National Wear Red Day
Bright reds – scarlet, pillar-box red, crimson or cherry – are very cheerful and youthful. There is certainly a red for everyone. -  Christian Dior
Red. It’s more than just a color. It is powerful and scintillating. It’s even the color of that most vital fluid that pumps through our hearts. The right red dress can really fire up anyone’s appearance, making a person stand out in a crowd and demanding attention from the room.
Wearing the color red can also help to support an important cause, bringing awareness to a disease that kills hundreds of thousands of women every year: Heart Disease. National Wear Red Day is the perfect chance to help spread the word about the prevalence of heart disease, and make sure that friends and family can start taking the first steps to heart health.
History of National Wear Red Day
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute established the National Wear Red Day campaign in order to help bring awareness to the fact that approximately 650,000 people in the US die every year from heart disease, making it the most lethal disease in the United States and possibly around the world as well. And more than 25 million people are diagnosed with heart disease.
The causes of heart disease are many and they can affect every stratum of culture and civilization. Heart disease isn’t just one condition but is associated with many different health concerns. It can be caused by diabetes, a lack of exercise, high cholesterol, blood pressure, alcohol consumption and a few other issues that have all been linked to diseases of the heart.
What is rather concerning, but also encouraging, is that nearly all of these causes are preventable. Still, since people continue to die by the hundreds of thousands each year, it is necessary to get the word out about ways to prevent this disease and live a healthier lifestyle.
When it comes to vulnerability to heart disease, age is certainly a contributing factor. But even though the susceptibility to heart disease triples with every new decade of age, fatty streaks can begin forming in the heart even during adolescence.
So it’s never too early to start being aware of this life-destroying disease and ensure that your life won’t be destroyed by this terrible condition. National Wear Red Day is a great opportunity to spread the word and help educate friends, family and the local community about this preventable health issue.
How to Celebrate National Wear Red Day
Observing National Wear Red Day is a great time to care about your own health as well as helping to raise awareness with friends, family and coworkers. Try out some of these ideas and then get creative with enjoying the day:
Wear Red to Raise Awareness
Of course the simplest and most obvious activity of all on this day is to put on some red. It could be anything from a red t-shirt to an entire red business suit. Those who don’t have much red in their wardrobes can still participate with accessories such as a red bowtie, red earrings, or red sneakers!
The most important thing about National Wear Red Day is to make sure other people know the motivation behind the day.
Let Others Know About National Wear Red Day
To make the day even more effective at encouraging people to take steps to avoid heart disease, set up a little marketing campaign in advance of the day. Make posters or flyers that can be distributed at work. Send an email to friends and family. Share information at school or the public library. Visit the Go Red for Women website for more resources and help with getting the word out.
Host a National Wear Red Day Event
Get a group of friends, family members or neighbors together and host a fun Wear Red event. Don’t forget to have guests wear red. Serve a variety of healthy foods that are red, and be sure to take some time to share about where people can learn more about how to improve their heart health. A perfect way to make the party more meaningful would be to ask guests to provide a donation to a worthy charity such as the American Heart Association.
Get a Medical Checkup
One great way to start observing this day is by scheduling an appointment with the doctor to have a check-up on the heart and find out what advice the doctor would give. Every day that is ignored is one more opportunity for heart disease to get a stronger hold on the heart, increasing the risk of a heart attack, Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and more.
Try an Improved Diet
While making that appointment, take a good long look at what kind of food you have in your diet and see if there is some room for improvement. Most people have a few simple things they can do to improve the way they eat. National Wear Red Day is a great opportunity to make better and healthier choices to keep that heart muscle pumping happily.
Start an Exercise Regimen
National Wear Red Day is also the perfect chance to really reevaluate all of life. Use the day to start getting ready to get out and exercise, which is certainly another great way to reduce the susceptibility to heart disease. So get on your favorite red tracksuit and spread awareness of Heart Disease on National Wear Red Day!

