Forbidden Beat: Perspectives on Punk Drumming (edited by S.W. Lauden/Genuine Rare Bird Books/218 pages)

Now this is a great idea for a book. S.W. Lauden (aka Steve Coulter) drummed for Tsar and currently drums for The Brothers Steve (both terrific combos) so he knows a thing or two about the skins. In his excellent new book he asked many of his drum heroes several questions about drums in general. Sure, there’s interview with big names like Jon Wurster (Superchunk), Tre Cool (Green Day), Lori Barbero (Babes in Toyland) and many others, but there’s also essays, photos and the like. For instance Jim Ruland writes about The Descendents’ Bill Stevenson and an essay by Girl Trouble’s Bon Von Wheelie on her introduction to drumming (which was not her first instrument). There’s also lists (anyone who knows me knows I love lists!). Bad Religion’s Pete Finestone lists his 5 favorite punk drummers as does Flipside magazine’s Hudley. There’s also a whole lot of folks interviewed in here who I’d never heard of so I’ve had a chance to learn stuff on a few different levels. The foreword is by Circle Jerks’ legend Lucky Lehrer and the cover art, which is awesome by the way, is by the great Brian Walsby.
