Because I’ve seen people getting confused, here’s a spoilery rundown of who’s who in the Jod Sections:
It’s important to note that their pre-Res names are clearly not the same as the ones we know them under, but we have to assume that the initials and relationships are broadly the same as the Lyctors’, because that is the smart editorial choice if you want to confuse your readers while still letting them figure things out if they pay attention.
Obviously there’s Ulysses and Titania, and then:
A - Augustine. He’s a scientist and he argues with M. One of these days I will reread the bit in HtN where John says something like “the man you used to be would hate you for saying that” and properly detangle it and then I will have to sit in an empty bathtub for an hour.
M - Mercy. Same as above, also the slight edge of hysterics. Their pre-Res relationship has me eating drywall, I’m more obsessed with them than ever.
C - Cassiopeia. I’ve seen people say it’s Cytherea, but we know that Cyth wasn’t first generation and was only born a couple of centuries post-Res. C’s closest relationship is with N, who is:
N - Nigella, because her closest relationship is with Cassiopeia. There’s also John saying, pre-DA minor, that while Nigella was prettiest you could never get a look in with Cassiopeia around, which matches up with their relationship in the Jod sections.
G - Gideon Original Flavour. I love knowing that he and John were friends growing up.
P - Pyrrha, who was a cop, which makes sense considering that she went on to run the intelligence network post-Res. What we learn about their relationship to John and each other in the Jod sections is delicious, actually; G1deon never knew who to pick between John and Pyrrha, Pyrrha was only there because of G1deon, good stuff. Also, Pyrrha apparently knows G1deon’s pre-Res name, which???? cannot wait to find out how (although I have ideas).
“the nun”/”M’s nun” - Cristabel, because her closest tie is to M, and everything we know about cav!Cristabel is about how devoted she is to God, Augustine calls her a fanatic, and “the nun” killing herself so John figures out souls is eerily similar to the suicide pact Cristabel seems to have had going on with cav!Alfred, who is in NtN as
“the hedgefund manager”/”A’s little brother” - Alfred, because we know who Augustine’s little brother is, and he and “the nun” were kind of teaming up at the end again in that mirror of how they forced Augustine and Mercy into Lyctorhood.
These two are referred to by nicknames because they have the same initials as two other people (Cassiopeia and Augustine, obviously) and it would be even more confusing if you had to figure out which C is talking on top of who C is in the first place.

**SPOILER FREE REVIEW**
Oh, October Daye, a series near and dear to my heart. Obviously it has some appeal for me, considering I’ve made it to book 16. It’s a Faerie-based urban fantasy series (though less urban in recent years) with memorable twists, great character development, and a concerted effort toward broad LGBT representation. That being said, it is hard for me to wholeheartedly recommend this series to others; it’s long, and while some entries are incredible, others… aren’t. The previous book, When Sorrows Come, is the worst in the series due to egregious filler and bizarre editorial issues. By contrast, Be The Serpent is fantastic, featuring a satisfying, emotional payoff built up from the very first book.
October Daye focuses heavily on the long game. While I’m sure some characters and plots are invented whole-cloth, it’s clear many story beats and developments have been planned from inception. A core component of the series revolves around hidden identities. Almost every major character (and there are a lot of them) is either secretly someone else or has something to hide. In a series full of crazy setups and payoffs, Be The Serpent contains the most shocking one yet; no small feat. According to the opening acknowledgments, this was planned a good fifteen books ago. From most authors, I’d be skeptical of such a claim, but I completely believe it here; so many weird details suddenly make sense.
If you’re not familiar with October Daye but have some interest in the series, I recommend reading to at least An Artificial Night (#3, the first major turning point) and seeing if you wish to continue from there. As I said, the series is a little hit or miss, but the hits are fantastic. My personal favorite entries are An Artificial Night (#3), The Winter Long (#8), The Brightest Fell (#11), and now this bombshell, Be The Serpent (#16).
**SPOILER REVIEW**
Jesus fucking Christ, STACY was Titania? Quite literally the last character I’d ever expect. But by God does it explain the weird shit going on with her bloodline and children. It looks like a lot of people suspected this, but I genuinely had no idea. I didn’t expect the casual “Stacy’s kids are kind of weird, huh” detail to explode in such a gut-wrenching way. Yeah, when the pre-release blurb mentioned the betrayal of a long-time ally, my sister and I immediately thought of the two most suspicious characters (Marcia and Stacy) but my brain never made the Titania connection. So like… half-guessed the twist, I guess? Even if Stacy was our second choice?
Anyway, this entry is highly reminiscent of The Winter Long, which is nothing but a compliment. I’ll have to ruminate on whether this beats that book and/or The Brightest Fell in terms of personal enjoyment. I had many complaints about When Sorrows Come and distinctly remember saying the series NEEDS a Winter Long-type shakeup. Well god damn did Be The Serpent deliver. I’m so pumped for where the series is going; I hope the days of filler plots and forgettable villains are behind us now.
Be The Serpent pulls no punches. Its inciting incident is the brutal murder of Jessica Brown, a recurring child character. There’s an overwhelming sense of unease as her mother Stacy becomes more and more suspicious. The reveal that Stacy is (unwittingly) Titania, who’s trapped in an eternal loop of cursed reincarnation and child murder, is… quite something. “Stacy” even MEANS “resurrection”, an infuriating bit of foreshadowing. Titania has been built up as a major antagonist throughout the series, and there’s a stark contrast between her and Stacy, a stalwart ally since book one. I think one thing McGuire did especially well in this novel is portray the transition between the two characters; the sense of wrongness when “Stacy” says something off-color just ramps up the tension until it explodes.
I’ve mentioned this a lot already, but this book solidifies my suspicion that Marcia is Maeve. Be The Serpent all but looks the reader in the eye to say that reveal is coming next, and that she’s someone we know. And there’s a ton of evidence both in this book and previous entries that line up with Marcia– her name, Firstborn acting strange around her, her ambiguous history and heritage, her association with water, the whole “can see through reality” line Toby drops and then refuses to elaborate on, the lack of suspicion around her, and so on. She is the only character in the huge cast that makes sense. I kinda hope the next book is the one to drop the reveal, especially after so much specific buildup for it in this entry.
Be The Serpent also ends on a cliffhanger, which I believe is a series first. Even though A Killing Frost drops the Oberon twist at the end, it still wraps up its conflict. Things are ambiguous here though. Toby has been kidnapped and brainwashed? Is she in a dream, a manufactured reality, or has Titania actually bent the world to her own whims? Is the August Toby encounters actually her half-sister, an illusion, or someone else? Is “Father” Simon and “Mother” Amandine? There’s also the unanswered question re: how Simon managed to resist Titania’s mind control toward the end of the book; he is “of her blood”, and his genetically identical twin Sylvester fell under her thrall. Until this point, Simon has been the poster child for “easily mind controlled” – by Titania’s daughter Eira no less– so I’ve got nothing on why that happened.
Whatever is next, I’m looking forward to it. While recent entries have been a little hit or miss, the final chapter of Be The Serpent establishes an intriguing premise in the next book, at least.

