Chapter 2

XY was staring at the ceiling. A week has already passed. And he still couldn't stop thinking about the day he spent with Marinette. It was the most fun he'd had in a while.

Before the whole Silencer fiasco, his father would not stop pressuring him to produce a new song. So when they met up for dinner and his dad came up with the idea of stealing someone else's music, he couldn’t bring himself to decline.

XY knew it was wrong.

But all he wanted was the chance to finally impress his dad. Bob Roth might not have the best attitude towards him, but he was all XY had left.

Xy already lost his mom. He would not lose his dad too.

At least, that's what he believed. He should've known that his father was just using him for money. According to his dad, money was the most valuable thing in life.

XY scoffed. He should've known better. He should've known that all his father thought of hi-

He felt a buzz in his pocket and his face immediately brightened. Marinette just texted him!

Marinette: what's up?

Marinette: have u been inspired yet?

Marinette gave XY the idea to just sit back and let inspiration hit him. It was a common idea but it was one that most people tend to forget in the long run.

XY: nothing much

XY: and nope.

XY: my dad has been pressuring me to come up with something tho

Marinette: ignore him

Marinette: he's just mad cause he can't get any ladies

The three dots popped up on his screen.

Marinette: OH CRAP I'M LATE

Marinette: TTYL.

XY rolled his eyes and smiled.

They've been texting back and forth these past few days. He's learned so many things about her and vice versa.

It was nice. It's been a while since XY has had a friend.

Maybe she'll be even more, XY couldn’t help but think as he ran a hand through his hair.

"Huh," XY said out loud. "Even more"

And just like that, inspiration for his next song hit him.

Marinette was thinking of a certain blonde-haired, blue-eyed musician when she heard her phone ring.

"Tikki!" she screamed, staring at her phone as if it was Hawkmoth himself.. "He's calling me. XY is calling me."

Tikki sighed and floated next to Marinette, "Maybe you should answer it. It would be pretty rude to keep him waiting."

"Right, right," Marinette answered his call and hoped her voice didn’t sound as squeaky as she thought it did.. "Hey."

"Hey."

There was a moment of awkward silence.

Marinette didn’t know what to do. She glanced at the small goddess.

Tikki rolled her eyes at their awkwardness as she gestured to the phone. Ask him why he called you, she mouthed to Marinette.

Marinette nodded. That was a smart idea. "So," Marinette cleared her throat. "Why did you call me?"

"Right, Uhm." Marinette heard him shuffling around his room. "You know how you've been asking me if I was inspired and stuff?"

Marinette's eyes grew wide and a huge smile took over her face as she started to nod before remembering that he couldn't see her. "Yep." she eagerly said, "Did you find any?"

"Yes!" Marinette could hear the excitement in his voice. "I was actually wondering if you wanted to design the outfits for my music video."

Marinette's eyes looked shocked. "Yes!" she jumped around in excitement before remembering she was still in a call with XY. "Why me though?"

XY’s voice sounded confused.. "What do you mean, why you? You're literally perfect for it. You're talented. Plus, everyone loves your designs."

Marinette’s cheeks resembled a tomato. She has never been more thankful for the fact that he couldn't see her right now.

"Thank you." Marinette managed to mumble. "That really means a lot."

"You're welcome." XY said. Marinette had a feeling he was smiling though. "I have to go and have my dad listen to the demo. But I'll text you later, okay?"

"Yep," Marinette whispered and gave Tikki a cookie. "Good luck. I know that whatever song you came up with is gonna sound good. No matter what he'll say."

Marinette heard a faint "Thanks" from the phone before the call ended.

Marinette screamed into her pillow and looked up and saw Tikki look at her with amusement. “I think I like him.”

"So, what do you think?" XY asked as his father finished listening to his song. "Is it bad? Do you think people will like it?"

Bob Roth grinned at his son. "This is a Masterpiece. Where did you find this?" He gestured to the video of XY singing the song, "Who did you steal this from?"

XY's proud smile immediately turned into a scowl. "What do you mean, who did I steal this from?" He yelled at his dad, his blue eyes glaring at him as he grabbed the demo from the table. "I made it. I came up with it myself." XY felt his eyes tearing up. "Something you would actually know if you thought of me as something more than a money-making machine."

