в София/ и Виенски клуб-България с подкрепата на Пловдив 2019, Столична Община, Община Пловдив и Федерално Канцлерство на република Австрия. Изложбата „Олимпия“ взима своето име от местността на полуостров Пелопонес в Гърция, където са се провеждали Олимпийските игри през древността. Със своите рисунки Алдо Джианоти пренася духа на тази антична спортна арена в музея, където публиката има възможност да изследва спортната тематика не само физически, но и да се занимае с въпроси като национална идентичност, съревнование и субординация в световен мащаб. Авторът цели да превърне институцията в един своеобразен стадион на възможности, взаимовръзки и саркастични коментари – поглед върху нашето общество, започващ от индивидуалното през колективното до националното, глобалното и универсалното.

С тази изложба павилионът FLUCA идва и в София. Това е проект на фондация „Отворени изкуства” и Посолството на република Австрия в България. Начална точка на проекта с куратор Урсула Мария Пробст е употребата на морски карго контейнер като пърформативна инсталация/скулптура.  FLUCA ще бъде отворена платформа за голям брой публични събития от май до октомври 2018 и 2019 година. Концепцията на павилиона идва от FLUC – известно пространство за урбанистика, съвременна музика, изкуство и пърформанс във Виена, също съставено от няколко карго контейнера. Проектът цели сътрудничество между артистичните сцени на България и Австрия и привличане на нова, любопитна аудитория, която да участва активно в културния живот на града. Проектът FLUCA ще представи богата програма - дигитално изкуство и нови технологии, улично изкуство и градски дизайн, музика, кино, танц, театър и литература, в различни формати – изложби, концерти, кинопрожекции, уъркшопи, дискусии и срещи с артисти. През месеците май - юли 2018 г. FLUCA - австрийски културен павилион, ще бъде в София. През септември и октомври 2018 г. ще бъде в Пловдив.

Расим с Железния орден, който получи

И още за съвременно изкуство – навръх рождения си ден на 1 май скулпторът и художник Венци Занков връчи в столичната галерия ONE за девети път Железния си орден за съвременно изкуство. Този път негов избраник беше концептуалният артист и художник Расим / RASSIM® – Красимир Кръстев/. Както каза Венцислав Занков – журито, тоест аз, връчваме наградата на Расим, който пък благодари за оказаното доверие. Отличието се присъжда на художник и събитие с „друг поглед” върху съвременното българско изкуство, което е извън полезрението на мейнстрийма и официално представената култура и изкуство, но е с ясен принос към тях, гласи регламентът на наградата на Венци. Сам провокативен и непрестанно търсещ художник, режисьор, отличаван актьор и преподавател, Занков мотивира избора на артиста за 2018 с търсенето на истинността в изкуството, професионализма и качеството на работа, както и уникалността в подхода и актуалността му към настоящето. Сред носителите на Железния орден на Занков досега са: Иво Димчев, Дан Тенев, Спартак Дерменджиев, Веселина Сариева (Пловдивска нощ на музеите), д-р Галентин Гатев, проф. Орлин Дворянов и други.

Венци Занков и Расим

Имало е различни тълкувания на това негово учредяване на орден – намигване към институциите, артистична акция, принизяване на официозността, отличаване на хора, свързани със съвременното изкуство, които остават извън полезрението на официалната нормативност… Ето как Венци Занков обясни преди време в разговор за „въпреки.com” смисъла на своя орден: „Ако има някакви официални версии за изкуство и култура, има и други хора – и реших, че могат да се изведат. Защо с моето име – защото реших, че човек трябва да поеме отговорност със себе си и своето име. Не някакво абстрактно пожелателно бъдеше. Аз го давам на еди кой си. Има значение дали аз имам някаква стойност и този, на който го давам дали също е стойностен. Това е някакъв такъв експеримент между частното и публичното. Защото аз съм частно лице - един човек решава да си дава ордени. Но в един момент може да се окаже, че това има значение. И то с това, че заемаш такава позиция със себе си. И я защитаваш по някакъв начин – едно с избора и друго с това, което правиш. И това е напрежение за мен, защото трябва да доказвам, че аз трябва да го давам”, каза художникът. . ≈

Weißes Licht besteht aus allen Farben. Im Rahmen des Programms von FLUCA 2019 stellt die Golden Pixel Cooperative das Spektrum ihrer Arbeitsweisen vor. Die Zusammenstellung der Film- und Videoarbeiten folgt einer visuellen Assoziationskette, die Bewegtbilder als Handlungsraum künstlerischer Selbstermächtigung versteht.

