2019 BMW X7 Prototype Review: BMW’s First True Three-Row SUV
BMW, the Bavarian company built on a reputation of driving dynamics, has completed one of its biggest challenges to date: the development of a huge, three-row SUV that still drives like a BMW.
The 2019 BMW X7 easily becomes the biggest beast in the BMW lineup. Offered as a six- or seven-passenger SUV, it was designed to keep customers from heading to other automakers when they want a full-size family vehicle. Despite having a seven-seat option, at best the X5 is really a 5+2 and will remain so until the introduction of the X7 as the true 7-seater.
When it goes on sale in the first quarter of 2019, the X7 will join one of the most profitable segments of the market – especially so in the lucrative U.S., China, Russia and the Middle East. The X7 will also be sold in parts of Europe but its sheer size makes navigating the Continent’s narrow rural roads a harrowing experience. It is late to the big-SUV party in the U.S., but it could still account for 40-50 percent of the brand’s global sales.
BMW first showed the X7 as a concept at the 2017 Frankfurt auto show where its sheer mass was almost off-putting, and the kidney grille downright intimidating. The production model is expected to be shown in November at the Los Angeles Auto Show, which is roughly the time production models will start rolling off the line at the Spartanburg, S.C., plant that will be the sole source of the SUV.
Motor Trend was invited to an early test drive of prototypes wrapped in camouflage, with yards of felt covering interior features. So we will tell you all we can, with the proviso that we did not see or experience everything and that these were early builds, subject to change and improvement prior to sale.
New architecture key
The secret to the new X7 is that it rides on the same CLAR flexible architecture that underpins rear-drive cars from the 3 Series to 7 Series and the rear-drive SUVs from the latest X3 to X7. Only the current X5 is not on the new platform but it migrates over with the next-generation X5 coming soon.
Putting X7 on CLAR makes many things possible. It is engineered for a more diverse driving experience from Comfort to Sport as well as off-road capability. CLAR also has the electrical wherewithal to offer more features, many of them driver assist and other safety systems, as well as more advanced connectivity. Sharing underpinnings makes it possible to build the X7 in the Spartanburg plant that also makes the X3, X4, X5, and X6 – which should promote quality while using economies of scale to help reduce cost and keep pricing reasonable.
BMW put its best guys on the X7, a divergence from the usual practice of having a mix of senior engineers mentoring their juniors who are still learning. It is a testament to the importance of getting this vehicle right.
The uptick from X5 to X7 largely parallels the bump from 5 Series to 7 Series. The U.S. will get the 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6 inline-six gas engine that generates 320 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque in the 7 Series and the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 (445 hp/480 lb-ft in the 7 Series). BMW is not yet revealing horsepower or torque figures but engineers say the engines have been updated and optimized for the X7. Europe gets two versions of the 3.0-liter turbodiesel. There are no plans to offer a diesel in the U.S. All are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that has been improved to shift faster and use less fuel.
No diesel or 4-cyl. for U.S. but plug-in hybrid expected
A plug-in hybrid is expected but will not be available at launch. The idea is still the subject of some debate, given that China does not like hybrids. A four-cylinder also makes sense for China, but would not be offered in the U.S. What makes more sense is a V-12 but there has been no confirmation yet. And no talk of an X7 M, although there will be an M performance package offered. Also, there are no plans yet for a coupe (X8) unless there is customer demand, executives say.
The I-6 is the engine BMW has in mind for the U.S. market. Even in a vehicle likely to tip 5,000 pounds, it provides nice, even, smooth acceleration. It is pleasing to listen to, reminding you there is ample power, although not as blunt as the louder and more audacious V-8. Exhaust notes are a combination of the real thing and some sound enhancement.
When the I-6 is not working hard, it is remarkably quiet; sometimes drowned out by some errant wind noise over the hulking X7 body. If the goal is a soothing and comfortable five-hour drive with the family, this engine does the job nicely. The one we drove had 22-inch wheels wearing 315/35 R22 Continental Premium Contact SSR tires.
The V-8 prototype had 21-inch wheels shod with Pirelli P Zero 285/45 R21 Pirelli P Zero tires. The X7 will offer a choice of 20-, 21-, and 22-inch wheels. The V-8 felt and sounded more powerful but somehow the vehicle also felt bigger on the road than the one with the I-6, not ideal in a segment where the goal is to feel smaller and more agile.
Air suspension standard
Like the 7 Series, the 2019 X7 will have a two-axle air suspension standard on all trim levels and body height adjusts up or down 3.1 inches in total. By contrast, the base X5 has steel springs front and back. Also standard on the X7 is Dynamic Damper Control to sop up the road’s imperfections.
The big SUV has BMW’s Integral Active Steering (or X Steer). It felt vague in testing of the 7 Series sedan, and the sensation carries over into our first drive of the X7. It does its job holding a straight line well, but there is no excitement transmitted via the fingertips. It did feel more agile than the vehicles we tried with only two-wheel steering.
We applaud the differentiation between drive modes. Sport lowers the SUV by 0.4 inch, tightens the steering, and immediately raises the decibels on the engine sounds coming into the cabin. Body roll is noticeably reduced in Sport, but on bad stretches of road, the suspension is too stiff and rear-seat passengers feel the bumps the most. Put lids on those sippy cups.