How could he? XY thought as he climbed up the stairs. Is it that hard to believe that I could come up with something good?

XY slammed his door shut. "All I wanted was to prove to him that I wasn't a talentless son." XY put his hands on his face. "I just wanted to make him proud."

XY felt a buzz in his pocket and immediately knew that it was Marinette. After all, she’s the only one that ever texts him.

Marinette: how did it go?

Marinette: did he like it?

XY wiped away the tears that were starting to come out of his eyes. He couldn't help but smile. Marinette certainly had an effect on him.

XY: he called it a masterpiece

Marinette: yes! I knew he would like it.

XY: yeah

XY: but then he asked me who i stole it from

Marinette: THAT JERK

Marinette: WTF

Marinette: THAT's SO MESSED UP

Marinette: HOW COULD HE-

Marinette: DO YOU WANT ME TO BEAT HIM UP FOR YOU????

XY laughed at her text messages. He only started to text her and he already felt better.

XY: no, it's fine

XY: i actually yelled at him

Marinette: ...

Marinette: do you feel better?

XY: actually, yep.

XY: he's a really sucky father

Marinette: for some reason, a lot of the blondes i know have a toxic parent

Marinette: it's kinda sad

XY: maybe it's a paris thing

They texted back and forth, XY laughing at the memes Marinette sent.

XY: You're definitely a daughter of Athena

Marinette: ( ⚆ _ ⚆ )

Marinette: is that a percy jackson reference i see

XY: yep

XY: have u read the books?

Marinette: duh

Marinette: you haven't lived til you've read the books

Marinette: sadly, the movies sucked tho

XY: I KNOW

XY: ANNABETH WASN'T EVEN BLONDE

Marinette: EXACTLY!!

Marinette: SJSJSJSJSJSJ

Marinette: THE MOVIES SCARED ME FOR LIFE

XY: oh yeah

XY: before i forget

XY: what's ur insta?

Marinette: which one

XY scrunched his eyebrows up in confusion.

XY: What do you mean by which one?

Marinette: i have two

Marinette: one as my personal one and the other one for commissions and stuff

XY: ohhh

XY: smart

Marinette: i know ;)

Marinette: my personal one is @Mdupaincheng and the one for my commissions one if @MDCdesigns

XY switched his apps and searched up Marinette's personal instagram. He clicked on the first result that came up.

The profile picture was Marinette in a blue, silky dress that went just above her ankle. There was a slit on her left leg that showed her knee. It was nighttime and Marinette was practically glowing under the city lights. She was staring at something on her right side, with one hand running through her silky black hair which was down for once.

She looked hot.

After XY stopped admiring her profile picture, he finally noticed her follower count.

She had 200,000 followers. 200,000.

It wasn't as high as XY's follower count, that was still quite a lot.

XY: i didn't know u were insta famous

Marinette: wdym?

Marinette: which acc

XY: ur personal one

XY: u have over 200k followers

Marinette thought that she read his text wrong. There's no way that Marinette had that many followers. 200,000? There was no way.

Marinette: ur lying

XY: I'm not.

XY: check ur acc

It's been a while since Marinette has logged onto her personal account. The hate she got the last time she's been signed in was too much for her and when Alya told her to log out and just focus on her other account, @MDCdesigns, she couldn't bring herself to argue against her.

Marinette hasn't even thought of that account since that day. So when she logged in and saw that XY wasn't lying, she accidentally dropped her phone in shock.

Tikki looked at Marinette with a questioning look.

Marinette ignored her kwami and texted the blue-eyes boy back.

Marinette: HOLY SHIT

Marinette: I HAVE 200k FOLLOWERS

Marinette: HOW TF DID THAT HAPPEN

XY: when was the last time you checked ur acc

Marinette: about 3 months ago

Marinette: the media thought i was adrien's gf and his fangirls came at me

Marinette: i got a ton of hate and a friend of mine told me to log out and just focus on my @MDCdesigns acc

Marinette: so i did

Marinette: i haven't thought abt that acc since then

XY: the fangirls were probably just jealous

XY: it's been months so they probably calmed down

XY: I'm looking through the comments rn and so far the latest hate comment you've got was about 2 weeks ago

