Getting ready for the Booklr Reads Australian challenge. These are a selection of Aussie books I own (fiction on the left, nonfic on the right) which I'll be choosing from during the month. I'm a mood reader so I have no idea what I'll actually end up picking but I'd like to get through at least a few of these.
List of titles and brief descriptions of each is below the cut for anyone looking for ideas for their own Australian reads.
The open book is The Tea Chest by Josephine Moon (my current read.) It's a rather sweet novel revolving around four women who's lives in Australia have been disrupted and who come together to open a tea shop in London.
A true History of the Hula Hoop by Judith Lanigan The book weaves together two parallel stories, one of Catherine, a struggling Aussie hula-hooping performance artist, and the other of Columbina, a feisty 16th century Italian female clown travelling through Europe with the first ever commedia dell'arte troupe, while also weaving in the history of the hula hoop.
Without Further Ado by Jessica Dettmann A romcom inspired by/paying homage to Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, in which the protagonist loves the Kenneth Branagh adaptation and finds her love life mirroring the plot.
Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match by Sally Thorne A romance inspired by Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, in which Victor Frankenstein's sister Angelika is anxious for love and decides to take matters into her own hands and create a suitable suitor.
Empires by Nick Earls This novel spans continents and centuries. It's split up into 5 parts, each occurring in a different time and place, but which all intertwine and connect. It's about two brother from Brisbane who've lead separate lives, but its also about humans in strange and difficult times, the way people see themselves, and the interconnectedness of all things.
The Tea Ladies by Amanda Hampson A cosy mystery set in 1965 Sydney. It follows a group of tea ladies who work in a fashion house getting tea and biscuits for the staff. Until a murder occurs in the building and the tea ladies become accidental sleuths.
Top End Girl by Miranda Tapsell Larrakia Tiwi actress Miranda Tapsell's memoir about her work and life as an Aboriginal woman and how she combined both when creating the film Top End Wedding.
Girt by David Hunt A humorous look at Australian history, from megafauna to Macquarie. Full of strange, ridiculous and bizarre stories.
Harlem Nights: The Secret History of Australia's Jazz Age by Deirdre O'Connell This is the story of the Sydney and Melbourne legs of American jazz band The Colored Idea's ill fated Australian tour in 1928. It's about the international rise of African American jazz, the history of Australia's entertainment industry and modernism in the arts in Australia, and the influence of the White Australia Policy beyond immigration issues.
Flash Jim: The Astonishing Story of the Convict Fraudster Who Wrote Australia's First Dictionary by Kel Richards This is a biography of conman, pickpocket and thief James Hardy Vaux who was sent to Australia as a convict. Not only does it go into explanations of his numerous crimes but also the origins of Australian English as Vaux also created a dictionary of the criminal slang of the colony, some of which can still be seen in modern Australian language.
Great Australian Mysteries by John Pinkney A collection of Australian true crime mysteries including inexplicable disappearances, unsolved murders and scientific enigmas.
Notorious Australian Women by Kay Saunders This book celebrates the lives of some of Australia's most fearless, brash, and scandalous women, including bushrangers, courtesans, and writers, amongst others.

Day 1 - Japan Blog - 7 February 2024
Day One: Adelaide to Tokyo Virgin Airlines via Melbourne and Cairns
Let's begin our departure to Japan. My sixth time visiting Nippon, and this time I hope to see and experience new things I havent been able to before.
My previous trips have been more to the cities to shop and to Disneyland but as I become more infatuated with this country, I am drawn to more meaningful experiences. It used to be about the video games, the collectables, the cute accessories and conveniences I couldnt get at home -- but now I am intrigued with the history, culture and nature of Japan. Hopefully I can manage to do everything I want to do and all the things, I wasnt expecting. (Because, theyre always the best!)