5 + sebchal 🫶🏻🫶🏻
Hi!!! Sorry this took all day, I don't know how to write short things. Hope you enjoy! 💚
sebchal + "I guess you are right" - send me a prompt!
Charles had changed his mind no less than fifty times about whether or not he should have simply flown to Switzerland instead of driving all the way up from Monaco. He’d already spent a good sleepless night before he left weighing up the pros and cons – flying would definitely have gotten the whole thing over with whatever the outcome, but driving through the French countryside and most of Switzerland gave Charles the most time to try and prepare a speech.
(The quickest way would have been to drive to Milan and then go North, but Charles wanted all the extra seconds the universe could spare him).
He’d spent the night at a hotel in Geneva that he couldn’t remember anything about other than the luxury setting and soft sheets, Charles still wasn’t able to think about much other than his destination.
He and Seb still exchanged Christmas cards, and Charles cherished every single one, which was why he thankfully didn’t have to ask Mia to ask Britta for Sebastian’s address. Something that would have added an extra layer of embarrassment to what Charles was about to do, maybe to the point of talking himself out of it, but he was glad that the irrational part of his mind was still winning out as he threw his weekend bag into the boot of his car (not his custom Ferrari, but a rental white Audi. He wanted to be as inconspicuous as possible).
Charles had expected the weather to be nicer for the second week of August, but instead the air was cool and the sky a barely there grey as he set off on the next leg of his journey.
He didn’t realise that he was in love with Sebastian until their last race as teammates, and every day since he’d kept his feelings buried so deep down there would be moments Charles would almost forget they were there. But then he’d see an Aston Martin drive past him, or a butterfly hovering on a flower and they would come back to the surface almost ten time stronger.
And now that Sebastian only had nine races left in his F1 career, for better or worse Charles decided he had to go to Switzerland to finally tell him how he felt.
The sky darkened the further into Switzerland Charles drove, and by the time he was 20 kilometres past Bern thick heavy raindrops started to batter the windscreen. He briefly considered pulling over at a service station but there was a small fire in his chest telling him to keep going, to keep driving.
Even in the pouring rain, Switzerland was beautiful. The deep green forests, the towering mountains that put the ones in Monaco to shame, the deep blue lakes that looked so much like Sebastian’s eyes it was borderline unnerving. Charles knew from the handful of pictures Seb had shown him over the years why Seb called the country home. There was a split second where Charles felt like he might be able to call it home too, but he gripped his hands tighter round the steering wheel to snap himself out of it.
As the pit of his stomach kept telling him, there was no guarantee Sebastian would now or ever love Charles back.
He allowed himself ten minutes at a service station just outside Lucerne for an espresso and a pep talk. After all, how hard would it really be to tell an ex-teammate that Charles was so in love with him he felt like bursting into flames if they were stood too close together.
Back in the driver’s seat, Charles gently brushed his hands down his navy button up shirt before resting them in his lap, allowing himself one deep breath before starting the car again, and driving away.
The closer he got to Sebastian’s house the more his throat seemed to tighten, to the point where he almost couldn’t breathe when Charles finally turned off the motorway and the satnav told him he would be at his destination in five short kilometres.
At some point the intensity of the rain had decreased to a light drizzle, Charles barely noticed it as he stepped out of the car but that might have been because he was fixated on the very unassuming front door to Sebastian’s house.
It was a dark wood with black metal fixtures screwed into it, and a tiny square glass window near the top. Charles was tall enough to look through it but he couldn’t see anything, as the rain started to fall heavier once more.
His whole mouth felt dry to the point he wasn’t sure if he would be able to get a word out let alone a sentence, and he realised that he’d left his coat in the car but he couldn’t turn and get it now when he was so close. Instead Charles slowly curled his right hand into a fist, and he knocked his knuckles against the wood three times.
All Charles could hear was the sound of the rain hitting the ground.
What was he thinking?! He should have called first, or at least texted Seb back in Lucerne to see if he was at home. For all Charles’ luck Sebastian was back in Heppenheim visiting his family and friends, or on holiday somewhere with someone that wasn’t Charles.
Why did he drive all this way in the hope that Sebastian already loved him in return?
Charles forced down a large gulp and bit down on his lip as he took two small steps away from the door. He didn’t want to leave, but maybe he had to. Maybe he would be better off letting his dreams of Sebastian go, maybe it would be easier this way.
He had just moved his left foot to turn himself round when the door opened.
“Charles?” And there Seb was, his gorgeous blue eyes wide as he looked Charles up and down in complete disbelief.
“Seb.” Charles said his name with a sigh of relief and a bright smile. He was right there, barely two metres away. If Charles tried hard enough he could probably smell Seb’s aftershave alongside the rain.
“What are you doing here?” “I love you.”
They both said at the exact same time, their faces fell mirroring each other perfectly.
“I’m sorry.” Charles said quickly. “I didn’t… I couldn’t keep it in anymore. I had to tell you before you left.”
Seb’s eyes glanced past Charles at the Audi with its French licence plate, and quickly put two and two together.
“You…” The hand that had been rested against the door frame fell to Seb’s side. He was wearing a light grey crewneck that Charles was sure he’d seen Seb wear on multiple factory visits to Maranello paired with dark jeans and navy socks. “You drove all the way here?”
“I know it’s stupid.” Charles wasn’t sure if he was speaking about his feelings or his life choices. “I couldn’t tell you over the phone, I wanted to see you before Spa because if I don’t tell you now I don’t think I ever will. Because in time I’ll be able to live with not winning the title this year but I not if I say goodbye to you without you knowing how I feel.” The words tumbled out of his mouth almost as fast as the rain was falling from the sky. Charles briefly panted to regain his breath while his heart continued to hammer against his ribcage. He was soaked through now, but he didn’t care. He already knew that Seb turning him down would be worse. Clothes could dry but broken hearts were always harder to fix.
Sebastian blinked slowly, not once had his eyes left Charles’ face since he clocked the rental car parked in his driveway. His eyes were still wide, they looked like an ocean Charles would happily down in.
It was only when Charles realised that Seb still hadn’t said anything at all, that he opened his moth to start forming an apology, only to be cut off by Sebastian lurching forwards to cup his warm hands around Charles’ jaw as he tilted his head down to kiss him.
It was a fairly chaste kiss, but it was more than enough.
“You need to get inside.” Seb said quickly after he pulled away, his eyes darted all over Charles sodden clothes. “You should have worn a coat!”
Charles’ head now felt so light he had to grip onto Seb’s forearms out of fear he was about to float away.
“I guess you are right.” He said with a lazy smile, and he let Sebastian pull him inside the warm house. “I have a bag in the car-” Charles said as Sebastian shut the door behind them.
“Later.” Seb said firmly, pulling Charles in for a longer, deeper kiss.

