We are saddened by the news that actor Andre Braugher has passed away, aged 61, after a brief illness. But we are glad to celebrate the life and work of this deep-voiced, deadpan legend with a wealth of wonderful tributes from across the dashboard—as Tumblr pays tribute to this biggest, warmest of hearts the only way it knows how. Oh Captain, Our Captain.
I knew him strictly through Brooklyn 99. His deadpan delivery was always perfect, and he knew exactly when to drop it for a better joke. The best example is for the "What happened to Amy" cold open when everyone guesses what happened to Amy to cause her to be late for work. Braugher's character guessed that the line was long at the bank, and when Amy said it was exactly that, Braugher, in a moment of improvisation, went "HOT DAMN!" It was so out of nowhere and perfect that the cast and crew immediately broke into laughter the second he said it. I don't know his other stuff, but moments like that proves why he's perfect in comedy.
Hearing Andre Braugher passing away hurts. He was only 61, and the joy he brought to not just me but to the world for his portrayal as Captain Holt in B99 was and is amazing. He made me laugh when I needed it the most, and I still screamed "VINDICATION!" like him anytime I'm right. Rest in Power!
Captain Holt was the first time I ever saw a powerful queer person on my TV whose queerness mattered without it being their only defining quality. Powerful, smart, funny, queer, a lil autistic. He was the ultimate comfort character.
