so here are some thoughts about DMD Friendship the Reality while we are nearing the end

yeah yeah its not that deep but actually no one caring/talking about a show makes me want to write a LONG ASS POST bc i cant get gratification from going through the tags and reading opinions lmaoooooo so HERE damn okkk i will make the content i want to see in the world i guess dont mind me......😞

im not even the biggest Domundi fan but i was intrigued by the premise of this show. i mean it's a basically fake dating show (like one of their challenge rewards was getting to sleep in a suite together as if they are there to date for real) and the end prize isnt just an acting opportunity as it comes w the big decision of choosing a looooooong time acting partner. so i wanted to see how they would do it. BOC did a similar thing w The Hidden Character which i dropped halfway in bc it was too long and i found the challenges to be irrelevant to the ending goal. this show is the opposite of that and thats why ive been enjoying it.

it is edited to be concise (only 5 eps) and honestly, is quite tranquil. all the challenges were about things they will be required to do in the future as DMD actors/idols and stakes aren't even that high. You could always guess who would win before they even started (((like of course broody model guys won the photoshoot challenge and guy w two series under his belt won the acting one, DUH))) but it was still enjoyable to watch. show's goal isn't to generate tension and competitiveness. it is more of a workshop/chemistry building camp and also a way to introduce the new generation and get the fans warm up/attached to them.

as i spent time in bl fandom sphere, i've come to realize introducing a new gen is tricky. i thought everyone would be ecstatic to see new blood and a lil bit of mix and match but BL fans are reaaaaaaaaaaally attached to their faves and generally see newcomers as threats who will take opportunities from their already neglected (!) precious babies (e.g. just couple weeks ago FortPeat fans were protesting the new lesbian side couple in the upcoming show for stealing screen time from their faves, which is a joke in itself). this kind of show is genius way to get people to warm up to idea of new faces. at the end of the the day, these fans' weakness is two beautiful boys indulging in sweet moments they can be delulu over and considering how ships were already born from the first episode, DMD FTR succeeded in their goal.

LETS TALK ABOUT THE BOYS :-) *this starts playing*

I had to make this during first ep bc they are all dark haired boys w similar builds so I kept confusing them lmaoooooo (Tle not pictured as he joined later)

i will firstly talk about the fan favorite possible "couples";

KengNamping, the quiet visual couple and yes I love em!!!! they were kinda the only "conflict" in this very conflict free competition.

is Keng the CALMEST person I've ever seen? Latte is laid back too but Keng is just seems zen. sometimes (in the face of conflict) he just seemed hard to read but mostly he has such a calming presence. honestly, he should open an ASMR channel if this acting gig doesn't work out.

Namping also comes off very warm and graceful. him being "wow I'm finally in the winner suite" to Keng after finally getting chosen in ep4 made me laugh like DAMN he really was offended by what happened in ep1 and kept letting it slip. Idc, you are so right my prince and don't ever let Keng forget what he did to you...

when it comes to the possibility of them as a couple: i am kinda here for it while also not knowing if i actually believe in their "moments" in the show? Namping definitely set his sights on him from the beginning but Keng seemed nonchalant about it. Keng finally choosing Namping after his win, their sweet moment on the bed etc. seemed to me like classic reality show moment prompted by production to fit a certain narrative WHILE ThomasKong's pseudo-date-night chats seemed very real and spontaneous.

they do visually have chemistry, i'm not gonna act like i wasn't blushing when Keng trying to flirt during dinner or Namping softly touching a sleepy Keng's chin in the bed etc. Or even in ep2, when Namping tries to confront Keng about his pick but they are too timid and just unable to talk about it openly!!! arrghhh it's a hard to watch moment but still, made them more intriguing because they had such a tension between them. it would be a shame if it wasn't explored more. that tension can be channeled into an angsty series, just saying...

So, they def have a long way to go in their bond and arent comfortable like LatteFirst or ThomasKong but still, they are a strong contender and I would be glad to see them as a couple in a show. Namping already got my attention in the acting challenge and wonders can be achieved w a lil bit of workshop. they got the juice already!!!

Now, lets talk about ThomasKong.............

me watching Thomas relentlessly chatting Kong up since THE FIRST EPISODE

so I knew LatteFirst are set be a side couple in upcoming Love Upon a Time but i was confused to see why everyone on Twitter was already going cuckoo over these two random boys until i saw them interacting... Wow, like Thomas really came here w one mission: get Kong and leave.

because Thomas is such a flirt like DAMNNN😳😳😳😳he needs to be jailed for carrying lethal amounts of charm... IT MUST BE SAID: I love his fits w those thin glasses, he should've been wearing those in those office BLs he was in because he has been serving "office siren". Tiktok girlies eat your heart out.

while Kong isn't the best at acting or singing (he is the best KengNamping shipper tho and i LOVE a fudanshi BL actor), he definitely would win Mr. Congeniality if they were giving that title. he naturally and effortlessly has great on screen charisma. he is a certified cutie and the only one who can get real full belly laughs from Thomas!!!