The Spiral [Lio Meier]- Part 2
Tumblr media
ICYMI, Part 1 is here.
Word count: 2.4k
Emma Meier sits alone on the dock of her and Timo’s house in Switzerland. Her feet are curled up under her thighs as she looks out at the glassy water. It is early. Their teenage twins are still asleep and Timo had gone out for a quick run before she made her escape down here. She enjoys the stillness of the morning here. It reminds her of how lucky they are to live in Switzerland.
Weight of another person makes the dock creak. She knows those footsteps belong to the love of her life.
“Coffee?” Timo asks, holding a cup down, over her shoulder. She grabs it without her eyes leaving the lake. His fingers smooth over her pony tail then he sits beside her. His feet go into the lake, a shiver trailing up his body at how cold the water is for the end of summer.
Gentle slurps of coffee are the only disturbance to the quiet lake morning. Emma and Timo have spent thousands of mornings here together in content silence. Timo wishes he could have another morning like that with her, but there is something his wife needs to know.
“Em.” Timo calls softly. She turns to face him. He looks extremely uncomfortable. “I really don’t want to tell you this, but…” He sighs, running a hand over his hair. He glances out at the glassy, lake surface, having a difficult time focusing on her face. “I ran by Lee’s place earlier and he is gone. His place is empty. There is a rental sign on the window. His car is gone… I think he went back to Jersey.”
“No.” It comes sputtering out of her mouth. Her coffee cup slams down onto the dock, brown liquid sloshing over. It drips into the lake below. “No.” She begins to stand up. Timo quickly follows. “He did not leave here without speaking to us! No, he did not!” She slaps his chest. “Fix this! You have to fix this!”
“Baby, he is grown up.” Timo sighs, gathering her into his arms when she begins to sob into her hands. “I can’t make him come back here. I can’t make him pick up the phone. We have to hope he is listening to our messages.” He sighs.
“He is not!” She screams, shoving away from him. “If he was, he would not be on that fucking plane!” Timo purses his lips. These outbursts of anger have been common since Lio walked out of their home weeks ago. “Timo.” She wails, hunching over as she begins to sob harder. He rubs her back as she struggles to breathe through her tears.
“What if he never talks to us again? What if..” Emma closes her eyes, rocked by the pain. “What if he never wants to see us again? What if he has an entire life we never get to be a part of!?” Tears fill Timo’s eyes at how devastated his wife is. IT wasn’t long ago he had these same concerns about him and Liv. It kills him that he can’t fix this. That he can’t get through to Lio, even when he visited him at training a few days ago. Emma doesn’t know. He didn’t tell her because he thought it would be a moot point. But Timo also thought he made it really fucking clear with Lio what needed to be done before he left.
“Lio here?” Timo asks as he walks into the gym. The trainer nods.
“Out back.” He tosses a thumb over this shoulder. Timo rounds the corner, seeing his son flipping a big, tractor tire down the back alley.
“Lio.” The frustration in his voice is evident. Timo is over this pout fest from his oldest. He isn’t sure he can handle any more tears from Emma over what has been happening. It’s bad enough he missed their anniversary party. Now, Lio is missing from all their family pictures and Emma is beside herself at not having a shot of the entire family for their Christmas card. Lio looks over his shoulder at the sound of his name, then rolls his eyes. The tire smacks the ground aggressively with a final flip.
“Gee dad, only you would think me avoiding your calls means show up here.”
Timo laughs sarcastically as he approaches his son. He reaches a large hand out, balling up Lio’s sweaty shirt and launching him into the concrete wall. Lio’s strong back hits with a heavy thud that knocks the breath from him. Timo pins him up against the wall, getting right in his face.
“Cut the shit right now.” Lio gulps. His dad is pissed. “If anyone else was treating your mother this way, they’d be smeared into the road like a dead animal.” Timo releases Lio’s shirt, smoothing it out. “But you’re our kid, so you get to live another day.” He motions for Lio to go to the bench off to his right. Lio plops down forcefully. Timo sits down with a shake of his head. “Lee, mama and I deserve a chance to speak our truth here.”
“You could have in the 15 years before now. Or in our conversation. But mama kicked me out of the house.” Lio snaps. “And you were going to beat my ass in two more seconds if I didn’t leave. More stellar parenting from you two.”
“Not our best moments, no. But also not yours.” Timo responds. Lio scoffs, crossing his arms over his chest. He looks straight out in front of him, over the buildings to the tall mountains North of them. Silence settles over the two men.  A few cars pass along the road, breaking up the quiet mountain air. Lio’s leg begins to bounce anxiously. Timo sighs, leaning back into the brick building, spreading his feet wider apart to relax into the bench.
“12:43pm on December 21st, 2023.” Timo begins softly. Lio feels his throat tighten. “The moment my life started having meaning.” Lio’s bottom lip shakes. He turns his face completely away from his dad again. “Mama showed up at my apartment and she blurted out we were pregnant and life finally had meaning. Was I scared? Yeah. Did I not want you? No. Not for even one millisecond, kid.” Tears race down Lio’s cheeks. His whole mouth quivers trying to hold back a sob. “Before mama, I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure I wanted to be a father. But then mama picked me. And so did you. And it was the only thing I wanted. Everything started to matter more. Life wasn’t defined by hockey- goals, assists, TOI. I was measured instead by being the best husband and father. I finally had purpose.”
Lio brings his hand up, wiping his tears, still not looking at his dad.
“Mama had things harder than me though. Her road was difficult before and after your were born. She was judged, very publicly for getting pregnant. Called awful things. Right or wrong, she wanted to protect you from how badly that hurt. So, we fudged a bit of the truth.” Timo shrugs. “We didn’t think it would hurt you like it clearly has. But we were not ashamed of you. You were not a mistake. You were not an obligation. You were everything good about us wrapped up in a perfect, 8 pound baby. We loved being your parents and because of that we had three more babies. You created our entire family, Lee.” Timo puts a heavy hand on Lio’s sweaty head.