Comfort mode did a much better job of smoothing out the chatter on uneven surfaces and sopping up the bigger bumps on bad pavement. Adaptive mode detects where and how you are driving and adjusts the throttle accordingly. In Eco Pro mode, the suspension stays in comfort, the throttle essentially goes dead, the vehicle finds its glide path and dials down the air conditioning. The dash graphics turn blue and show mpg and battery info—info you will want when a hybrid is added to the lineup.
Off-road ready
All-wheel drive is rear-focused for better steering and cornering but it is a stretch to describe this huge SUV as playful. But the X7 was designed to go off-road. There are terrain modes for sand, gravel, and rock—but not snow. Active anti-roll bars and a limited-slip differential are optional. The off-road package includes more robust skid pads and rear axle lock. We tested the mettle in an off-road park where the X7 did surprisingly well on a packed mud course that articulated the wheels off the ground in places.
Expect a full suite of safety and driver assist systems that brake, steer, and accelerate, with a vibrating steering wheel to warn you when you drift out of the lane. Also likely to appear: an optional camera to monitor the driver’s eyes for signs of fatigue or inattention, especially with autonomous features.
Swarovski crystal
Much of the interior was covered in felt on these prototypes. But in one top-end trim model the gear shift was exposed and, to our surprise, it was trimmed with Swarovski crystal. Also uncovered: the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a second 12.3-inch touchscreen. The X7 has the latest iDrive, a new head up display, rear seat entertainment and connections for gamers and other devices. The sound for the turn signal comes out of the speakers, not the dash.
The X&’s front seats are exclusive to this model—fully adjustable, heated, cooled and offering a massage en route. The 7-passenger version has a bench in the second row, but those who opt for the six-passenger configuration get a second row with the front seats borrowed from the 8 Series, but wider and more comfortable. The third row is also exclusive to the X7, not surprising given this is the first true third row in the lineup. It works for adults but with little room to spare—best to keep the kids back there. And although the second row slides easily to crawl to the back, it is as awkward as every other three row in the segment. All seats can be folded up and down with buttons accessed from the back cargo loading area.
The X7 has a slick two-piece tailgate. Push a button to open just the top or customize it to open top and bottom simultaneously. It can also be opened with the swish of a foot under the rear bumper. Running boards are available and a standard panoramic sunroof provides sunlight for all three rows.
Exact dimensions have not been released but the X7 is about 201 inches long, 79 inches wide and 71 inches high. Weight is about 5,070 pounds. The most direct competition is the Mercedes-Benz GLS that is reaching the end of its lifecycle, the Audi Q7, the Infiniti QX80 which was recently refreshed, and the Lexus LX 570. Even though BMW does not see American automakers as competition, BMW should be wary of the new Lincoln Navigator. BMW expects some 7 Series customers will migrate to the X7, and some X5 buyers will trade up, but the target is conquest buyers.
We are a long way from learning pricing but the 7 Series will remain the priciest vehicle in the portfolio as long as it has the 601-hp 6.6-liter V-12. But if the day comes that the X7 gets the V-12, the price mantle could shift.

Interview with BMW’s Matt Mullins about breaking the BMW M5 Drift Record
On December 11, 2017, Johan Schwartz drifted an F90-generation BMW M5 sedan 232.5 miles around a skid pad at the BMW Performance Center in Greer, SC. It took eight hours of continuous drifting to complete, which is almost difficult to comprehend. That’s the length of your typical work day, except the entire time you’d have to be holding a drift in a 600 hp super sedan. The concentration level to even attempt such a feat is unfathomable to me. On that day, Schwartz set a Guinness World Record for the “Greatest Distance Vehicle Drift” Even more, BMW also broke another world drift record that day for the world’s longest “Twin-Vehicle Drift” (water-assisted), with two BMW M5s drifting 49.25 miles over the course of an hour.
For this, both Schwartz and BMW Performance Center Chief Driving Instructor Matt Mullins drifted new M5s around the skid pad together. But despite how impressive both of those records are, what’s even more impressive is how BMW achieved the longer drift record. To keep a 600 hp V8-powered sedan drifting for eight hours, BMW needed to figure out a way to refuel the car mid-drift. So the F90 M5 driven by Johan had a dry-break fuel system fitted to it an another car had to drive up and connect to it to refuel.
To actually pull this off, Matt Mullins was tasked with driving an F10-generation BMW M5 and matching Schwartz’s drift while a man who was in the back seat of the F10 and suspended by a safety tether, had to connect the fueling system. It’s all very impressive stuff and it drove the internet wild for a few days afterward. So I recently spoke with Matt Mullins about being a part of breaking drifting records and how difficult it was to refuel the main car mid-drift.
BMWBLOG: First, congratulations on the record. How does it feel to have been part of breaking two drifting world records?
Matt Mullins: If feels great. After more than a year and half discussing and planning it’s very satisfying to get the results.
BB: The twin-vehicle drift record you were a part of lasted an hour. I can’t concentrate on something for more than 20 seconds, how hard is it to concentrate on holding a drift for that long?
MM: It was pretty intense drifting in close proximity at the end of a long day of focus. Johan had already been in the car for almost 7 hours and I was coordinating the logistics and doing the refuels.

BB: For the longer eight-hour drift by Schwartz, you were in charge of driving the refueling car. That actually seems like it might be more difficult than actually drifting around. What were the challenges with that/how did they differ from just drifting?
