Time Travel Question 48: Early Modernish and Earlier 3

These Questions are the result of suggestions a the previous iteration.This category may include suggestions made too late to fall into the correct earlier time grouping. In some cases a culture lasted a really long time and I grouped them by whether it was likely the later or earlier grouping made the most sense with the information I had. (Invention ofs tend to fall in an earlier grouping if it's still open. Ones that imply height of or just before something tend to get grouped later, but not always. Sometimes I'll split two different things from the same culture into different polls because they involve separate research goals or the like).

As many as 10,000 slaves followed a clandestine Southern Underground Railroad to Mexico. —To date, many Black Mexicans from the Texas area retrace a portion of the same route their African American ancestors followed in 1850 when they escaped slavery. —Descendants of slaves who escaped across the southern border observe Texas’s emancipation holiday with their own unique traditions in the village of Nacimiento. —Slave hunters would patrol the southern border for escapees, led by the Texas Rangers but the Mexican army would be there waiting for them (the slave hunters) to turn them away.

I really do love the fresh take on the dead wife aspect in scavengers reign like. She didn't die in some terrible accident or at the hands of an evil third party, she died because of you. Because of your ambition and carelessness and because you didn't prioritize her enough to even look for her as the ship was going down. You will carry this guilt for the rest of your life. Some people in the fandom: Arya was too far gone when she premeditated a murder in Arya X of clash of kings, that's when she crossed the line.

The premeditated murder in question: is the killing of a guard so that they could escape being essentially slaves and prisoners of war which (as they later confirmed by Jaime) saved all of their lives.

"I'm heading out to watch the game with the guys," I called to my girlfriend as I left the bedroom and headed down the hall, but I suddenly had to stop, my way blocked by my girlfriend's sister, Emily.

"Where do you think you're going?" She asked me.

I felt my girlfriend moving up behind me, and I stood mesmerized, my heart falling, knowing I was in real trouble.

"I didn't know you were coming," I said as my girlfriend, Katrina, pulled my hands behind my back and slowly handcuffed me, rendering me helpless.

"Yes," Emily said. "My sister invited me over for a nice weekend of punishing you. Apparently you had a road rage incident earlier this week and she's been waiting to punish you for it."

I blushed. "Yes, Miss Emily."

My girlfriend tightened the handcuffs one more click. "You'll be wearing those for the rest of the weekend. We'll just tear off your shirt and strip you naked ourselves."

As my shirt was torn off and my girlfriend's sister lowered and removed my pants, leaving me naked before the women, I reflected on how Katrina had talked me into an FLR, and how, once I'd surrendered to her, she vowed one day I would regret it.

That day had come, and now, there was nothing I could do. I'd been caught, sentenced, and was now going to be punished.

Gah, the way the characters in white cat legend think that pushing those they love away will protect them. Qiu Qingzhi with Li Bing. Li Bing with Chen Shi and the rest. Alibaba with Vice President Shangguan. "It's for your own good" they say and they truly believe it. Even Chen Jiu with Chen Shi ("don't come to Shendu").

The way that the only way to break this cycle was for those being pushed away to push back. How, when even Chen Shi (the most openly caring of all the characters) had given up, his previous actions meant that Wang Qi and co. were still willing to keep trying. They were the four who had been deliberately coasting along prior to the start of the series, doing only enough in their jobs to not entirely lose their paychecks (and not even doing a particularly good job at that). And yet, because of the impact Li Bing and Chen Shi had had on them, *they're* the ones to say "stop pushing us away" and go out of their way to bridge the gap to Li Bing. Li Bing, who time and again, pushed others away, certain he had to keep others out of danger, and yet also terrified of what letting people close would do to *him* if they discovered him as he "truly" was.

It wasn't too late for Li Bing. He had people in his corner willing to push past his attempts to keep them out and he was (eventually) able to accept them. Accept that they accepted him.

Not everyone is so lucky.

I've seen quite a few people in the Vinland Saga fandom go "poor Einar" because of the whole Arnheid thing and umm not to spoil anybody's fun but like he's not the one suffering here... Not saying that Einar isn't being impacted emotionally, but his pain should not be in the spotlight??

Arnheid is held as a slave at Ketil's farm and has to sexually please her master (which is obviously not consensual, but for some reason that gets ignored), she's lost her son and husband, she gets treated like shit by Ketil's wife, she gets sexually harassed by the retainers and manga spoilers ahead she is literally beaten to death by Ketil for being there for her husband when he was dying... but yeah poor Einar 😕