“I’m not going to sugar coat to you how hurt Mama is about what happened. You said things to her that cut deep. She is never going to forget them.” Lio leans forward to put his head into his hands. He cries harder, shoulders shaking. He hates himself for what he said to her. He didn’t mean it. He was so upset, lashing out at the deep pain and shame he felt in his bones. “The longer you take to start making repairs with her, the more we all hurt.” He rubs at his son’s back. “You need to start taking ownership of your choices. Be accountable for your words and actions and how they effect the people who care about you. Otherwise, you’re going to lose a lot of what makes life good.”
Lio feels like he already has. His dad’s advice is coming a little too late. Timo can sense that Lio won’t be speaking any words back to him today, which is fine by him. As long as Lio has been listening; its enough for Timo.
“I love you. More than any words can express.” Timo pats Lio’s back, checking the time on his watch. “I gotta get going. Mama is having a hard day. I don’t want to be gone from her too long.”
“Dad?” Lio chokes out, trying to breathe. Timo turns back. “I’m really sorry I hurt you and mama.”
“We forgive you, buddy. Come home and see mama before you leave.”
Lio nods, seemingly in agreement.
Now, while consoling his sobbing wife on the dock, Timo replays the conversation. He had been so sure Lio would show. The pang in his chest cracks deeper than before. His throat begins to clog with tears of his own. He wraps Emma deeper into him.
“I’m so sorry, babe.”
For the first time, Timo Meier has no fix for what is happening to his family.
- - -
Lio skates his slow circles around the ice on the Prudential Center before their first battle against the Rangers in the regular season. During pre-season, Lio and/or Connor were sitting out with the rest of the starters and have yet to face each other. Tonight, Lio can’t deny the butterflies in his stomach at playing against his former best friend.
Lio glances over to the Ranger’s side of the ice, seeing Connor ripping a snap shot into the top right corner. Usually, the two would meet at center ice to stretch and bullshit before going to battle. Lio knows that tradition won’t continue tonight. Neither will Lucie and Stell coming down to give him knuckles at the glass after visiting Connor.
Fuck, he already wants this game to be over. All the distractions and tension have his focus off the ice. He thinks about how nobody is in this arena for him tonight. Liv moved to California with Luca. He ghosted his parents before he left for Switzerland and now hasn’t heard from them. Lucie won’t pick up the phone when he calls, then he gets threatening messages from Connor to leave them alone. At least he still gets to see Savannah. She has maintained a very professional relationship with him though. It’s almost like they never had a connection before he fucked things up with her. She’s polite. But so polite that it makes Lio’s throat close up at her obvious dismissal of any future together. The old Lio didn’t care. But this version of him is in love with her and it fucking sucks having to see her every day, knowing he lost her.
The only thing Lio has in his life from a year ago is hockey. And his season has started off abysmally this year. Fans are calling for him to be traded. They jokingly chant his name in his home arena after he makes a bad play. The local reporters talk about how washed up he is.
There is nothing left in the tank for Lio Meier.
He plays with no heart.
Are we sure he has any Hischier blood in him?
The Devils need to buy out his deal and move on from this orange cone.
Noise, noise, and more noise.
Lio closes his eyes, going down to one knee by a neutral zone face off dot. He leans forward, stretching out his hip flexers. He glances again at the Ranger’s side. Connor is down close to the corner. Lio’s heart leaps when he sees Stella and Lucie there. He looks away to the Devil’s bench where Savannah is taking pictures. Usually, this isn’t her role, but someone must have called in sick. He watches as she moves her camera, scanning for someone else to take a picture of. She lands on him. He drops his gaze, focusing back on his stretch, trying to get his head into the game.
Halfway into the second period, Lio is still waiting for his head to get where it needs to be.
“Come on, superstar.” Ralph, his right wing, encourages as he pats Lio’s breezers. “Plenty of game left for us.” The Devils are down 1-0 and the team needs a push. Their third line is out now, creating chaos in the Ranger’s end, hoping to set the stage for Lio’s line to go out next and put one in the back of the net.
“Meier!” Coach bellows as the Rangers send a puck down for icing. Lio and his line mates hop the boards. Lio skates to the face-off dot, ignoring Connor to his right, in front of the net. Lio is going to win the face off back to his D and go right there to fight for position in front of the goalie. This exact scenario happens, but Connor shifts off to defend the boards, so Lio is stuck in front with his defensive partner, David Carlson. Lio likes David okay, but not right now with the cross checks digging into his back and ribs.
“Fuck off.” Lio grits out, shoving at David after the goalie freezes the puck.
“You fuck off, pussy.” David snarls back. Connor comes into the scuffle, pushing David away from Lio.
“Focus. Need a big play here.” Connor mutters to his D partner.
Lio skates back to the face-off dot. This time he loses. He bursts forward to go to the corner to chase the puck, hunting David. Lio lines him up, but David raises his shoulder and knocks Lio straight in the face. The huge blow slams Lio straight back onto the ice. He is unable to brace himself for impact and his helmet hits the ice hard. The whole arena gasps. Lio tries to suck in air, feeling like he is suffocating from the force of the hit. Eventually he is able to gasp, slowly opening his eyes.
The rafters and lights of the arena morph together. Lio does a long blink, trying to make the world righten again. He feels his body becoming gelatin, fluidly losing his bearings.
“Lee? Lio!” Connor’s voice calls to him. Lio feels a glove tap the logo on his chest. “Lee, you okay, bud?” Lio looks down, seeing Connor holding his chest with his red and blue glove. “Hey! Keith!” He calls to the ref. “Lio is hurt!”
Lio groans.
And there goes hockey too.

