My Problem With Small Craft Distilleries That Make Bourbon
Today I did a tasting at the Wigle Whiskey distillery in Pittsburgh, PA. They make rye and bourbon. The rye was pretty good and I enjoyed it. But the bourbon was like, fine. It was decent bourbon but it just didn't really stand out. They had a bourbon made from red corn which is rare, but it was good. Not really the rich bold flavors I seek when it comes to bourbon Their straight bourbon had quite a bit of burn to it and seemed unrefined.
The waiter who served us asked us what our favorite was, and of course I picked the single cask rye. He asked us for other opinions, and I had to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth about small craft distilleries that make bourbon. Often times they make a bourbon that is mediocre. They don't realize that their main competition are Kentucky distillers who have been making bourbon for over 200 years. That would be fine if the price is right, but a bottle of Wigle Whiskey straight bourbon costs $55 a bottle. I explained that I can get a lot of great Kentucky bourbons for that price or less that just blows Wigle out of the water. Think of all common brands out there that you can find on the shelf of every liquor store, bourbons like Woodford Reserve, 1792, Buffalo Trace, Elijah Craig, Willet, Lexington, Makers 46, all the specialty batches made by Jim Beam and Wild Turkey, even common brands like Knob Creek, Makers Mark, and Bulleit. I'd even argue a bargain brand like Evan Williams Black Label is probably better. The waiter disagreed and said their bourbon was just as good as any Kentucky bourbon. I think he's delusional.

Back in 2023, Firestone Walker Brewing releases their latest edition of Parabola, barrel-aged imperial stout.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Press Release
Paso Robles, CA: Firestone Walker’s iconic Parabola imperial stout is back with a new vintage that was aged in a rare blend of spirits barrels from Blanton’s and W.L Weller distilleries. This release is also accompanied by the next edition of a small-batch spinoff called “Paraboloid,” which was aged in 20-year-old Elijah Craig bourbon barrels.
The 2023 vintage of Parabola is rolling out to all Firestone Walker markets in limited 12-ounce bottle and draft formats. Meanwhile, 12-ounce bottles of Paraboloid are available for a limited time at all Firestone Walker locations and online at FirestoneBeer.com.
Parabola is always a beast of a beer, with intense flavors of black cherry, dark chocolate, vanilla and roast coffee—yet each annual release also bears its own subtle imprint, gained from aging in a unique mix of barrels from one year to the next.
True to form, the 2023 edition was aged for a year in an equal combination of eight-year-old Blanton’s bourbon and 12-year-old W.L. Weller wheated whiskey barrels. The wheated whiskey barrels accentuated Parabola’s signature richness with fine notes of cereal grain, while the bourbon barrels imparted their classic notes of toasted coconut and cocoa nibs.
“These barrels are pretty rare, and we’ve never used them to this extent in Parabola,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “I’ve been a longtime fan of Blanton’s, and I’m a more recent fan of Weller, and together they add a flavorful new twist on the story of Parabola.”
Origin Story
The origins of Parabola date back to 2005, when it was created as a component for Firestone Walker’s first barrel-aged Anniversary Ale, which was called Ten. When this inaugural Anniversary Ale was released the following year, it became an immediate sensation and helped spark the coming surge in barrel-aged craft beers.
Along the way, Parabola gained a cult reputation of its own, finally meriting its own stand-alone release in 2010. Ever since, Parabola has returned each spring as a small-batch Firestone Walker staple. Today, Parabola maintains a perfect 100-point rating on Beer Advocate.
Paraboloid: Aged in 20-Year Elijah Craig Barrels
Parabola also achieves new heights in the limited small-batch spinoff known as Paraboloid.
The story of this beer began when it was aged in a special selection of premium 20-year-old Elijah Craig bourbon barrels. These barrels complemented Parabola’s flavors with mellow hints of oak, fudge and chocolate brownie.
“The rarity of these barrels speaks for itself, we were grateful to secure them,” Brynildson said. “They’re as old as the Parabola recipe itself. We’ve used Elijah Craig barrels in our barrel-aging program for a long time. Their barrels are super consistent and I’m a massive fan of their bourbons—but I’d never seen a 20-year-old Elijah Craig barrel until now.”
Additionally, the beer was aged for a full 18 months prior to blending and bottling, cultivating an ultra-smooth mouthfeel for this prodigiously flavorful stout.

