Monster Den - Chapter 1
It was autumn. The air was crisp and cold, and if it had been any sort or form food or beverage, it would have even been described as "delicious".
While most around his age would be out and about playing Preystone or Hide and Seek, Shadowpaw much preferred to spend his time in his home, inside of his room.
He just simply found it to be exceedingly difficult to properly interact with others, both because of his epilepsy - which he did have to take medication for - and because of his mild social anxiety.
Shadowpaw mainly remained in his room most days, his mother often coming near dusk to give him his supper. Shadowpaw's mother, Dovewing, had always been the softer of his parents, more in tune with her emotions and Shadowpaw's.
His father, however, was a different story entirely. Tigerstar was more blunt and distant, seeming far off in his thoughts. Whenever Shadowpaw tried to speak to him, Tigerstar would only respond with a gruff, "That's good, son."
And his sisters? Oh, they out of the picture entirely! Lightleap was almost always over at her girlfriend Lakeheart's house, and Pouncestep was always playing Preystone with the toms. Even when they were over, they would hardly ever speak to him. Whether it was from the barrier they had inadvertently created or from the uncomfortableness of interacting with their seizure-ridden brother, Shadowpaw was never sure.
Now while most toms his age would have been interested in she-cat's - or toms- Shadowpaw had never been interested in either parties. He had never  "swung" one way or the other, and he was just fine with it staying that way. Anything pertaining to romance or sex with anyone in any way had always made Shadowpaw uncomfortable.
Since Shadowpaw was never interested in either sexes, he'd taken to other hobbies, such as art or drawing. But recently he'd taken up a more... Odd hobby. That hobby involved spying on Longtail, the old, decrepit, blind tom who across the street from Shadowpaw. Longtail had once being married to a she-cat named Mousefur, who had disappeared long before Shadowpaw was even existed.
There were rumors of Longtail having eaten her up, only marrying her to fatten her up for a delicious meal. Of course, there was hardly any weight to these claims. And Shadowpaw didn't care much for the town gossip. However, there was nothing saying Longtail hadn-
"Shadowpaaaawwwwww!!" Shadowpaw looked up from his desk upon hearing his mother's voice. He had been doodling on a crumpled piece of paper, but it would have to wait. Sighing softly, Shadowpaw stood up from the chair he had been sitting on, the yoga pants he wore creating a shuffling sound as he walked.
Shadowpaw had been born naturally chubby, like his mother, while Lightleap was as skinny and slim as Aunt Ivypool, and Pouncestep had inherited Tigerstar's muscle and more masculine looks. Shadowpaw had never been comfortable with his chubbiness, no matter how much Dovewing had attempted to console him about it, and so she had gone on a shopping spree to buy him clothing that would, for the most part, conceal his body. And while most were sweaters and yoga pants, Shadowpaw was just fine with that.
At least no one could see and tease him about his body anymore...
"SHADOWPAAAWWWWWW!!!!" His mother, again, called, sounding more annoyed. Shadowpaw huffed. "Coming!" He shouted back, exiting his room before heading downstairs. He opened the door, and was quickly assaulted by his mother with kisses and a hug.
Both his parents would be heading out of town for the weekend for a short vacation, since they had been arguing more and more lately. Shadowpaw wouldn't be surprised if they got a divorce, even with the vacation to try to patch things up between them. He would have a babysitter: Needletail. He had never met her, but considering part of her name was 'Needle-', he guessed she would not be of a pleasant character.
After another warm kiss from his mother and a cold goodbye from his father, they both got inside of the car and drove away. Shadowpaw gave them a half-hearted wave goodbye, before immediately plopping himself down on the welcome mat, beginning to cry.
Shadowpaw, despite everything, loved both of his parents greatly. The thought of them ever separating, the memory of their fights - there was only so much a 13 year old could take. And Shadowpaw was reaching his limit.
"Hey! Loo- LOOK OUT!!" A sudden shriek, shrill and definitely much younger sounding than his own, cut through the sounds of his sobbing and sniffling. Letting out a soft hiccup, Shadowpaw looked up, his cheeks tear-streaked. The young tom had looked up just in time to see a basketball flying straight towards his face.