tumblr dot edu leftists don't understand what high immigration does to a housing market as insane and lacking in vacant spots as switzerland's
this country was 6 million people in the 90s, it is now over 9 million. my hometown has 0.40% vacancy rate and i have been trying to move back there for 7 months unsuccessfully. this is the rental market; the for-sale housing market is simply completely off in the clouds for normies.
i could afford to buy a brand new bmw car in cash today if i wanted to but that money would still be 6-8 times less than what i'd need to buy a 2-bedroom flat
not to buy the flat cash, mind you. it's 6-8 times less than the down payment that would make this a serious proposal on my income. and my income is not low but above median because i am a biopharma girlie. still unfeasible without generational wealth or a (long-term to actually have pooled savings) dual income situation

4 ways How to make a successful travel investment
Tumblr media
4 ways How to make a successful travel investment
Most people's investments are their college stock and real estate, the best investments I've made are planning tickets and car rentals, so one of the most common questions asked by people is how can they afford to travel.
In the past 3 years, I've spent a lot of money on travel but on every trip, I've made I've always made the money I spend and often very profitable so the first thing for me is that you've got purpose travel we all have trips because it's fun and interesting, but when you are planning where you want to go, think of multiple goals you can achieve on your trip, find something good.
How can it be an investment?
It doesn't have to be a cash investment, but you just have to find what your travels will benefit you in, for example: maybe you want to go to Switzerland for an epic physical century interval so you can sell that as stock footage or every location you want to shoot in a particular location to create An epic video only, it doesn't have to be movie related, there are endless opportunities.
How you can make your travel investment?
it just requires some creativity so for me a few years ago I got an internship opportunity in Switzerland where I made educational videos for a human rights group each weekend I would have free time to visit new countries so I would have to think to myself how would traveling to this destination be an investment for me.
for example: maybe if I go to York or Spain I can get an epic shot of me jumping off the sea arch that would make a cool Blog or Vlog if I go to this place in Greece I'll be able to get some awesome footage of one of the world's craziest beaches and get some other viral content there if I can't find a good reason to go on a trip.
besides having fun I have a hard time justifying spending the money in time so I guess my point is we all want to have a fun time while we travel so if we can also have another reason to go it can make your travels investment in home hopefully make you some money while you're at alright so another way traveling can be an investment is you can use your travels and experiences.
Build Your Portfolio
can help you get jobs and other opportunities while back I was a role to my classes at college but I decided to take a leave of absence for that semester and my brother and I decided to go on a two-week content trip to Europe I bottomed out my bank account buying new camera gear and covering all my travel expenses we went to Ibiza for Halloween.
we explored Reese's famous cities of Athens and then we headed over to Meteora we roamed the streets of London and we finished the trip with two days in Iceland I mean we got some of the most incredible footage and it was one of the most memorable trips of my life.
after those two weeks were over I came back broke and I was honestly a little discouraged but I was able to use that footage to make my two years blog and a few months later I use that blog to help me get an internship at the iconic beautiful destinations you don't know if beautiful destinations.
the most famous travel brands so for me it was like a dream job anyways I got the internship and worked with them in New York City all summer long blogging about them it was just an awesome opportunity so if you look at traveling from that aspect heavy trip might not make you money but you're building your portfolio and also improving your skills which can help you land your dream job.
Educational Investment
some of my greatest life lessons weren't learned in a college lecture hall rather they were discovered when I was traveling in a foreign country being present and learning.
from my surroundings, he discovered a lot about who are and what we value in life and it helps you evaluate where you want to be in the upcoming years traveling has given me my greatest memories it's where I've truly felt alive.
new things that make you feel the same excitement you felt as a child because everything is it's new it's not the same old grind when you're living back at home I remember the first time I saw the northern lights I was sleeping on this cliff edge in Norway's arctic circle.
it was just a just your-fork surreal experience it was a memory I'll cherish forever and an experience I would have never gotten if I decided to never leave my country.
so one important life lesson that I realized is that I've never regretted the money that I spent on traveling the only thing I've regretted is wasting time and not traveling more we can always make more money but our time is limited and some opportunities will only come once.

Jan 22 𓇢𓆸 Los Angeles, Kona, Hilo
I forced myself out of bed and zipped up my luggage. I gave Dre a quick goodbye as I called my Uber to the airport. My Uber driver was chatty, and he made me laugh the whole drive over. I considered that a good omen.
I slept intermittently on my flight. I watched half of a movie about two men throwing a house party. Every flight announcement ended with mahalo—thank you—and I wondered if that was a choice or a contractual obligation.
“Flight attendants please prepare for our final descent into Kona. Mahalo.”
I watched from the window as we drew closer to ribbons of blue water, small boats in the sea, the black rock of the shoreline. What the hell was I doing here.
I missed the first bus to Hilo. The next one wasn’t for two more hours. I ate a chicken sandwich and ice cream bar and waited. When I finally exited the airport, I caught a blissful whiff of gardenia on the breeze. I paused. The idea that Hawaii is in any way similar to its mythology shocked me.
I got on my bus with a few other young tourists and airport workers. We rolled slowly on a highway decorated with volcanic rock. The bus pulled into a Four Seasons nearby to pick up a few more locals getting off their shifts. In the fading light, I watched retirees walking along the golf course. I saw a honeymooning couple offroading their golf cart while holding glasses of champagne.
The sun set and we continued our journey across the island in pitch black. The bus dropped me off at a gas station, where I bought a pack of bubblegum and called an Uber for the remaining few miles.
When I walked into the house, everyone was already seated at a large banquet table eating dinner. There were over twenty people there in total. Some of them walked up to introduce themselves as I made myself a plate of stew, salad, cheese, and crackers. I sat next to an awkward man named Liam and tried to make conversation. Someone passed around sake and sliced star fruit.
I left with the small cadre I’ll be sharing a house with in Hamakua. On the long dark drive up the coast, each person shared why they were here to study with Rosemary. Jo, who was driving the rental, explained that she works in the music industry in Switzerland. She’d learned about Rosemary while attending a workshop in Italy. Fabia, the Italian woman beside me in the backseat, knew of the workshop. The last woman in the car was Mihiro, a greying music teacher from Tokyo. She was the one who'd brought the sake.
When we arrived, I was again caught off guard by the unbelievable smell. I couldn’t see the jungle around me but I could smell it—the soil, the flowers, the leaves, the sea. And something else—the chatter of the most musical birds I’ve ever heard.

