Julian Fellowes's period drama Belgravia is an adaptation of his novel of the same name. The plot, which follows the trajectory of a family secret from a party in Belgium on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo in 1825 to England's Belgravia neighborhood in the 1840s, is a self-contained story, but in March 2023, MGM+ announced there will be a sequel series to Belgravia, aptly titled Belgravia: The Next Chapter. It will be set in the same world, but in a different time.
"I’m so proud of everything this dedicated team accomplished with the original Belgravia series. I cannot wait for the world to return to Belgravia for this new iteration, expertly crafted by Helen Edmundson," Julian Fellowes, Executive Producer, said in a statement. "Old and new fans alike will be swept off their feet with an emotionally engaging story, memorable characters, and brilliant production and costume design."
Here's what we know about season two:
The second season will be Belgravia: The Next Chapter.
Hannah Onslow as Emily Dunn; Sophie Thompson as Mrs. Dunn; Harriet Slater as Clara Trenchard [MARK MAINZ/CARNIVAL FILM & TELEVISION LIMITED/MGM+]
The show will pick up in 1871, three decades after the events of season one. Per Deadline, "the series tells the love story of Frederick Trenchard, who has grown up as the third Lord Trenchard, and his new love interest, Clara Dunn, who is a newcomer to London society. Unaware that his birth was the product of an affair between his mother Susan and the scoundrel John Bellasis, a troubled childhood has left Frederick deeply insecure, which challenges his courtship of and marriage to Clara."
There's an entirely new cast:
Hannah Onslow as Emily Dunn; Harriet Slater as Clara Trenchard; Sophie Thompson as Mrs. Dunn; Sophie Winkleman as Duchess of Rochester [ROBERT VIGLASKY/CARNIVAL FILM & TELEVISION LIMITED/MGM+]
Harriet Slater as Clara Trenchard. [COLIN HUTTON/CARNIVAL FILM & TELEVISION LIMITED/MGM+]
Harriet Slater will star as Clara Trenchard (née Dunn), "a young, smart, and striking woman, and a fresh face amongst the society of Belgravia, Clara is thrilled by her marriage to the enigmatic Frederick … but as she comes to learn more of her husband and the trauma he carries, Clara finds her marriage will not be as smooth as she first thought and is something she must fight for."
Benjamin Wainwright as Frederick Trenchard; Harriet Slater as Clara Trenchard. [ROBERT VIGLASKY/CARNIVAL FILM & TELEVISION LIMITED/MGM+]
Ben Wainwright will play Frederic Trenchard, "the young and handsome third Lord Trenchard, Frederick takes after his grandfather with a ferocious work ethic, having built a large business empire. Immediately smitten with Clara, he marries her after a whirlwind romance, but brings with him traumas from his past that threatens his newfound happiness."
The rest of the cast is as follows:
Edward Bluemel as Dr. Stephen Ellerby
[COLIN HUTTON/CARNIVAL FILM & TELEVISION LIMITED/MGM+]
Hannah Onslow as Emily Dunn; Toby Regbo as Reverend James Trenchard [COLIN HUTTON/CARNIVAL FILM & TELEVISION LIMITED/MGM+]
Liam Garrigan as Fletcher; Elaine Cassidy as Davison
[MARK MAINZ/CARNIVAL FILM & TELEVISION LIMITED/MGM+]
Edward Bluemel will play Dr. Stephen Ellerby, a young idealistic doctor captivated by Clara
Claude Perron will play French businesswoman the Marquise D’Étagnac
Toby Regbo will play Rev. James Trenchard, Frederick’s estranged brother
Elaine Cassidy will play Clara's lady's maid Davison
Hannah Onslow will play Clara’s older sister, Emily Dunn
Sophie Thompson will play Clara and Emily's mother, Mrs. Dunn.
Benjamin Wainwright as Frederick Trenchard; Sophie Winkleman as Duchess of Rochester.
