shout out to Amphibia for, when one of the main villains feels regret and remorse for his actions and decides he’s done doing terrible things, A. also having him acknowledge that his past actions make him irredeemable and B. having the protagonist, who sees and hears the villain express regret and surrender, still land the finishing blow. Most people don't have any understanding of what has been lost in Lahaina Town. Not just lives and property, but an entire town.
Most people hear "a city/town in Hawaii" and they picture probably resorts. And there are plenty of resorts nearby. But those are all fine.
Lahaina was an old whaling town dating back to the original colonization by white settlers. Before white people arrived, it was the capital of the island, where the high chief ruled, including Kamehameha the Great. The buildings are old, wooden, and crowded together. Obviously that was a problem in the face of the insanely fast wildfire.
But these weren't mansions, Mc or otherwise. It was a tourist town, a destination for cute, spendy shopping and dining, full of art galleries. (OMG THE GALLERIES. There was so much ART lost. There was original Dr. Seuss art in one gallery when I was there in January. That's gone now. Etc.)
But the people who lived and worked in Lahaina were mostly working class, working retail and restaurant jobs, living in old apartments and small houses. Lots of elderly, lots of non-white in a wide range of ethnicities, old hippies who have been there since the 60s and 70s. Yeah they were probably a little better off than people who drive in from other places to work in West Maui, at least because their property was high value, if they owned. But they lived without A/C, hung their laundry on lines, biked to work, called in sick to go surfing when the waves were up. There was a Chinese cultural center and a Buddhist temple, two different structures, if that tells you anything. Multiple museums housing historic items and cultural centers.
And the town will be rebuilt, in some form, I imagine. Or re-developed, more likely. People who are now homeless, who can't afford to rebuild or pay for two residences while the recovery happens will be bought out by deep pocketed developers. If they rebuild Lahaina Town I'm afraid it will be Lahaina Town tm by Disney.
Another fake paradise for tourists with lava rock from the Big Island. Another bit of Hawaii swallowed by capitalism and climate change.
I'm not painting everything about Lahaina as it was as perfect. Front Street was an often gaudy display of brand names and hucksters out to shovel in the tourist dollars. And of course the politics of Hawaii are incredibly complex and fraught in so many ways. I'm just a mainlander haole. I will never live on the islands, despite my family there constantly asking me to move. But I've spent more time there than anywhere I haven't lived, almost all of that time in West Maui.
My mom works in a building that is not there anymore. She just described that job to me as "the last job she'll ever have" as she's 79 and very happy with working two days a week selling t-shirts to cruise ship people. My brother has worked in a gallery on front street for the last ten years.
I don't know. A city of almost 15,000 permanent residents is just gone. 50 or so are confirmed dead, in some horrific circumstances from what I hear.
My mom says people are just walking around with thousand-yard-stares, aimless, clutching cell phones trying to get signal (there isn't any, but you can get lucky and get a call through. Some texts are going in but not out.)
So I don't know folks. Keep those people in your thoughts. If you can donate, I think this may be a good place because it's going to lots of local orgs on the ground: https://www.hawaiicommunityfoundation.org/maui-strong
I keep thinking of new sad things.
Anyway I'm going to leave you with a picture I took while strolling down Front Street one evening.

it's really very simple. you have The Muppets, not to be confused with The Muppets (movie), which is not to be confused with The Muppet Movie or the "The Muppets(TM)", which is the Disney brand The Muppets and The Muppets were produced under. not confusing at all

My hot take has always been that Lord of the Rings, and honestly all of Tolkien’s work, should already be in the public domain. There is literally no good reason it isn’t. If it hadn’t been for Disney changing copyright law to benefit corporations it’s already would be. And I think that’s done a lot of harm to lotr as a sorry?
Like… how many diverse adaptations of Lord of the Rings would we already have if it were in the public domain? How much good genuinely meaningful art have we already missed out on?
Idk I think nothing good ever comes of a story turning into a tightly controlled Brand(tm) controlled by megacorporations whose only concern is profit, and I just I wish everyone was allowed to do their own takes on middle earth.

