Confines: Work Up The Blood (2021)
I can’t think of anyone I follow from Brooklyn who's done more for it than anyone else. David Castillo co-owns (one of my favorite go-to’s) Saint Vitus in Greenpoint, is a member of metalcore group Primitive Weapons, and curated Age Of Quarantine, one of the most entertaining streams I’ve ever listened to. I thought nothing of anything when I saw Confines open up Cold Waves’ second night. But the jaw-dropping shock I felt when I learned that he was Confines was one of the biggest mind-boggling revelations I had this year! On top of that, Castillo had Hospital Production’s Kris Lapke / Alberich produce his album and had Sannhet’s AJ Annunziata do the design, plus his bandmate Chris Enriquez played in one of my best friend’s bands The Repercussions and in hardcore's On The Might of Princes whom I saw chapters ago. Unbelievable. If I was playing jackpot bingo, I’d cover the whole card and win the fucking jackpot.
Paraphrasing a passage from To Kill A Mockingbird, Confines / Castillo created Work Up The Blood as his vision and interpretation of all the goings-on in Brooklyn’s nightlife. Greenpoint has a noticeable industrial / synthwave / metalcore contingency, so of course it has to slay and it does. There’s no track that lets go of its notion of Greenpoint’s night-time wickedness kicking off with “Oro Y Muerte”, the first of five straight songs of stormy weather. The factory is always open and in motion producing pounding, floor-trembling rhythms; always striking and sweeping. A statement such as “Every Day The Warehouse Shook” could indicate the surroundings of physically and excruciatingly loud dance parties or even the madness city residents endure dealing with loud practice space. Or you could find a clue on “Concrete Club” where soundbytes of Fear City reference the out-of-control crime, rampant poverty and ruin of Sixties-to-Eighties New York City; while all throughout Castillo’s screams and shouts instill a feeling of post-midnight panic and dread.
Castillo / Confines now has a handful of releases under his belt. It’s only right that he stakes his claim for good and leave more of mark that he already has.

What I read in January!
Oops, looks like I let things slip away from me again. But to be fair to me, I've been having a very busy and stressful time lately.
Songs of a Dead Dreamer, Thomas Ligotti ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Red Tower (ss), Thomas Ligotti ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Our Share of Night, Mariana Enriquez ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Wild Shore, Kim Stanley Robinson ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Grimscribe, Thomas Ligotti ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Book of Cthulu 2 Anthology ⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Mask of Apollo, Mary Renault ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ghosts Galore, Fiona Glass ⭐️
Treasure & Dirt, Chris Hammer ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
South (nf), Earnest Shackleton ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Mangrove Legacy, Kit Marlowe ⭐️
The Other Boleyn Girl, Philippa Gregory ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Red Dragon, Thomas Harris ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Book of Horrors, Diane Hoh ⭐️⭐️
A few great reads this month, and a few clunkers.
I've never read Thomas Ligotti before, though I'd been meaning to find his work ever since I watched the first season of True Detective and read some of the criticisms of the writing (accusations that the script was heavily derivative if not outright copying significant portions of Ligotti's works). Some of his stories I enjoyed more than others, but I think he has a distinct style and approach to his work which makes it worthwhile checking out if you like weird/ horror fiction.
The Mask of Apollo is another stand-out, which I suspected it would be. I've been rationing out Mary Renault's books for a few years now, because each one is so delicious that I know I'm going to be sad when I've gotten through them all and don't have anything but rereads to look forward to. Mind you, rereading is a fine thing in itself, but there's nothing quite like the first read. This book is another banger, it sits much more closely with The Last of the Wine, than it does with either The King Must Die, or The Bull from the Sea, in that it is less mythological retelling than it is a recreation of the private personal lives of individuals. It has a deep, compelling way with character and place and really evokes a sense of an individual living in the midst of great historical events, without the historical nature of the events making the plot feel like a foregone conclusion.
And now a reread! It's actually been several years since I last read Red Dragon (since I finished my thesis! wow!) and on reread I remembered why I was immediately hooked the first time I read it. Thomas Harris is another one of those authors who has the skill of crafting characters that feel real and vital on the page, seething with their own foibles and grotesqueries, but also with their piquant moments of grace or kindness. A strong sense of humanity in the characters. As well, of course, as his lush and awful (as in awe-inspiring, not the other thing!) prose. I love these books so much.
Anyways, that's that for January!

nf= non-fiction

Julie Christmas - Not Enough (2023)
“I started to sing Not Enough while riding in a car on the highway in Brooklyn and seeing all these water towers along the tops of the buildings. Some of them are so beautiful!
But I like the dented ones just as much. The sun was blazing hot that day and throwing crazy shadows under the towers. In my head, for a minute, It struck me that the towers were very, very brave.
They were there ready to do what they were intended to do against incredible heat.
And more importantly, they were there all the time. If they can do it, I can do it too.
This song is now out and is released under my name but it was first written by Andrew Schneider and turned into what it is now by these incredible people: Johannes Persson, John LaMacchia, Chris Enriquez, Laura Pleasants and Tom Tierney.
Men among men!” - Julie