Liga Privada #9
Wondering about the history, construction and taste of the Drew Estate Liga Privada number 9?  You’re in the right place, and watch til the end for a special treat.
Ah, Abby, you're in for a treat today. I see you bought the Drew Estate Liga Privada number 9, a cigar that's as rich in flavor as it is in history.
I've heard you mention Drew Estates before, Andrew. What's the deal with them? Why do you like their cigars so much?
Well, Abby, Drew Estate is like the Willy Wonka of the cigar world. They started out in the '90s in New York City, not with a chocolate factory, but with a dream to shake up the traditional cigar industry. Jonathan Drew and Marvin Samel, the founders, were a couple of kooky guys who had a vision for unique blends and an artistic approach to cigar making.
The Liga Privada line, which means "private blend" in Spanish, was originally crafted just for their workers. But it was too good to keep secret, so they let the smoke out of the bag, and here we are!
I love a good origin story. So what about this particular stick makes it stand out from the rest?
It's all about the construction. The Liga Privada number 9 is like a supergroup of tobacco leaves, each bringing its own flair to the band. A cigar has 3 distinct parts, a filler, the binder, and the wrapper, which is the outer leaf.
The filler is a blend of seven different tobaccos from Honduras and Nicaragua, giving it a complexity that's harder to find than a sober thought at Mardi Gras. The binder is a Brazilian Mata Fina, which is like the bass player—often overlooked but essential to the harmony. And the wrapper, oh boy, it's a dark, oily Connecticut Broadleaf that's as smooth as jazz on a Sunday morning.
Sounds like a masterpiece. But what about the flavors? What should I be looking out for?
Strap in, because this cigar is a three-act play on your palate. In the first third, expect a bold entrance of earthy tones and a bit of chocolate—like a bear hug from Mother Nature herself. You'll also get hints of pepper that'll tickle your nose like a feather.
I'm ready for that bear hug.
As you hit the second third, the plot thickens. The spice recedes, and in comes a creamy coffee taste, paired with some nuttiness—it's like a breakfast of champions if your breakfast is a cigar. And don't be surprised if you catch some whispers of leather like you're sneaking into a library full of ancient books.
A breakfast for champions, indeed. And the final act?
The final third is where it all comes together. The flavors intensify, and there's a sweetness that emerges like caramel drizzled over a woodsy campfire. It's a grand finale that'll leave you applauding for an encore.
Has this cigar won any awards or accolades?
It's not just any stick; it's been crowned as the "Hottest Cigar in America" by the big shots at Cigar Aficionado. That's like winning an Oscar in the cigar world!
But wait, there's more. This Nicaraguan beauty didn't just stop at one title. It's been racking up 90+ ratings left and right from Cigar Aficionado, which just goes to show how top-notch it really is. It landed in the Top twenty-five honors back in 2015, sitting pretty at number 10 overall.
I can’t wait to light up.  What kind of drink would you recommend with this:
Well, if you’re going to order an alcoholic drink, I’d consider a bourbon with a bit of age to it, like the Elijah Craig Small Batch. The sweet caramel and vanilla notes from the bourbon will complement the Liga Privada number 9's chocolatey undertones, while the spice from the bourbon's rye content will echo the cigar's own spicy kick. It's a duo that brings out the best in each other, especially during the cigar's intense final third.
Another alcoholic option, a robust porter or stout beer would be an excellent choice. The roasted malt flavors and the creamy mouthfeel of a beer like Founders Porter will match the Liga Privada number 9's coffee notes and its velvety smoke. This pairing is perfect for those who enjoy a creamy and rich experience, with the beer's slight bitterness providing a nice counterpoint to the cigar's sweetness.
For a non-alcoholic pairing, I’d go with a classic espresso. The concentrated, dark flavors of espresso will not only stand up to the Liga Privada number 9's body but also highlight its espresso-like qualities. The natural oils and crema of the espresso can enhance the smoking experience, offering a palate-cleansing effect between puffs.
Remember, when pairing drinks with cigars, it's all about matching intensity and finding flavors that either complement or interestingly contrast with each other. Enjoy your Drew Estate Liga Privada number 9 with any of these beverages for a truly elevated smoking session
I can't wait to light this up. Thanks for the rundown, Andrew. You always know how to set the stage for a great smoke.