Leaving our house at 4am this morning was always a challenge; especially when I finished packing at 2am. So, we jumped in the uber which was driven by a super eccentric female driver who made me want to drop everying and start uber driving -- how is this even a thing I would want to do? She was so funny and chirpy and smart. It made the ride memorable and we made it to the airport with the rest of our holiday to look forward to.
Second up, checking in at Virgin Airlines in Adelaide Airport was also a huge highlight. The person helped us with our check in -- not that we needed it, but she upgraded our domestic flights to extra legroom which made my travel partner very happy.
I'm travelling with my partner of 4 years; Ben. He is 6"3 and loves an extra legroom seat! You'll probably learn a lot about him through my posts. He likes good food and music!
Well, after discovering that our VA fare is NOT a full service fare (I am NOT happy about this, shook, stricken, SLANDER!) as I would NEVER... but apparently; flying trans-tasman with VA doesn't mean you get a meal or a blanket or a pillow or a nice piece of metal. We are on a Boeing 737-800 Max for 9 hours with NO SNACKS. I think, because I booked this hastily, on their website (opposed to through a GDS with the option to see ancillaries) without the complete details -- I assumed it was a short haul international flight, and compared it with Qantas' service. I was wrong. The inflight entertainment is BYO device (which I didnt...) and the 737800 isnt fitted with Wifi onboard so I couldnt even download anything to watch. Their WiFi was working, so you could use their Free Entertainment, however I found it lagged and I couldn't even watch it through the buffering. So I just stuck to my knitting -- without music though because my Spotify decided I didnt need my downloaded music either.
It was a very long and semi-uncomfortable flight.
After the gruelling hours of trying to sleep, trying to finish my knitting and also doing some work... we landed in Haneda! HOORAY! Now time to do customs, and head to our hotel. Almost there.
For those playing at home; here is a quick breakdown of how to enter Japan.
-Grab an entry card and declaration card from your air host/ess. They will provide the physical card for you to fill in to give when you go through customs.
  or
-Alternatively; visit Japanweb.gov.jp (I dont have a photo of it, because you cant use cameras in customs, and I used the physical card option -- I love filling out these things!!) and you can do it all online and scan your QR at the gate.
The entry card tells the Japanese Government what your intentions on visiting Japan. IE: Tourism, visiting a relative, Business, etc -- and how long you intend to stay, where you're going to be staying -- all that jazz.
The declarations card is about what you are BRINGING in to JAPAN. So please dont bring things like fruit, meat, dangerous goods, illegal substances (this can be some medications like Codeine and Pseudoephedrine so please check with your doctor -- and get a note if you take medication regularly that might not be "legal" in Japan). If you dont bring any of this with you; you dont need to declare anything and you can walk straight through once you've shown your passport.
-Line up and have your passport at the ready. Keep your entry cards with your passport.
-They will scan your finger prints and take your photo first. (We had to do this twice...)
-Line up again to go through the gates.
-This is where they will stamp your passport and grant your access.
Once youve gone through this part; you're almost there!!
-Pick up your bags.
-Find the carosel with the flight you just arrived on. (IE: VA77 is on carosel 6) Your bags will come out here.
-Collect your bags and take them to the gates on the other side.
-Show your passport and declaration card and you *should* be good to enter.
Here we go! We are in JAPAN -- the first port of call is to get our mascot for the trip. This is something Ive done since my 2018 trip and it's fun and cute and it makes me happy to share my experience through a silly icon's eyes. Walk towards the "Keihan" Train Line which will get you to Tokyo. This is a trainline that goes direct from Haneda airport to Tokyo and connects to any of the main train networks in Tokyo. It really doesn't matter what neighbourhood you are staying in; 90% of the time this will be the train you need to get you to where you want to go. On the LEFT there is a 7/11 (get money from the ATM in the left corner, and then grab some snacks and a drink so you've got some coins..) because on the RIGHT there are a bunch of Gacha Machines where I like to find my mascot.
This time; NOTHING. No lil dudes. So, we will keep looking.
Take the Escalators down to the train platform and board the train to TOKYO/SHINAGAWA and you're on your way.
