A latest discovery is rewriting our understanding of Britain's Dark Ages. Confirmation of a 5th century Roman mosaic in England changes the view of a sudden collapse of Britannia’s society after the fall of the Roman Empire.
The Chedworth Roman Villa in England is at the heart of this breakthrough. Radiocarbon dating of a stunning mosaic found here reveals it dates back to the mid-5th century, long after the fall of Rome in 410 AD! This challenges the long-held belief that Europe plunged into a cultural and intellectual decline following Rome's collapse.

No idea how these pictures are gonna be rotated when I hit ‘Post’, that’s gonna be a revelation for all of us... but anyway! Went to visit an old Roman villa today with my sister and her kids. I knew the mosaics were supposed to be good, but I was still surprised at just how good they were.

Madonna and child: the focus is not on the newborn baby, whose face we cannot see, but the mother. The absolute love and tenderness expressed by her body, her hand holding the infant, her cheek pressed against his, his tiny hand on her neck - contrasts with the profound sadness of her expression, eyes downcast, thoughts far away, reflecting, we infer, on the future that awaits the beloved child. The power of the sculpture, greater still when you see it in real life, transcends the religious subject - it is very moving.
1911, by Helen Frazer Rock, in Chedworth parish church, Gloucestershire.

For Mosaic Monday, one of my favorite works is this unique depiction of Cupid as Winter, from the Chedworth Villa in Britain:
Tumblr media
It shows an impish looking Cupid, bundled up in a Celtic hooded garment called the "birrus". His cloak flies behind Him in place of wings, as He darts off to some unknown mischief.
Note the Late Roman mosaic patterns here that would later develop into Medieval "Celtic knotwork".
Part of what draws me so much to this mosaic is its rare depiction of Celtic clothing, and the way Cupid got integrated into the local culture.
People often conceptualize a hard break between polytheist Antiquity and Christian Medieval times, or between "Roman" and "Celtic" cultures. But this art from Sub-Roman Britain (4th to 5th C.) challenges that dichotomy, showing a fascinating transition between the two, and a fusion of cultures and styles that would foreshadow Medieval Insular art.
I've been wanting to take a stab at pixel art, and I thought the adorable Cupid here looked almost straight out of an old video game like Zelda or something. I also figured, "what is a mosaic, but physical pixel art?" So I did my best to recreate it in pixel form!
I learned pretty quickly there are actually a lot of differences between mosaic and pixel art (lol), and I'm sure this could be improved on in a lot of ways, but it was a fun project anyways:

GBN – Britain’s News Channel By George Bunn January 17, 2024 New archaeological research has found that the impact of the Roman Empire lasted much longer than scientists thought.