i think what they managed in the acting challenge is the testament to their palpable chemistry. acting wise they weren't perfect (naturally, their uneven acting experience levels were apparent) but they were the only one who managed to tonal shift in their scenes. it's because they were the only ones who played into the romantic subtext of the scene. they also held eye contact for the longest (because they are comfortable w each other and not shy!!!), which elevated their chemistry and made me AND the judges giggle and roll our hair and kick our feet and shit!!!!!!!!!!!!

they are obviously the most likely to win the show and they deserve it too. no matter the result of the show, i want see them carrying a series as mains because they can and should. i also believe DMD won't fumble their bag, so i am not worried about it.

to conclude, I will quote Zee,

then we come to LatteFirst, the kinda established couple: in the ep5 preview, we see First trying to choose between Latte and the newcomer Tle, which seemed random to me and could be a production touch to create conflict in this very smooth sailing show.

i loved seeing Latte being nonchalant about the possibility of First choosing someone else, what a laid back guy. like Mio in THC, every BL reality show needs a half asleep and occasionally funny dude.

now i am thinking; what if First chose Tle, would he also replace Latte in LUAT bc DMD doesn't really fuck w mixing matching their couples. i honestly don't know where did all that come from but i feel like the result wont be too shocking, First and Latte are already really close and comfortable and got The Chemistry. need i remind of Latte punching the air a la Judd Nelson at the end of The Breakfast Club when it was announced they both chose each other for the dinner date? and their sweet and comfortable banter on that said date??? let's put our pens to work and write a friends to lovers rom-com for the boys based on that material please...

i dont think they are likely to win but might be strong contender. i just want to see them as a side couple in LUAT (hopefully this year!!!!) so they can develop themselves and their bond a little bit more before getting to a main couple level. their sweet friendship shouldn't go to waste!!! (is it obvious i am more drawn to BL couples who are besties in real life?)

damn this post is about to be a novella so i will make it short about Gems, TeeTee and Tle, i hope Gems won't be too upset about getting slighted again 😥 like i said, stakes aren't high on this show and results are always obvious: these guys are going back home empty handed, we all know it. they are all charismatic and VERYYY talented but i just felt like none of them really focused on "getting a partner" part of the show, not just the main challenges. even TeeTee who was picked by Thomas and Keng seemed kinda uninterested about partnering up. but you cant really force chemistry and i am sure they will get many more opportunities in the future. they already started their fanbase!!! i cant stand to see Gems so upset, i hope he wont be too sad.

these are my opinions. maybe the ending will do a whole 180 and idk, GemsKeng or TleKong or some other random couple will win, who knows???? cant wait to watch the new overly airbrush filtered, Cheewin directed DMD show up to like 5 episodes and then get bored and drop it and follow the rest from gifs!!! good luck to the boys <3

Baroness by Yushi Li ‘(m)Other’

For the third edition of Baroness, photographer Yushi Li takes us on a journey of desire, fantasy and looking, through a photographic study of the male body. For Li’s debut book cover, the photographer has chosen a photograph of a penis. In a heteropatriarchy, where men are represented in the media as big and strong, here the penis is small, flaccid and trapped, presenting a playful, slightly violent, but gentle and almost comical gaze.

The naked male bodies in Li’s works are not intended for consumption. Instead, the male body is represented in its relation to other elements in the frame, which always involves a staging of a scene, a fantasy. The domestic space and the mundane activities in the works, invite the viewer to see beyond the naked body. The man in her images is the phallus, the signifier of desire – the desire of the (m)Other. Li’s portrayal of the body is a condensation of the imaginary: the unknown paternal and maternal body– and the fantasy of the absent (m)Other.

Throughout the book, Li questions the gaze through different works. ‘My Tinder Boys’ is a set of photographs of naked young men in their kitchens — always soft-fleshed and flaccid, mostly gazing off-camera. ‘Your Reservation is Confirmed’, further develops ideas around consumption and satisfaction. Rather than Tinder, this time it’s Airbnb — a hook-up App for houses. Each image takes us to a new room, in a new house, occupied by a new naked man and often Li herself, fully clothed, engaged in some kind of leisure activity.

In Li’s most recent series ‘Paintings, Dreams and Love’, we are invited to look at paintings through a different lens. Inspired by classical oil paintings of female nudes, Li creates a ‘cornucopia’ of men in the diptych ‘The Feast’, while Titian’s ‘Death of Actaeon’ is re-enacted, with the artist outside pointing her bow and arrow both beyond the frame but also ostensibly at a naked man inside. In ‘The Dream of the Fisherwoman’, we see Hokusai’s writhing, erotic octopus become a fishmonger’s corpse, draped across a serenely bathing boy.

Li plays with the power dynamic inherent in looking relations further in her moving image work ‘I Hope You Like What You Have Seen’, in which Li asked different men to perform naked, mundane activities for her to watch via Skype. In these video chats, Li tries to become the digital eye, not a woman, nor a man, that is constantly looking at us.

Through both looking back at old paintings, and looking directly via the webcam, Li leads us to drift between the physical and the virtual, the conscious and the unconscious, approaching a new form of theatre, desire and spectatorship.