XY: you've got a bit of a fanbase yk

Marinette: WHAT DO I DO

Marinette: DO I JUST CONTINUE NOT TO POST OR SHOULD I POST SOMETHING ON MY STORY ABT HOW THANKFUL I AM FOR 200k

Marinette: HOW COME NONE OF MY FRIENDS TOLD ME ABT THIS

XY: don't post anything rn

XY: post a picture of yourself and the caption it something that shows ur thankful for the number of followers u received

XY: OH

XY: a few hours before u post the picture, make sure u post on ur story abt how ur back from ur break on social media

XY: that way ppl will understand why u haven't been active

XY: it'll also have ppl prepared for ur post and they'll be waiting for u to post it

XY: that'll give u more engagement and stuff

whatever a sun will always sing (is this)

@imnin drew some really hecking cute lukanette art and instagram has been feeding us so naturally i had to write about it. also:

Juleka was supposed to be here. Again. And she wasn’t. Again.

Marinette was starting to get the feeling that maybe this was happening on purpose.

To be fair, the first time wasn’t on purpose; that was back when they were fourteen, and Juleka genuinely had forgotten that Marinette was supposed to come over with the leggings she’d mended. That wasn’t so bad; she’d spent the afternoon with Luka instead, and Luka was always fun to be around. He played all kinds of music for her to fill up all the empty spaces. He talked to her about everything from the classes he didn’t miss taking to the question of just how small they were compared to the rest of the universe. He even took selfies with her and let her post them to Instagram. Sometimes, if she was lucky, he’d give her a guitar lesson or two.

He was… he was a really good guy to be around. He was a good guy to be alone with.

Obviously Juleka must have thought so too; this was her brother they were talking about here. But then… Juleka had always been so quietly supportive when it came to everything about Adrien. Had something changed? Had she found out what Luka had said at the TV station just before Kitty Section’s debut? Or had she always known about Luka’s feelings, and started to feel guilty that she was helping to push Marinette in the other direction when they were in middle school?

Whatever the reason was, over the months, Juleka had become really good at “forgetting” to stick around whenever Marinette had something for her. And the first handful of times, it wasn’t so bad. Luka was almost always there to keep her company, with his collection of guitar picks and a pocket full of quiet, meaningful conversation. But then she’d made the stupid, stupid mistake of telling Adrien her feelings outright, like the brave soul she thought she was, and she’d made the stupid, stupid mistake of letting his rejection get to her. And she’d tried to do literally anything else to keep from thinking about it. And she’d channeled all her energy into making some new clothes—and when she came to the Liberty, Juleka wasn’t there to try them on.

And she’d sunk to her knees with the bag in her hands, and she’d cried. Like a baby. Like a crocodile.

And Luka was there. Just the way he always had been. He didn’t ask questions. He didn’t take anything. He just gave. Just the way he always had given.

Well… it wasn’t entirely true that Juleka was never there. It was just that Marinette noticed the times she wasn’t home—the times she spent with Luka—more than the times she was. And that, as time went on, it seemed to happen more often. Juleka was there just enough times—the times that they actually scheduled pick-ups and drop-offs—for it not to bother her. Especially after the crying incident. And, well, Marinette wasn’t particularly upset if she popped over unannounced. It was on her, first of all, and besides that, Luka still made great company. And great music.

Which was exactly how Marinette found him this time when she made her way below deck: guitar in his lap, music notebook spread open beside him, the back of his head pressed against the wall. His eyes were closed, just the way they had been when she’d first met him a couple of years back, except this time, he didn’t look totally at peace. In fact, aside from that one incident with Bob Roth, it was probably the most frustrated she’d ever seen him. Which wasn’t to say he was never frustrated at all. He was just… impossibly good at hiding it.

She cleared her throat, just to let him know that she was there—he’d paid her the courtesy so many times in the past that it was only fair—and when he opened his eyes, she smiled and clambered up beside him on the bed. “Got something on the brain?” she asked by way of greeting, smoothing out the wrinkle in his brow with her thumb. It felt… intimate, doing that, and that was saying something considering the fact that she’d kissed his cheek at least twice.

Luka grinned right back and made room for her. “Everybody’s always got something on the brain,” he said. “We’d probably be dead otherwise.”

