NEW AT ECLECTICA this month - on the California writer Delicious Tacos.
The nom de plume of an almost certainly muscular straight white male domiciled in or around West Hollywood, Delicious Tacos (DT) made a spicy name for himself offering dating advice to frustrated gents on the capital-I Internet, the way Charles Bukowski made a name for himself doing the same for colicky bums in the stapled mags. Like Bukowski, DT delivers a dangerously lucid fictional version of his barbarous drunken self. A fiction the impressionable male reader, with an underdeveloped sense of context, dares to imitate in real life. Unlike Bukowski's Henry Chinaski, a child of the Great Depression, who, when he arrived in a new town, sought out the poor people section, the Delicious Tacos character, a child of the Reagan/Clinton boom, is a sloppy yet optimized knowledge worker: when DT arrives in a new town, he heads to the Capital One Café across the street from the CorePower, takes a seat at the Warrior 2 window, gets excited by the bubble butts, remembers porn ruined his sexuality, and fires up a new post....

2000AD Prog 2350 Out Wednesday 9/20/2023 featuring DEATH GAME 2049; Chicago Library Bomb Threats
Tumblr media
Hello there. It's been some time. I've gotten pretty lazy with this blog. Hopefully that changes soon.
This Wednesday, in print in the UK and digitally worldwide, 2000AD Prog 2350 will be released. This is the year's big crossover issue (along with Judge Dredd Megazine 460, also out Wednesday), although no overarching storyline this year. Instead, thematically, it's a What If? situation where 2000AD merged with another title, Battle Action, and what strips came from that.
Tumblr media
My own contribution is Death Game 2049, an update of what was a very popular strip in Action, called Death Game 1999, an insane violent Rollerball knockoff where the sport itself was a weird mix of hockey and pinball. This was also the very strip I was actually commissioned to write for 2000AD, on the back of War Birds. And this is what got me in the door.
Tumblr media
Pencils & inks by Nick Dyer, colors by John Charles, letters by my old mate Jim Campbell. I hope you get it, and enjoy it.
(How lazy have I gotten? I forgot to post that I ALSO had a Future Shock in Prog 2340, "A Temp Problem," with art by Gateway City's Russell Mark Olson, letters by Simon Bowland. You can still get it digitally, and I'm not sure which 4-pack it'll be in with Diamond. I also had an interview printed in the previous issue of the Judge Dredd Megazine, #459, and also featured in the story about Prog 2350 in this month's issue of British sci-fi magazine SFX. Whew.)
As of this moment I have one more 2000AD story in 2023 but I can't talk more about that... yet.
----
Real quick.
Last week, there were multiple bomb threats in and around the Chicago area. Against libraries. That's right, public libraries. Including the one my own daughter works at (AND the one she did previously).
We all know who's doing this, and why. And speaking as a writer, who loves libraries and believes in them, as well as a Goddamn Human Being:
Anyone who would threaten to bomb libraries is walking filth of the Earth, and deserves to be shunned from society in general. Hope you're proud of yourselves, because Gods knows, nobody else is. Fuck you.