Back to my blog; Ben and I had our heart set on this ramen place we found by accident last time we were in Akihabara. We call it "Midnight Ramen" because he wanted ramen at midnight and it came through with the GOODS... alas. We dropped our bags at our hotel in Shinagawa and did a quick change into something warm. (It was 36degrees when we left Adelaide and now we are facing 2degrees and SNOW!) Slammed on a beanie and caught the Yamanote to Akiba; to find that our ramen place was closed for renovations. The SADDEST TIME! Akiba isn't known for its ramen so we had to find something else... how devastating.
We found a Hakata style ramen place. It was a 6/10. It got a point for being open. Also, it was okay. The Nori (seaweed) had cute printed sayings on it which I thought was cute (gross, but cute). Then I found out that another branch of the other ramen place was open in Shinagawa, only a 6 minute walk from our hotel. Let's pretend like that didnt happen.
After we ate, we became acquainted with our new local Kombini (7/11, convenience store) attached to our hotel, and purchased some necessities.

Spring Carnival - Top Hair Styling Tips
Spring Carnival Hair
Whether going to the Melbourne Spring Carnival or attending a springtime party, you want to look your best. We’ve gathered the best ideas from our own experience and around the web to help take the fuss when looking your best on race day.
Fascinators & Hats
Selecting the right Fascinator or Hat is super important to your fashion statement on the day. Remember to embrace what feels right and let your hair shine through! When attaching to your hair, keep any clips towards the back of your head behind your ears. This will help keep them out of photos on the day. To ensure your hair forms the foundation of your fashion statement, we recommend a smoothing gloss. This helps keep hair frizz at bay and hair looking shiny and smooth. Our experts use Light Elements™ smoothing fluid. Loaded with hydrating ingredients it keeps hair feeling soft and shiny throughout the day and your Spring Carnival hair bound for a winning result!
Up styles & ponytails
A simple and textured ponytail is a classic way to jazz up your hairstyle. This simple style can accentuate your earrings or dress style and is versatile for almost any setting. When next in the salon, we can quickly show you how to recreate this style at home with a blow dryer, some style prep and simple backcombing techniques (sounds hard but is quite simple)
In salon consultation
Asking your hairstylist for hair styling tips that suit your hair length and type will help you craft your very own Spring Carnival hairstyle! If you’re like us and prefer to trust the professionals then we recommend booking a salon appointment. We’re open every race day (except Melbourne Cup) and we may see you there)
For Melbourne Cup bookings and all details please call 03 9510 7447, book online (click here) or message (here)~ Rare Earth Hair – Better for your hair, body and world you live inSource Link: https://www.rareearthhair.com.au/spring-carnival/top-spring-carnival-hair-styling-tips/

Sea Princesses English Voice Actors - Where are they now?
Tumblr media
(pictured: Voice actors following the recording of the first episode of Sea Princesses, Lost. Back (left to right): Olivia Pigeot, Mary-Ann Henshaw, Isabella Dunwill. Front (left to right): Alex Cook, Di Adams, Paige Walker, Jacqui Lofgren, Katherine Cohn.)
You can manipulate the world and use AI that's as close to real life all you want, you'll never get all the original actors and voice actors of your favourite shows back to reprise their roles on something as large of a scale as Kisekae Insights.
The voice actors who worked on Sea Princesses are rather unknown outside of Australia and some of them have moved on to different roles, both in and out of the industry. Sure, I can say that everyone came back to reprise their characters in my personal project, but where are they now in real life? Let's take a look at where the voice actors of Sea Princesses are now, nearly 20 years after the first book was released in Brazil.
For brevity, I won't be covering any credited voice actors who are still predominately acting in Australia. Bolded roles are confirmed while italicised roles are speculated through observation and/or deduction.