“Literally, or philosophically?”

Under his breath, he laughed. “Got something for Jules again?”

“Gee,” Marinette said, her voice dripping with sarcasm as she held up a paper shopping bag. “How’d you guess?”

“You know where to leave it,” he replied with a playful roll of his eyes, but his expression melted into confusion when she set the bag on Juleka’s bed and came back to him. “Need to wait for her to try it on so you can make adjustments?”

“Nah.” Marinette scooted back, resting against the wall as she hugged her knees to her chest. “I just wanted to spend a little extra time with you before I go. If. If that’s okay. Is it okay? ‘Cause if it’s not okay, you know you can tell me—”

“Marinette,” he interrupted; he was always so good at doing that when she was about to spiral downward into yet another ramble. “It’s never not okay.”

The smile he gave her was reassuring enough. All his smiles seemed to do that, relaxed her so much that sometimes she felt like crumpling into tears. “Okay,” she murmured, shifting just a bit closer and resting her head on his shoulder, her eyes fixed on his guitar. “Tell me about your music, then. Are you working on a new song?”

“Sort of.” She couldn’t see his face, but something told her that knot in his brow was back. “D’you ever get that feeling when you’re designing? Where… you can see everything perfectly in your head, and you’ve got the motivation and the energy, but…” He strummed a sad-sounding chord. “There’s just a wall there. Keeping you from getting it out at all. You know what I mean?”

Marinette groaned. “I totally know what you mean.” And then, with a nervous laugh, “Sometimes I just keep at it until I get so frustrated I start crying, but. I’d never tell you to do that.”

“No, no,” he said, letting go of his guitar to gently cradle the back of her head and keep her close, and she relaxed instantly at the touch. It was so easy, being like this with him, and she still had no idea if she was supposed to thank Juleka or not. “Don’t you do that either, that’s not good for you.”

“I know,” she mumbled. “Usually my mom will come up and make me meditate with her, or Papa will call me down to decorate cookies or cakes with him. Just something to get my mind off of it, or get inspired by something else.” She flicked her gaze up. “Maybe that’s what you need?”

“Well, I was already inspired by something else.” If he kept stroking her hair like that—no matter how absentminded—she swore she was going to fall asleep. “Just something I read. That’s what made me want to write the song in the first place.” He let go, picked out a few notes and chords. “It’s supposed to sound unforgettable.”

She smiled, closed her eyes and felt the ripple of muscles in his arm as he played. “But your music’s already unforgettable.”

Luka laughed to himself, probably in thanks at her vote of confidence. “Nah, I mean… I mean like, ‘first kiss’ levels of unforgettable.”

Oh.

Marinette went quiet, felt a pit open up in her stomach. She tried not to shift too uncomfortably next to him, tried to play it off like she was just letting the words sink in. But with Luka, it was far too hard to hide things. Especially when he could play them out within seconds.

He didn’t. He only looked her way, concerned. “Marinette? Did I say something weird?”

“No, no!” She might have shaken her head a little too fast; it made her feel a little dizzy afterwards. “No, I was just… thinking.”

“About your first kiss?”

She laughed hollowly. “No, that’s… that’s complicated.” What was she supposed to tell him? That she’d only ever kissed someone—really kissed someone—twice, and that was only as a superhero? And that she couldn’t even remember one of them no matter how much she racked her brain for the memory? And that it had been something like two years and she couldn’t even remembeer what they felt like? And that, sometimes, it felt like it really had happened in some other timeline? Some other dimension? “I dunno. Maybe I haven’t really had it. It’s weird. It is weird, right?”

Luka fixed her with the sort of gaze that made her feel like he could dredge that memory right up. The kind that always made her feel like he really knew her. Knew the parts that no one else ever would. “I don’t think it’s weird that you’ve never been kissed before,” he said. “Or, I mean… I also don’t think it’s weird that you have… trouble, figuring out what your experiences are. What you want to claim. It’s hard.” He put his guitar aside. “Being a teenager is hard.”

“You can say that again.”

“Okay.” He grinned. “Being a teenager is hard.”

She gave him a good-natured shove, enough to make him topple over a little; sometimes she forgot her own strength, even out of costume. When he righted himself again, she went back to leaning on him, his arm comfortable around her waist. “Luka?” she said after a moment. “What was your first kiss like? Was it really unforgettable?”