13 + sebson? (if you’re feeling it ☺️)
It's finally done!!! Sorry for taking forever, I really hope you enjoy it! 💚
sebson + "I don't feel so good" - send me a prompt!
“I don’t feel so good…” Just hearing Jenson say that painfully short sentence was enough for Sebastian to spring into action and (gently) load his idiot of a husband into the car. But seeing his face contorted in pain with his left hand clutched against his temple, the morning sunlight glinting off his gold wedding band, was the reason why Sebastian’s knuckles were white as he gripped the steering wheel of their rental car.
They had been out on their mountain bikes yesterday on a forest trail that had stunning views of Loch Ness. Jenson hadn’t been looking where he was going and hit a stone, came off the bike, and hit his head when he landed on the ground. He’d said he was fine and that Seb didn’t need to make a fuss – not when they were on holiday.
“You can say it if it would make you feel better.” Jenson said meekly from the front passenger seat.
“You should have let me take you to the hospital yesterday!” Seb forced through gritted teeth. According to the last signpost they were still 10 miles away from Inverness. “But it doesn’t make me feel better.” He said with a long sigh, and finally reduced his grip on the steering wheel.
They’d properly pushed the boat out, what with the week away being for their first wedding anniversary. They booked a cabin on the Caledonian sleeper train up from London, and were staying at a luxury cabin in a campsite surrounded by fir trees with a small on-site farm shop to save them having to travel into Inverness for anything and everything.
Like what Sebastian was doing now.
With it being early September, the deciduous trees that were scattered around the hospital grounds still had all their leaves and had barely started to change colour. Not that Seb cared as he walked with his arm locked around Jenson’s waist into A&E.
It must have been their lucky day, as half an hour after Sebastian rapidly reeled off Jenson’s symptoms to the receptionist on duty a nurse directed them to an examination room.
“I had my helmet on, I’m probably just concussed Seb, will you…” Jenson had sat himself on the end of the bed and had stayed put ever since they’d been told someone would be along shortly. “…please stop pacing and just hold my hand?”
It was the crack in Jenson’s voice that caused Seb to finally stop moving at a hundred miles an hour and look at the man he loved. Jenson’s sandy blond hair was sticking up at odd angles since he had barely been out of bed for ten minutes before he said he felt unwell, and in his rush to get dressed he’d flung on his favourite cable knit forest green cardigan inside out. But it was the slightly wounded look in his steel blue eyes that pulled Sebastian out of his downward spiral and over to Jenson. Seb kissed his husband’s temple and hugged Jenson around the shoulders before burying his nose deep in his hair. Seb could still smell the traces of the apple shampoo Jenson had used when he’d showered the night before.
“I love you so much.” Seb said only loud enough for Jenson to hear.
“I love you too.” Jenson’s voice was muffled from his face being pressed against Seb’s flannel shirt, but the warmth was there, as it always was.
Ironically, Jenson falling off his bike was also how they’d met. They had been on separate holidays in Switzerland, Jenson to see the world and Sebastian to try and heal a broken heart. At least then Jenson hadn’t been completely thrown from his bike and more slowly fell off thanks to a puncture. Seb had unknowingly been a kilometre or so behind him and he’d stopped to offer help. They’d ended up having dinner that night and Sebastian had been in love with Jenson ever since.
A nurse arrived ten minutes later and shined a light into Jenson’s eyes while asking him a plethora of questions. His full name, which the reply included a small joke about how Jenson had enough middle names for three people (they’d taken each other’s last name as an additional middle name after they got married since no iteration of double barrelling their surnames worked). What they’d done yesterday before and after Jenson hit his head (lunch at Fort Augustus before, next to the canal locks, and after they’d had a quiet night in which mainly involved Sebastian fretting constantly).
“We got married in Heppenheim, that’s my husband’s hometown in Germany. The trees changed colour a little earlier than what they normally do, it was so beautiful – all gold and orange everywhere.” Jenson explained with a wistful sigh after being asked when his and Seb’s wedding anniversary was. And when the nurse asked for their home address Jenson went into great detail about how he and Seb had settled on living in the Oxfordshire countryside to accommodate Jenson’s job as a tailor and Seb who worked at a green energy company.
“Jense has always been chatty.” Seb said with a wry smile. “He must be better than I thought.”
Jenson scoffed. “My husband could talk the hind legs of multiple donkeys if he wanted to.”
The nurse shook her head with a small smile, and said that while Jenson did have concussion she couldn’t see any major cause for concern. He was discharged with the recommendation that he was to come straight back if his symptoms got worse, and a metaphorical pat on the back for remembering to wear his helmet.
“I should probably buy you lunch for all the fuss I’ve caused.” Jenson said with a small sigh as he and Seb walked hand in hand through the hospital car park.
“Yes I think you should.” Seb gave Jenson’s hand a small squeeze, no that he’d calmed down he was finally starting to feel hungry. “Where should we go?”
Jenson stopped walking and took in a long breath of the cool morning air. There wasn’t much of a view besides the trees surrounding the hospital, but the sky was clear. It had the looks of becoming a beautiful day.
“I have absolutely no idea.” Jenson looked down at his and Seb’s intertwined hands and briefly smiled before frowning. “My cardigan’s inside out. Why didn’t you say something?”
“Ack.” Seb bit down on his bottom lip and glanced down at his boots while Jenson put his cardigan on the right way round. “I was too worried about your head.”
“Well, my head’s fine Seb. Or it will be.” Jenson leaned down to kiss Sebastian’s temple right as his stomach let out a loud grumble. “My digestive system on the other hand.”
Seb finally felt the remaining tension leave his shoulders as he let out a loud laugh and pulled his car keys out from his pocket.
“I’ll park somewhere in town and we can walk around, see if there’s anywhere we like the look of.”
“That sounds perfect.” Jenson said with a lazy grin. “I love you Sebastian Vettel.”
Seb waited until they were both sat in the car before reached out for Jenson’s hand which he squeezed as tightly as he could. All he could think about was the moment almost two months to the day after they’d first met, when Jenson had flown out to Frankfurt just to tell Seb that he was falling for him, and that he didn’t want to spent the rest of his life with anyone else.
“I love you too Jenson Button.”