MM: I was the only one of the three of us who could really see the whole picture. Johan couldn’t really see me and Matt Butts [the refuel guy] except for slight glimpse in his mirror. So I was calling the action while working to maintain the distance to Johan’s car.
BB: In the video, we see the two cars bump together a couple of times, were there any really scary moments while trying to refuel the F90 M5?
MM: Yeah, there were a lot of scary moments. At the end of the first refuel. Johan‘s car straightened just a little and I gave him just a little bump…kind of like an assist right? There was one other big bump about 6 and a half hours in when we were attempting the final refuel. We had to bail out and reset and the we got it done. We told the GoPro guys we were creating drama for video. [laughs]
BB: Both of the record-breaking drifts were really long, how many attempts did it take to break the record?
MM: Both records were achieved on the first try.
BB: Even with water-assistance, eight hours is a really long time to spin those rear tires. Was there an issue with tire wear/damage? Also, which tires were the cars running?
MM: The tires on both cars are Continental Extreme Contact Sport. The same set of tires from the drift world records or still on both cars. There’s even some tread left after our big burn out at the end.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla/January 28, 2018(AP)(STL.News)— The Latest at the Rolex 24 at Daytona 2:40 p.m. (all times local)
Action Express Racing has won its third Rolex 24 at Daytona title with an overall victory in the prestigious sports car race.
The win went to Joao Barbosa, Christian Fittipaldi and Filipe Albuquerque.
Chip Ganassi Racing is celebrating the organization’s 200th victory after its Ford GT’s finished first and second in the GT Le Mans class Sunday. The entry of Ryan Briscoe, Richard Westbrook and Scott Dixon earned the class victory.
Many teams had mechanical problems and reliability issues throughout the twice-round-the-clock endurance race. But it was a relatively clean event and that permitted new race records in laps completed and overall distance covered.
The 808 laps beat the record of 762 laps set in 1992. It also bettered the race record of 2,760.960 miles set in 1982. ___
1:45 p.m.
Fernando Alonso has finished his driving time in his first Rolex 24 at Daytona.
His United Autosports team had reliability issues and the two-time Formula One world champion was not in contention for the victory. But he wanted the experience in a sports car endurance race and said his time at Daytona left him with “a positive outcome because I really did enjoy it a lot.”
Alonso said he loved driving about eight hours in the twice-round-the-clock event.
It remains to be seen if Alonso will add the 24 Hours of Le Mans to his 2018 schedule. This race was a test for him to see if he’s ready for the most prestigious sports car event in the world.
Said Alonso: “Very nice event, very nice driving this car. If and when I race Le Mans, it will be the second time (in a sports car) and I will be much more prepared.”
He also said he’d like to return to the Rolex. ____
10:40 a.m.
Joao Barbosa led the Rolex 24 at Daytona with four hours remaining in the endurance race at Daytona International Speedway.
Barbosa is driving a Cadillac for Action Express Racing and the prototype is the only car on the lead lap. Felipe Nasr in the second Action Express Car was the closest competition but down three laps to his teammate.
The race in the GT Le Mans class tightened up when one of the Corvette entries was able to get back on the lead lap. That class is still being dominated by both Chip Ganassi Racing entries. Sebastien Bourdais is leading the class in a Ford GT and teammate Scott Dixon is second.
Cautions have been rare in this race and most team troubles have been through attrition.
Both of Roger Penske’s entries had issues overnight and are out of contention for the race win. But the team owner was still on top of the Team Penske timing stand and fulfilling his promise to watch all 24 hours of the race. ___
8 a.m.
Attrition took its toll overnight at the Rolex 24 at Daytona and there is only one car on the lead lap.
Christian Fittipaldi in a Cadillac for Action Express Racing led the race when daylight broke at Daytona International Speedway.
Defending race champion Wayne Taylor Racing retired to the garage after yet another blown tire caused significant damage to the Cadillac. The team blew a myriad of tires throughout the race.
Helio Castroneves made contact with another car and it put the Team Penske entry 22 laps off the pace.
The second Team Penske Acura is down 24 laps.
The car driven by two-time Formula One world champion is down 26 laps because a brake master cylinder failed about 11 hours into the race.
The GT Le Mans class is still being dominated by the two Ford’s from Chip Ganassi Racing. Only Richard Westbrook and Joey Hand are on the lead lap in that class, and Chip Ganassi has a shot at an eighth Rolex victory between the two cars. ___

Roger Penske’s two new Acura’s are leading the Rolex 24 at Daytona in the team’s return to full-time sports car competition.
Ricky Taylor had the No. 7 Acura out front 10 hours into the endurance race at Daytona International Speedway. Simon Pagenaud was in second behind his teammate in the No. 6 Acura, and there were just three cars on the lead lap.
Penske has vowed to watch the entire 24-hour race from the pit stand.
Taylor was part of last year’s winning team with Wayne Taylor Racing. Driving for his father with his brother as his teammate, the organization won the Rolex and the IMSA championship.
Ricky Taylor then signed with Penske for the new sports car operation, and his debut Saturday was nearly spoiled by the flu. He recovered in time to take his place in the driver rotation as Taylor attempts to win the race for a second consecutive year. ___
12:20 a.m.
IMSA has penalized the Audi of Montaplast by Land Motorsports for an alleged violation of balance of performance. The car had a one lap lead over the competition in the GT Daytona class.