Die Palette der performativen und dokumentarischen Arbeitsweisen zeigt die Aneignung urbaner und musealer Räume sowie Landschaften, stellt Beziehungen über Blickachsen und Gesten her und erzeugt neue Wahrnehmungsweisen durch die Bearbeitung gefundenen Bildmaterials.

White Light is made of all colors. As part of the FLUCA 2019 program, the Vienna based “Golden Pixel Cooperative” presents video works by their members. The compilation of film and video works is based on visual associations and understands moving images as a space for artistic self-empowerment. The range of performative and documentary modes of work shows the appropriation of urban and museum spaces as well as landscapes, establishes relationships via visual axes and gestures, and generates new modes of perception through the processing of found material.

The color temperature of different light sources is measured in Kelvin. 6500 Kelvin corresponds to the value of overcast daylight and is used as a standard for the neutral registration of white surfaces. Unconsciously the human eye adapts to different light conditions, while cameras need adjustment through white balance. 6500 is a video essay on the relativity of words, questioning the application of absolute values in an argument, visualized through a play on colors, their spaces, and their highly subjective perception. Quotes from Ludwig Wittgenstein’s “Remarks on Colour” emphasize this rhythmic flickering and slightly absurd conversation between colour and language.

La Ruta de la Amistad (eng. The Route of Friendship) is a public space project developed along 17km of Mexico City’s southern highway with 22 large scale sculptures made by 22 artists invited from all around the world. The concrete sculptures were completed in 1968 as part of a cultural project in conjunction with the Olympic Games. In the aftermath of the student’s protests of 1968 in Mexico and the student massacre around the time of the Olympics, this sculptural project was veiled in silence and eventually swallowed by expanding urban development, rendering these works almost invisible. The video work (2015-16) by Luiza Margan was developed together with Maya Santiago (MEX) and plays with ways of reinterpreting and appropriating public space, facing failed utopias of modernity and threats of historical amnesia in the rapidly developing city.

“Was ausgestellt wird” (What is exhibited) is shot at the Gustinus Ambrosi Museum in Vienna in 2010, for which Koger developed a choreography for the protagonist, a hula hoop dancer. Exploring the exhibition room and Ambrosi’s ambiguous past, the result was a performance that both describes and charts space, setting out to reorder the exhibition room and museum rhetorics. Focusing on this situation, Koger intervenes in the representation of rigid role models, positioning, as a contrast, the dancing body of a spectator that is completely out of keeping with the usual behaviour of museum visitors. In this way, the artist adds a new narrative layer to the history of the museum, one that tells of appropriation and empowerment. (Text: Miriam Kathrein)

Double 8 is an encounter with Linda Christanell, artist of the feminist avant-garde of the 1970s. In a decade of departure - following the male-occupied social criticism of Viennese Actionism - artists like her are questioning the social power and gender relations and claiming their place in the art business and the history of art. In Double 8 the need for interchange with the history of film and its makers becomes tangible: as mutual viewing and being viewed. Two handheld cameras, two spools of double-8 film, four frames: two artists from different generations encounter one another by pointing the camera at each other.

I’ve been living in Vienna since 2012. Since then I observe the city and my immediate living space. Vienna is a compact city unlike Bremen, my former college town, as well as my home town Seoul. That fascinated me.Through out this years public transport has become vehicle for my observation. The video has documented the manufacturing process of the installations, however, this is not a documentary. The video establishes the connection between the two installations. It also shows the archives of my fascination. In the production, while the analog film mechanism is played over the time, the performer’s body plays a central role.

The work is about the transportation of felled trees by helicopters in Graubunden, Switzerland. The video shows only a part of the sky, which is repeatedly traversed by a helicopter with a tree. This way of carrying trees is not uncommon in the mountains, but very expensive and therefore rarely applied.

