The Wonder 3 controversy (W3事件)

In March 1964, Osamu Tezuka pitched a manga idea to Weekly Shonen Magazine that he hoped would turn into his third anime for his animation studio, Mushi Productions. The manga would be a spy thriller entitled Wonder 3, and would follow a detective solving crimes with an alien squirrel named Bokko.

However, in June of the same year, Tezuka learned of an anime in production at TBS (Tokyo broadcasting station) entitled Space Boy Soran. The anime followed a cyborg boy named Soran, who helped fight crime and save the earth with an alien squirrel named Chappy. Tezuka was shocked when he heard the news, as the pitch for Wonder 3 and the design for Bokko were not shown to the public.

Osamu Tezuka immediately opened an investigation at Mushi Productions, and found out several of his animators also worked at TBS. Several staff members of Mushi Pro were either fired of left as they were threatened to be arrested for industrial espionage. While it is not known to this day who exactly leaked the information, it was likely an accidental slip up from a former animator and not a malicious act.

Due to how far Space Boy Soran was into production compared to Wonder 3, Tezuka had to completely scrap the spy thriller concept and start from scratch. In the end, he made Wonder 3 about three aliens invading earth and taking the form of a rabbit, a duck, and a horse. Bokko from the original spy concept was kept, though she was redesigned to be a rabbit and not a squirrel.

Osamu Tezuka also changed the magazine Wonder 3 was published in from Weekly Shonen Magazine to Weekly Shonen Sunday, as the Space Boy Soran manga that was being produced the same time as the anime was running in Weekly Shonen Magazine.

So, last year for Star Wars Day, I also made some OCs...and I've got more I made this year too! Matelrie was based on the female Ewok Galactic Pal doll, since my brother gifted me one for Christmas. Dolicha is the daughter of the leader of a separate sector of the Hutt criminal underground. Her father makes bank, but he doesn't want his daughter caught in this mess either. As such, he spoils her with luxuries and parties to keep her far away from his work. Now stationed on Naboo, she spends her time throwing parties and collecting art thanks to her very generous allowance. Despite first appearances, she is surprisingly polite and jovial, with amazing tastes in gourmet foods and even more amazing tastes in art. Even though others in her society caste might say otherwise, she is a surprising patron of Keelani's work. She is also a very avid animal lover and part of the same sect of the Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts as Dendara. If there's one thing that Dolicha loves the most in the world, it's Piddies! The Hutt heiress' pet Voorpak, Dolicha might love all animals, but Piddies is her absolute favorite. Far more on the side of "lap warmer" than "guard animal", Piddies is content with the love and pampering her owner gives her, and would much rather stay put where her owner is instead of doing anything else. However, with Fili visiting, this has started to rile her up and cause "natural animal instincts" to lash out. Turns out she's faster than her fluffy coat would make you think.

C4-PY, aka "Chappy", is the leader of a sector of the Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts. Yes, you read that right, the droid's the leader. After the former president of the sector disappeared under still-mysterious circumstances, his will had it that Chappy would be the leader in his stead. Surprisingly, this hasn't changed much of anything, it turns out the former president was basically the same as Chappy. Kind, enthusiastic, but very eccentric and bumbling, if it wasn't for his assistant, he would probably been destroyed eighty times over at this point. And speaking of that assistant... Matelrie was originally just a shy Ewok living on the Forest Moon of Endor. In tune with nature like the other Ewoks, she was always a bit nervous about defending herself, but always was willing to learn about the flora and fauna of her world, but she was slowly losing new things to learn about. A chance encounter with the Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts led to her quickly taking up their offer of employment. While she was originally employed under the president's steed, she has now found herself under Chappy's employment. Not that this has changed much, she's still basically the smart one of the duo, with her trusty data pad containing every bit of information one could want. Unbeknownst to her, she is in a rivalry. Dendara has decided that she's her rival in the field, a fact that Matelrie has no clue about.