notes on the owl house, season 1
was gonna do a sequence of liveblogs but then??? i got really into it??? so i guess the most important tl;dr is that yes lesbians you were right this time
S01E01
*watches first scene, where a single brown mother gives her kid a brochure for Conformity Camp with a cartoonish image of a child being crowded into a box, when her kid has already been established as being comically and cartoonishly imaginative, while a flock of doves fly into the air spelling out the words THIS IS A JOKE PLEASE DO NOT MAKE A DISCOURSE ABOUT THIS*
*pauses episode*
*gently and reverently rests finger on screen* a discourse happened here
i knew that Wendie Malick voices Eda before i started and thought i'd properly girded my loins and yet every time she opens her mouth i think she's gonna tell Luz she's punishing Luz for being alive
S01E03: gotta say i'm appreciative of this show's policy of "NO BOYS ALLOWED" unless the boys are the LITTLEST GUYS IN THE WORLD in which case "SON BOY ALLOWED"
S01E05
it's weird that the Adora in this show has Catra's haircut
wait
siSTER???
i guess kudos for subverting my expectations but between this and Frozen what is it with Disney properties courting the Incest Yay people
was the thought that since Eda and Lilith are Old(tm) it wouldn't happen this time because. uhhhhhh
i guess since Catradora was NebulaGamora you could argue Dana Terrace was just returning the trope to old familial roots??? bah i'm not gonna think about this anymore. Lilith def cursed Eda tho
spotted: Amity Blight and her best frenemy Luz Noceda dueling over the last open spot to the Magic Yale welcome luncheon!!!! xoxo GossipWitch
S01E07
not only does Amity have siblings her siblings are VEX AND VAX??? what is happening
Amity: you're a bully Luz!!!! i would know, because i call myself that in the mirror every morning!!!! not because i'm self aware though. it's to pump me up for another day of Bratz the Movie level shenanigans
wow this enemies-to-lovers is turning around fast. i was expecting Amity to at least girlboss if not gaslight but she barely got to gatekeep before being all "i guess :) we both learned something today :)"
yes Amity Luz accidentally hurting your precarious sense of self once is definitely the same as you tormenting Willow for years
S01E12
oh i've seen this Steven Universe episode.
*sees the monster* and so have the storyboarders
why is everyone so mean to Hooty :(
seriously tho i get having one person in the friend group that everyone inexplicably dislikes is a comedy standard or whatever but. it feels out of place for a show that otherwise bellows "it's great to be weird!!!" from the rooftops
Hooty never did nothing to nobody!!! except be all powerful and occasionally asking to be included in shenanigans
on the other hand given King's design they had to work REALLY hard for me to dislike him, but wow! it's definitely paid off, he's the worst
this is the third episode in a row where King's plot is that he has to learn a lesson about not being Disney-brand-selfish and i know this didn't happen but i'm suddenly imagining the world where he eventually takes over as the main character and The Owl House became Disney's answer to Teen Titans Go
S01E13: okay fine King reaching Todd Chavez levels of shenanigans in this episode was good. he can stay
S01E14: MAYBE THEY SHOULD CALL IT SHAPESHIFT LAND. BECAUSE IT'S A LAND WHERE YOU GO TO SHAPESHIFT
S01E15
can i just say that. naming a powerful-but-overlooked witch--who is the BFF to the main character, who thrives on both a) The Hubris and b) The Resentment--Willow is. well no harm in wearing your influence on your sleeve i guess
she does plant magic! it's not like they could have called her Glimmer
i can't believe Amity was made to end her friendship with Willow by CAITLIN GLASS'S SHADOW LAUGHING ON A WALL
*Amity pulls on Skara's invitation like she's gonna rip it apart* NO AMITY THAT'S AN ACTUAL BUTTERFLY
Amity: i'm not actually gonna rip it because it's a real butterfly, but you get the gesture, right?