Luka’s pauses were always thoughtful, and this one was no different. Instead of strumming his guitar, he traced idle patterns over her with his thumb, as if he were playing her instead. It tickled the first few times he’d done it, but eventually she’d gotten used to the feeling, and now it felt… safe. Special. Maybe even confusing. Was this a thing friends did? Could do?

Eventually, he said, “I guess so, but not in the way you’d think. It’s more that it’s just… stuck in my mind as a thing that happened to me.” He shrugged. “It was at some party. I figured I might as well be social with some of the kids in my grade, and of course Ma was all right with it. They were playing one of those games. You know the one.”

Marinette felt her face go hot and her stomach turn. She knew a few. “The one with the bottle?” she asked. “Or the one with the closet?”

“Kind of both. You spun the bottle, and then you had to go into a closet with the other person.” There was something in his voice that sounded almost… guilty. “The girl was nice, and I kinda liked her, but…” His fingers twitched. “It felt like everything was going so fast. I couldn’t keep up, even when I wanted to. And besides that, I… I guess, whatever magic you’re supposed to feel… I didn’t feel it. It was just somebody’s mouth on my mouth.” He took a deep breath that she felt more than heard. “I didn’t hate it. It was fine, I just… would do it over if I could.”

Marinette didn’t know what to say except, “Oh.” She didn’t want him to think she felt sorry for him, because she figured he didn’t want pity. It was just something that had happened to him, just something that he unpacked and felt for a while before he quietly put it away and moved on to the next thing. Part of her wished she were as good at reading hearts as he was. As good at calming them down. “Hey… Luka?”

“Yeah?”

“Do you want a do-over?” She didn’t know what had possessed her to ask. She just wanted to. Because they were comfortable, and here, and right. It was right. And it was probably exactly what Juleka wanted to happen while she was gone.

Luka didn’t answer at first, only slid his arm away enough for her to wonder if she’d said something wrong. When she turned to him, he was giving her that deep stare again. The soul-reading kind. The kind that made her wonder if his heart was pounding in his head the way hers was. “Do you want something to claim?”

Marinette held her breath, looked from his eyes to his lips and back again, and nodded. “If that’s okay.”

His face broke into a smile. “It’s never not okay.”

It wasn’t as though she’d never thought about kissing Luka. It had come up sometimes, little blips in her middle-school brain that sometimes felt like betrayal. And then, as the months passed, it felt less like betrayal, and more like possibility, until one day she caught herself daydreaming about it in her literature class. His hands on her face, his lips moving with hers, his breathy laughs fanning across her cheek before he went in for more on her front doorstep, just out of her father’s sight. Just like the ones she’d seen on TV through the spaces between her fingers. It made her relieved that her teacher had them sitting in reverse alphabetical order, so that she could be completely mortified and flustered and curious all the way in the back of the class.

This wasn’t like that at first. Not the daydream kissing. Not the TV kissing. His lips were trembling as soon as they touched hers, barely-there and delicate, asking over and over for permission. It wasn’t until she granted it with a firmer press of her mouth that he tilted his head, cradled her cheek, sighed all the tension out through his nose. And Marinette supposed, even then, even after they both relaxed into it, that it wasn’t daydream kissing, or TV kissing. It was just kissing. With Luka. Quiet, and soft, and uncertain, and real.

He’d barely pulled back before he whispered, “I know it’s selfish, but I really wanna do that again.”

She didn’t realize she’d curled her fingers into the front of his band shirt until she let go. “Then do it again,” she whispered back.

This time, Luka didn’t hesitate. He trapped her there in the best possible way, pausing just so after each kiss like, for some reason, he couldn’t believe this was happening. She wasn’t sure if this still counted as a first, or if they were tumbling headlong into seconds and thirds and fourths. But it was happening still, and all those knots in her stomach coursed all the way through her blood, and when she moved closer to meet him, she felt his hands at her waist, tugging her along until she was seated in his lap. and her fingers were laced behind his neck. Like he was the trapped one. Like he’d always wanted to be, or, perhaps, like he always had been when it came to her.