COLIN HUTTON/CARNIVAL FILM & TELEVISION LIMITED/MGM+
Plus, the show will feature Sophie Winkleman as the Duchess of Rochester, described as "the queen of Belgravia" who sits atop the social hierarchy. Winkleman, also known as Lady Frederick Windsor, is a member of the British royal family. In August 2023, Winkleman opened up to the Daily Mail about the allure of Regency-era romances. "Just the way you compose yourself, the way you speak the words, we are in such a casual era," she explained, "To go back to some kind of formality, you realise how oddly sexy it is, because everything's so out there in this current century. There's actually no intrigue at all, so going back to then, when everything had to be so covered up for the sake of propriety, everything ripples under the surface. It is quite a sensual experience."
Alice Eve as Susan Trenchard. [COLIN HUTTON/CARNIVAL FILM & TELEVISION LIMITED/MGM+]
There's two returning cast members from the original Belgravia: Alice Eve as Susan Trenchard and Richard Goulding as Oliver Trenchard.
Belgravia was intended to be a limited series.
“For me, this is a completed story, although whenever I say this to any of the actors, they disagree with me violently, so I’m not sure we know the definitive answer to that, really,” Julian Fellowes initially said at a preview for Belgravia. “We’ll have to see. If anyone wants any more…”
“We definitely made this as a limited series because it’s really enjoyable at times to have a clear beginning, middle and end,” Gareth Neame, who also worked on Belgravia, said, per The Wrap. “And it’s obviously been adapted from a novel that has a clear ending. So that’s where we are right now. But obviously one never knows. If we find it does really well and we find another way to bring the title back in the future then I guess we would consider that. But right now it’s very clearly a limited series.
Belgravia season two premieres January 14, 2024.
Harriet Slater as Clara Trenchard; Benjamin Wainwright as Frederick Trenchard.
MARK MAINZ
There will be eight episodes in the season. Watch a first trailer:

The lush British costume drama, Belgravia: The Next Chapter, from Downton Abbey’s Julian Fellowes has undergone a few changes since 2020. The setting is still the posh London enclave of the title, but it’s 1871 — 30 years later — and most of Season 1’s characters have died. The spotlight is now on Lord Frederick Trenchard (Benjamin Wainwright), grandson of the original Belgravia’s wealthy, social-climbing merchant James Trenchard.
Frederick was badly abused by his father, James’ son Oliver (the returning Richard Goulding, shown in flashbacks with Alice Eve, another returnee, as wife Susan). The reason? Frederick’s real father is the cad John Bellasis (Adam James). Never told about his illegitimate birth, the insecure, self-loathing young lord blames his inability to love on his younger brother, James (Toby Regbo, The Last Kingdom). “James was always the favorite child,” says exec producer Gareth Neame. “That completely destroyed Frederick.”
Still, Frederick believes — maybe incorrectly — that his spirited and beautiful new wife, Clara (Harriet Slater), can help him overcome his demons. But according to Neame, “They’re too strong.… Clara feels oppressed by her husband and trapped in that marriage.” And Frederick doesn’t help the situation, as he’s obsessed with his risky investments in the future of railroads and partnering with the unconventional Marquise D’Étagnac (Claude Perron), a moneyed French exile and an astute businesswoman.
Lord Trenchard is not, of course, the only one with a secret. His brother James, in reality a kindly reverend and not the monster Frederick imagines, struggles with his forbidden sexuality.
But there’s a truth-teller in this Chapter: An unexpected visitor could blow up several characters’ lives with just a few words.

Jacques Gagnon in Mon Oncle Antoine (Claude Jutra, 1971)
Cast: Jacques Gagnon, Lyne Champagne, Jean Duceppe, Olivette Thibaud, Claude Jutra, Lionel Villleneuve, Hélène Loiselle, Georges Alexander, Benoit Marcoux. Screenplay: Clément Perron, Claude Jutra. Cinematography: Michel Brault. Film editing: Claire Boyer, Claude Jutra. Music: Jean Cousineau.