Isabella Dunwill – Polvina
Tumblr media
Known for her role as Geri Hallett in the soap opera Neighbours, Isabella Dunwill would voice Amy in the 2011 3D revival of Bananas in Pyjamas. In 2016, she would become the manager of the Melbourne campus of her alma mater, the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). Most recently in 2020, she participated in Miss Chess' Christmas song, Happy Jolly Very Extra Merry Christmas, released following the second lockdown in Melbourne.
Katherine Beck – Ester
Tumblr media
Credited as Katherine Cohn and not to be mistaken for Australian actress Kathryn Beck (a mistake I made way too many times in the early days of my personal project), Ester was Katherine Beck's first voice role in Australia. She would continue to be featured as a voice actress in other Australian cartoons and advertisements over the coming years. Katherine Beck currently works as an American accent voice coach and also hosts two podcasts, namely The All American Actor's Podcast and The Voice of Your Brand.
Paige Walker – Tubarina
Tumblr media
Like Katherine Beck, Paige Walker currently works as an American accent voice coach, though she has performed as an aerialist in various circuses. Tubarina was Paige Walker's only voice role. She has recently appeared as a guest on the Two Unemployed Actors podcast with host Max Belmonte.
Matthew Whittet – Hugo
Tumblr media
Although Matthew Whittet continues to be featured as an actor in Australian productions, he has worked extensively in theare and has also written some productions of his own as well, including Girl Asleep and two episodes of the 2022 Netflix reboot of the Australian soap opera Heartbreak High. He also voiced Charlie the Monkey in the 2011 3D revival of Bananas in Pyjamas.
Shannon Murphy – Tata
Tumblr media
As cited in her interview with Matthew Eles of Cinema Australia, Tata was Shannon Murphy's only voice role that she took up while studying to be a director at NIDA; a friend asked her if she wanted to be on Sea Princesses since she still had a bit of an American accent after coming back from the US. Shannon Murphy predominately works as a director on various Australian productions.
(there was also the yogurt incident of 2020 with her then-husband, Dan Wyllie who voiced Marcello, which he was found not guilty of and Murphy was found to not be "an impressive witness". Aussie Amber Heard much?)
Jacqui Lofgren – Leia, Delfi, Lia
Tumblr media
Jacqui Lofgren has had no other acting or voice roles before or after Sea Princesses. Having practiced in physie (an Australian dance style combining ballet, aerobics, gymnastics, contemporary and modern jazz) since the age of 4, Jacqui Lofgren currently teaches at North Sydney Physie & Dance. In 2015, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education (Primary) from Macquarie University.
Meaghan Davies – Elektra, Angelica (S1)
Tumblr media
While she may not necessarily be a "star talent" as Liamasterink described her, Meaghan Davies has been in productions between Australia and the US. She has voiced Megan in Tracey McBean, Tomasina in Bananas in Pyjamas and most recently, Annabelle in the Nickelodeon/Netflix series Sharkdog alongside Dee Bradley Baker and Kari Wahlgren.
Hannah Schofield – Juli, Jessi (S1)
Tumblr media
Aside her previous role in an episode of the 2002 series Don't Blame the Koalas, Sea Princesses is Hannah Schofield's only other credit. Unfortunately it has proven impossible to locate her on other platforms, thus a screenshot of Juli and Jessi is used here.
Alex Cook – Matilda, Vivi
Tumblr media
Famous for her breakout role as a child actress in the pay TV drama Love My Way as Lou Jackson, Alex Cook has also appeared in other Australian productions. She was also a producer in a number of shorts before becoming a theatre agent for Mollison Keightley Management.
Keith Buckley – Shark King, Octopus King
Tumblr media
Also known as Keith Alexander, Keith Buckley previously voiced John Tracy in addition to narrating the 1968 film Thunderbird 6. During the 60's and 70's, he has also had roles in UK dramas such as Joe 90, The Secret Service and UFO. After moving back to Australia, he has featured in local productions (including Bernard the Dog in the 2011 3D revival of Bananas in Pyjamas) and does various narrations and voiceovers for documentaries and advertisements. Recently, he was also a guest on The Gerry Anderson Podcast.