me: ...fine. FINE
>:(
*watches Amity release the butterfly invitation as a symbol of overcoming her past self* wow. trans Amity confirmed
all the Blight kids are trans actually the twins transed and nobody even made a fuss bc their parents are terrible and Amity is a fourteen year old with youngest most specialest child syndrome
S01E16
Amity: i can't fight my worst fear because it's SO EMBARASSING
me: Amity if it's the one where you fail a test and then your mother shows up and calls you fat i guarantee everyone in school has already guessed
i guess we're just getting everybody's mommy issues huh
Luz's greatest flaw is how hard she commits to the bit, truly the ADHD representation we need
like it has literally not occurred to her that she could change course with what to tell Camila at any time. she chose her path and it's the only one for her now forever
oh Amity's greatest fear isn't even the obvious mom thing!! it's that Luz might turn her down!!! that's so fucking stupid Amity never ever change
S01E17
the recurring potshots at JoRane's intellectual property this season sure are.
this was produced and came out during the years she went public about losing her fucking mind, so like. everyone had to deal with it in the way they felt was appropriate. i'm not really out to judge the exact timbre of one's response so long as said response does not align with her bigotry, and i sympathize with the petty joy of belittling something owned by somone hateful, especially if that something once meant a lot to you...
i guess i'm just not super comfortable with it because a) you're still picking at a wound even if you end up making funny shapes out of the scabs, b) these hot takes are about general magic-school tropes but often are so specifically about her it feels like we're giving her credit for creating them, and c) owning her like this feels like an opiate when the real issue isn't that her fictional society is founded on 11 year olds taking one uquiz, or that the fake sport she made up is hideously unbalanced, it's that she's...the leader of hate group
all of which are misgivings i have about the Disney Corporation as well and i get that people don't watch this show to be REMINDED that we live in a society, so like. whatever i'm gonna stop talking about this
that Amity sure is gay amirite! she went from "mostly bormal about her obvious crush" to "Jodie Foster at the Golden Globes" in the span of one episode
S01E18
wow!!! Hooty saved everyone's bacon by being all-powerful. thank you Hooty sorry your squatters just take you for granted
oh hey Hordak
the fact that Willow and Gus immediately figured out what Luz was up to because of the helpful diagrams she drew for her non-plan is just so. i'm love them, actually
LILITH??? cursed Eda???? what an unexpected turn of events
okay yes Eda sacrificing her soul to her chronic illness for Luz provoked some genuine emotion from my flinty irreverent heart
it was just the emotional climax of Brave with a Last Agni Kai color scheme but hey i cry during the emotional climax of Brave, so
S01E19
is King...not sad his momowner is about to die??? i get that Luz is the focus here but it's weird that he's not even a little bit distraught
um
Lilith
oh my god what
what????
you really think someone would do that??? just ESTABLISH A FASCIST STATE AND TELL LIES????
Lilith how the fuck did you become the head of the secret police when you're like THIS
MINDWIPED WILLOW HAD MORE DEDUCTIVE SKILLS, LILITH
i thought there'd be SOME fascist ideology buy-in like cursing Eda made her scared of Power without Discipline or something but she's...only here??? because this one thing Hordak said he'd do???? HE DIDN'T EVEN PINKIE SWEAR LILITH
like yes yes i know. "cop older sister fails upwards and yikes her way into defending her genocidal boss" I KNOW the only way she could be more my type is if she had dyed her hair white, but i can't pay attention to any of that bc i'm too distracted by the logic-defying stupidity
Lilith when you ditched your glasses for your Goth makeover did you just. never get contacts??? because the only reason i can think of for even you blithely sailing past every red flag is that you were literally too blind to see them
i just
i can't believe i thought Winter Schnee was the purest encapsulation of "in my defense your honor i really am the dumbest bitch alive" when Lilith was there all along
i guess her existence is a powerful statement that MILFs can be morons too
*Luz confronting Lilith and displaying a level of anger that's probably supposed to be unsettling* oh my god Luz YES GET HER PUT HER OUT OF HER FUCKING MISERY
Lilith: i just don't understand why even after i've restrained and assaulted them no one believes i just want to have a civil conversation :(
tHIRTY YEARS????
like yes okay i'm sure there are some profound implications here we can draw about grooming and abuse and sunk cost fallacies but i just
Lilith: i was on the fence about cursing my sister, but when i asked for the Emperor's advice he said "god forbid women do anything."