Diferenciar entre ambos casos es crucial, sobre todo a la hora de ocultar estos encuentros a la pareja en cuestión. Ojo, no decimos que esté bien ni abogamos por ello (y tampoco pensamos lo contrario) pero tanto si eres de los que pone los cuernos como si no, es importante que leas lo que tenemos que contarte.
Una infidelidad de una noche (de dos, de tres...) con personas diferentes, es muy fácil de ocultar a tu media naranja. Solo has de ducharte, vigilar que no te haya visto nadie y, si fuera necesario, tener una coartada con alguien. Imagina que te vas a una cena a, pongamos, Valencia, y ahí conoces a una persona interesante, sexualmente al menos. Y una cosa lleva a la otra, risitas, que si qué divertida, que si qué guapa, que si otra copa de vino, que si un bailecito... y cuando te quieres dar cuenta, estás entre las piernas de ese ser que acabas de conocer, y te has olvidado por completo que llevas una alianza en la mano. Bueno, en ese caso, si no deseas confesar la infidelidad, no tienes más que decir a tu novio o novia que "la noche fue bien, un poco aburrida, tomamos algunas copas, cariño, ya sabes, lo típico, me fui a dormir pronto al hotel porque, ya sabes, con gente tan sosa no había mucho que hacer, me puse con el móvil hasta las tantas y me desvelé, y claro, por eso tengo esta cara de cansado...", etc. No hay peligro. Un único consejo: no des muchos detalles de tu noche ni seas demasiado ambiguo, porque te acabarán pillando, sobre todo si la cornuda es una mujer (somos más intuitivas y captamos mejor el lenguaje no verbal).

Un amante es una persona por la que se siente algo (amor, empatía, cariño, cercanía, comprensión) y con la que se mantienen relaciones sexuales (normalmente más placenteras que con la pareja formal) de forma periódica. Puede ser una vez a la semana, una vez al mes... pero no todos los días. Estos encuentros, además, suelen producirse entre semana. Una vez diferenciado el escarceo ocasional con una relación extramarital, pasemos al punto que nos ocupa: cómo tener un amante sin que la pareja se dé cuenta. Si tienes uno, te estás planteando la idea o sospechas que tu amorcín te la pega, muy atento a los trucos supereficaces para que no le pillen a uno

Ser sincero con el amante
Buscarse un amante con pareja
Que pertenezcan a mundos distintos
Cuidado con las mascotas
Ducharse bien, pero no con jabones ajenos
Las quedadas, solo entresemana
No ser regular en los encuentros
Mínimo una relación de amantes teniendo una relación con sus parejas la duración de la relación es aproximadamente 2 años

Web of Spider-Man #59
Average battle, but there’s some fun other stuff going on.
Titania comes looking for a rematch with Spidey.
We’ve just had a story where a villain comes and thrashes the Daily Bugle looking for Spider-Man. It’s too soon to see it again. Editor asleep at the wheel?
That said, Titania makes a fun foe. Her history with (and total fear of) Spider-Man should make her exempt from ACTS OF VENGEANCE but the script finds a (contrived) way to side-step that. Guess they really wanted her to fight Spidey. The best things about the issue are the Puma and Spidey’s new powers. Seeing a new editorial slant at the Bugle is amusing and Puma acting as Spider-Man’s bodyguard/protector is something I’d like to see more of. Then, there’s our hero’s new cosmic powers. This is gonna be an entertaining ride.

:/ do publishers actually contribute something to science other than exploitation?
I guess they organize the editorial staff that coordinate peer review and make the final decisions on acceptance (although editors are often also volunteers). They run journal websites, which are usually bad, and the web systems for the reviewal process, which in my experience are UNIVERSALLY TERRIBLE.
Basically, you could take a couple of Important Professors as editors and a bunch of entry-level web designers and produce something at least as good as most Elsevier journals in all the ways that really count. With that kind of staff you could charge people $20/year for a subscription or $100 for an accepted paper or something and it’d turn a small profit.
The problem is that the Journal Of A Couple Dudes Who Hate Academic Publishing doesn’t have a good impact factor, so you don’t get Science Points for publishing in their journal, and if you don’t get enough Science Points you don’t get to level up your Sciencing to a point where you can actually make a decent living.
It’s a pretty good scam if you’re a publisher though!