Baroness by Yushi Li also includes an introduction by psychoanalyst and writer Anouchka Grose.

Yushi Li

Yushi Li is a Chinese artist, based in London. She holds an MA in Photography and is now doing her PhD in Arts & Humanities, at the Royal College of Art. Li received the Royal Photography Society Hundred Heroines Award in 2019 and was one of the winners of the Female in Focus prize in 2021. Li’s work has been exhibited internationally, with a recent group show at Fotografiska, Stockholm and solo shows at Union Gallery, London and Vasli Souza, Oslo.

❝ ST MUNGO’S HOSPITAL HAS CERTAINLY HIT THE JACKPOT as madam dionisia belby - best known for her work in beautifying our community one shrub at a time - opens the doors of the expansive belby estate for a night of fundraising fun, unlikely to be forgotten any time soon ! inspired by the muggle phenomenon of public gambling houses, miss belby has transformed the lower level of her home into a picture perfect casino, complete with hourly games of poker and blackjack, eight self spinning roulette wheels and a wall of enchanted slot machines with REAL ( and safely contained ) firework displays for the lucky few ! the one galleon entry fee constitutes one entry to the end of night raffle, with additional ticket stubs and game chips available for purchase from the red and blue wearing servers ! all house takings and donations go straight to the hospital itself, per miss belby’s express request, so put on your lucky shoes and head across to casino night at the belby estate ! ❞

WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE :

the belby estate consists of a large elizabethan manor and sprawling gardens tended to within an inch of their lives by dionisia herself. the long time home of the ( once highly regarded and ) now retired theora belby, the grounds are not only where dionisia spent her girlhood but also where she has chosen to make her livelihood ; the belby orangery and arboretum are relatively new additions in comparison to other nearby landmarks, but fit right in with everything else. the first floor and the private greenhouse attached to the manor - not usually open to the public on operational days - are primarily used for entertainment purposes, while the second and third floors are living spaces and offices that will be strictly off limits to guests on casino night. everyone is informed of this on entry and anyone who is found to be in violation of the verbal agreement to not stray up there will be ejected from the premises immediately with no exceptions.

the transformation of the first floor into a true to life casino is genuinely impressive ; private poker rooms have been made of the three downstairs studies, while the generally unused ballroom has become the ‘main floor’ area, complete with lines upon lines of wix inspired slot machines ( match three hippogriffs in a row, be the lucky one to land on the special galleon sign, or try your luck at finding the machine clearly inspired by harry potter’s plight that has been mysteriously turned off for the evening ). the roulette wheels have been charmed to take care of themselves, and don’t worry if you’re unfamiliar with the actual concept of any of the games ; servers aren’t just weaving their way through the crowds with platters of canapé’s and alcohol held high but also instructed to zero in on any clueless faces and offer a guiding hand.

the big big raffle at the end of the night contains a variety of expensive prizes donated by businesses local to the diagon alley and hogsmeade areas - there are gift cards for the most popular of places to eat, a limited edition leather bound copy of the tales of beedle the bard from flourish and blott’s, a voucher from madam primpernelle’s beautifying potions and, most impressively, a brand new nimbus 2007 for the overall winner of the evening, and that’s just a taste. everyone who pays the entry fee gets entered into the draw, but additional entries can be purchased at a slightly higher rate & all the actual earnings from the various gambling games go straight to st mungo’s. dionisia expressed to the wwn in an interview two nights ahead of casino night that she owes it to the hospital to provide a tidy sum at the end of it all, given her mother’s long career and the care they gave her when she was just a little girl - with so much on offer, it’s hard to see how she could ever fail to make good on the promise.

A-T-3 176 Double Dee & Steinski - Lesson 1 (The Payoff Mix)

One month after the release of Play That Beat Mr DJ Tommy Boy launch their Down By Law Switch The Licks Mastermix Contest. Shep Pettibone was (and still is) the king of the Mastermix, his innovative mixes for 98.7 Kiss FM in New York were extremely popular and influential. There were others of course, Tony Humphries was given his big break when he stood in for Shep on Kiss FM, the Latin Rascals were getting their mastermixes aired on New York City dance radio WKTU, and in Chicago there was the Hot Mix 5 on WBMX's Saturday Night Live Ain't No Jive mix show (here's an example from 1983). In addition to these DJ only bootleg edits were being circulated by the likes of Danny Krivit and others, and Ron Hardy was making his equally revolutionary edits

Tommy Boy's mastermix contest offered the grand prize of $100, a custom Tommy Boy t-shirt, and records. They would also put the winner on a Disconet comp, which was a record sent out to club and radio DJs, and a guarantee of getting play on radios across the country. 75 entries were submitted, 10 made it to the second round which would be played to a panel of industry experts

"[Shep] Pettibone and [John "Jellybean"] Benitez were part of a blue-ribbon panel who downed pizza and beer at a listening party where the winner would be chosen from 10 finalists. The hot dance track of the moment, Shannon's "Let the Music Play," saw heavy action in the early going--since both songs are addressed to DJs, there was even a thematic connection. But the ninth entry didn't come from a DJ, and it didn't dip into Shannon's well, either. It did glance off hot dance tracks by Yaz, the Peech Boys, Herbie Hancock, Culture Club, and Indeep amid rap, disco, funk, and rock and roll classics too numerous to mention--as well as less melodic material from Humphrey Bogart, Dr. Saint, Betty White's dance instructor, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. When the tape was through, the judges broke into applause. They knew instantly that Double Dee & Steinski had taken mastermixing into new realms--or appeared to, which was good enough for openers."