Luz:
Lilith: i'm realizing now that was bad advice. and that he probably meant it in a different, even worse way than how i interpreted it.
but don't worry gang! her solution to fixing all the evil she's been complicit in is to...uh, continue being complicit in the evils! it's the best way to ensure that the incredibly specific scenario that befell Eda and herself will never!!! happen!!! again!!!
quick Lilith, Hordak just ensnared you in tentacles! this is a perfect opportunity for you to show exactly how you're going to prevent "~this" from ever happening ag--oh she's gone
Eda, finding out Lilith didn't actually mean to curse her forever and this was all her sister's incredibly weird way to make amends: what kind of fucking mORON--wait actually this makes perfect sense
Eda honey obviously i love you for trying to shield your sister and petson from petrification but i don't think Lilith noticed you did that
given the established buffer speed of her brain i'm not sure she's even put together that the owlbeast and her sister are the same person
okay okay i'll move on
:') Luz you brave darling sunflower you've never done anything wrong ever in your life and i'm glad you committing to the bit saved the day, even if it came at such a high price
not sure you'll be taking home the coveted gold for Committing to the Bit tho, now that your witch-aunt has revealed herself as the undisputed champion of Blindly Committing to the Bit for the thirtieth consecutive ye--OKAY YES WE'RE NOT BEATING THIS DEAD HORSE ANYMORE
because i do want to take this show seriously, and nothing demonstrates "i'm gonna take responsibility for my own actions now" better than using your literal body to bear some of the harm you inflicted on others. it's a very nice way to bring their relationship full circle, and it resonates with other instances when characters are forced to stop defining themselves by outside standards and embrace what they're already good at.
(and what Lilith is good at is soothing the pain of others via self-harm! which i think is the point the Helen's-Type-Generator starts emitting confetti and oily black smoke)
is this the first instance of magic having a cost or rebound in this world? beyond "whew i did a lot of magic today, i'm tired?" hm
Dana Terrace really went "i'm gonna give the whump enthusiasts everything they want" with this trope huh
Going Forward
yes i liked it yes i know the second season is more heavily serialized yes i will watch that soon
this did make me think about how all seriality in TV these days seem to be about building up to one series-wide showdown as opposed to different seasons having their own mytharcs, but that has less to do with this show specific and more with the death of television as a medium and we ain't got time for that
given how much my exposure to this show beforehand was Lumity (to the point where i wasn't sure there were other characters besides Eda) i'm...kinda surprised at how sparse Amity's presence was in this season. i liked what we did see of her, but i went in expecting a lot more antagonism for a lot longer in that dynamic
but i guess that's tied in with this season not having much in the way of antagonism until the very end, and not-Hordak seems to be the only one actually invested in his whole world order. we don't have any sympathetic true believers, which I assumed would be Lilith and/or Amity? i guess neither Shadow Weaver nor Catra really gave a shit about the Horde's ideology either, but Shadow Weaver remained an unrepentant ball of spite until the end and it didn't really matter that Catra didn't give a shit about the Horde because the Horde was the only thing she knew. in contrast Amity and Lilith's ties to the existing system feel very shallow--in the latter case so much so it kind of boggles my willing suspension of disbelief?
i suppose the next season can change that, i know new characters get introduced so--
oh wait is that what's gonna happen to the bad sad twink
i've only seen his armor but given how many AO3 fics seem to be about him i'm just gonna assume that he's a bad sad twink
wait can i call someone a twink when he's probably in his early teens like the rest of the cast?
is there discourse about this i hope not
don't make me break out the flock of doves

so i can’t stop thinking about placing the high school musical characters in a riverdale au of sorts. obv i would like it to be less racist than riverdale (& hsm for that matter) & there’s no way in hell i’m writing sex scenes of kids so that would differ, & i think there’s a certain amount of inherent ooc-ness involved in such a tone shift, but, the generational legacies & trauma, the murder mystery, the monstrosity of systemic homophobia… *benoit blanc voice* it compels me.