To good friends and great cigars, Abby. Let's fire these up and put some smoke in the air. And enjoy this great lounge and music.

Elijah Craig Small Batch Barrel Proof
This barrel proof bourbon clocks in at a whopping 66.7% alcohol, so I figured I should put my hardhat on. You might want to, too.
This 12-year old, non-chill filtered b518 batch is made from 75% corn, 13% rye and 12% malted barley. When you smell it (and do it gently so you don’t fry your nose) you’ll pick up vanilla, orange peel, oak, caramel, and burnt caramel.
The taste starts honeyed, then moves to caramel, then burnt caramel, with the oak and vanilla coming through as well.
I suggest letting it sit in your glass for about 15 minutes before you drink it, or add some water or ice. Here’s some great, big full-bodied no frills bourbon without breaking the bank!

May 12 - cont.
Bardstown is just 3-4 miles from the park. It is a pretty town, with nice shops, restaurants and old homes and buildings. It is considered the bourbon capital as it is surrounded by distilleries. We had a delicious hamburger and fries, definitely home and and build your own. It was so good that I didn’t get sick. Better than Shake Shack! Unfortunately it was so hot that it was hard to walk on the streets. From there we chose 2 distilleries to visit, but none of them provided tours of the facilities. The first, Heaven Hill, started in 1935 right after Prohibition was lifted. It is a huge place with a nice store and bar. We tried a “flight” 3 different types of bourbon produced by them. One tasted horrible, and another was too strong. The best one was Elijah Craig small batch. The next distillery was Lux Row but I was not as impressed as with the first one. Also the attendants were not as nice, maybe because it was the end of the day. I had enough with these 2 visits, I can’t imagine doing more. It seems they Kentucky Mamés huge amount of money from horses, bourbon and the Derby. We were told that 80,000 people work in activities related to the Derby. The countryside is beautiful, very green and the houses, at least what we saw, have big yards and in general are huge!

Here are my 2021 favorite Whiskey options you can find for every budget. You can’t go wrong with these. They’re reliable, won’t ever let you down mixing or neat. Gifts or not. You should be able to get these in most of the US or acquired from other areas easily if not. They should also be on shelves at normal msrp or lower.
Barrell Bourbon/Whiskey
Many options and variations but I love the Bourbon Batches most. Expect $80-$100 for regular releases, more for extra special things. Keep an eye out for the private selections done by stores with great private barrel reputations. Stock up because it’s inevitable consumers will catch on that the brand keeps getting major awards and big ratings. I love the no BS transparent presentation too.
Makers Mark
A classic. Very nice Wheated Bourbon doing things right for more than 50 years. Put it in an empty Van Winkle 10 bottle, no one will know the difference. Great price with legendary consistency.
Woodford Reserve
So solid, so consistent and good. Super job blending this. It doesn’t get the credit it deserves amoung whiskey geeks. Gift or an everyday drinker, it’s every versatile. One of my top go to’s at bars without many whiskeys or for a nice value. If you’re a fan of fruity, sweet, caramel profile this is it.
Elijah Craig
A long time favorite. My everyday drinker that can easily fool most whiskey snobs at costing twice the typical $30ish price.
Angels Envy Bourbon
Great for gifting, newer Whiskey people that want a more approachable sweater profile. Created by Lincoln Henderson, one of the greatest whiskey minds we’ve had.
Basil Hayden 80 Proof
Best Bourbon for the new Bourbon fan. At 80 proof it’s very friendly and smooth. I personally prefer this regular original version over the new or older versions. Don’t add water, ice or dilute in cocktails. Makes a nice gift for the non snob or pouring an 80 proof blind to one.
Old Forester 1920
Not a Bourbon fan secret any longer. Very solid great high proofer for all uses. Has become a store shelf favorite to so many.
Wild Turkey Rare Breed Bourbon and Rye
The WT brand rarely gets anything wrong. You’ll never go wrong with these higher proof bargains that should cost 2x.
Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit
Nice for gifting and a very nice 101 proof hiding in plain sight.
Wild Turkey Russels Reserve 10 Year Bourbon
An awesome 10 year Bourbon for $30-$40, who can’t love that!
Wild Turkey Russels Reserve Single Barrel Rye
Best Single Barrel Rye you’ll ever find sitting on most store shelves waiting for smart people to buy them.