The rule implies that the car has exceeded the baseline performance that IMSA expected from the entry prior to the race. The Audi was brought to pit road and held for five minutes.
Meanwhile, only three cars were on the lead lap nearly 10 hours into the race.
Joao Barbosa was leading the race in a Cadillac for Action Express Racing, and the two Team Penske entries were running second and third in Acuras.
All other cars were at least one lap down from the leaders. ___
12:15 a.m.
Scott Pruett’s final Rolex 24 at Daytona isn’t going the way he had hoped.
The 3GT Racing team was 11th in the GT Daytona class when Pruett finished his first stint in the Lexus on Saturday night at Daytona International Speedway. Pruett has a record-tying five titles in the sports car race at Daytona International Speedway.
He drove a triple stint to start his race, and was due to get back in the car around 5 a.m. If the team is still running at the end of the race, Pruett said he’d like to close his 50-year career behind the wheel.
He’s retiring after this race as the winningest driver in American sports car competition with a record 60 victories. His five Rolex 24 wins are tied for most with Hurley Haywood, and Pruett also won five titles when the series ran as Grand-AM and two championships under IMSA.
Pruett turns 58 in March. He will continue to work with Lexus, the manufacturer he teamed with to help develop and promote the Lexus IS F performance sedan and Lexus LFA supercar in 2008. ___
11:50 p.m.
Continental Tire says the failures in the Rolex 24 at Daytona have been caused by teams who “are pushing the envelope with low pressure and aggressive camber.”
The tire company has seen at least high-profile tire issues through the first nine hours of the twice-round-the-clock endurance race. Defending race-winning team Wayne Taylor Racing had two punctured tires, while United Autosports had one problem on the entry prepared for Fernando Alonso.
Both cars were damaged trying after the tire problems.
Continental Tire representatives say the teams that have had issues are not working within manufacturer parameters. Continental also noted the tires are the same ones that have been used for the past five years without issue. ___
11:20 p.m.
Wayne Taylor Racing headed to the garage just short of the nine-hour mark at the Rolex 24 at Daytona because of damage to the race car from a tire puncture.
Renger van der Zande was behind the wheel when the tire exploded on the Cadillac. The car was damaged as van der Zande tried to get it to pit road.
It was the second tire puncture for the Wayne Taylor team, and Jordan Taylor had to save the car earlier in the race when it failed. The second issue caused too much damage to repair on pit road.
Wayne Taylor Racing is the defending winner of the Rolex. The team won the first five races of last season and the IMSA championship. Ricky Taylor left the team at the end of the year to join Roger Penske’s new sports car effort, and van der Zande was named his replacement.
The Dutch driver won the pole to give Wayne Taylor Racing high hopes of repeating. The car was running third before it headed to the garage. ___
10:20 p.m.
Fernando Alonso’s team fell three laps off the pace after a tire problem caused extensive damage to the car during the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
Phil Hanson was driving the Ligier LMP2 as he closed in on the eight-hour mark of the endurance race at Daytona International Speedway. A tire suddenly exploded on the United Autosports entry, and Hanson had to limp the Ligier to pit road for repairs.
As the team worked to fix the damage and remove the shredded tire, Alonso replaced Hanson behind the wheel.
The team was three laps behind leader Filipe Albuquerque of Action Express Racing when Alonso pulled off pit road. The team was 11th overall ___
10:15 p.m.
The two Ford entries from Chip Ganassi Racing have taken control of the GT Le Mans class in the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
Ganassi is seeking an eighth Rolex victory this year and was the grand marshal for the race that began Saturday at Daytona International Speedway. His two cars had put the rest of the GTLM class at least one lap off the pace seven hours into the endurance race.
Sebastien Bourdais was out front in the No. 66 Ford GT he is co-driving with Joey Hand and Dirk Mueller. The car won its class last year for Ganassi’s seventh victory. The team owner has six overall wins from when he entered cars in the prototype division.
The entry shared by Ryan Briscoe, Richard Westbrook and Scott Dixon was running second in class behind its sister car. The Ganassi organization is seeking its 200th victory in major auto racing.

2017 Genesis G90 Adds Aspirational Luxury to Our Four Seasons Fleet
A Korean luxury car? Does that sound a bit odd to your ear? It might. It wasn’t so long ago that most folks looked a bit askance at Toyota for launching its Lexus brand. And you might not know it, but Hyundai has been building luxury cars for about 8 years now—the Equus and the Genesis. It was the latter model that created a bit of buzz for the company’s more premium efforts, and now that name has spawned its own brand—and a new top-tier model, the G90.
The 2017 Genesis G90’s exterior is, from most angles, a bit of a hodgepodge of other familiar full-size luxury sedans. BMW’s 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz’s S Class definitely feature in the details, but the overall presence is more in line with the current Lexus LS—which is due to be replaced with an all-new model in just a few weeks. Being almost entirely derivative, the G90’s design is very much “inside the box,” but it’s also a pleasant assembly of cherry-picked crowd pleasers, so while it’s not unique, it’s still handsome, especially wrapped in its subtle London Gray paint job. Inside, the story is much the same, with the same relative influences. As an upstart luxury brand, copying the segment leaders might seem like a cop-out, but it may actually be a stroke of genius. Why reinvent the wheel when you can just borrow one?