He is not to be mistaken for the English actor Keith Buckley, who died in December 2020.
Mary-Ann Henshaw – Octopus Queen, “Jaune” (Lost), Marli, Camarina, Elektra (S2)
Tumblr media
(screencap taken from The Summer of 77, 2001)
Mary-Ann Henshaw's only other role in Australian children's television was Amy in the original Bananas in Pyjamas from 1992 to 2001. After Sea Princesses, Mary-Ann Henshaw was never featured in other productions nor was she locatable on other platforms, so any recent news on her is unknown.
Olivia Pigeot – Miss Marla
Tumblr media
While Olivia Pigeot continues to feature in Australian productions, she has also been a yoga teacher and in 2019, founded Bondi Kids Drama, offering classes and workshops for primary school children in drama and short film.
Robina Beard – Starfish Grandmother
Tumblr media
From the 60s to the 80s, Robina Beard was best known as Madge the Manicurist in Palmolive ads for Australia and New Zealand. She has appeared in various stage and TV roles and in 2018, published a book titled My Life – Your Soaking In It. In January 2011, she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for her service to the arts before receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Australian Dance Awards in July that same year.
John Leary – Caton
Tumblr media
In addition to his roles in television, film and theatre, John Leary hosts The Saturday Quiz podcast where he asks guests questions from the quiz in The Saturday Paper.
Jamie Croft – Caramelo, Mr Bernardo (S2)
Tumblr media
As a child actor, Jamie Croft played Billy Moss in the Australian soap opera A Country Practice and Fred Kelman in the 1995 Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers movie. Later on, Jamie Croft transitioned from acting to being a music producer and event manager, eventually becoming the manager to singer-songwriter Harrison Storm (according to his LinkedIn profile).
So from the credited cast of Sea Princesses, who would be most likely to reprise their role if there were to be a revival or reboot? Well, I think it would be easier to ask who would be unlikely to reprise their role, and that list would include Shannon Murphy, Jacqui Lofgren, Hannah Schofield, Mary-Ann Henshaw and Jamie Croft. But hey, in my personal project, who cares about availability? As long as they aren't dead, I can say that they "reprised" their roles all I want. Well, except for a few times in the past, but that's the exception rather than the rule.

7+ Best Castlemaine Festivals and Events
Discover Community Within Castlemaine
With a rich history of gold mining, this convenient two-hour drive from Melbourne is a hot spot for year-long festivals. We can’t wait to reveal Victoria’s best-kept secret in Castlemaine and promote its strong reputation for creative expression. Within our list of the top 7 Castlemaine festivals, we’ve also included two bonus community events that might not even be on your radar.
Besides festivals, Castlemaine is a great weekend destination, packed with fantastic foodie spots, museums, and art exhibitions. Regardless of how you connect with the creative inside you, find the perfect festival weekend to explore in Castlemaine, Victoria!

The Top 7 Castlemaine Festivals
Castlemaine Fringe Festival
The younger sister to the state festival, the Castlemaine Fringe festival celebrated 30 years of expression based on pillars of inclusivity, accessibility, and community participation. We acknowledge our stages are built on the lands of the Dja Dja Wurrung People, and continue to pay our respects to the traditional owners of the land, the local elders, and emerging leaders.
This year, the festival took place from March 17 to April 2nd and featured various guests and performers like author Carmel Bird, and musical acts Luke Warm and Jadebyrd. The closing party was held at The Tappy beer garden, and the energy was vibrant with blues and beats from Oliver and the Elsewheres, Out of Abingdon, and visual artist Liminal Treats.
Castlemaine Jazz Festival
The annual Castlemaine Jazz Festival takes over downtown filling the streets with rhythmic melodies and brass. Taking place on the Kings Birthday Weekend, we recommend booking accommodation now to avoid disappointment. Completely organized and operated by volunteers, this Castlemaine festival started with a discussion among musicians in 2012. It took a few years to understand the collective vision, but this year marks the seventh Castlemaine Jazz Festival and the future only promises more growth.
