Song Review: Jack White - “A Tip from You to Me” (SNL)
Jack White’s musical-guest spot on “Saturday Night Live” included “A Tip from You to Me.”
The track from 2022’s Entering Heaven Alive translated fluidly to the stage as the man introduced by Woody Harrelson as “incomparable” lived up to the description.
A strong band never hurts. And White has assembled a strong band.
As on album, “Tip” on stage is a hybrid of rock ‘n’ roll rhythm, gospel piano and folksy guitar that ties together many of White’s penchants in a charming, three-minute package.
Grade card: Jack White - “A Tip from You to Me” (SNL) - B+

Album Review: Jack White - Entering Heaven Alive
From the sounds of it, Entering Heaven Alive belongs in bins with records by English musicians who came of age in the 1960s and ’70s, what with its Kinky camp, Beatlesque arrangements and healthy doses of III-era Led Zeppelin.
But Heaven is the brainchild of an American who made his name - Jack White - in Detroit. And despite its obvious inspiration/thievery, it’s a dynamic release from a dude whose music can range from unlistenable to undeniable.
Only “I’ve Got You Surrounded (With My Love)” pulls away from the LP’s acoustic roots, putting an unnecessary attempt at muted funk amid the singer-songwriter atmosphere that permeates White’s second album of 2022.
Intentionally or not, White brings a whole lotta Robert Plant to the mic whether he’s taking advice on the album-opening “Tip from You to Me” - dig the John Paul Jonesian piano - or pleading for absolution on “Please God, Don’t Tell Anyone,” which rips the chord progression of “A Hard Rain’s A-gonna Fall.”
Lyrically, White relies on his own devices, resulting in delicious wordplay such as this from “A Madman in Manhattan:”
There’s a madman from Manhattan/here with a man’s hat and a floor mat made of satin
Despite this sliver of White’s own personality, Entering Heaven Alive is an album full of déjà vu; it’s new, but feels like you’ve heard it before.

REVIEW: Entering Heaven Alive by Jack White
Tumblr media
On the heels of his wedding with Olivia Jean, Jack White is on fire with a double album release in 2022. While Fear of the Dawn electrified us with experimental garage blues back in April, summer brings a folkier Jack White with softer moody tunes about love, misunderstood coffee, and “a madman from Manhattan [...] with a man's hat and a floor mat made of satin.” Sometimes sentimental, sometimes uplifting, White’s creativity is on high and his heart seems wider and wiser. Most tracks on Entering Heaven Alive are quieter and acoustic, like the beautifully simple fingerpicking tune “Love is Selfish” showcasing White’s contemplative lyricism with a vulnerability we don’t see from him often. Another highlight is “A Madman from Manhattan” featuring a sexy riff and vividly whimsical lyrics that just roll off the tongue. “I’ve Got You Surrounded (With My Love)” is a moody tune including rolling drums, and a gorgeous harmony of soft piano & manic guitar that showcases exactly why I love Jack: he can combine these seemingly incompatible sounds to create soundscapes of familiar anxiety and warmth. It’s magical when artists can go to both extremes with such grace and vision. Overall, this year has been remarkable for Jack and while Entering Heaven Alive doesn’t have the same bite as it’s 2022 predecessor Fear of the Dawn, I am so glad he decided to release these more low-key tracks as a nice summer treat. Congrats on an exciting year Jack!