The title of Claude Jutra's richly textured film seems to promise a coming-of-age story, which is what, eventually, it delivers. But first the film acquaints us with a Quebec asbestos mining town in the 1940s. The first event we witness is a fight between a miner, Jos Poulin (Lionel Villeneuve), and his boss (Georges Alexander), which is hardly a fight at all because the boss speaks English and Jos doesn't, which easily allows him to ignore what the boss is saying and do what he wants to do: quit the mine and go look for work elsewhere. Our first look at Antoine (Jean Duceppe) is when he's doing his work as the town's undertaker: a comically macabre scene in which the corpse is denuded of the "suit" he was wearing for the viewing, which turns out to be a false front quickly plucked off the naked body and saved for another corpse, and the rosary is untwined from his stiffening fingers. Antoine is the owner, with his wife, Cecile (Olivette Thibault), of the town's general store, which employs his teenage nephew, Benoit (Jacques Gagnon); a teen girl, Carmen (Lyne Champagne), who lives at the store because her skinflint father (Benoit Marcoux), who pockets her earnings, doesn't want to pay for her upkeep; and Fernand (Jutra), who clerks at the store. It's Christmas time, though there's not much sentiment in the film's treatment of the holiday. One of the best scenes in the movie comes when the mine boss rides through the town in a little two-wheeled cart, tossing cheap gifts to the children as the grownups frown at his stinginess and comment that he hasn't given out any raises or bonuses. Benoit and a friend throw snowballs at the horse, causing the boss to beat a hasty retreat. One of the most celebrated of Canadian films, Mon Oncle Antoine benefits from Jutra's adaptation with Clément Perron of Perron's story, and from Michel Brault's cinematography, but most of all from the great credibility of its cast.

Deadline: MGM+ has set cast for Belgravia: The Next Chapter, Julian Fellowes’ sequel series to the hit historical drama. Harriet Slater, Ben Wainwright, Edward Bluemel, Claude Perron and Elaine Cassidy are set as series regulars in the drama series executive produced by Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant. Additionally, Toby Regbo, Hannah Onslow, Sophie Thompson and Sophie Winkleman will recur in the eight-part series. Filming is underway in the UK with premiere set for winter 2023.
The Next Chapter is a continuation of Belgravia, named for and set in the affluent London district that became synonymous with the upper echelons of London society in the 19th century.
Belgravia: The Next Chapter picks up in 1871, three decades after the events depicted in the 2020 limited series, which was written by Fellowes (Downton Abbey, The Gilded Age) and based on his novel of the same name. Developed and written by playwright and screenwriter Helen Edmundson (Dalgliesh, Mary Magdalene), the series tells the love story of Frederick Trenchard (Wainwright), who has grown up as the third Lord Trenchard, and his new love interest, Clara Dunn (Slater), who is a newcomer to London society. Unaware that his birth was the product of an affair between his mother Susan and the scoundrel John Bellasis, a troubled childhood has left Frederick deeply insecure, which challenges his courtship of and marriage to Clara.
Slater’s Clara Trenchard (née Dunn) is a young, smart, and striking woman, and a fresh face amongst the society of Belgravia, Clara is thrilled by her marriage to the enigmatic Frederick … but as she comes to learn more of her husband and the trauma he carries, Clara finds her marriage will not be as smooth as she first thought and is something she must fight for.
Wainwright’s Frederick Trenchard, the young and handsome third Lord Trenchard, Frederick takes after his grandfather with a ferocious work ethic, having built a large business empire. Immediately smitten with Clara, he marries her after a whirlwind romance, but brings with him traumas from his past that threatens his newfound happiness.
Bluemel plays Dr. Stephen Ellerby. An idealistic, charming, and attractive young doctor, Stephen is brought into the society of Belgravia as he cares for Peter, son of the Duke of Rochester—a far cry from his life amongst the bohemians of Bloomsbury. He is quickly captivated by Clara after meeting her and starts to gain her trust as their lives interweave.
Regbo plays Rev. James Trenchard, Frederick’s estranged brother. A gentle, kind and religious man, James is haunted by both the separation from his brother and a private battle he is determined to keep hidden.
Onslow portrays Emily Dunn, Clara’s older sister. Emily responds to her sister’s swift marriage with a hint of jealousy as she is desperate to make her own match. But when she throws herself into charity work at her new church, she is instantly attracted to the Reverend James Trenchard.
Thompson plays Mrs. Dunn, Emily and Clara’s devoted mother. Mrs Dunn is a nervous, giddy, and chatty widow who has moved to Belgravia with her daughters and is thrilled by Clara’s new marriage and the security in social standing it brings.