The winning entry came from Double Dee & Steinski. Both of them worked in commercials, Doug DeFranco (Double Dee) as an engineer for radio commercials and Steve Stein (Steinski) as a producer and ideas man. The kind of sound collage they produced wasn't entirely new. Cut and paste techniques and tape loops had been around for a while, as novelty by Buchanan & Goodman (The Flying Saucer, 1956), avant-garde by Steve Reich (It's Gonna Rain Pts 1+2, 1965), experimental non-music of Negativeland, and hip-hop (The Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel, 1981 - to be fair this should really be Lesson 1, with a mix of Buffalo Gals as lesson 2). Lesson 1 is somewhere in between all these examples, it has novelty but isn't just a novelty record, it has the technical experimentation of process music, and it has breakbeats and blends that will be familiar to hip hop DJs

"So, one weekend we gathered up ten crates of records and camped out at the studio until the evening, and again the next day. And that was it, just the two days. After all there was no random access that computers gave us, you really had to work linearly from start to finish. We picked something to begin with (the top of the record) and kept asking “what next?”

"It was a real back-and-forth, and a true collaboration between the two of us - a beautiful creation from our hearts and rumps. Otherwise Lesson One wasn’t different from the work I was doing on a daily basis. But it was new territory and it sparked the discovery of Steve's unique production talents." - For two people working on something as abbreviated and ephemeral as commercials Double Dee & Steinski have been all over documenting their legacy in exhaustive detail. WBAI's Peter Bochan had a significant influence on Steinski, he produced spoken-words-and-music collages Shortcuts which he put out on tape

DJs love this record because Steinski is an obsessive record collector and he has incredible knowledge of records. Two more Lessons followed, 1984s excellent James Brown Mix, and people's favourite History Of Hip Hop Mix in 1985. The Lessons have charm and humour which you can't say for all of the hit records it inspired, such as Paul Hardcastle's global hit 19 in 1985, or M|A|R|R|Ss global hit Pump Up The Volume in 1987

Although not the first in hip hop the Lessons are probably the most influential and celebrated example of the cut-up style, taking cut-up to the next level, they really were an education for producers and DJs (later known as turntablists). In 2002 Strachild records put out The Ultimate Lessons compilation which contained all three of the original lessons along with another three: Lesson 4 by Dj Shadow, and 5 and 6 by Cut Chemist. The follow-up compilation The Ultimate Lessons 2 (the ultimate ultimate) has Coldcut's 1987 debut single Say Kids? on it. I remember this being the number 1 hip hop record in the UK on Mike Allen's National Fresh show for weeks. Say Kids? is directly influenced by the Lessons, it has the same wit to it and the samples have never been cleared. Coldcut would collaborate with Steinski in 1997. Say Kids? leads to Eric B. & Rakim's Paid In Full (Seven Minutes Of Madness - The Coldcut Remix) and the Double Trouble (Norman Cook and the awful Dancin Danny D) mix of Eric B. & Rakim's I Know You Got Soul, both from 1987. A year later the Dust Brothers produced Know How by Young MC would be released, and the first Prince Paul produced De La Soul singles would come out (on Tommy Boy to bring things full circle)

Cut-up wasn't confined to hip hop. For example Adrian Sherwood and Tackhead mixed the cut-up style with dub and funk, and Meat Beat Manifesto used the technique with an industrial sound. There are Negativeland's undefinable albums Escape From Noise and Helter Stupid. Arthur Baker, a judge for the Tommy Boy contest, would use cut-up on dance records like Criminal Element Orchestra's Put The Needle To The Record (with Wally Jump Jr), and in the UK cut-up was used by L.A. Mix with Don't Stop (Jamming') and S'Express, Bomb The Bass, etc... And how can I forget Deee-Lite

Back to 1983 and the Tommy Boy contest. As part of their grand prize Double Dee & Steinski's winning entry was pressed up on Disconet Volume 6 Program 7 for DJs in January 1984 as Play That Beat, Mr. DJ (Master Mix First Place). The duo went back into the studio, this time for two whole weekends, and came up with the James Brown Mix which they called Lesson 2. Double Dee & Steinski privately pressed up 500 copies of a disco with these first two Lessons on it. In 1985 they made Lesson 3 (The History Of Hip Hop) which Tommy Boy put out as a promo with the other two mixes, I think this was the is when their mix of Play That Beat, Mr. DJ is renamed Lesson 1 (The Payoff Mix). In the UK Island records (I'm assuming using the sub label 4th + Broadway) made an effort to put out the Lessons officially, they cleared all the samples but the rumour is they couldn't come to a deal over the Herman Kelly sample and the project fell apart. The "Health for All" Film Festival.