Where the G90 does make some bold moves is price. At just $71,575 (including delivery fees), our Four Seasons test car comes equipped with no options—because there are none. The only choices you’ll make in choosing your G90 are what sort of engine you’d like (a turbo V-6 or a V-8), whether you’d like rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the car’s exterior color, and, in a few cases, the interior color scheme (most exterior colors offer only one interior color scheme). That’s it. And yet it’s still pretty much loaded.
In addition to a 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine rated at 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive, our Four Seasons 2017 Genesis G90 also includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, a head-up display, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and a host of other electronic safety features. But that’s not all! A 12.3-inch display houses the navigation and infotainment systems, 7.1-channel surround sound blasts through 17 speakers, and Qi wireless charging lets you keep the electrons while cutting the cord. There’s even more standard equipment in the G90 3.3T Premium AWD, but more on that in updates to come.
Copy editor Kara Snow shed some light on those other options, noting of the G90, “As much as Automobile editors love to drive, this one is best appreciated from the back seat. Plenty of legroom, Nappa leather seats, three-zone climate control, power side and rear window shades, and easy power door closure add up to create a cosseted, upscale passenger car.” Associate editor Jonathon Klein, on the other hand, found delight in a feature shared by every car: the front seats. “As far as I’m concerned, the front seats in the G90 are S-Class worthy. They feel as if your posterior is swaddled in the softest of goose down. I could see spending days in those seats without ever getting a cramp or growing weary of the road and the trip.” Online editor Ed Tahaney calls out the G90’s ride comfort as a standout feature, calling it, “A big boat of a car with a ride that reminds me of a early 90’s Chevrolet Caprice. It floats down the highway and bounces like a beach ball when you hit bumps in the road.”
It hasn’t been a perfect honeymoon with our new Four Seasons G90, however. A few gripes have arisen already, with one in particular making the rounds. Klein argues there’s some work to be done on the center console design, saying, “There are too many buttons by a factor of ten. My wife and I started counting one night and found that there are over 113 buttons in the cabin. That has to be a record—and one Genesis may not want to achieve. There are too many single use buttons that could be easily combined or even eliminated.” Tahaney explains why the buttons and layout aren’t ideal: “I haven’t spent too much time in it but it has way too many buttons. The volume control knob is too close to the same size as the A/C knob. Every time I reach over to turn up the volume, I end up screwing with the A/C.”
Toys and design are only part of the luxury sedan equation, however. To hang with the best of today’s top-tier cars, the G90 will need to offer some muscle and some hustle to counter its cool-hand style. We’ll be digging deeper into whether the 3.3-liter turbo V-6 delivers the goods through the course of our year with the G90, but our initial testing shows the car is certainly in the ballpark. With a 4,840-lb weight on our scales, the G90 3.3T AWD scampers to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds, running the quarter mile in 13.9 seconds at 100.3 mph. Fifteen years ago, those would have been pretty solid figures for a mid-range sports car. When it comes to cornering, the G90’s softer side shines through: it managed just 0.86 g of lateral grip on our skid pad, running the figure eight in 25.6 seconds at an average of 0.73 g. To put that in context, the current 740i xDrive hits 60 mph from a standstill in just 5.1 (manufacturer claimed) seconds.

Race Report: Redemption 7 No Prep, Texas Motorplex
The new and highly anticipated format for the Redemption No Prep Series, presented by Scoggin Dickey Raceshop & Parts Center, kicked off at the Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas on May 26th. After several years of hosting independent no-prep events across Texas and Oklahoma, series director Shannon Morgan announced that Redemption will be a four-race points series in 2017, and for the first time, crown champions from among the fourteen class line-up at the end of the season. Word spread like wildfire, and eager racers jumped on the opportunity to chase this four race tour in hopes of claiming the first ever Redemption No Prep Series Championship crown.
The Texas Motorplex would not only host the season opener but the also the season finale October 27-28th. Additional stops at Tulsa Raceway Park on June 30-July 1st and San Antonio Raceway on September 1-2nd will complete the tour. A new feature for Redemption this year is the addition of a 5.80- and 6.50-index class as well as a junior dragster program, in an effort to attract new teams to the no prep scene and showcase the future generation of our sport. Needless to say, those class additions were well received as both index classes sold out at 32 cars in each field and the junior dragster drivers enjoyed their moment in the spotlight at the Motorplex.
With $120,000 up for grabs, more than 260 tech cards were sold. Seven classes were on the bill for Friday night with another seven set for action in Saturday’s main event. The rules were simple: this was an eighth mile contest, no times shown, with an instant green light at the starting line once both cars were properly staged. Burnouts were not permitted past the starting line, and any contact with the wall or crossing of the centerline resulted in immediate disqualification.
True Street was first class up, and after their mandatory thirty mile cruise, cars pulled straight into the staging lanes upon their return to the Texas Motorplex, with twenty minutes to make final preparations for first round. On an extremely fresh and un-groomed racetrack, unfortunate carnage unfolded quickly during the opening round.
In the third pair of cars down the track, the “First Lady of True Street” Lea Ochs went for a wild ride in her nitrous assisted “Lead Sled” 1978 Fairmont Wagon. Ochs lost traction and found herself in a scary fishtail which sent the car in a catapult across the centerline at high speed, resulting in a direct side impact with the guardrail. Ochs was alert and removed from the car with a severe concussion and badly bruised right arm- serious injuries, yet ones that she will fully recover from. Her team is already making plans for their rebuild, which will be another wagon, of course!
