NOIR CITY: Boston returns to its home at the Brattle Theatre, June 9-11 with eleven films celebrating their 75th anniversaries. FNF board member, film professor, and author Foster Hirsch will introduce the festival screenings. NOIR CITY opens with a double feature of Robert Siodmak's "Cry of the City", co-starring Victor Mature and Richard Conte, and Jules Dassin's "The Naked City", shot on location in New York City, starring Barry Fitzgerald. Five films will run on Saturday and four films will play on Sunday.
Saturday's lineup starts with "He Walked by Night", an influential police procedural, directed by Alfred L. Werker and an uncredited Anthony Mann, photographed by perhaps the greatest film noir cinematographer, John Alton, and starring Richard Basehart. "Hollow Triumph" follows, directed by Steve Sekely, starring Joan Bennett and Paul Henreid. Rounding out the afternoon films is "The Spiritualist", lensed by John Alton, featuring Turhan Bey, Lynn Bari, and Cathy O'Donnell. The evening films kick off with John Farrow's "The Big Clock," starring Ray Milland, Charles Laughton, and George Macready. Henry Hathaway's newspaper noir "Call Northside 777", the first film shot entirely on location in Chicago, follows with noteworthy performances by Jimmy Stewart and Richard Conte.
Sunday begins with a screening of Douglas Sirk's "Sleep, My Love" starring Claudette Colbert and featuring Don Ameche playing against type as a murderous husband. The second film of the day — Preston Sturges' black comedy "Unfaithfully Yours" also features an actor playing against type, Rex Harrison, as a murderous husband. The final evening of the festival begins with Anatole Litvak's adaption of Lucille Fletcher's renowned radio play, "Sorry, Wrong Number", starring Barbara Stanwyck and Burt Lancaster. The festival of 1948 films finishes with a screening of George Sherman's "Larceny" featuring the incredible lineup of John Payne, Dan Duryea, Shelley Winters, and Joan Caulfield.
BRATTLE BONUS: On Monday, June 12, The Brattle has programmed a bonus screening of Anthony Mann's "Raw Deal#. The 1948 film stars Dennis O'Keefe, Marsha Hunt, and Claire Trevor. This screening will not be hosted.Individual tickets, ticket packages, and film schedule are available on The Brattle's website: https://bit.ly/43SPL4O

MADE IN MASSACHUSETTS Coming to The Brattle on Sunday
The Brattle Theatre in Harvard Square (Cambridge, MA) is one of my favorite movie theaters on the planet! In the 5th row there is actually a Cruising In The Van Productions seat that my producer and I bought during their pledge drive in 2006. Now they are doing one of the coolest things, a big free event on Sunday January 13, 2024, Made in Massachusetts: 100 Years of Filmmaking the Bay State.
Here's the press release:
A one-time-only public screening of an epic 3+ hour chronological compilation of scenes from over 200 films and television shows shot in Massachusetts between 1922 and 2022. Highlighting recognizable locales from Martha’s Vineyard to Harvard Square to Great Barrington, along with bygone landmarks and Boston streets, and featuring James Cagney, Tony Curtis, Elizabeth Taylor, Luciano Pavarotti, Harrison Ford, and all the Afflecks and Wahlbergs you can handle. Compiled and edited by Adam Roffman and Vatche Arabian, who will be in attendance.
Both Adam and Vatche are friends of mine and I'm sure they did an awesome job of curating. I hope some of the big films I've worked on like Monument Ave made the cut!
This is a free event with donations encouraged. For info: https://brattlefilm.org/special_events/made-in-massachusetts/

BEST MOVIE-GOING EVENT OF 2022
The best movie-going event of the year is a little different than the Best Movie of the Year. This year there were a few memorable times at the movie theater: going back to the movie theater for the first time in months and seeing 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home at a time when I needed the lift that movies give me; attending the in-person Independent Film Festival Boston; bringing my son to see Lightyear, Minions: The Rise of Gru, and Puss In Boots: The Last Wish; or seeing Moonage Daydream at Coolidge Corner Theatre. But my Best Movie-Going Event of 2022:
1. Band of Outsiders (10/12/22 at the Brattle Theatre, Cambridge)
On our wedding anniversary, my wife and I had dinner in Harvard Square. We got out early enough that we went next door to the Brattle just as they were about to screen a 35mm print of Band of Outsiders as part of their tribute to Jean-Luc Godard. This has always been one of my favorite Godard films and it was my first time seeing it on the big screen. When my wife and I first met we bonded over French cinema and particularly Godard, this being one of our shared favorites and now we got to see it together on our 14th anniversary!