i know a lot of people’s perception of riverdale is grittiness for the sake of grit, but what i’m drawn to & would be interested in trying to emulate is how the larger-than-life quality resonates with how i perceived adolescence, how intense every emotion becomes in that pressurized canister of oppression. if i’m in full “was only allowed to watch disney channel growing up” mode i would even argue that hsm is a spiritual precursor of sorts to riverdale, in the way that all odes to one’s medium of choice are part of the same lineage: for hsm, well, high school musicals, & for riverdale, horror films + comic books.
anyway! i was originally gonna make this poll about whether i should do it but who am i kidding, autism works in mysterious ways, i’m gonna write it regardless. however in order to Manage My Expectations TM (or most optimistically to find fellow people who are this particular brand of bizarre??) i am still creating an interest poll, so, let me know if you’re interested! if you want to be tagged when i eventually start posting the fic or would like to chat about it feel free to let me know in the tags/replies or send an ask/dm!

on a related note i also love (no) how disney discarded all the extended universe bullshit i assume because of how out of control and messy as well as cheap and stupid it all mostly was (a new starting point for the brand if you will. shame we lost such invaluable cultural gems. like. luuuke. jizz music. the… lightsaber fighting styles lmao. the backstory for every guy who appeared in one frame. embarrassingly puerile retroactive lore building. so many glup shittos and so many riveting wookiepedia pages lost, terribly sad) but now only a few years after the grand premiere of the New star wars tm they made such a show about… we are literally back to palpatine clones and churning out low quality I KNOW WHO THAT IS content lol

Thinking about brands and the power of disney as a brand and my own professional life and what I've tied myself to and maybe how it has a similar power but in a very different way and how choices led me to one but not the other and how that will stick with me the rest of my life and also how possibly tomorrow I'll find out if I got a massive promotion or Not (tm) and what that all means for the rest of forever hmmm hmmm hmmm

Trust The Fungus
This is a review ramble thing of The Super Mario Bros Movie (the 2023 one, not the one from 30 years earlier the title is joking about, but more on the 1993 one later). There will be spoilers.
(You will see me using the word "cringe" a lot in this. Disclaimer: I do not actually believe in cringe culture at all in the slightest in ANY form, it's just a useful shorthand for a special sort of deep revulsion within the soul. Anyway.)
So like, we all went into this expecting cringe because Illumination, right? The animation studio that peaked with their FIRST MOVIE, Despicable Me, and has put the low in lowbrow ever since. The animation studio who actively animates on the cheap for profit margins. Those guys.
But I, to start, want to report there are minimal amounts of cringe! Sure, "look at us, we're adorable" was cringe in the trailers and it's cringe here. Sure Mario hating mushrooms was a specific flavor (mushroom flavored?) of unnecessarily ironic that made me roll my eyes a bit even when the REST of the unnecessarily ironic humor didn't. But overall, it was good! Honestly I genuinely liked this movie a lot!
You probably haven't heard of Monster Hunter: Legends Of The Guild, a low-budget animated Monster Hunter movie Capcom quietly pushed to Netflix when the live-action one turned out to be shit. I always thought that one wasn't that great as a movie on its own but unlike the live action one was fantastic at actually being a MONSTER HUNTER movie - sort of an inverse of the Dark Knight Trilogy's modern "good movie bad Batman movie" reputation. This one is honestly quite similar, even though I at least personally think it stands on its own better than Monster Hunter: Legends Of The Guild does.
A large part of this is one of the movie's biggest strengths: the fanservice. And no I don't mean "Princess Peach in a bikini" fanservice. I mean THE LORE. There is soooooo much Mario lore here, and Nintendo homages, and different characters popping up left and right.
Every time I saw a reference or cameo I, like many, was like
Tumblr media
And that in a way being the main draw over the plot and characters WOULD be kind of a bad thing but it's just so much fun and there's so many of them I don't care. On a related note everything's so on brand, it again genuinely feels like a MARIO movie. We all know Nintendo's kind of the Disney Lite of the video game world in terms of being overly controlling - lost ROM sites and fan projects and such sure are testament to that huh - but here it kind of worked in their favor because they very obviously kept Illumination in line. You can bet your bottom dollar that Shigeru Miyamoto poured over every frame of this movie and if there was something he didn't like it got the Paper Mario treatment.