There were a handful of other incidents, but thankfully none with serious injuries. By the time round two came to the line, the starting line was hooking well, and drivers seemed to have a handle on the track conditions. Rounds continued smoothly as the fields were repeatedly cut in half and final round time was quickly approaching with big money on the line for Friday’s winners.
True Street welcomed Jason Doisher to the winners circle as he claimed $3,000 by defeating Rick Hilton. The biggest payday in Friday’s action went to Tony Thorn who claimed $8,000 in his winning effort over Kenjo Kelley in Small Tire. Tony Foulks wheeled his twin turbo Camaro from Oklahoma to a matching purse of $8,000 for his win in Old School Outlaw over Street Outlaws star Chuck Seitsinger in his Death Trap Mustang. Ray Garcia put his Camaro in the Sportsman class winner’s circle by taking out Scott Lassiter. Factory Street and Factory Truck were combined as Chris Dearmond took home $2,500 in his win over Brent Baker. Finally, the first ever Jr. Dragster winner in the Redemption No Prep Series was Addyson Owen who took out Ashton Meggison to win $300 cash money.
Though the on-track action had ended, competition moved to the food pavilion, as one hell of a showdown was just beginning in the practice tree race, which paid $2,000 cash to the winner. Top name no prep drivers like Kye Kelley, David “Bird” Jones, James “Birdman” Finney mixed it up with local heavy hitters from the bracket racing scene. In the wee hours of the morning, accomplished bracket racer Slate Cummings took home the cash.
After Friday’s full day of racing, a reasonable amount of fresh rubber had built up on the starting line, so Saturday’s traction issues were far less problematic. Instead of fish-tailing, white knuckle launches, the fans were treated with great side-by-side drag racing with the occasional bumper-draging wheelstand on Saturday. The real test came at the top end of the track, which had far less available grip than at the starting line. The driver’s ability to control the throttle down track would prevail over who had the most horsepower, in most cases.
Fields of more than 30 cars in Big Tire and Small Tire wowed the crowd, as some big names dropped like flies in round one. Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana have become hot beds for fast racecars purpose-built for no prep racing. The locals would have plenty of competition as this event attracted teams from across the country, including racers from Illinois to Georgia..Whether you’re a Street Outlaws star or an unknown newcomer, every round proved to be a challenge, and several fan favorites met their demise early in competition.
In the Small Tire final round, Eric Stubbs from Beach City, Texas met Keith Szabo, who made the tow all the way from Gainesville, Georgia. This all twin turbo affair was neck and neck early, but Szabo lost traction at the 330′ mark, and that’s all Stubbs needed to streak ahead for the victory. Stubbs’ 2003 Ford Mustang, packing a 440 cubic-inch Ford small block boosted by twin 88mm turbos, scored its second no prep event win. There were plenty of happy faces1 in the winners circle as Stubbs scored $20,000 for his efforts.
“This win is huge for us. We struggled Friday with what we thought was a suspension issue but resulted in being a leaking transmission yoke. Once we solved that issue the car ran very well and we were able to get it done today. I’d like to thank Rey Gonzales, Shannon Morgan, Ron at Santhuff’s Suspension Specialists, David at Bullseye Turbochargers and Sean at Excessive Racing Engines for their support,” said Stubbs.
Big Tire action welcomed Jerry Bird and “The Probe” to the line against local favorite Spencer “Cornbread” Johnson for the final round. Bird was chasing his second straight Redemption Big Tire prize after winning the Tulsa event last November, while Johnson was hoping to put his ex-Warren Johnson Pro Stock machine, now turned outlaw grudge and no prep car, in the winners circle in his own backyard. In a very close race, Bird’s nitrous-assisted Probe took the win light by a slim margin. Tally another big payday for the Louisiana-based “Bird Boyz”, as they collected $20,000 and celebrated in the winners circle, reenacting a recent run in with the law which sent Bird for a night in jail during a street race in Texas just a few weeks prior. All in good fun and all smiles for Bird and company who will hold the points lead in Big Tire heading into the next event.
Outlaw Street dwindled down to Tim Oswalt’s black Ford Mustang from Alabama against Duane Biddle’s Mustang from Pflugerville, Texas. Off the line, Biddle’s machine reached for the sky and eventually grabbed rear bumper, while Oswalt went straight and true and right into the winners circle, scoring $7,000 in cold hard cash. King of the Tailgate honors went to John Dittmer from College Station, Texas who put his Chevy Luv in the winners circle by defeating Ray Espericueta’s Chevy S-10. Espericueta wasn’t left empty handed as his team won “Best Appearing Crew” and some gas money for the trip home to south Texas.
The finals concluded with the the 5.80 and 6.50 index classes. With a unique mix of both mild street cars and local index regulars, these classes provided some great side by side racing between feature rounds. It may be index, but with no times show and no track prep, it was anyone’s game at the starting line. Ryan Jock wheeled his first generation Chevy Camaro from Corsicana, Texas to the 5.80 win, defeating local favorite Rylan McClaskey, who just graduated from the junior dragster program. Jesse Garza made the tow from Austin, Texas and scored the 6.50 win in his first gen Camaro by defeating Cody Lange.