The point of his finger, which twists backward with him, provokes a change in the shot to reveal the view of a bulging baroque dust cloud being sucked inside a building by a nearly unstoppable force, from which, in a din, an imposing structure in its entire, undamaged splendor emerges. This process occurs five times altogether from various perspectives and distances. One seems reminded of the legendary explosion at the end of Michelangelo Antonioni´s Zabriskie Point, but with a decisive difference: Viktoria Schmid re-demolishes. Her working material comprises private recordings from viewers who witnessed the demolition of the building parts of the Eastman Kodak company complex in Rochester and published their self-filmed documentary clips onto YouTube. Many of them had worked in the factory, which makes them witnesses to the destruction of their former workplace. Viktoria Schmid compiled the clips and played them backwards. In the regenerative movement, the implosion turns into an act of constituting. And thus, the reducing to rubbles of the building parts becomes a spectacular reconstruction, accompanied by the amazed shouts of the audience (“WOW” is the palindrome of the moment!). In this way, using digital means, a party-like tribute is paid to the glorious resurrection of the factory for color-sensitive analogue film. (Melanie Letschnig)

A hard drive, 2.8 terabyte leftover data from a project that was shot 10 years ago. In 2008, the author and filmmaker Iris Blauensteiner made her first short movie. Now she sifts through this waste material: outtake scenes, photographs, sound files, e-mails, script passages, discarded ideas. This data was archived and well stored, but time has taken its toll. Old data formats cannot be played anymore because they are no longer compatible with current players. The multitude of read errors and image distortions disallow a comfortable recollection of the past, the pictures and sounds are not what they used to be. Ghostly, eerily magical scenes arise from the digital waste material and read errors, they reach into the visible and audible spectrum. Memories are recycled. They require a different cinematic experience, a new narrative, a different film. „the_other_images“ is an experimental documentary short film. It raises the question how memory and remembering is possible when all the digital storages fail or cannot be accessed, postulating a possible answer in form of recycling and reutilizing the digital archive.

РЕФЛЕКСИИ: Летни изложби и предизвикателства в София

Изложба на номинираните художници за Наградата за съвременно изкуство БАЗА представиха в Софийска градска художествена галерия. Тя е организирана от Института за съвременно изкуство – София и Фондация „Едмонд Демирджиян” съвместно с Фондация за гражданско общество, Ню Йорк и международна мрежа Награди за млади художници. Вълко Чобанов беше отличеният творец за тази година /на снимката/.

Лятото не е само време за почивка, но и за преосмисляне. Особено в сферата на изкуствата. И подготовка за нови събития от септември. В София, разбира се, културните събития продължават и през лятото, както вече писахме. И ако някои частни галерии преминават към свои летни колекции, то за Софийска градска художествена галерия лятната почивка като че ли не е валидна. Носители на наградата БАЗА досега са: Рада Букова (2008), Самуил Стоянов (2009), Антон Терзиев (2010), Викенти Комитски (2011), Леда Екимова (2012), Кирил Кузманов (2013), Зоран Георгиев (2014), Александра Чаушова (2015), Димитър Шопов (2016), Мартина Вачева (2017) и Мартин Пенев (2018).

Останалите номинирани тази година са: Александър Александров, Венета Андрова, Милена Георгиева, Невена Екимова, Мария Налбантова, Радостин Седевчев и Севда Семер. Изложбата продължава до 18 август. Международната мрежа Награди за млади художници (YVAA) е основана през 1990 г. и е една от най-устойчивите програми за културен обмен между САЩ и Централна и Източна Европа. Инициативата идва от Чехословакия, където Уенди Люерс, председателка на „Фондацията за гражданско общество”, заедно с няколко художници – дисиденти и с подкрепата на Вацлав Хавел, създават първата награда за млад художник с цел творчески престой в Ню Йорк. В днешно време в десет държави в Европа функционират подобни конкурси, менажирани от местни културни организации с нестопанска цел и поддържани финансово от International Studioand Curatorial Program (ISCP), Ню Йорк (до 2014 г.) и от Residency Unlimited (RU), Ню Йорк (от 2015 г.).

Откриването на изложбата на номинираните за наградата БАЗА в СГХГ беше при голям зрителски интерес

Наградата БАЗА в България е основана по инициатива на Мария Василева /в центъра на снимката/ и се ръководи от Института за съвременно изкуство – София и Фондация „Едмонд Демирджиян”. Конкурсът е всяка година. В него могат да участват художници до 35 години, които кандидатстват с портфолио. Жури с двегодишен мандат номинира между четири и осем участници. Изложбата на номинираните автори се провежда в СГХГ. Победителят се обявява по време на откриването. Наградата е двумесечно пребиваване на един художник от България в Ню Йорк. Носителите на Наградата БАЗА имат възможност да се представят със самостоятелна изложба в галерията на Института за съвременно изкуство – София. Членовете на журито на БАЗА за 2019 г. са: Ирина Баткова (куратор), Бошко Бошкович (програмен директор на Residency Unlimited, Ню Йорк), Десислава Димова (куратор), Карина Котова (куратор), Биляна Рубинова (художник и куратор) и Омар Лопес - Чахуд (куратор и артистичен директор на Untitled Art Fair, Маями). По време на откриването на изложбата се проведе пърформанс на Милена Георгиева от две части: „Песента за жената” и „Има нещо, за което трябва да поговорим”, 2018-2019.  