Nearly 800 film makers from 106 countries have submitted short films for the 4th edition of the WHO Health for All Film Festival, on themes ranging from the trauma of war to living with COVID-19. Some 90 films have been chosen for the shortlist, for review by a jury of international artists and development leaders, before the announcement of the winners in June 2023.

“The Health for All Film Festival gathers powerful stories on many health issues from all over the world, bringing emotion and a human face to WHO’s scientific work,” says WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “Film has great potential to raise awareness of lesser-known health issues and improve understanding of people’s experiences with health – these are important ways to advance towards Health for All.”

The following distinguished professionals, artists and activists, joined by WHO senior experts, comprise this year’s festival jury: Sharon Stone (actor from the USA); Alfonso Herrera (actor from Mexico); Ricky Kej (musician from India); Melissa Fleming (United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications); Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng (United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health from South Africa); Sherrie Silver (dance choreographer from Rwanda), Sophia Kianni (Iranian-American climate activist ); and Adelle Onyango (media personality and podcaster from Kenya).

The 90 shortlisted films are available on WHO’s YouTube channel in six playlists, one for each of the competition categories: Universal health coverage, Health emergencies, Better health and well-being, Climate change and health, Sexual and reproductive health and rights and Very short films.

A wide range of topics are covered by this year’s selection: trauma of war; diseases, including COVID-19, HIV/AIDS, mental health issues; disability; as well as environmental and social factors of health, including gender-based violence. The public is encouraged to view and comment on their favourite shortlisted films and champion them on social media using the hashtag #Film4Health.

In the coming weeks, jurors will review the shortlisted films and recommend winners to the WHO Director-General, who will make the final decision. Three “GRAND PRIX” and four special prizes will be announced in June at the online Awards Ceremony followed by a series of discussions with winners and jurors.

Since the festival launched in 2020, almost 4300 films have been submitted by patients, health workers, activists, students and professional film makers.

PHOTOGRAPHY RESEARCH PT.7

PATI SOLOMONA TYRELL

Pati Solomona is an Auckland photographer exploring his Samoan heritage and queer identity with a mix of photography, film and performance art. Pati’s work has been in many exhibitions all around New Zealand and in 2018 he became the youngest person nominated for the ‘Walters Prize’ which is New Zealand’s most prestigious contemporary art award. I will be looking at a mix of Pati Solomona’s work like ‘fāgogo’ and ‘fafswag’ which were my two personal favourite bodies of his work.

Fagogo is a moving image film that works to honour pasifika traditions of storytelling and also to unpack the white colonial gaze that has been placed on queer brown bodies. The moving image represents stories and spoken fables that get passed down from generation to generation. Fagogo actually means fable in Samoan. All of the elements of the film are very well researched by Tyrell himself and then used in his directing of the moving film. From what I’ve been able to see of the film, its done in a black studio space which creates a very dramatic shadows onto the figures in Pati’s work which is only light up by colourful studio lighting like reds and blues. The people are dressed up both traditionally and with elements of modern expression like the makeup and painted nails which is another nod to the breaking down of strict gender roles. The people sometimes merge together creating an interesting form as the mythical storytelling is conveyed.

I also loved Fafswag which is an exploration into the queer Auckland ballroom and vogue scene. To vogue is a modern house dance which is super stylised and came out around the 1960s from ballrooms which were underground queer spaces made up mostly by LGBTQ+ African Americans and Latinos. It’s where drag really flourished from and it’s where drag pageants are hosted. Fafswag is a site and exhibition made to be explored and it features a bunch of queer pasifika artists performing in drag and doing the vogue dance style in a bunch of places around Auckland. It’s also very interactive as you can pick a ‘character’ (one of the featured artists and dancers) and then pick the location the two will dance. Then after watching to two dance off you can even pick a winner and then it lets you learn about the story of your chosen artist. I had a lot of fun checking out this website as I’m a sucker for an interactive exhibition and learning tool because it really hooks me in and gets me excited to learn. Also just this subject matter is something that I care a lot about. The filmography here too is also really astounding, there were times I wasn’t sure if the people were actually filmed in the physical location or if it was editing but just because the editing was incredibly smooth and the coloured studio lighting making an appearance again amplifies each person in almost an unbelievable way.

Lidice children remembered in special art exhibition at UNESCO headquarters in Paris

Over 200 pictures painted by children from more than 60 countries around the world are now on display at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. The artworks are all prize-winning entries from the last 20 years of the Lidice International Children's Art Competition, which was established to honour the memory of the children murdered in the Czech village of Lidice during WWII. The competition celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

Curator Veronika Trubačová says the exhibition is divided into two parts, the first part presenting a selection of the best works from the last 20 years reproduced on banners, and the second part presenting last year’s winners.

“Some of them are presented on textile banners and some are in the original form. This is last year's edition, the 49th year, which was on the theme of robots and artificial intelligence.”