Tumblr media
Last year’s highlights included three separate stages with jazz musicians like Melba Big Band, Brooklyn ‘86’, and Jon Magill’s Groove Congress. This year, there will be performances on six stages with returning acts and first-comers. Early bird tickets are available until May 14th and more information is available online for scheduling.
Castlemaine Festival Of Gardens
The Castlemaine Festival of Gardens occurs every two years with the next scheduled festival taking place in 2024. Aligning with Melbourne Cup Week, private and historical gardens open their doors to the public for two days only. This Castlemaine festival has been running for twenty-six years and provides a running backlog of each garden featured on its website. After crossing the threshold to witness the natural beauty of each garden, guests will also learn the property’s history and facts about birds who frequent the bushes. From cozy cottage plots to expansive and breathtaking historical properties, every anthophilous in Australia will save the date!
Castlemaine Pride Festival
The Castlemaine Pride Festival began in 2018 when Martyn Shaddick, Sherene Clow, and Marion Yates organized a Pride Picnic to thank everyone who supported the queer community during the marriage equality debate. Mark the calendars this year for April 29th to May 6th, and connect while celebrating with your rainbow-chosen family. Come together and learn the history surrounding the art of drag or sign up to watch the Queer Film Festival. We believe in standing proud and supporting our community now more than ever. Volunteer opportunities are available.
Castlemaine Documentary Festival
Calling all brand-new or senior documentary enthusiasts! This Castlemaine festival is scheduled for June 16-19th and is a weekend dedicated to the love of film. In the past, the documentary festival has taken place in July, but these June dates provide a unique opportunity for festival-goers to experience art-based activities for the entire month of June! While the festival schedule is yet to be confirmed, we do know events will include eight feature documentaries, an augmented reality showcase, and a new family and youth-focused Yurt. The Castlemaine C-Doc Club is responsible for the annual festival, plus they organize workshops throughout the year to connect with the community. These workshops held throughout the year include learning new skills for video editing, and a Masterclass on Storytelling.
Castlemaine Agricultural Show
Tumblr media
The VAS or Victorian Agriculure Shows promote the community and movement of Australia. Passed down through generations we are meeting the next generation interested in activities relevant to the Agricultural Show movement. Unlike the other festivals mentioned above, the VAS hosts a feature show in April and then the Main Show takes place November 3-4. At both shows, you can expect Victoria’s excellence and events in beef and dairy cattle, sheep, saddle horse championships, and much more! Besides livestock events, there will also be home crafts, photography, and fleece competitions.
Castlemaine State Festival
The first Castlemaine State Festival happened in 1976. Today, it’s recognized as Australia’s longest-running flagship regional arts festival. While the event has already taken place this year, highlights include performances from Jaguar Jonze, KIAN, The Bulletes, and Lizzy Welsh with the Bendigo Symphony Orchestra. Visual and literary panels and experiences included a multichannel video installation titled Essays on Earth, and discussions with Alice Zaslasvsky and Jane Grylls.
Tumblr media
The Castlemaine State Festival is always a fun and exciting experience perfect for friends or families. Taking over downtown Castlemaine with visual art exhibitions, guests are swept up in the joy and camaraderie of supporting artists in local venues.
Check Out These Honorable Mentions In Castlemaine Festivals
The Castlemaine Artists Market takes place on the fourth Sunday of every month from 10-3. Browse locally created artisanal goods and place unique orders to pick up the following month.
For guests not afraid of the dark, the annual Goldfields Gothic Festival of Dark Ideas takes place for three days in August 2023. As per the organisers, the festival is inspired by, “the dark undercurrent of the 1850s Victorian Goldfields and intriguing stories of the past.” Upcoming highlights include cemetery tours and workshops, and the dress-up encouraged Maldon Gothic and Victorian Picnic.