“Всевиждащото око” на Антон Стоянов в галерия “Структура”

Когато става дума за Мария Василева, искаме да споменем и нейната галерия „Структура”. За съжаление, напоследък около предната изложба в галерията се случиха неблагополучия, от които не е застрахован никой куратор и колекционер, занимаващ се с покойни художници. Защитени данни изтекоха от изключително важни държавни институции, какво остава за фалшификатори на картини. Ние вече писахме за това във „въпреки.com” и в ArtSofia. Но сега в тази галерия има нова изложба, която няма опасност да бъде фалшифицирана. Защото художникът е наш съвременник, при това не случаен. Впрочем, това е посоката – съвременно изкуство, която галерията следва най-пълноценно и неотстъпно. Изложбата е на Антон Стоянов и е под провокативното заглавие „Внимание! Обектът наблюдава”. Това разбира се, е свързано със самата същност на изложбата, но е и своеобразна реплика към станалото преди тази експозиция. Когато разглеждахме изложбата, в нея дойде група от няколко достолепни дами, които с интерес наблюдаваха творбите и отражението на себе си. Защото в него зрителят може да види и себе си до и във всевиждащото око. И това ни припомня максимата, че лоша реклама за каквото и да е няма. Но за съжаление, както отбелязахме по повод на предишната изложба, медиите се интересуваха предимно от скандала, а не от качествата на една експозиция или художник.

Творбите в изложбата на Антон Стоянов са направени специално за галерия „Структура”. Това е и първото самостоятелно представяне на художника в София. Показаните работи продължават серията, която Антон Стоянов започва през 2018 година след специализация в Glaser - Innung  (Гилдията на стъкларите) в Берлин. В тях използва стъкло, огледала и пигменти. Огледалните повърхности придават допълнително измерение на иначе плоските обекти, като включват в изображението и околната, постоянно променяща се среда. Със своите цветни рефлексии творбите също променят пространството, като го отразяват по различен начин през различните часове на деня. Калейдоскопичната визия се възприема в целия спектър от еуфорично празнично до шизофренично мрачно и апокалиптично. Нарочната прилика с планети още веднъж подчертава по - дълбокото послание – светът е обозрим, Космосът е безкраен, ние сме част от тях и всяко наше действие има значение.

В новите произведения авторът развива идеята си в посока на гледането и виждането – както в рамките на всекидневните практики, така и в планетарен мащаб. В центъра на експозицията зрителят попада между две огромни очи. Те напомнят наблюдателни камери, но и ни препращат към всевиждащото око  (окото на провидението), което стои далеч отвъд земните порядки. Смесването на един от най-актуалните проблеми на нашето време – наблюдаването, следенето, отнемането на личното пространство, с божествената промисъл, представляваща духовната истина и пробуждане, очертава рамките на проекта. В допълнение „камуфлажните” картини подсилват идеята за мимикрията на времето и нашите собствени колебания, вътрешни „премествания”, несигурности и тревоги. Названието на изложбата е и предупреждение – ние гледаме творбите, но и те ни гледат. Това е процес на взаимност, който излиза извън насладата и открива разговор за наблюдението и самонаблюдението, за възторга от виждането и разтърсващата сила на гледането, за погледа от нас и към нас, и неговата необятна власт, пише в анотацията за изложбата.

Антон Стоянов (роден през 1978 в София) живее и работи в Берлин. Следва в Националната художествена академия, София, в Университета за приложни изкуства, Виена, и завършва образованието си в Университета по изкуствата, Берлин, през 2007. Работи в областта на живописта, обекта, релефа, инсталацията и дизайна. Експериментира с различни материали и техники, като така предизвиква границите на традиционните видове изкуства и особено „класическото” разбиране за живописта. Участва в редица изложби в Берлин, Виена, Хамбург, Кьолн, Пловдив. През 2019 (21.06-18.07) представя FORNOTECA в рамките на проекта FLUCA – Австрийски културен павилион в Пловдив с куратор Борис Костадинов. Работи с галерия xavıerlaboulbenne, Берлин.