Perron plays The Marquise D’Étagnac, a glamorous and highly unconventional French businesswoman, who is introduced to Belgravia by the Duke and Duchess of Rochester. Offering a wealth of business opportunities, Frederick sees a chance to expand into new areas of industry.
Winkleman portrays Duchess of Rochester. The queen of Belgravia, the Duchess and her husband stand at the top of Belgravia’s social hierarchy – but privately, she struggles to reconcile the Duke’s feelings towards their unwell, eldest son Peter with her own wishes for his care.
Cassidy plays Davison. Clara’s newly appointed lady’s maid, Davison grows to protect her mistress with a fierce devotion, recognizing Clara’s youth and need for love. Davison has experienced hard times in her own past and is intent on supporting Clara through her struggles.
Led by Neame, the series reunites Carnival’s award-winning creative team behind the original series. Neame and Marchant will serve as executive producers with Fellowes and Joanna Strevens. Helen Edmundson serves as showrunner and executive producer. The series will be directed by John Alexander, Paul Wilmshurst and Marisol Adler. Colin Wratten (Killing Eve) who produced the original series, will return as producer.
Belgravia: The Next Chapter is a Carnival Films co-production with MGMPlus Studios and will be distributed by NBCUniversal Global Distribution. Carnival Films is part of Universal International Studios, a division of Universal Studio Group.

With Downton Abbey over and The Gilded Age wrapping up its freshman season, MGM+ will host the creative teams' next show.
As previously reported, Belgravia: The Next Chapter premieres on Sunday, January 14, 2024.
While the series is dubbed the next chapter in the Belgravia franchise, the show starts with a new crop of characters that makes it easy to tune in without watching the original.
TV Fanatic scored an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip that showcases what life's like in 1871 for the characters and even hints at some links to the original series.
We won't spoil what the clip reveals, but there are sentiments from the new cast members and writer Helen Edmundson.
Belgravia: The Next Chapter tells the love story of Frederick Trenchard (Benjamin Wainwright), the third Lord Trenchard, and his new love interest, Clara Dunn (Harriet Slater), a beautiful newcomer to London society.
Unaware that his birth was the product of an affair between his mother, Susan (Alice Eve) and the scoundrel John Bellasis (Adam James), a troubled childhood has left Frederick deeply insecure, which challenges his marriage to Clara.
As Clara learns more of her husband and his traumas, she finds her marriage may not be as harmonious as she dreamed.
Picking up three decades later in 1871, "The Next Chapter is an exciting continuation of the 2020 limited series named for—and set in—the affluent London district that became synonymous with the upper echelons of London society in the 19th century," according to MGM+.
"Introducing new characters and relationships, The Next Chapter promises plenty of scandal that you won't soon forget.
Developed and written by critically acclaimed playwright and screenwriter Edmundson, Belgravia: The Next Chapter, is executive produced by Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey, The Gilded Age) and based on his novel of the same name.
The series stars Harriet Slater as Clara Trenchard (née Dunn), Benjamin Wainwright as Frederick Trenchard, Edward Bluemel as Dr. Stephen Ellerby, Toby Regbo as Rev. James Trenchard, and Hannah Onslow as Emily Dunn.
The cast is rounded out by Sophie Thompson as Mrs. Dunn, Claude Perron as The Marquise D'Etagnac, Sophie Winkleman as the Duchess of Rochester, and Elaine Cassidy as Davison.
The two returning cast members from the original series are Alice Eve as Susan Trenchard and Richard Goulding as Oliver Trenchard.
Pulling off a sequel is tricky, but the official trailer showcased a very different Belgravia as the series leaps to 1871.
The world has changed, but Belgravia remains, meaning that although we're meeting an entirely new cast, we're getting some great stories at the iconic location.
Whether that will come together in the way those associated with the show hope, we don't know, but for now, we're excited about the prospect of returning to that rich universe.
Check out the exclusive clip below.
It's a fun clip, right?
It takes us back into that world, and seeing the cast and creatives enthusiastic about the project is always good.
If you haven't checked out the official trailer, it's below.
