Luo Yunxi's next drama is coming!
This is what we know can assume so far! I got so excited, I had to write about it!
Tumblr media
Well, first of all, a lot of this information hasn't been confirmed yet. Particularly around the cast, there are many contradictory rumors.
The drama is currently called Shui Long Yin (水龙吟). It will likely start filming mid-November 2023 in Hangdian. It's going to be a long shoot with 4-5 month. This means it's likely going to have a full 40 episodes.
The drama is an adaptation of Teng Ping's novel 千劫眉. This is the author from the recently aired Mysterious Lotus Casebook. Going from what I have picked up from the original novel, there are some similarities between both stories, mainly centering on the dynamics between multiple male characters, with no female love interests. There is also the possibility, that MLC scriptwriters added some parts of 千劫眉 to the other story, so both might be a bit (too) similar. So we will see what kind of further adaption will be made.
The drama will be directed by Chen Zhoufei, who has done mostly modern dramas, as well as the recently shot Shao Nian Bai Ma Zui Chun Feng Season 2, another Wuxia bormance drama.
We can assume, that the drama will be produced by Otter Studio again, who already worked with Luo Yunxi for Immortality and Till The End of The Moon. As for the broadcast platforms, rumor has it, that there is an ongoing biting war between Yukou and Mango. Currently, it seems like Mango TV is winning, and the show will be additional aired on Hunan TV - which will reach a broader audience! I'm not an expert on this, but not many Wuxia and Xianxia dramas get aired on TV, so this is a big deal!
The rumored cast of the drama changes from day to day. The two names attached to the show the longest (besides Luo Yunxi) are Xiao Shun Yao and Chen Yao. Both have been acting with Luo Yunxi before in either TTEOTM or in Chen Yao's case in the yet to air Immortality and Follow Your Heart. There is another cast member of Follow Your Heart appearing on the possible cast list for the first time: Cheng Lei!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While I haven't seen Chen Yao in a drama yet, I'm really excited about the possibility of Xiao Shun Yao, who I loved in Mysterious Lotus Bookcase, and Cheng Lei, who was one of my favorites in My Journey to You. I'm trying not to get my hopes up, since the cast will likely change! But then there is also this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for the rest of the cast, in today's melon, Bao Shangen, Lin Yun and Yu Chengen are (tentative) named. All of them are young and upcoming actors. So far, there doesn't seem to be a real female lead, just like in the novel. However, other melons name Liu Haocun or Zhang Xueying (Princess Silver) or Bao Shangen as potential candidates for the female lead. So we will have to wait for the official announcement. But it's fun to speculate!
Another rumor I saw is that my beloved Sun Zhenni (Pianran from TTEOTM) will make a guest appearance! I also wouldn't be surprised to see some of the usual suspects making another appearance next to Luo Yunxi!
Now, as someone that adore world-building, I'm particularly excited about the style of the show. It's said to be a mix of wuxia and xianxia tropes and aesthetics, and this is a main reason that so many platforms are interested in it. We get some indicators from the poster.
Let's look at the details of the official poster:
Tumblr media
White hair, I repeat, white hair! The main character Tang Lici is described as ruthless and is famous for his long white hair! I'm so excited for this. Are we finally going to see Luo Yunxi in white hair for a drama?!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also love the color scheme of white, peach and black of the poster. It looks like there is a black flute stuck in his belt. He is also holding a bowl of food, maybe a seashell? That looks too random, to be a coincidence. So he likely will use musical cultivation as a weapon.
Tumblr media
I'm not sure how the dragon relates to his character. Maybe he is one, maybe he is called one? Either way, it would be Luo Yunxi's third time playing a dragon, after Wangye and Runyu. This one seems to be related to water again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In his most recent interview, Luo Yunxi mentioned, that he is already preparing for the role, learning lines and diving into his character. I can't wait for more!

Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) Masterpost
Tumblr media
Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) is a Vocal synth (Vocaloid and SynthV) music project. It consists of songs themed around different figures throughout Chinese history. The project is a collaboration between different artists and creatives, with music and videos featuring prominent traditional Chinese elements. The project's title translates to "The Records of Magnificence of the Wangchuan" - In Chinese mythology, "Wangchuan" (or River of Forgetting) is a river in the Underworld that can rid one of their past life's memories, similar to the river Lethe.
A mobile game adaptation has also been developed by NetEast. Unfortunately, I haven't played it so I can't give much insight on it. However, I assume that its premise is similar to that of the idea behind the project as a whole: all these historical figures meeting each other in the Underworld after they died. Maybe.
You can find all the songs on Bilibili. The official Weibo can be found here. The game's website, which includes all characters appearing so far in the game, can be found here, and its Weibo can be found here.
(If you prefer YouTube, I've also put together a handy playlist. Please know that most of these videos are reposts though, so please watch the original Bilibili MVs if you can!)
This blog is where I will be posting everything I feel like I need to say about the songs in this project. A lot of it is lifted from my Twitter account but will be in much more detail. Note that I probably won't touch collab songs, or songs that don't focus solely on the project's own characters.
Disclaimer: I do not speak Chinese, nor am I an expert on Chinese history. Therefore, I cannot reliably translate the lyrics to these songs, nor my words should be taken as gospel. I am merely a nerd gushing about my hyperfixation.

international tea trip
parker & @lgchyoseop attend to important matters in taipei
Supposedly Parker had been to Taiwan once when he was very very young, at least according to his parents, but to actually count that seems like a stretch. While his body was there, his consciousness definitely wasn’t; if not, then he probably wouldn’t be as excited to have some free time around Taipei. Or maybe he would. Regardless, almost from the moment Type Zero touched down, he had one thing on his mind — bubble tea —  and he was going to drag Hyoseop along with him.
“Oldest bubble tea shops,” he says out loud in English while he types those same words into his phone. Naturally, his sisters made it a point for he to get boba while in Taiwan. It was probably an international crime not to! (It was not a crime)
“According to this, Chun Shui Tang is the oldest shop, but this post recommends a place called Lettea.. and Taichung… also a few others..” He’s speaking in Korean now by pure habit. He looks up from his phone to look up at his groupmate with a smile and a shrug— honestly, they had a bit of time to kill, but he wasn’t sure if it was worth hitting up every place they could. “You have a preference?”

Bubble tea’s Taiwan origin story: economic boom, national identity and betrayal
At Chun Shui Tang teahouse in central Taiwan’s Taichung City, the perfect cup of bubble tea is boiled down to a science.
A tea barista fills a tall glass with black tapioca pearls 2 inches from the bottom. She scoops 1 inch of ice into a cocktail shaker, pours in tea, cane syrup and shakes. When the mixture is poured out, there is 1 centimeter of foam on top. Chun Shui Tang’s managing director Angela Liu said tapioca pearls are tossed out after three hours and a new batch is cooked to maintain a good chewy texture.
Her father, who is also the teahouse’s founder, Liu Han-Chieh, created the sweet, chewy tea back in the 1980s, which was a radical departure from how tea was consumed at the time — mostly hot and plain.

Bubble Tea Research - history
Bubble tea is a combination of milk, tea and a gelatinous candy either made from tapioca or fruit jelly. It has gained a few names besides bubble tea, such as boba and black pearl tea.
When it comes to who or how bubble tea was invented there are many stories, 2 of them are the most acknowledged ones, the first being that Ms. Lin Hsiu Hui added sweet tapioca pearls into regular milk. This happened in store called Chun Shui Tang Teahouse in Taizhong.
The idea of adding the tapioca pearls was a random idea that was spurred on by her sense of nostalgia as tapioca pearls were a common snack and she missed eating it like she did when she was a child.
Tapioca balls were actaullay a traditional sweet dish in Taiwan and was pretty common
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
The second story depicts that a man named Tu Tsong-He inventedit in Hanlin Tea House in Tainan, a city in Southern Taiwan. He added tapioca pearls into plain milk tea which looked like pearls in the milk and was later gave the drink the name pearl milk tea. Later they added brown sugar and switched to black tapioca pearls.
There is no official confirmation as to which story is the one who created bubble tea.
Bubble tea gained popularity in east and south east Asia during the 90's and during this period bubble tea was just being introduced to American culture.