А в Националната галерия – Двореца може да бъде видяна до 29 септември още една много интересна изложба на избрани творби на Румен Жеков. Изложбата на художника в Националната галерия е четвърта поред от започналата през 2018 програма под надслов „Българските художници днес“ тогава при директор Слава Иванова. „Избрано“ обхваща широк диапазон от творчеството на автора и представя едни от най-значимите му произведения. Селектирани  са творби от Националната галерия, ГХГ Пловдив и частни колекции. Изложбата е подредена на базата на акценти и контрапункти, и разкрива различни посоки в неговото развитие - от дипломната работа на художника „Дворът на психиатричната клиника на бул. Руски 6“ (1988), през серии и цикли като „Нощни интериори“ (1988-1989) и „Белези и сенки“ (2005-2006)до последната му серия „Безсъници“ (2017-2018), една част от която той показва за първи път в София. Румен Жеков търси вдъхновение от скритото послание на линиите и символите. В картините му откриваме  голяма доза сетивност и осмислена и знаково изведена образност. Живописта му е премерена и овладяна като пластичен език. Картините му комуникират с езика на сенките, отраженията и сложните лабиринти на неговата фантазия. Художникът много бързо преминава през фигуративното в най-ранните си работи  - „Нощта е безкрайна“ (1988), „Порта в нощта“ (1989), за да достигне до деликатни и изведени до знаковост  композиции като „Фрагменти“ (2004), „Безсъници - зора“ (2017), в които минимализмът е водещ артистичен избор, пише в анотацията за изложбата. Така че в София има експозиции и събития, които оживяват града в летните месеци. ≈

Global Business Aviation Coalition Showcases Viability of Sustainable Alternative Jet Fuels

Farnborough (UK), 18 May 2019. Today at TAG Farnborough Airport, the global coalition of business aviation organizations behind the sustainable alternative jet fuel initiative joined forces to take the next important step in its journey to a lower carbon future.

Since the launch of the sustainable alternative jet fuel (SAJF) initiative and Business Aviation Guide to the Use of Sustainable Alternative Fuel in 2018, the SAJF story and the Business Aviation Commitment to Climate Change have gained global momentum.

Participating in the EU Sustainable Energy Week under the theme “Shaping the EU’s Energy Future,” global business aviation and community leaders discussed the path forward for the continued adoption of SAJF in Europe during a day-long, multifaceted event.

Aircraft from major manufacturers, such as Bombardier, Gulfstream, Cirrus, Embraer, Piaggio, Dassault and Textron Aviation, fuelled up on SAJF at airports across Europe and the United States–including TAG Farnborough Airport, England (EGLF); Caen – Carpiquet Airport, France (LFRK); Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Sweden (ESSA); and Republic Airport, Farmingdale, NY (KFRG) at Sheltair–for demonstration flights showcasing the viability of sustainable alternative jet fuel.

SAJF has been made available at these airports specifically for aircraft manufacturers and operators to collectively fly-in to Europe’s annual meeting place for the business aviation community, EBACE in Geneva.

Welcoming guests at the event, EBAA Secretary-General, Athar Husain Khan, said: “Sustainable Alternative Jet Fuels are key in attaining our goals laid out in the Business Aviation Commitment on Climate Change. We stand ready and extend our hand to regulators, operators and media alike to help advise, inform and educate on the use of Sustainable Alternative Jet Fuel (SAJF), our commitment on Climate Change and our ongoing efforts to reduce our environmental impact.”

CEO of TAG Farnborough Airport, Brandon O’Reilly stated in his opening address: “As the first business aviation airport in the world to achieve certified carbon neutrality, we are proud to be hosting and participating in today’s event and welcome this initiative to provide Sustainable Alternative Jet Fuels. Along with our customers, we are eager to see the efficient and cost-effective availability of this fuel.” 

Also speaking at the event, EUROCONTROL Director General, Eamonn Brennan, added: “Sustainable Aviation Fuels and airframe and engine technology improvements are key to aviation minimising its carbon footprint. Business aviation aircraft have no alternative to liquid fuel in the near and mid-term and in this regard SAF is the most promising near-term option. Already thousands of commercial flights have demonstrated that these fuels can work. The problem is, the cost of production is still too high for aircraft operators. The challenge of industry and above all governments is to establish clear long-term policy frameworks and find a way of funding transition costs of what is essentially a huge technological change in order to achieve the ICAO 2050 Vision for Sustainable Aviation Fuels.”

