This is the story of Milanese fashion, in Italy and internationally, in the words and images of one of its great protagonists, Elvira Leonardi Bouyeure. Known as Biki, and recognized as the "dressmaker" to Maria Callas, Biki would remain close to fashion her entire life. An irreplaceable personality and talent, Biki (Milan, 1906 - 1999) was engaged in all the key points in the evolution of Italian fashion during the twentieth century. From the Fascist era of the midthirties, through the eighties, gaining international recognition with Made in Italy. This volume is based on the analysis of material from Biki's private archive. Statements, notes, drawings, letters, photographs and newspaper clippings have been organized and edited by Simona Segre Reinach, with the help of rare photographs by Giovanni Gastel, the refined graphics of Francesco Dondina, the meticulous supervision of Jacques Reynaud, nephew of Biki and the historical contextualization of Emanuela Scarpellini, professor of Contemporary History at the University of Milan

Elvira Leonardi Bouyeure, with the artist name Biki, was one of the most noted names of the ‘50s fashion scene in Milan. Granddaughter of Giacomo Puccini, the majority of her affluential clients were tightly connected to the famous La Scala opera theatre and the Milan’s culture circles. Style-wise, in her designs we can notice the elegant Milan lines meeting the luxurious haute couture influence of the Alta Moda of Roma school, coming together in a mesmerizing symbiosis.

Maria Callas was her most famous client. The Milanese seamstress carries out an important transformation of the singer's style: "She weighed almost a hundred kilos, she was dressed like a “sciuretta” (Milanese slang for a mid-class lady). In one season she became a diva. "The first time Biki saw Maria, she was enlightened by how much beauty to hear her sing, how disappointed she was in her appearance, so much so that she was able to tell her that she would never look after her. IN 1953 after six months, Maria loses thirty pounds and is ready. Suddenly Biki's criticisms are put aside and she devotes all her knowledge to it.

Biki will design dresses, jackets and coats with shapes and fabrics that enhance the qualities of that body and hide its defects. The boat necklines will disguise the powerful décolleté, the long gloves will be contemplated by structured dresses, pleats and draperies will be designed specifically to lighten the figure - beloved by Biki herself - will carry it upwards and give it an even more elegant air, a string of pearls if it is undecided on the accessory it will be the perfect solution, the shawl to accompany it in delicate and distinct movements. Each garment of the singer is numbered and detailed notes explain how to wear each outfit and with which accessories.

Thus the Image that Maria deserved is born, in tune with her majestic voice, to the point of making her a real Diva ... in all aspects of her personality and her life.

Il film Maria By Callas diretto da Tom Wolf arriva al cinema dal 16 al 18 Aprile. Il titolo è un suggerimento alquanto esplicito al dualismo che conviveva nell’artista e icona Maria Callas: essere Maria o essere Callas. Una condizione che si capisce a pieno se ricordiamo alcune parole che essa stessa pronunciò “Ci sono due persona in me. Mi piacerebbe essere Maria, ma devo vivere all’altezza delle aspettative della Callas”.

Questa pellicola è il risultato di una lunga ricerca che ha portato il regista in giro per il mondo per più di tre anni: un ritratto intimo tra fotografie, super8, registrazioni private, lettere e filmati dietro le quinte che mostrano le diverse sfumature della Divina.

Maria Callas amava esibirsi in pubblico ma molto meno parlare di sé e così dalle copertine dei rotocalchi ne esce una figura molto spesso sfalsata, nota per le sue scelte sentimentali e per un meticoloso lavoro estetico fatto su se stessa che le permise di diventare un “levriero”.

Come spiega Tom Wolf “ basta guardare i filmati per capire come al di là del belcanto, la comunicazione visiva attraverso lo stile sia parte del mito”. Capelli raccolti in uno chignon, una netta riga di eyeliner nero e un look che esaltava il suo passo felpato. Elvira Bouyeure Leonardi, detta Biki, creò l’immagine e lo stile della Callas come Anna Wintour curò quella di Michelle Obama. La Divina girava il mondo con un quadernetto con gli appunti di stile: blu marino in città, pellicce per l’inverno, sciarpe come dettaglio in drappeggio, abitini bon ton e bellissimi gioielli di turchese, smeraldo e perle. Non mancavano cappellini, ventagli piumati ed elegantissimi guanti. Tra le firme preferite Christian Dior, Lanvin e il suo ammiratore Yves Saint Laurent.

Completamente diversa la figura di Maria, amica di Pasolini e amante di Onassis: molto spesso struccata, coi capelli sciolti, senza scarpe, in jeans e polo.

Amata per la voce e ammirata per lo stile, nella pellicola Maria By Callas troviamo le immagini inedite di Maria Callas, di un’icona alla ricerca dell’amore e della semplicità, di una donna che va oltre l’artista. Nella gallery alcuni documenti che ritroviamo nel film di Tom Wolf.

The volume is entitled "The Portraits of Elegance - Teatro alla Scala" and was actually a supplement given out in December 2004 with Vogue Italia to celebrate the opera house reopening. The volume features several images from the Farabola archives – all taken between the early 50s and the early 70s – and portray ladies wearing glamorous evening gowns and furs at various season openings. La Scala reopened after Second World War on 11th May 1946 with a concert directed by Arturo Toscanini. At the time Paris was celebrating the rebirth of fashion with Dior, while the Milanese tailoring houses were slowly starting again to produce their own designs.In 1951 the season at La Scala was opened for the first time on 7th December rather than on the 26th as usual.  The new opening coincided with the arrival of a singer destined to become very famous, Maria Callas.           From the 50s on crowds started gathering in front of the theatre to admire the celebrities and aristocrats going to the season opening performances. Wearing glamorous dresses became the norm and while Parisian designers were still favoured by many women, the openings at La Scala also helped new designers and tailoring houses emerging, among them also Jole Veneziani, Gigliola Curiel, Pirovano, Livoli, Tizzoni, Farioli, Federico Forquet, Germana Marucelli and Mila Schön.  In 1953 Maria Callas appeared visibly thinner than on her debut, gossips spread in the theatre about the diet she had followed, but among the “authors” of her transformation into a sophisticated woman there was also an Italian designer, Elvira Leonardi Bouyeure, better known as Biki, who dressed the singer for the next 25 years. Biki would send Maria Callas dresses and accessories accompanied by little numbers and booklets that showed her how to match the various garments and items.  (text by Anna Battista)
