Flavia, la monaca musulmana (Flavia the Heretic, 1974)
"Why? Why is God male? The Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost - all male! Even the Twelve Apostles, all twelve of them... male."
#Flavia la monaca musulmana#Flavia the heretic#italian cinema#nunsploitation#Gianfranco Mingozzi#Fabrizio Onofri#florinda bolkan#maría casares#Claudio Cassinelli#anthony higgins#Spiros Focás#Guido Celano#Laura De Marchi#Raika juri#Jill Pratt#Giuseppe pertile#Stefano Trabalza#a.... challenging film to appreciate. not sure i can say i enjoyed it‚ exactly‚ but i can't deny that it's artfully made and its script#and execution is more intelligent than its reputation and graphic visuals would suggest. a challenging film. i posted a longer review on#letterboxd which (ever so slightly) better expresses my thoughts. suffice to say this is nunsploitation adjacent Italian genre cinema which#mixes some truly shocking scenes of violence and rape (including highly graphic torture scenes) with a partially successful feminist take#on Flavia's struggle to define her place as a woman in 1400s Italy‚ a time and place overtly oppressive to women. Flavia is a kind of#Italian Jeanne d'arc whose psychosexual trauma drives her to reject her Catholic calling‚ but whose subsequent military actions still have#a twisted quasi religious design. for revenge and for liberty‚ she cries‚ but whilst revenge may be within her grasp‚ liberty in this era#is an impossibility. whether under the heel of the catholic church‚ her abusive father‚ her muslim lover‚ Flavia's existence can never be#truly free of patriarchal rule. of course the feminist readings are somewhat undermined by the fact that the film was written and directed#by men‚ and by the glee with which those creators depict harrowing scenes of gratuitous violence against women. does the exploitation#outweigh the intelligence? putting aside the gore and such‚ this is a very beautiful film (there's a stunningly surreal dream sequence in#the final act) with an excellent score. the cast are all very strong too‚ from Bolkan's mesmerisingly powerful turn as Flavia to the late#great Cassinelli as the sole truly sympathetic male character and an outrageously pretty (and unexpected) Tony Higgins in eyeliner!

MOUNTAIN OF THE CANNIBAL GOD (Sergio Martino, 1978)
“Why is everyone so scared of the Pooka?”“In their language, Rara Me means mountain of the cannibal god” Well that explains it then. Why Susan (Ursula Andress, who was the first “Bond Girl” in Dr No), is tied up in the jungle naked, being smeared with cream by some local girls. Why her husband’s skeleton is being worshipped as a god because his Geiger counter is still ticking within his bones.…

Viddying the Nasties | Mountain of the Cannibal God (Martino, 1978)
Tumblr media
I am still very much in a jungle adventure mood, and for all the issues one could have with this movie, it very much hit the spot. Compared to the other cannibal movies I’ve seen, this one feels more lavish, thanks to the presence of name actors like Ursula Andress and Stacy Keach, as well as the handsome scope cinematography that nicely brings out the lushness of the environment. This means that this doesn’t feel quite as pungent as something like Cannibal Ferox, where the sheer ugliness of the material seems to overwhelm all other considerations, although this is far from lacking in the expected elements of extreme violence and animal cruelty. It’s just that this seems to build more of a narrative around them, and emphasizes the characters and their survival rather than acting purely as a geek show.
As for the animal cruelty, like Cannibal Ferox a lot of this the scenes are of animals killing and eating other animals and feel somewhat divorced from the thrust of the plot, although there are scenes where the characters get up real close. (Exhibit A: the cannibals in the climax feast on seemingly live animals and try to feed a lizard to one of the protagonists.) I will say that for the most part the movie doesn’t rub your face in it quite as much as some of the other entries I’ve seen. But it’s still pretty funny when Claudio Cassinelli, after saving Keach from a cobra, tells the others, “I don't kill animals.” If only the movie felt the same way. (Apparently he saved Andress from a cobra for real during the production using the same method.)
Cassinelli also spells out the subtext of these movies. “Animals only follow their instincts out of all living being. Killing and eating. Man, too, has the same instincts. To satisfy them he uses more subtle means.” Of course this is leaving out that these movies view the cannibals (often seen here with Zardoz masks when they leave their cave) as animals instead of people, although this one tries to cover its ass by showing you normal, non-malicious natives for contrast. This also pays lip service to imperialist critique, with the motives of some of the characters eventually revealed to be exploitative, but it’s a little half hearted.
This also feels closer to sexploitation territory than any cannibal movie I’ve seen except Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals. This is largely due to Andress, who the movie has tied up and slathered up by a pair of topless cannibal ladies like a pinup. This is followed up by a rather graphic scene of a cannibal woman masturbating, which is still well and good. And then it hits you with a scene of a cannibal man frantically thrusting into the behind of a large boar. Yikes! I will say that the emphasis on atmosphere in the earlier sections means that the feverish pitch of the climax, when it starts piling on the outrageous sights and sounds, has quite an impact.