Granted, we do start the movie with the Mario Bros living in real-world (if Nintendofied) Brooklyn, a take Nintendo is still apparently okay with despite Odyssey kinda sorta retconning it, and we see the Mario Bros having JOBS and a (a VERY Italian American, can confirm) FAMILY and it all feels akin to my gender and body dysphoria (Charles Martinet is Mario's dad though, that's really cute) but also it makes sense for the story they're trying to tell and it doesn't last long.
I should talk about the cast. I was pretty chill with how everyone did. Sure they shouldn't have been stuntcasted this fucking hard in the first place. Sure Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong took some growing on me. Sure I have noted Sociopolitical Problems with Crisp Rat and they should have cast literally anyone who is less Problematic(tm). Burt everyone did fine for what they were.
(Also say what you will about the Ironic(tm) humor, despite that kind of stuff Mario and Luigi's relationship feels real and genuine and I am here for it. I'm normally not THAT into same-gender sibling relations because that's not what I grew up with and NOW the gender situation is complicated but c'mon, they were cute.)
Also Jack Black got to sing. That alone made this movie worth seeing for me. The music was SUPER good when it's stuff like Bowser's singing and the cool remixed Mario tracks. The licensed music was a lot less necessary and in one case apparently replaced a perfectly good Donkey Kong remix  and almost all of it could have been cut... Aside from the I Need A Hero sequence, that was inspired.
Speaking of Bowser. I like that they basically nudge nudge hint hint at Mario and Peach being an item but never actually do anything about it (just like the games!) whereas Bowser is UNDENIABLY horny on main for Peach and sees Mario as competition (also just like the games!) . Speaking of the references, they even use Bowser and Peach's Odyssey wedding outfits, which is cute.
(Also can we make Girlboss Peach game canon please?)
This movie does have a sense of... "This world operates on video game logic. We will try to explain it but we will not JUSTIFY it" and I think that's neat. At first I thought that was a factor as to why this movie was less popular with critics than fans, but I went with my mostly non-gamer family (more on them later) and not only could they follow it fine, my mom told me after the movie she understood video games and video game logic BETTER after seeing this movie so I dunno.
I will say. For a movie that is trying to distance itself from and replace the 1993 one as much as possible there are a lot of funny parallels. The Brooklyn origins leading to a secret portal beneath the city, Bowser's minions trying to isolate and strand our heroes, having One Toad In Particular help our heroes, the funky ass cars/karts, the princess of choice being more serious and also an isekai victim, the final fight being taken BACK to Brooklyn...  It's amusing.
But overall I had fun. I want to see it again. I went to see it with my family and they enjoyed it too. Though if I had a nickel for every time a video game movie I saw on my birthday with my family that had a wedding scene that gets memed on by said family due to an upcoming wedding in said family I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twice. Damn. Now I want Hollywood movies for every major Nintendo franchise that hasn't gotten one. And by "major" I mean "important enough to get into Smash". ROB and Game And Watch movies when? (More seriously I want Zelda and Fire Emblem and full-length Pikmin movies. God please.)

I dislike most of the Disney live action remakes. They are obnoxious. Lindsay Ellis did an excellent video essay you can find on YouTube about the way Disney addresses and “fixes” issues and “plot holes” from the original movies that were never issues to begin with, (while ignoring the actual issues that aren’t as simple to address) in order to make sure their Disney Princess brand (tm) still feels up to date and woke so people will still buy the shit for their kids. I hate it and it’s stupid.
I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in a Little Mermaid remake, and honestly I shudder a bit to think of how they’re probably going to ham-fistedly “fix” it and make it more “feminist” and make Ariel a Strong Independent Woman who Don’t Need No Man, cause all you bitches complained about Ariel’s arc being based all around a man right? This will make the movie Woke (tm) right? or something like that. Cause they’ve done it with every single stupid remake they’ve done, and they’ll do it with this, too.