Four Roses Small Batch
90 proof. 6-7 year great everyday for everything at $30-$35. It will hold up to just about anything blind.
Four Roses Small Batch Select-see above, just add non-chill filtering and 7% more abv. Limited Distribution States are expanding.
Lot 40 Rye
If you find an old 2012 bottling grab it. Even the current release is solid for $35-$40. A rare Canadian Rye that’s 100% rye. This one is often in the store’s Canadian Whisky section rather than with the Rye’s.
Wilderness Trail-all types
The more I learn about them and their plans, I get more giddy over what’s coming. They have a million+++ dollar lab testing to make sure everything is as close to perfect as possible —it shows. Shane, Pat and staff are fanatics to make the best. Tomorrow’s Van Winkle and Willett. Get it until you can’t. In about half the states but expanding.
Hillrock-all types
Small true craft place on a New York farm growing grain and making Bourbon, Rye and Single Malt. Quality and tasty. Makes very nice gifts especially for those seeking something different with a rich look. Around $100.
Willett Noah’s Mill
Defies logic. The world is going crazy for Willett, especially Willett Family Estate (WFE) bottlings. January 2021 Willitt’s 100% own house made Whiskey turns 9 years old. Noah’s is currently pulled from Willett’s own best 7-8 year old barrels- soon to be a year older (written 12/20). When WFE rarely drops at retail or the Visitor Center, they are $200-$300 and sell out in minutes, not hours. At near barrel proof of 114.3 and around $45-$55 a bottle, how is Noah’s Mill on the shelves at all? Like I said, “Defies logic” and should. One of the best, most accessible bottles you can find today. Near barrel proof is a bonus. Half the cost of the similarly age/proof Bookers. Noah’s is allocated and if the label simply said “WILLETT Noah’s Mill” stores would be charging $300 per bottle for it. It won’t take much for this to be the next one you wished you bunkered a few cases of while you could.
Charbay R5 Whiskey
This one is the most interesting and unique whiskey you’ll ever have. US Regs require them to call this “Hop Flavored” but there is no flavoring added. Double distilled from bottle ready Bear Republic’s Racer 5 IPA. There is no way to accurately describe it. People tend to love it or not. Read up on it but having or gifting it will show your depth and appreciation for different styles of Whiskey. If you’re a hop head get it. Well stocked stores are likely to have it in distribution states. Ask a manager if they have it as I’ve tended to see it in many sections other than whiskey. Charbay’s one of the oldest craft distilleries in the US. Doing Brandy since 1983 and hop whiskey since 1999.
Larceny
A nice Wheated Bourbon from the legacy of the Weller brand and Stitzel Weller distillery. Made by Heavanhill in Louisville at the distillery built to replace the aging Stitzel Weller plant. Larceny was rebranded from Old Fitzgerald, this $25-$30 Bourbon is a great bargain. If your searching for Wheated Bourbon, Weller, and your good with 92 Proof, 6-9 years old, this is it. Every bit as good or better than Weller. Note-They have a full proof version that is much less likely to be on the shelf at MSRP.
Buffalo Trace
Good solid everyday Bourbon with the same mashbill and recipe of it’s sister brands at higher proof like the Stagg’s people are nuts for right now. One of the few Buffalo Trace made Bourbons that you can find and is good in taste and price.
Buffalo Trace Bourbon Cream
Another weird one to be one of my favorite Whiskies. Many people don’t know it exists. It’s got loads of uses for desert, in coffee, baking and just something different to the Bourbon lover. A great nightcap to decompress or to have “one more” especially before driving. Cheaper and much better than Bailey’s, a nice substitute to stick to Bourbon but a variation. Great gateway to the non-bourbon drinker also.
Old Forester 100 proof
Tasty $20-$25 choice with a good proof kick. Very solid and hiding in plain sight. Here’s the thing— truly authentic Whiskey aficionados don’t judge each other on the expensive over the top cult booze that they have/drink. They judge on their depth, choice and guts to drink something great that’s not cool or pretentious like this one. Well known to good bartenders as their secret weapon for an inexpensive Bourbon.
Rittenhouse Rye 100 Proof Bottled in Bond-
Everything I just said about Old Forester 100 is true for this one but in a Rye. If it were ever discontinued, American Bartenders would start crying. You won’t find a better $20-25 rye or whiskey. Super versatile.