There is no “shortcut” for new tea drinks to go overseas
Tumblr media
For China's new tea brands represented HE Tuber  by HeyTea, developed countries such as Europe, the United States, Canada and Australia are the second battlefield for "going overseas" after Southeast Asia: whether they are international students, new immigrants or local residents, they all have a strong interest in tea drinks. , the new tea drink market is growing rapidly.
Long before the Heytea London store was finalized, Mixue Bingcheng had already opened a store in Sydney, Australia. On February 12 this year, on the first day of trial operation of the Mixue Bingcheng Sydney CBD store, the store was full of people and the turnover exceeded 24,000 yuan. Due to strong demand and lack of manpower, stores occasionally encounter problems such as adding wrong toppings and juices.
For tea brands with high popularity and consumer recognition in China, entering the markets of developed countries where overseas students and new immigrants gather can be said to be "bringing their own traffic". They can quickly accumulate popularity with Chinese consumers and then launch it through Attract local consumers through localized products, social media operations and other methods.
However, at present, new tea drink brands in mainland China want to open up markets in developed countries such as Europe, the United States, Canada and Australia. Their biggest competitors are the many milk tea and fruit tea brands from Taiwan, China - the road that new tea drink brands in mainland China are about to take in new markets, China Taiwan’s bubble milk tea brands have been through it before.
In the 1980s and 1990s, as Taiwan residents immigrated to Europe and the United States, they also brought the unique food drink pearl milk tea to these countries. Whether it is the older generation Chun Shui Tang or the new generation COCO, there are many brands, all of which have more stores and higher recognition overseas.
In the past few decades, Taiwanese milk tea has become more and more recognized in Europe and the United States. Many celebrities have shared their experiences of drinking milk tea on social media. For example, after Bill Gates was recommended a cup of bubble milk tea by Chinese actor Simu Liu at the "Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People" award dinner, he posted on Twitter: "I have added bubble milk tea to my favorite beverage list. middle".
Celebrity effect has made milk tea popular in Europe and the United States. Europeans and Americans who were accustomed to drinking coffee began to become curious about this oriental beverage and were gradually attracted to it. According to Google Trends statistics, in 2021, searches for milk tea-related terms in the United States increased by more than 760%.
In addition to Taiwanese milk tea, tea brands founded in Europe and the United States are also strong competitors to new tea drinks in mainland China.
Recently, Ume Tea, a Ume Tea store founded by Chinese engineer Li Jiachun and rooted in the Bay Area, received millions of dollars in seed round financing. This financing was solely invested by iFly.vc Capital and is mainly used for team improvement, supply chain improvement, product iteration, store expansion, etc.
Ume's products include fruit tea, Oreo milk tea, surprise cup series with toys, etc. Compared with mainland overseas brands, Ume understands the local market better, has established a relatively stable supply chain, and has a higher degree of localization: it does not deliberately choose areas where Chinese people live, and non-Asian customers account for about 40%. On Tik There are high traffic on platforms such as Tok and Instagram.
At present, Ume's nine stores are all directly operated stores, all of which have achieved profitability, and the payback period is no more than one year.
As for Heytea, although it is more popular among mainland students, considering the exchange rate difference and higher labor costs abroad, the price of Heytea overseas is bound to be slightly higher than in China.
In Singapore stores, the price of Heytea's signature products reaches 5.8 to 5.9 Singapore dollars, which is about 30 yuan, which is about 9 yuan higher than in China. It is not difficult to imagine that in the UK, where the exchange rate difference is more obvious, a cup of Heytea may be a luxury in a certain sense for international students.
The higher prices overseas make it difficult for international students to regard new tea drinks as daily consumption. Therefore, new tea drinks must be localized.
Compared with Heytea, which has just gone abroad, Taiwanese milk tea, which has been overseas for many years, and Ume, which was founded in the United States, are relatively mature in terms of localization. Taiwanese pearl milk tea has become the most popular type of milk tea among young people in Europe and America, and Ume has also attracted local consumers with its unique decoration style and operational activities.
Most European and American consumers prefer high-sweetness drinks, and the model of Heytea cheese milk cap + cold brew tea + fresh fruit is relatively light. It will take time to attract more European and American consumers through localization adjustments; in addition, Heytea is The application of social media operations, peripheral co-branding and other methods that are customary in China also requires more thinking, practice and running-in when applied to foreign markets.
In 2018, the British "Economist" magazine once wrote an article about new tea drinks, regarding Heytea as a strong competitor to Starbucks, and believed that the wave of bubble cheese tea set off by Heytea may bring about "the rebirth of the global tea industry." .
However, in the following years, Heytea expanded aggressively domestically but tended to be cautious and conservative in overseas markets. It is still the milk tea brands from Taiwan, China that shape European and American consumers’ perception of milk tea.
It is not too late for Heytea to go overseas, but it is obvious that it has missed the best opportunity.
For Heytea and many mainland tea brands, Europe and the United States are second overseas markets with huge growth potential. However, to truly turn the European and American markets into the second growth curve, we still need to face difficult challenges.