Each year, the competition has a different theme, chosen by the Lidice Memorial in cooperation with the Czech Commission for UNESCO. The topics can be as diverse as music, biodiversity, and happiness. The theme of this year's competition was "museums", eliciting drawings and paintings of mammoths, ships, and archaeological excavations.

On average, the competition receives around 20,000 entries from children in 70-80 countries annually. Curator Veronika Trubačová says that she hopes children from Ukraine will participate in next year’s edition once again.

“There may be children from Ukraine in the Czech Republic or Germany, for example. We'll see – the deadline is February 10th. We'll be very happy if we receive some artworks by Ukrainian children.”

The exhibition commemorates not only the 50th anniversary of the competition, but also the 80th anniversary of the Lidice atrocity itself.

French ambassador to UNESCO, Véronique Roger-Lacan, compares the Lidice tragedy to the events taking place in Ukraine today. Despite this, she says, the ambassadors of some countries still refuse to condemn Russia’s act of aggression.

"Many of them abstain when we ask them to condemn the Russian aggression against Ukraine. At the extraordinary meeting held in March, 33 countries voted to condemn the Russian aggression, but many countries either abstained from voting or did not participate. Among these countries were, for example, China, South Africa and Brazil."

Czech Culture Minister Martin Baxa, who opened the exhibition, also sees parallels between the suppression of democratic principles in the 1930s which led to the rise of the Nazis, WWII and atrocities such as Lidice, and Russia’s war on Ukraine today.

“What is happening today is, in a sense, a very similar story. The story of a country where normal democratic principles are not functioning, and which can then unleash such incredible aggression as the Putin regime has unleashed in Ukraine.”

This makes the exhibition especially relevant today, says Mr. Baxa, as well as sending an important message that the atrocity which took place 80 years ago has not been forgotten.

“The fact that the exhibition is here at the UNESCO headquarters is a message that we nowadays are not indifferent to the fate of the children of Lidice. It's not just a story from the past.”

The exhibition is running until Friday October 28, 2022.

TITANE. LAMB. ANNETTE. (Who Did It Best: "The Creepy Child" Edition!)

Halloween decorations are now long gone but let's keep the freaky spirit going with this 2021 triple bill about creepy children from hell! TITANE, LAMB, and ANNETTE

What they have in common, despite having a particularly cool one-word-title, is that they are somewhat magic or surreal, and play like fairy tales filled with bizarre events and weirdos having even weirder... progeny. These movies are definitely of the “WTF Did I Watch Today" variety (and maybe a tad NSFW - depending on where you work!) thus are not to be recommended to everyone, which somehow might make them even more precious. Sure, they are considered niche and maybe will appeal more to cinephiles, cult-film-like lovers, possibly the "hip and hype movie-folks'', and those like us on an ongoing quest for the odd & unusual...

In fact, if this titles could talk the convo will be akin to something like this:

TITANE (for France): ‘We present to you “car baby” kinda like Transformers...'

LAMB (for Iceland): 'Hold my beer - We present to you “lamb baby...'

ANNETTE (for Leos Carax!): 'Hold up, did somebody say baby but make it weird...'

The End!

Make of that what you wish but the additional good thing about the 3 films of the night is that they are award-season material (all premiered at Cannes) with TITANE and LAMB respectively representing France and Iceland. And ANNETTE…. representing, what a collaboration between the Sparks brothers and Leo Carax - and Adam Driver - would look like! So, ready or not, ready yourself for these unforgettable films...

*And an "uncanny valley fest"!?

TITANE

The 2021 Palme d’Or is a horror film by Julia Ducournau (the second non-man, after Jane Campion, to win the top prize in 74 editions!). It stars newcomer Agathe Rousselle as Alexia who was a creepy child herself with a strange obsession for automobiles... However, after a car accident, she has to be implanted with titanium that will give her a signature later on in life as a grown-up badass sexy dancer at… auto shows! Her life is pretty much all gloom and doom until things get even more bewildering and violent. After an “unfortunate series of murderous events,” she has no choice but to try her best to impersonate a missing man named Adrien. Alexia goes to live with the lad's overprotective part-psycho-part-loving father, Vincent (played by the great Vincent Lindon) who happens to be a firemen captain living in a jail-like fire station with many other young firefighters. Naturally, Vincent wants his "son" to be a “real man”, and a fireman, but their relationship is, to say the least... problematic. It doesn’t help that Alexia is a woman of few words going through an “unnatural” transition...

Moral Of The Story: 8.5/10 ****

This is the one film of the year 2021 that you will remember forever and ever as there sure ain’t nothing like it anywhere else! TITANE should have been our favorite film of the year, having all the peculiar attributes we cherish so much (and also you know being a Cannes winner - they sure are chosen well!) and altho it might not be, it still is a solid (like titanium!) movie that might just be short of a masterpiece. It seems at times uneven (ranging from good to amazing) with the middle part dragging a little, but at the same time, we are treated to basically 2 films in one. In addition, the performances are spectacular, especially Lindon who is as transformed as Roussel transforms herself throughout the movie. But there is no doubt the bonkerz premise and original story is what makes TITANE a must-see. Despite having its fair share of body horror it is probably not as shocking as RAW, and the horror or violence have more “poesy” to it but is also more fun! Guess having something magic, lyrical, gory, extreme, and melodramatic is possible! So, we should thank Ducournau for being so free with a clear vision and unashamed of her crazy kinky idea!