This year is going to be full of action, and we are very excited about the next three races this season. 2017 Genesis G90 Adds Aspirational Luxury to Our Four Seasons Fleet
A Korean luxury car? Does that sound a bit odd to your ear? It might. It wasn’t so long ago that most folks looked a bit askance at Toyota for launching its Lexus brand. And you might not know it, but Hyundai has been building luxury cars for about 8 years now—the Equus and the Genesis. It was the latter model that created a bit of buzz for the company’s more premium efforts, and now that name has spawned its own brand—and a new top-tier model, the G90.
The 2017 Genesis G90’s exterior is, from most angles, a bit of a hodgepodge of other familiar full-size luxury sedans. BMW’s 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz’s S Class definitely feature in the details, but the overall presence is more in line with the current Lexus LS—which is due to be replaced with an all-new model in just a few weeks. Being almost entirely derivative, the G90’s design is very much “inside the box,” but it’s also a pleasant assembly of cherry-picked crowd pleasers, so while it’s not unique, it’s still handsome, especially wrapped in its subtle London Gray paint job. Inside, the story is much the same, with the same relative influences. As an upstart luxury brand, copying the segment leaders might seem like a cop-out, but it may actually be a stroke of genius. Why reinvent the wheel when you can just borrow one?
Where the G90 does make some bold moves is price. At just $71,575 (including delivery fees), our Four Seasons test car comes equipped with no options—because there are none. The only choices you’ll make in choosing your G90 are what sort of engine you’d like (a turbo V-6 or a V-8), whether you’d like rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the car’s exterior color, and, in a few cases, the interior color scheme (most exterior colors offer only one interior color scheme). That’s it. And yet it’s still pretty much loaded.
In addition to a 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine rated at 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive, our Four Seasons 2017 Genesis G90 also includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, a head-up display, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and a host of other electronic safety features. But that’s not all! A 12.3-inch display houses the navigation and infotainment systems, 7.1-channel surround sound blasts through 17 speakers, and Qi wireless charging lets you keep the electrons while cutting the cord. There’s even more standard equipment in the G90 3.3T Premium AWD, but more on that in updates to come.
Copy editor Kara Snow shed some light on those other options, noting of the G90, “As much as Automobile editors love to drive, this one is best appreciated from the back seat. Plenty of legroom, Nappa leather seats, three-zone climate control, power side and rear window shades, and easy power door closure add up to create a cosseted, upscale passenger car.” Associate editor Jonathon Klein, on the other hand, found delight in a feature shared by every car: the front seats. “As far as I’m concerned, the front seats in the G90 are S-Class worthy. They feel as if your posterior is swaddled in the softest of goose down. I could see spending days in those seats without ever getting a cramp or growing weary of the road and the trip.” Online editor Ed Tahaney calls out the G90’s ride comfort as a standout feature, calling it, “A big boat of a car with a ride that reminds me of a early 90’s Chevrolet Caprice. It floats down the highway and bounces like a beach ball when you hit bumps in the road.”
It hasn’t been a perfect honeymoon with our new Four Seasons G90, however. A few gripes have arisen already, with one in particular making the rounds. Klein argues there’s some work to be done on the center console design, saying, “There are too many buttons by a factor of ten. My wife and I started counting one night and found that there are over 113 buttons in the cabin. That has to be a record—and one Genesis may not want to achieve. There are too many single use buttons that could be easily combined or even eliminated.” Tahaney explains why the buttons and layout aren’t ideal: “I haven’t spent too much time in it but it has way too many buttons. The volume control knob is too close to the same size as the A/C knob. Every time I reach over to turn up the volume, I end up screwing with the A/C.”
Toys and design are only part of the luxury sedan equation, however. To hang with the best of today’s top-tier cars, the G90 will need to offer some muscle and some hustle to counter its cool-hand style. We’ll be digging deeper into whether the 3.3-liter turbo V-6 delivers the goods through the course of our year with the G90, but our initial testing shows the car is certainly in the ballpark. With a 4,840-lb weight on our scales, the G90 3.3T AWD scampers to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds, running the quarter mile in 13.9 seconds at 100.3 mph. Fifteen years ago, those would have been pretty solid figures for a mid-range sports car. When it comes to cornering, the G90’s softer side shines through: it managed just 0.86 g of lateral grip on our skid pad, running the figure eight in 25.6 seconds at an average of 0.73 g. To put that in context, the current 740i xDrive hits 60 mph from a standstill in just 5.1 (manufacturer claimed) seconds.
Look for more updates on our year-long journey with the Genesis G90 in the coming months as we do our best to see whether this is the new luxury brand’s moonshot, the foundation for a new Lexus, or if it’s just another near-miss, doomed to wither in the netherworld of “near luxury.”

That’s it. And yet it’s still pretty much loaded.
In addition to a 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine rated at 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive, our Four Seasons 2017 Genesis G90 also includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, a head-up display, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and a host of other electronic safety features. But that’s not all! A 12.3-inch display houses the navigation and infotainment systems, 7.1-channel surround sound blasts through 17 speakers, and Qi wireless charging lets you keep the electrons while cutting the cord. There’s even more standard equipment in the G90 3.3T Premium AWD, but more on that in updates to come.