Noble girls received confusingly mixed messages about the clothing they should choose. The clearest Biblical guidance came from the author of 1 Timothy who had advised that ‘women should dress themselves modestly and decently in suitable clothing, not with their hair braided, or with gold, pearls or expensive clothes, but with good works’. This provided justification for generations of Christian authors who associated fine clothing with sinfulness. Jean de Meun, whose Roman de la Rose was to be found in many fifteenth-century noble houses, asserted that ‘a woman who wants to be beautiful . . . wants to wage war on Chastity’. Yet devotional books routinely indicated the high status of virgin martyrs and the Virgin Mary herself by depicting them in opulent and elegant garments, like the cloth of gold dress that St Cecilia wore over her hair shirt. The upper classes believed that ‘in a well-ordered society, consumption patterns would reflect the hierarchy of status’. In 1363 parliament had even introduced sumptuary laws outlining the types of clothing permissible to those of various stations. Gentlemen whose lands were worth less than £ 100 annually were forbidden to wear silk, embroidered clothing, gold jewellery ‘or any manner of fur’, and their wives and children likewise. Knights whose land was valued at less than 200 marks annually were forbidden to wear the most expensive wools and furs or cloth of gold, and even those receiving £ 1,000 a year could only wear ermine or cloth embroidered with jewels in their headwear. Although the legislation was repealed just over a year later, as Christopher Dyer has argued, it indicates the legislators’ ‘assumption that the higher aristocracy ought to wear’ opulent apparel that distinguished them from their inferiors.
One author who tried to steer a helpful middle course was Christine de Pisan, the daughter of an Italian physician and widow of one of the secretaries of Charles V of France...In her manual, Le Trésor de la Cité des Dames, Christine advised ‘the wise princess’ to ensure that ‘the clothing and the ornaments of her women, though they be appropriately beautiful and rich, be of a modest fashion, well-fitting and seemly, neat and properly cared for. There should be no deviation from this modesty nor any immodesty in the matter of plunging necklines or other excesses.'
-J.L. Laynesmith, "Cecily Duchess of York"

The Times:
The King and Queen and the Prince and Princess of Wales are on the invitation list for what will be the society wedding of the year, when Hugh Grosvenor, 32, marries Olivia Henson, 30, at Chester Cathedral on June 7.
But Harry and Meghan will be notably absent. Grosvenor, one of Britain’s richest men and closest friends of the royal family, has decided to exclude the Sussexes to avoid a family clash in the House of Windsor.
It is thought that Prince William is in the running to be best man for Grosvenor, a godfather to Prince George, ten, who is also expected to attend.
Harry and Meghan’s exclusion will a particular blow to the couple because Grosvenor is so close to Harry that it can be revealed that he is also a godfather to the Sussexes’ son, Prince Archie.
The Sussexes have not publicly named Archie’s godparents, but they include Tiggy Pettifer, a former nanny to William and Harry, Mark Dyer, a former equerry to Charles, and Harry’s friend Charlie van Straubenzee.

One thing that struck me from Mary Dyer's Wikipedia page was that she named her kids William, Samuel, Henry, William, Mahershallalhashbaz, Mary and Charles. One of these things is not like the others XD
It does smack of someone who had a difficult labor and wanted a little revenge on the kid :D

On the one hand, I am ride or die for Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles. On the other, this is just all too literal and specific and cheesy for me. But again I am always so so very glad to see them, even if I’m more a Troy Dyer and Dan Rydell fan than Knox and Todd.

"If he was to decide to issue Letters Patent to remove their titles, it would not be motivated by vindictiveness, more an acknowledgement that Harry’s book has revealed what a “poison chalice” a royal title has proven for his second son and his wife, according to a source close to the King."
This is from Roya's article. What do you think, Plant?
Let's see, Roya got the first part ("A royal source, who has the King's ear...") part from Harry. I will bet real money that source is Mark Dyer, because Roya also says the source "knows William well." Then another Harry source says "they have to invite them in before the coronations." Not sure who that is. Then someone suggested Welby. That sounds insane to me, so I think the second royal source is not and aide and is not very close to the palace. No one with any palace advisory experience would suggest Welby. Maybe someone from Andrew's side?
So I think Roya got that from Montecito and went to the palace for comment. That's when a royal source came out with the "they have to now be quiet and go on with their thing in America." Roya says that's a palace condition for the summit to take place, but that's not what it sounds like to me. It sounds to me like they are just telling them to stick to America.
Then we get to the section you quote about the titles. I think that's Charles reminding Harry that two can play the spin game and Harry's book gives him the rationale he needs to remove everyone's titles.
Then we get another royal source talking about a support role. I think that's also coming from Harry.
Then there's another source noting that Harry's goalposts are constantly shifting and appeasement is not going to last long. That's probably a legit palace source. Then there's a friend of the King's talking about care packages. That's probably a legit source.
Then a close friend of "William and Harry's" (probably just Harry) warns Will that Harry will bitch constantly if kept outside. Well, no shit, Sherlock. He will also bitch constantly if brought inside. That's the problem.