LAMB

Lamb is, believe it or not, the feature debut of its Icelandic filmmaker Valdimar Jóhannsson.

The drama stars Noomi Rapace (speaking in Icelandic cuz she can!) as Maria living on a remote farm in the middle of nowhere with her partner Ingvar. They are very credible as hard-working farmers tending to their land and sheeps, even giving birth to lambs, until one day they bring a quiet “newborn” lamb home. We are not sure why, but it is what it is, and it seems this couple was desperate for a child. We can sense they had this void to fill and it is confirmed as they actually had a crib and all the “equipments” necessary to take care of a new baby. They live a happy life with this mysterious child, but despite the sweet joy of this simple family life in this peaceful valley surrounded by heavenly mountains, we can sense something strange, unnatural, and ominous is bound to happen... Oh yes, there is also Ingvar’s brother coming to the farm to threaten their blissful household and the safety of “the child”; but that should be the least of everyone’s worry… Remember a few years ago we had the excellent Icelandic entry for the Best Foreign Film RAMS about feuding bros, and, well, rams. So, in LAMB we also got those and more!

Moral Of The Story: 8/10 ****

Regardless of the horror-ish aspect of the drama, LAMB makes for a soothing viewing experience with its appeasing colors and the magnificent vistas framed so perfectly coupled with fitted direction and "mood”. It is delicately crowded with vast emptiness and fine and gentle performance, and it appears it could have been the perfect “Covid movie” with 1 location in a beautiful rural setting with a handful of actors. Moreover, it could also be the perfect Icelandic movie, making the most of the gorgeous scenery and the cliches! The story is one-of-a-kind but the actors, and particularly Rapace, are great here. They make this naturalistic yet fantastic drama very grounded. They also give it its easy-going and dark vibe. Some levity and “monotony-breaker” likewise help make the flick less heavy thanks to some well-timed nordic humor. LAMB comes across as a slice of life “at the farm” with a slice of stranger things! Additionally, the film bears the mark of an “A24 horror entry” having this little distinctive “je ne sais quoi”, so it is a win-win-win all around!

ANNETTE

This latest Leo Carax film is an ambitious drama musical - with music by none other than The Sparks - that works as both an homage to LA and/or musical classics, and a modern-day cult classic for high-end camp or grand bizarro projects!

ANNETTE is mostly about Annette’s parents.; they are the protagonists of this love story (cuz duh! Yeah of course it is also a Luvveeeee story, cuz they “love each other so much” like soooooo much yall! But seriously, somebody please nominate this song for an Academy Award for Best Original Song; not because it deserves it by being so good, but because it would be mad to have Driver and Cotillard on stage singing those same verses over and over - with the Sparks brothers in the mix of course!)

Adam Driver plays Henry, a highly performative stand-up comedian/entertainer with some weird sense of showmanship and delusion of grandeur. His lover, Ann (Marion Cotillard), is a superstar opera singer. As mentioned they are consumed by a fiery passionate love and are the talk-of-the-town (Los Angeles) being both famous and a power couple, but like in a Greek tragedy, drama happens! It becomes a tale of jealousy and betrayal… And bad parenting! Because the pair have a kid...A weird weird child. It is played by a puppet and looks like a child from hell named Annette. The precocious girl is magical and so it brings magic to this whimsical rocambolesque fable of love and psychopathic behaviors!

Moral Of The Story: 7.5/10 ****

It's great that the ANNETTE doesn’t take itself too seriously and knows that some of the most bonkerz or uncomfortable scenes are best to have some fun and funny elements sprinkled on top for breathers - and for the audience to laugh not at but with. In the end, this film is unlike any other for better or worse. It is a wild ride in its field (if there is such a field!) and is probably the most off-beat film of 2021. Viewers will be rewarded if they hang in there and are open to some of the “BOLD” artistic choices made.

Driver is now no doubt the king of “unusual actors” but he was mindblowing in this role and playing this over-the-top character to perfection. Think if Phantom of The Opera was an odd megalomaniac, introvert-extravert, privileged hipster! It is perhaps the most versatile part he’s done so far. The physicality of Driver’s performance makes ANNETTE an interesting work and might end up being the film’s real shot as gold (the man might be pulling double duty come award-season with his HOUSE OF GUCCI role too) which might help the film get more views despite its... Huh… "Specific flavoring”! Although ANNETTE seems to have some mainstream appeal, one has to admit that like many of Carax’s it is not the most “accessible” and - like TITANE - is probably one of the most divisive films of its year.

Cotillard did her best with her character but not sure she was the person most would have cast in this role or this movie filled with eccentrics and weirdos. But guess she grounds this project and brings her panache to it. She plays the soft-spoken delicate and ephemeral Anne, though one has to truly suspend disbelief to believe her to be an opera singer! Maybe they should have gone extra camp and cast someone from, let's say from Broadway, like Aubrey McDonald or Idina Menzel, or dunno like Lady Gaga (it would have been an interesting year having her and Driver playing a couple in two flicks! *Plus fun fact: they actually wanted to go the celebrity-singer route with Rihanna, and that could have been super intriguing - and also brought some “color”...) Ultimately, not sure if many other people would have been able to bring the mystic Cotillard instills this character.

