rewatching the muppets (2015) is so funny because I’ll be like “oh I remember there are some rlly funny bits actually!! it had so much potential!” and then I watch it and just go

“gonzo has. gonzo has parents? what is this universe because that would solve a lot of questions and character points that I actually don’t want to be solved”

“aw yeah no walter :( he’d be so sad he wasn’t in this”

“pls don’t be a misogynist like that *character I love*”

“I HAD ALMOST MANAGED TO BLOCK OUT THE FACT THEY TRIED TO STRAIGHTIFY SCOOTER”

#the whole show feels like a tug of war between writers and concepts to me #like some people knew these characters and some people didn’t and just wanted drama for the abc viewers #*sigh* american television #I don’t hate the 2015 show for the record #like it is funny and gave piggy so many cool character moments that she needed #and it was made during a time when lgbt characters were just starting to be prioritised on television #so bunsen and beaker could just exist and be gay a bit more bluntly #scooter could gay panic. pepe could be bi #but they messed up on a few levels #can u tell I have thoughts #but this is mostly a ghosts blog so I’ll hush now #the muppets #the muppets 2015 #the muppets abc #muppets

Another thing I’ve realised I like about the Muppets: the characters have aged.

Maybe not at the same pace as the performers (some of whom are still puppeteering them all these decades later!) but they’ve lived their lives together.

Kermit’s heavily implied to be in his late middle age from Muppets (2011) onwards. He’s so tired, all the time. Gonzo worries that his body can’t take the punishment it used to these days and that people will forget his stunt work (the 2015 sitcom). Fozzie struggles to find love as an older bear. Pepe secretly worries his prime is behind him and it’s too late for him to crack the Hollywood A-list scene. And Piggy, of course, is afraid she’s losing her looks.

But again, they’re struggling, but they struggle together. None of this brings them down for long because they have each other. They forget that sometimes, but always find their way back to each other.

People didn’t seem to like the definitely-not-for-kids 2015 sitcom, where the Muppets are all in midlife-crisis mode, hard-drinking, weirdly horny, kind of self-destructive and almost falling apart, but in some ways it’s the most wholesome and nuanced presentation of the characters.

Kermit and Piggy are going through a protracted divorce. Kermit’s seeing another pig, Piggy has a different beau on her arm every episode. At the same time they’re trying to produce a primetime chat show. Things are fraught and volatile and look like they might implode and rip this little showbiz family of Muppets apart. But Kermit and Piggy are lifelong friends and they eventually learn to put that friendship first and to support each other through the heartbreak of the end of their marriage.

They got old together, and while life may have killed their romance, it hasn’t killed their love.

I want to make a quick post about my thoughts on muppets abc bc I made a very positive post about it when I first watched it last year and I feel like I should clarify some things:

I really like the show. I think it’s hilarious, I like the focus it gave certain characters, and I think it did a good job of ‘modernizing’ the muppets as a brand without leaning too hard into social media or modern internet use commentaries. I don’t know if that last point makes sense but yeah I really really enjoy the show.

HOWEVER it does absolutely have a lot of problems, mostly in the characterization of certain muppets. Scooter was pretty much character assassinated, Sam eagle was pretty weird at times, miss piggy has been heavily flanderized. It can range from not super noticeable to unwatchable from episode to episode but yep it’s bad!

I will say I don’t totally agree with a lot of the over sexualized or too adult criticisms, it may be personal taste but I kinda like a lot of the more adult humor for the most part. I think it’s an interesting route to take for the franchise that is so often made way too childish in recent years.

None of these are new takes lol this has all been said about the show before I just felt the need to clear my conscience. I AM a muppets abc enjoyer but I also recognize that it’s not always great as a muppets property
