Celebrating the FSA anniversary by drawing 4 different Fours from different Links Meet AUs. I’m a day late because I didn’t know that March 18 was the anniversary. I was planning on drawing these guys for a while, several months ago, I just forgot to. Fun fact, the day before the 18th, quite literally the day before, the 17th, I thought, “I should finally draw these guys the day before the FSA anniversary so I can post them on time.” Like. Wtf. It was not a perfectly written article but it was about the need to acknowledge the difference between  ‘다르다’ (da-reu-da/different) and ‘틀리다’ (teul-li-da/wrong) . What this article lacked was the criterion to how to set these differences and simply asked the readers to address the difference between the two words. In 2017, EOC started to discuss about ‘Political Correctness’ (Part I & II) http://23han.tumblr.com/post/155245021417/how-political-correct-should-we-be-part-i http://23han.tumblr.com/post/155874493537/political-correctness-part-ii . These two articles about Political Correctness do not merely try to explain that you need Political Correctness. It was written to set a foundation to more discussions we wish to develop. The word Political Correctness provokes us into thinking about how we should interpret ‘political’ and whether ‘correct’ defines ‘appropriate’ or ‘accurate’. Exploring ‘what is being politically correct’ and setting a certain criterion for Political Correctness should not be decided hastily.

There are many explanations on Political Correctness when searched on portal sites. If we can say that something is political correct, then we should also be able to state what is politically incorrect. It should not merely be a matter of accuracy but ask beyond it and demand for justice. However if ‘Correctness’ is understood as ‘accurate’, then under this premise it means that Political Correctness aims to emend the wrong understanding that were seemingly ‘inaccurate’ – which ultimately determines Political Correctness as means to ‘correcting’ a thought. When is it that we can apply this to our society? EOC aims to continuously remark upon this issue to untangle its complexities. A group of people who need protection or a group of people irrationally exempt from mainstream society could be such examples. Let us assume that in order for these people to be respected equally, there needs to be a certain word to define them. Let us think into who uses the specific words to mention these people. Initially, we can see that the person directly involved would use it. These people should be able to decide what words are used. However, their efforts cannot change the words already used by the majority of people. At this point, we can see that there are a set of people who would try to come of aid to their needs. For instance, for those who are discriminated just because they have different skin color, many people have come together to fight for those without any power. The word ‘African American’ exemplifies such an endeavor.

Such efforts are neither always appropriate nor accurate. In Korea, people who are mentally or physically challenged are called ‘jang ae in’ (disabled person), and a synonym ‘jang ae oo’ (disabled friend) is also used. ‘oo’ meaning ‘friend’(友 – Chinese character) was adapted for more intimacy with these people and consider them as friends. This was made with good intentions and did not aim to attack or victimize anyone. The question that arose was, “Why is it that these ‘challenged people’ should be subject of ‘friendship’?”. Though the word itself is amicable, the disabled people found it difficult to accept themselves becoming a ‘friendly figure’ just because they are disabled. It also implied disabled people are ‘lesser’ people in a society who should be helped where the ‘superior’ people decided who is ‘normal’ and ‘abnormal’. In order for someone to be a ‘oo’ (a friend), they should bond by spending time together, and should not simply be called ‘friend’ just because you want to be friendly. Disabled people would rather think that such an effort to be ‘friendly’ is selfish and would rather prefer the initial word ‘jang ae in’ than ‘jang ae oo’. A word with an objective meaning, defining exactly who they are, could be less offensive and derogative.

Of course, in order to respect others, recalling Political Correctness is an act of politeness. However, the freedom that we speak of is as J. S. Mill stated, as long as such words do not harm another person’s freedom then it should be accepted. Rather, excessive self-censorship could lead to negative decisions that purify too many words that may be actually needed, contributing to a diluted result. If such manner becomes prevalent, our society will be no different to a Big Brother society. Freedom of expression is in fact the foundation of all civil liberties. If the fundamental freedoms are not honored then is it truly being politically correct?

If we aim for such censorship, it could forge reprehensible results for many people. It could mean that under the umbrella of Political Correctness, a political incorrect result could be fabricated. In South Korea, people who evoke disagreeable words for Political Correctness are called “PC Choong” (Computer-PC roaches). When we look into the meaning of this suffix, we can notice that it is not courteous or solicitous. In English-speaking countries, the word “Social Justice Warrior” is used and this word also seems to be a word of disdain. These so-called people may personally believe that they do what they do for justice. However, the word ‘justice’ has a more weighty substance than people can imagine. Such a word that is as sharp as the blade of a knife, should be thought over with great contemplation and agony that is beyond ordinary thought. If we believe that we all can be Batman, the pain that Batman had to suffer in darkness would become meaningless. Faith and belief will undoubtedly lead us down a better path. However, they should never be blindly wielded.