1 Week in Costa Rica
Tumblr media
View along the drive from Monteverde to Manuel Antonio
Overview
We spent about a week exploring the rain forests, hot springs, and beaches of Costa Rica. I am conflicted about whether I would recommend visiting here and/or return myself.
On the one hand, it was really beautiful (the rain forests were a particularly unique experience for me), we had a relaxing time at the resorts we stayed at, and the direct flight from NYC was convenient and quick (~4.5 hours each way). On the other hand, public infrastructure was poor (e.g., poorly maintained roads with insufficient road signs and highly disorganized traffic; smells of sewage in the national park and even in our fanciest resort at times), the social contract felt less intact than even in the U.S. (we felt like we were being scammed half the time, even in dealings with globally known brands like Hertz and Uber Eats; drivers on the roads seemed both aggressive and incompetent), and everything was comparably expensive to developed countries we’ve visited – think NYC prices for developing world infrastructure.
Personally, next time I’d probably choose a developed country with better infrastructure and similarly beautiful scenery, like Hawaii, somewhere in Europe (Switzerland and Norway are favorites), or if specifically looking for rainforest, perhaps Australia, which has one of the largest rainforests in the world (I haven’t visited that rainforest myself, but found Australia delightful to visit when I was recently in Tasmania).

Sunset from the short hike at our hotel's reserve at Manuel Antonio
Here's our Costa Rica itinerary and some high-level commentary on it:
Direct flight from Newark to Liberia (small airport in the northwest part of Costa Rica)
Picked up a one-way car rental at Hertz – our pickup was relatively easy, but we later saw that Hertz in both Liberia and San Jose (where we dropped off the car) have awful reviews for being scammy.
Drive to Arenal (3 nights) – this was a very lazy few days, the main attractions were the Tabacon hot springs and views of Arenal Volcano.
Drive to Monteverde (2 nights) – highlights here were the resort (Senda Monteverde) and the zipline experience over the rainforest.
Drive to Manuel Antonio (2 nights) – the national park here was stunning and rife with wildlife spottings, but the surrounding area was a bit unpleasant (crowded, trafficky, lots of scammers). Seems like a must-visit place if you go to Costa Rica though.
Drive to San Jose (1 night) - We did not hear good things about San Jose and did not explore, we only went there because we were flying out of San Jose Airport back to NYC.

View of the Arenal Volcano from the Arenal National Park hike on a very rainy day
Arenal is an area known for the Arenal Volcano and the Tabacon Resort ($$$$) and its thermal hot springs. It was a ~2 hour drive from Liberia airport – the drive was okay, but not super special.
Tumblr media
View of the lake on our drive from Liberia to Arenal
The Tabacon Resort was nice, but underwhelming relative to anywhere else we stayed. I’m not big on hot springs, but I was pretty impressed with the resort’s hot springs, which were a bit of a maze of pools within a beautiful garden. Visitors can also pay ~$60pp to access the hot springs without staying at the resort. Personally I wouldn’t go out of my way for this, but if you love hot springs it could be worth a visit.

The activities in the area were nice, but also underwhelming compared to other parts of Costa Rica that we visited. We walked the trail in Arenal National Park (~$17pp). Yes, it was a single trail – we learned that national parks in Costa Rica are compact and expensive relative to national parks in the U.S. It poured almost the entire time we walked, making it a relatively unpleasant experience, and the scenery was very nice but also basically the same as what we saw in the other national parks we visited. The view of Arenal Volcano was fine – not Mount Rainier level amazing though.

The vegetarian food at the hotel was limited and not amazing. We enjoyed the options at Organico Fortuna in the nearby town of La Fortuna (~20 min drive from our resort).
Though our experience was good, I probably wouldn’t return to Arenal vs. other parts of Costa Rica / the world.

Monteverde Cloud Reserve hike
We had a great time in Monteverde. It was a ~3 hour drive from Arenal on some very potholed roads (honestly a neck pillow for the drive wouldn’t be a bad thing), but the scenery on the drive was very beautiful.

On the trail at the Aguti Reserve near our hotel in Monteverde
The area is known for the Monteverde Cloud Reserve ($25pp entry for a ~2 hour walk in the rainforest). We enjoyed the walk – it wasn’t super different from walking in Arenal National Park, but it was nice that it didn’t rain.

We also had a very nice zipline experience (~$65pp for a ~3 hour experience traversing 13 ziplines). The ziplines took us over the rain forest, which was a very cool vantage point, and the zipline guides were extremely professional and very friendly. I would definitely recommend this.

The zipline experience also included an optional "Tarzan Swing"...
We stayed at the lovely Senda Monteverde ($$$), a luxury resort with rooms with an elevated treehouse vibe. The resort offered free admission to the nearby Aguti Reserve, with lots of trails to walk through rainforest flora. They also had many nice touches such as a free minibar in the room, free activities such as yoga, medicinal tea, and cocktail making, and leaving us heated water bottles before bedtime when it got a little chilly. We had a great experience here.