This was better than bottles and closets, better than demon butterflies and cataclysmic lipstick, better than things she wished she could forget and remember all at once. This was enough for her to wonder about the exact moment that a daydream became a memory, or if they could ever be one and the same, or if her teacher could read her mind when she thought about it in the back of that old classroom.

Eventually, he slowed them down, took that quiet lead the way he somehow always managed to. One, two, three more delicate kisses, and he pulled back for regrettable good, their noses and forehead pressed together. She wasn’t sure if he was looking at her, or with what kind of love, but she was too comfortable to want to open her eyes and find out.

It was the closest it felt to TV, and Marinette wanted to play it over and over and over.

“How was that?” he finally said to break the silence as she sat back. His voice was just loud enough to be more than a whisper. He held the words between the two of them, like he trusted her to carry them in her heart. To carry him in her heart, too.

Marinette pressed her lips together in a firm line to try and keep from smiling, but she failed anyway. “Pretty unforgettable.”

Yeah. It was the kind of thing he could write songs about.

The first thing she thought, while he was smiling back at her like that, was, I don’t want to forget again.

The second thing she thought was, uh oh.

Crazy Composed: Chapter 1

Written for Day 1 (Eye Contact) of @luxyweek

Fic summary: Luka Couffaine is known for his saint-like composure, but five seconds with Xavier-Yves Roth is enough to make him completely lose his cool. And yet, after the two meet again at Le Grand Paris, they somehow find themselves spending more time together—which either means that something is going on between them, or Luka Couffaine has officially gone crazy. (According to his friends, it’s a bit of both.)

“Thanks for staying to help,” Marinette murmurs to Luka, as she picks up a macaron with a pair of tongs and sets it on a businessman's plate. “I know you only came to the hotel to make a delivery.”

“It’s fine,” Luka says. Pouring another glass of punch, he smiles awkwardly at the businessman, then sets the glass alongside a dozen others. “You needed help, so I’m happy to be here.”

Normally, Luka would stay as far away from a catering event as possible. These sorts of things are always crowded and cramped, loud with chattering, and he tends to prefer quieter, emptier spaces. But the moment he’d walked into the hotel and seen Marinette off to the side wearing a half-smile-half-grimace, he’d resolved to stay and make her job easier.

So far, nothing too bad has happened. From what Marinette has told him, it’s some sort of business conference, which would explain why everyone is wearing suits and ties. Luka feels woefully underdressed in his hoodie and sneakers, but Marinette has assured him that no one will notice what he’s wearing underneath the apron.

The calm shatters when a familiar magenta-haired woman rushes up to the table, slipping between two people in line.

“Oh, Marinette,” Penny says. “Thank goodness. I thought I saw you down here earlier.”

“Penny!” Marinette says, eyes wide. “Um, what is it? Does Jagged need something?”

“There was a meeting earlier with some music folks. Somehow, Jagged and XY ended up in the same room, and…” Penny sighs, pinching the bridge of her nose. “Well, Bob Roth is in another meeting, and neither one of them are listening to me. I assume since you’ve dealt with both of them before…?”

Marinette offers Penny a strained smile. “Say no more! I’ll see what I can do.” She glances at Luka. “Do you want to come? I know you’re a fan of Jagged, but…”

But you got akumatized the last time you spoke to Xavier-Yves Roth and his father. That’s probably what Marinette is too nice to say out loud.

Luka clenches his jaw. “I’ll come with you. Maybe the sight of my face will remind XY to watch himself.” Belatedly, he remembers that Penny is still standing there. He clears his throat. “I’m not going to cause any trouble, I promise.”

Penny just smiles. “I’m sure you two can handle them. Oh, and here—give me that apron, Marinette. I’ll take over while you deal with the problem upstairs.”

Marinette slips off the apron and passes it over to Penny. “What floor?”

“Fourth,” Penny says. “Room 412.”

“Got it.”

Marinette takes off at a sprint toward the elevators, leaving Luka to throw his apron on the table and follow her. They stick to the perimeter of the room, avoiding the crowds of people milling around the center.

“You don’t have to help, you know,” Marinette says, as they wait for the elevator. “I know you and XY aren’t on great terms.”