But damn if I’m not having the best fucking time watching people lose their goddamned shit over a black mermaid. I am loving this. People are having legit baby temper tantrums over it and it is HILARIOUS. I will never pay money to go see this movie but I am glad they’re making it, cause it is making people SO MAD.

Yeah if we compare them, they deliver the message they want but one is more blunt, for sure! Like "For the love of a daughter' 'Father' are very Demi songs!
I don't really see many artists writing like Demi tbh even if she, at this point, has worked ALL MY NERVES!
What matters to me is that i grew up with too young songwriters, that feel EVERYTHING and have very relatable issues and were never scared to write the fuck of a song!
For exemple, i'm closer to Lorde's age than Taylor and Demi's (i stared following them cause of Disney) and in my time in High School Pure Heroine was a recent album and i love me some Lorde but i never found her relatable, i bop to her music and get it but like never connected!
Exactly, and like I think even comparing their songs about death (I made a post a few months ago about how Dead Friends was hitting hard because sometimes what you're feeling is as blunt as "I miss my dead friends"), Ronan is sad but almost plays into whimsical nostalgia and feels very artistic whereas Dead Friends almost feels like you're literally reminiscing/talking with Demi and being like "damn, I really took for granted how short life is and now I miss not only the times we had but the times we won't". And I'm sure there's a ton of reason for the differences including ages of the dead ones, writing styles and whatever, but it's just so interesting to me that the same concept can be written about in such different ways and still be as good as one another.
As a side note, not to be on brand(tm) for me, but if you're looking for someone who does a mix of this, I'd recommend Kate Miller-Heidke who has songs like Words and What Was I To You (which are like the blunt versions of Dear Reader and All Too Well [especially the 10 minute version] respectively) but also the whimsical and more metaphorical songs like The Last Day On Earth and Space They Cannot Touch.
And I agree with the relatability stuff (though I do relate to Lorde's last two albums, but just Pure Heroine as much). Like obviously a song can be good without relatability, but I think for me to willingly listen to a song over and over, I need to have some connection to it. Circling back to SZA, that's why Seek & Destroy is my favourite from SOS, because while I don't relate to it now, it took me back to 2018 when a non romantic relationship of mine fell apart and for a long time that's how I felt. And while I understand that people go to music for different reasons, that's the beauty of music for me.

one of the funniest things about Disney's handling of The Muppets(TM) is that "muppet", as a term, just refers to any puppet made by the Jim Henson company. the thing is though that unlike Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, etc., Jim never really gave the Muppet Show a name beyond just "The Muppet Show". so in recent years Disney has been trying so hard to push The Muppets(TM) as a brand name and it's like that scene in Mean Girls

*"Beyond Gurus," - By Nancy Cooke Herrera,
was an awesome book David Farley Kaplan- my Jewish Monk Godfather turned fiance sent me on Maharishi's TM "Mother Divine" when I was 21yo and took a year away from the "Dick" as a renunciate.(:
I gave up app my college/travel party habits. It was Heaven. (BTW my ™ copyright appears to be shrinking again in latest apartheid politics and Gag orders.) ):
Sister Linda- also sponsored by DFK - whom our sisters secretly referred to as "Deek," for his low balling negotiations on Spitual Center eternal- didn't love book. Yet all the ladies were curious and devoured it. Who Wouldn't love great Yogis and teachers? #IKR (Isha Kyan Rawal's initials- also a Buddha Sattva- whom needs his mother immediately. As does his sister and every estranged child crying in hlobe.) Nothing is Beyond Mothers.

**"Sisters Of My Heart," is one of my favorite Chitra Divakaruni books. She is listed with my dream agent Sandra Dykstra.
I reference this mythology in many of my songs and poems.
*** It's considered generally "HOT" by sisterhood & resoundingly noble way Influencer & selfie queen of digital era Paris Hilton goes up to bat for #FreeBritney
Mamma Paris closed conservatorships and academies that cage kids; despite lame brands pimped by Walmart & Disney etc.
We see you.
