Hunt: Your folks are well?
Donna: Oh, great. Thank you.
Hunt: Only parents I ever knew who came to the game to cheer on the xylophonist.
[...]
Hunt: We are a long way from high school.
Donna: Oh, well, thank G-d. My hair. And that band uniform....
Hunt: Hey, we all knew that you weren't cut out for band. You were just marking time, waiting for something better to come along.
-- Halt and Catch Fire season 1, episode 3: “High Plains Hardware”
1. Donna was in band in high school....and the implication here is that she played the xylophone. So, she was in the percussion section, aw!
2. Her parents were apparently very supportive, but not big football fans?
3. Back to the point/Donna: Donna plays the piano -- which is very literally not cut out for band. A standard concert band doesn’t include a piano, and neither does a standard orchestra. When you see a piano/pianist with an orchestra, it’s typically as a featured soloist on a concerto or something like that.
4. Is it me or is it very hard to imagine Donna with ‘bad’ hair?
TL;DR: Donna isn’t a percussionist stuck in the back and she’s not the conductor leading the band: she’s kind of both, as a pianist. She can play in front of an orchestra, or by herself. She can work with a group, though she can’t quite be in the group -- or she can go solo and be just fine.