The resort grounds were so lush and beautifully designed
Monteverde was the chilliest place we stayed – I was glad I brought a few full sleeve shirts and a fleece jacket – and it rained on and off during our visit. It was also the least crowded area we visited, which was a treat.

On the water at Manuel Antonio
Manuel Antonio National Park was stunning (entrance is ~$17pp for 3+ hours of hikes in the rainforest and access to beautiful sandy beaches). It encompasses both rainforest and some of the bay leading into the Pacific Ocean. We saw the most wildlife at Manuel Antonio vs. any other area. We didn’t have time to enjoy the beaches, but they looked lovely.

We so so many monkeys on the Manuel Antonio National Park hike!
However, the park is a bit overrun, understandably given its exquisiteness. It was mandatory to buy entrance tickets online in advance (we tried to do this the morning of and all that was left was an 11am entry time, but our hotel concierge told us we could still enter earlier, which worked out fine for us). The park entrance was overrun with aggressive, scammy men posing as official park tour guides (they were not) and trying to fraudulently sell parking spots. We were lucky that our hotel offered a free shuttle to and from the park so we didn’t have to deal with the hassle of parking here (we also saw there was a public bus, which seemed like a good option).

Another trail at Manuel Antonio National Park led to this beautiful viewpoint -- some parts of the park reminded us of the Road to Hana in Maui
We also really enjoyed doing a half-day catamaran excursion (~$80pp, booked through Viator and also available to book through the hotel) with views of the national park from the water. The water was too murky to see anything when we tried snorkeling, but the views throughout were gorgeous.

We stayed at Gaia Hotel ($$), a resort with rooms that weren’t as luxurious as our other stays, but with the best, most personalized and attentive service we experienced anywhere on our trip. The resort also had a reserve on the property and free guided walking tours of it – we got to see macaws and a beautiful sunset over the water.

Manuel Antonio was the hottest place we stayed – definitely weather for shorts/t-shirt or light hiking pants/light UPF protective shirt + mosquito repellent. The vegetarian food at the hotel looked unappealing, but there were a few decent restaurants in town (we liked Namaste Indian, Varuna Plant-Based for salads and smoothie bowls, and the Thai restaurant), all in 2-3 block area. Driving in this area was somewhat unpleasant: the one road leading to and from the park was trafficky and full of aggressive and bad drivers, and it was hard to find parking near the restaurants in town.

San Jose
The ~4 hour drive from Manuel Antonio to San Jose was miserable. The paucity of road signs (i.e., giving drivers advance notice when a 2nd lane on the road was closing) and many disrespectful drivers created a lot of needless traffic and danger on the road.
Once we reached San Jose, we stayed at the Marriott Hacienda Belen on points, a 20-min drive from the airport. It turned out to be a very nice hotel (great fitness center, Christmas carols) though the vegetarian food options were minimal and we used Uber Eats instead (and got stomach sick off the vegan food we tried).
Nothing we saw of San Jose on our drive in, and then later to the airport, made me think it would be a nice place to spend more time.
Returning our car rental to the San Jose airport was a bit complicated since they didn’t give us an address, and we initially went to the wrong location (at the domestic terminal vs. an offsite location). If you use Hertz here – which I’m not sure can be recommended given how poor their Google reviews are – the San Jose airport dropoff location is called “Hertz Costa Rica Rio Segundo, Alajuela” and is opposite a Hampton Inn.
The San Jose international airport terminal was very crowded (on a Saturday mid-day) – security took about half an hour, and neither of the two Priority Pass lounges had any capacity to accept new guests. All of the food places in the terminal had horrible Google reviews (<3 stars).

Just another gratuitous picture of the sandy beaches at Manuel Antonio National Park, since we took 0 pictures of San Jose :)
Logistics
When to visit – We visited in the last week of November, right after Thanksgiving. The first half of the trip was pretty rainy. November is the end of rainy season in Costa Rica -- it’s probably worth trying to visit squarely in the non-rainy season (which starts in December) to be safe.
Driving in Costa Rica – We had a few people recommend we hire a driver to take us around. We personally prefer not to deal with drivers (especially after our poor/scammy experience in Kerala) and liked the flexibility of doing our own driving. The only leg that I thought was so unpleasant as to maybe make a driver useful was Manuel Antonio to San Jose. Luckily, S is a very good driver and we made it just fine.
Renting a car – We were glad to have a 4x4 car for the potholed and muddy roads. Maybe look at other agencies than Hertz given their poor reviews on Google. And FYI, Costa Rica requires purchasing liability insurance directly from the rental car company (we didn’t know this until we arrived and were informed by the Hertz agent).
Vegetarian food – The traditional breakfast of eggs, rice and beans, and plantains was proteinful and delicious, but other than that the vegetarian food at the resorts was generally pretty sad (lots of bland pastas and occasionally a veggie burger with not-crispy fries). Getting enough protein was difficult.
Health & Sanitation – The CDC states that it’s better to drink bottled water in Costa Rica. Some of our hotels told us the water there was potable, but we stuck with bottled water to be safe. The CDC also warns of mosquito-borne diseases, so we were careful to wear long pants and sleeves most of the time and (when it was unbearable) to wear plenty of bug spray.
Currency – The currency, the Costa Rican colon, was exchanging at approximately 530:1 USD when we visited. We never used cash – credit card worked fine everywhere, including at toll booths on the highway and at the national parks. The only place where cash might be needed is perhaps if you take a public bus, like to/from Manuel Antonio National Park (I don’t know for sure how payment for public transit works in Costa Rica).