The event clearly demonstrated three key points:

SAJF is safe and does not impact aircraft performance.

SAJF offers great impact and benefits to the airport and the community, including reduced particulate matter.

SAJF reflects the commitment by business aviation to aircraft carbon reduction.

Kurt Edwards, IBAC Director General remarked, “Business aviation continues to show the world its commitment to mitigating its contribution to climate change.  Fuelling the Future at Farnborough demonstrates the industry’s strong interest in sustainable aviation fuel, an innovative technology available now.  The initiative supports the 2009 Business Aviation Commitment on Climate Change and similar global efforts with other industry sectors and the International Civil Aviation Organization.  Use of sustainable aviation fuels is a critical measure to address the global challenge of climate change.”

Ed Bolen, NBAA President, and CEO commented: “The business aviation community has a long and successful history of innovation when it comes to reducing the industry’s carbon footprint. Sustainable Alternative Jet Fuels are a key element in this important effort, in Europe and beyond.

“With shared urgency, virtually all sectors across civil aviation are identifying opportunities and creating new paths to lowering emissions, be it through developing more efficient products or adopting new ways of operating. Business aviation shares this same commitment, and SAJF, represents an available and tangible solution that can make a measurable and impactful difference right now,” added David Coleal, Chairman, GAMA Environment Committee and President, Bombardier Aviation.

 “The Sustainable Alternative Jet Fuel (SAJF) message is being spread far and wide thanks to an ever-growing coalition of aviation business stakeholders. The National Air Transportation Association (NATA) and its members are proud to support efforts that demonstrate SAJF in practice and the commitment of our industry to corporate and environmental responsibility. Initiatives showcasing SAJF, like the launch of The Business Aviation Guide to the Use of Sustainable Alternative Jet Fuel, the Business Jets Fuel Green event in Van Nuys, the Fuelling the Future event in Farnborough, and the activities in Geneva at EBACE are greatly moving the needle for education and awareness. The focus now needs to be on making it easier for companies to produce SAJF to meet the demands of business jet owners. We urge our FBO and operator members worldwide to contact fuel suppliers and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to answer any questions they may have regarding SAJF and to encourage its widespread use,” said Gary Dempsey, NATA President.

Guy Sawyer, Senior Director of Global Physical Operations in Aviation for World Fuel Services said “We were an early supporter of alternative fuel technology, and now an industry leader in promotion and distribution of SAJF. We invested early and continue our full support on SAJF to reduce CO2 emissions. While SAJF is new to business aviation, we all have a responsibility to help drive its acceptance and utilization.  We wholeheartedly encourage the use of SAJF and believe the TAG Farnborough event will help its profile for the benefit of the industry and the world by reducing CO2 emissions and utilizing a sustainable fuel product.”

Initiatives like this give operators direct exposure to sustainable aviation fuel, helping us to overcome obstacles to its adoption. At Air BP we believe it is important to keep working with multiple suppliers, customers, and partners, and using expertise from across BP’s global organisation, to support the commercialisation of sustainable aviation fuel” said Irene Lores, Global sales and marketing director, general aviation, Air BP.

Manager of Alternative Fuels for Avfuel Corporation, Keith Sawyer said, “Avfuel is proud to support the SAJF initiative with supply at FRG for more sustainable transatlantic flights to EBACE. Our team is committed to helping the industry achieve its goals of carbon neutrality—along with coalition organization leaders—and is pleased with the demonstrative progress that’s been made this year to prove SAJF can become a viable option for the industry. To further this initiative, the Avfuel team’s working to secure greater SAJF supply to champion one of the largest hurdles yet to the initiative—availability—along with securing operator commitments for SAJF to encourage production through greater demand.”

 About the Business Aviation Commitment to Climate Change: Celebrating its 10-year anniversary this year, the Business Aviation Commitment on Climate Change lays out the goals our industry has set toward securing a carbon-neutral future.

The industry’s commitment to emissions reduction centres around three goals:

A 2% improvement in fuel efficiency per year from 2010 until 2020;

Carbon-neutral growth from 2020 onward;

A 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050, relative to 2005.