Then, there is the unique screenplay coupled with The Sparks music & lyrics making the whole thing poetic and unconventional! One can argue that ANNETTE would’ve probably worked better if it was more subtle in terms of its dialogue and lyrics, but guess one will find joy watching this film and it’s a brand of humor if one is willing to disregard the idiosyncratic aspect of the latter (think parody-like 80s musicals!). Nevertheless, there is no denying that the tunes and lyrics are catchy and sometimes also beautiful (again Oscar-worthy even!)

So, in a nutshell, ANNETTE is indeed completely bonkers, probably the most nonsensical cinematic gem we’ve seen in a while, so what’s not to like!

AN: Will come back to this. Just wanted to get this prompt done. Super choppy, will probably edit but I’m tired. My sleepy brain says it’s good enough.

They’re in Vegas for their decennial award ceremony. If the others had any say in it, they would be on the other half of the world, sipping cocktails out of coconuts and sunbathing on the crystal-clear beaches. They’re not the host this year though, Joe is, so they’re in Vegas.

Joe knows he wins them over a little bit when they walk into their room. Correction, suite. It’s a two-story villa that has a 24-hour personal butler, a gaming area, a private pool that overlooks the Strip and so much more. He had to reserve the room four years ago just to ensure that they would be able to stay at this place for the week.

Joe’s the first one in the living room as the host. It doesn’t take long for him to set everything up and once he sends the ready text, it only takes another five minutes for them to all come down and join him. Once they’re all settled, Joe begins.

“Lady and Gentlemen, welcome to the 53rd decennial celebration of our existence! As your host for tonight, I would like to thank each and every one of you for joining me in the wonderful city of Las Vegas.”

“This wasn’t our choice,” Booker points out. Unhelpfully, in Joe’s humble opinion.

“Now that we have our nominees, it’s time to announce the winner.” Joe pulls the first envelope out of his jacket pocket. “And the winner for Most Embarrassing Technological Mistake is…” he flips open the card that was inside and wow, he didn’t expect that one. “Sebastien Le Livre! Congratulations Sebastien, please come up here to claim your reward.”

Joe tosses the card and envelope to the side to pick up the first prize. He hands it to Booker, “For people who cannot be trusted with technology.”

Booker holds the prize up, a puzzled expression on his face. “This is a rock.”

“It is,” Joe agrees. “Anybody you want to thank?”

Booker looks at the black rock in his hand, looks back up at them and shrugs. “I guess I want to thank Dianna? This wouldn’t have been possible without you.”

Joe gently pats Booker on the back, “Thank you, Sebastien. Please go take a seat.”

“That was impressive,” Andy admits when Booker is back in his seat and takes another sip of her drink. “Did you pull a muscle trying to smile?”

“Fuck you,” he responds, stealing her drink. He’s smiling into the glass though, doing a lousy attempt of dodging out of the way as Andy reaches over to ruffle his gelled back hair. “Alright! Alright! The next category is going to be announced and I want to beat you again.”

Andy rolls her eyes, giving him one last pat before sitting back into her spot, ready for whatever Joe was going to throw at them next.

I know that a lot of you are, as the ancient proverb says, always sluts for the Eurovision music festival so I’m gonna make a micro rant now --

So in Italy we’ve just had the Sanremo music festival which is like a cultural milestone of Italy, back when there was 1 tv channel the entire country stopped to watch it, it was the Big Event Of Television, this year was the 70° edition and while it had lost popularity some years back now it has risen in popularity again also thanks to appealing to young people, featuring rappers, not treating women like decorative objects etc etc. This edition was nice, I watched a good part of it and, while many of the songs weren’t very great, the festival in itself was pleasant, there was even some queerness sprinkled in it which I appreciated, including my favorite singer being a guest star every night of the festival and also making a little monologue about the fact that “happiness is not a privilege but a right” (meaning that queer people have a right to live as themselves in the open, it’s a theme in some of his songs) and that no person is wrong/a mistake. But I’m babbling.

The problem is that the winner of the Sanremo festival is chosen by a mix of people’s vote and jury vote, and it’s usually the most “yeah this is a nice song performed well” song out there. Which is, like, fine. In fact it’s like what it’s supposed to happen... Except that at some point in history it has been decided that the winner of Sanremo is automatically the Italian candidate to the Eurovision, but Eurovision has a totally different vibe!!

Like, all respect to Mr Nice Song who won the festival and deserved all the praise and prizes and whatnot and also had a very nice jacket last night, I’m not hating on him he’s cute and the song is alright

but the universe clearly intended for this guy to be a candidate for the Eurovision festival. Like, his song wasn’t great but who cares about the song, not the Eurovision audience. C’mon. This is the guy who is supposed to be at the Eurovision, follow me