Copy editor Kara Snow shed some light on those other options, noting of the G90, “As much as Automobile editors love to drive, this one is best appreciated from the back seat. Plenty of legroom, Nappa leather seats, three-zone climate control, power side and rear window shades, and easy power door closure add up to create a cosseted, upscale passenger car.” Associate editor Jonathon Klein, on the other hand, found delight in a feature shared by every car: the front seats. “As far as I’m concerned, the front seats in the G90 are S-Class worthy. They feel as if your posterior is swaddled in the softest of goose down. I could see spending days in those seats without ever getting a cramp or growing weary of the road and the trip.” Online editor Ed Tahaney calls out the G90’s ride comfort as a standout feature, calling it, “A big boat of a car with a ride that reminds me of a early 90’s Chevrolet Caprice. It floats down the highway and bounces like a beach ball when you hit bumps in the road.”
It hasn’t been a perfect honeymoon with our new Four Seasons G90, however. A few gripes have arisen already, with one in particular making the rounds. Klein argues there’s some work to be done on the center console design, saying, “There are too many buttons by a factor of ten. My wife and I started counting one night and found that there are over 113 buttons in the cabin. That has to be a record—and one Genesis may not want to achieve. There are too many single use buttons that could be easily combined or even eliminated.” Tahaney explains why the buttons and layout aren’t ideal: “I haven’t spent too much time in it but it has way too many buttons. The volume control knob is too close to the same size as the A/C knob. Every time I reach over to turn up the volume, I end up screwing with the A/C.”
Toys and design are only part of the luxury sedan equation, however. To hang with the best of today’s top-tier cars, the G90 will need to offer some muscle and some hustle to counter its cool-hand style. We’ll be digging deeper into whether the 3.3-liter turbo V-6 delivers the goods through the course of our year with the G90, but our initial testing shows the car is certainly in the ballpark. With a 4,840-lb weight on our scales, the G90 3.3T AWD scampers to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds, running the quarter mile in 13.9 seconds at 100.3 mph. Fifteen years ago, those would have been pretty solid figures for a mid-range sports car. When it comes to cornering, the G90’s softer side shines through: it managed just 0.86 g of lateral grip on our skid pad, running the figure eight in 25.6 seconds at an average of 0.73 g. To put that in context, the current 740i xDrive hits 60 mph from a standstill in just 5.1 (manufacturer claimed) seconds.

Each car manufacturer like Toyota, Honda, Nissan, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche and many more like to named their car based on the wind(Volkswagen), name of city(Nissan), number (BMW, Mercedes Benz, Audi), some English and Japanese word for luxury and premium (Honda,Toyota ) and name of the owner(Rolls Royce) and many more. Their name does represent the model characteristic like for BMW the 3 series is entry level sedan, 5 series is a compact executive and the 7 series is the ultra-premium sedan some goes with the Mercedes-Benz C, E, and S class. Each of the car names is famous in the world and had been a dream car for some of the car lovers.
Some things go to the thing that contacts with the road the car tire. Each tire is described by different characteristics like energy saving, comfort, high performance and ultra-high performance and for each of the tire the tire manufacture like to make it with a different tire thread. Some like the car they had a unique name for each of their tire. The big four tire manufacturer Goodyear, Michelin, Bridgestone and Continental had their unique way to name their car tire.

We start with Goodyear. Goodyear will like to name their car tire that was enforced with a Kevlar as Goodyear Assurance. Why they’re named it as Assurance, it is because the Kevlar is basically being more durable than the steel and better in absorbing the road abnormality hence the name Assurance were given. If they tire had an enforced grip or fuel saving capabilities with the Kevlar then Goodyear like to call them Assurance with the name of the tire like Goodyear Assurance ArmorGrip, Duraplus, and TripleMax. On the other hand, for the comfort, and for the performance type tire they will like named as Goodyear Eagle. For the tire that has the characteristic of high performance and ultra-high performance, the name will Goodyear Eagle F1. The named it as F1 as Goodyear had a superb record in the F1 field and the name also shows the characteristic of the tire too.
Bridgestone, on the other hand, have their own way to name their tire. They basically separated each of the tire characteristics like a section and each of the tires will fall in this section. They named their energy saving as Ecopia, the comfort tire as Turanza and the high performance as Potenza. For Ecopia they liked to name Ecopia EP with a number, Turanza as Turanza EL, GR, and ER with the number and finally, for the Potenza tire, they will like to name it Potenza RE with a number. Bridgestone had this unique way of naming their tire.

For the tire that is more on comfort they’re like to name as Michelin Primacy but in this type of tire Michelin likes to name their tire with a specific name like Michelin Primacy ST, Primacy HP and much more. Their high performance will be called as Michelin Pilot Sports series and they like to name it via number like Pilot Sport 3 and Pilot Sport 4. In short, we will like to call as Michelin PS3 or PS4 their latest tire in this range. For the ultra-high performance, they like to name as Michelin Pilot Super. This name clearly defines this tire high-performance capability.
Among all the tire manufacturer, Continental have their own unique way to name their tire. Continental does not have any energy saving tire in their ranks as most of their tire had a low rolling resistance tire as Continental had spends times and research to make sure their all their tire has a low rolling resistance. They like to name their tire starting with Conti with the name in middle and end with contact. For an example, their comfort tire they will like to name it as ContiComfortContact, ContiPremiumContact, and ContiMaxContact. For their high performance and the ultra-high-performance tire, they will like to name as ContiUltraContact and ContiSportContact respectively.
