It's fascinating to me how, through the lens of Miles' jealousy, the narrative actually primes the viewer to be distrustful towards Hobie. He's close to Gwen, he shows Miles up with his first appearance.

Except he's then like, genuinely nice to Miles. And proceeds to be the only one to side with and blatantly assist Miles when shit hits the fan with Miguel. It's so perfect for the character for him to be a subversion of the tropes you expect to play out.

Like it's such an interesting case of narrative framing, that I think is meant to make us discount what he's doing until the twist, even though his actions are very intentional and not just chaos for chaos sake.

He knows the spider society and their fixation on canon is not good news. And the people he's nicest to are all the other teens caught in this system that he is very aware is likely to hurt them.

finished the minutemen section and has me thinking about how many musicians have died in vehicle accidents (even if in the minutemen case it wasn't tour related) like i know it was a conscious choice in waybt to have car crashes deliniate important bookmarks in emo history but the way it just always keeps coming up in rock history. the way the stress of the road is understood in very abstract terms when in actuality for decades the possibility of devastating injury or death is just a normal expected aspect of being a touring musician, esp with the demand placed on bands to make stops on short notice. like i always think about cliff burton and randy rhoads bc thats the scope i have... the loss of that talent and the could have been... but its Everywhere. the music just keeps dying and sometimes i wonder how responsible we are for it