Luka folds his arms across his chest. He’s used to people thinking that he’s calm and collected, so he doesn’t appreciate the implication that he can’t handle a confrontation with someone who has two letters for a name.

Well, technically it’s just a stage name, but still. How does no one else see how stupid it is?

“I’m fine,” Luka assures her. “I know I didn’t handle things well last time. But I’ve learned from that mistake—I won’t let the Roths get under my skin.”

The elevator dings, and he and Marinette step inside.

Silence falls between them. Now, of all times, Luka is reminded of the fact that Marinette never really responded to his confession. He hasn’t exactly retracted it, and she hasn’t explicitly rejected it, so where do they stand, exactly?

While he’s sure that he still has a crush on her, anyone with half a brain can see that she and Adrien are a perfect match. (Of course, anyone with half a brain could also see that the two of them are probably Ladybug and Chat Noir, so maybe the people of Paris just aren’t that smart.) Luka has a feeling that any romance he starts with Marinette will ultimately lead to her realizing that Adrien is the one for her, and he’s not too interested in being a relationship catalyst.

But Luka is also someone who says what he means, so he’s not going to take back a confession that’s still technically true. Unfortunately, that has resulted in the current awkward silence, where Luka can feel the anxiety rolling off Marinette in waves. No doubt she’s worried that he’ll try to make a move.

Should he say something? No, because what if she’s not thinking that? Then he’ll just seem weird and anxious.

Luka sighs to himself. He wishes that people were easier to understand. Do they really think that his musical talent makes up for the fact that other human beings are a mystery to him? It’s a good cover, he supposes: being able to play a few bars based on a person’s aura, in a smooth way that makes them think he understands them. Why, yes, fellow human, I completely understand you! Listen to this G-major chord! I heard it in your heart.

It’s not a lie, though—Luka does understand emotions. He just doesn’t understand the thoughts that come with them.

Fortunately, Luka’s musings fill up the time it takes to get to Room 412, sparing him from any awkward exchanges with Marinette.

“Yeah, Fang!” an accented voice—unmistakably Jagged Stone’s—yells. “You want this cell phone? Been a while since you had some crunchy technology, huh?”

“Give it back!” another voice whines. Luka rolls his eyes. There’s no question that’s Xavier-Yves Roth.

Marinette glances at Luka, then knocks on the door.

“Why should I give it back?” Jagged snaps. “You were going to post a picture of me with the caption Ragged Stone. I’m not a has-been! I’m rock-‘n-roll!”

Luka sighs. “Is he always like this?”

“Pretty much,” Marinette says. Her foot taps rapidly against the carpeted floor, and she knocks again. “Uh, Jagged! It’s Marinette Dupain—”

The door flies open, and Luka’s sort-of-idol Jagged Stone is standing on the other side, signature guitar slung over his shoulder. “Marinette!” he says, his accent butchering the r in her name. He grabs her shoulder and shoots her a finger gun. “Great! I’m so glad you’re here. Deux-letters here is trying to harass me with his Instagram or whatever. Do me a favor and keep an eye on him? I’m all fired up now, so I need to get a drink or something.”

“Um.” Marinette leans around Jagged and peers inside. “You didn’t actually feed XY’s cell phone to Fang, did you?”

“Nah. I’ve got it right here. I only destroy my property, you know? I’m not a vandal.” Jagged pulls the phone from his pocket and drops it into Marinette’s hand. Then his eyes fall on Luka. “Oh, hey! You’re Marinette’s guitar friend. Luka, right? Sorry for arguing with your mom that one time. You’ve got talent. We should work together sometime! Any friend of Marinette’s is a friend of mine.”

He pats Luka on the shoulder, then squeezes between him and Marinette. Grabbing his guitar, he starts playing it as he walks toward the elevator, filling the hallway with the sound of rock ‘n roll.

Luka stares after him, slightly dazed. “Did he just say he wanted to work with me sometime?”

“He did!” Marinette says. “And he’ll keep his promise, too. Jagged is a good guy.” She purses her lips and puffs out a breath. “But we’ve got a bigger problem.”

“Right,” Luka says, sighing. “Babysitting XY?”

“And Fang,” Marinette says. “Jagged left him here, and I doubt he and XY get along.”

Grimacing, Luka looks through the doorway at Jagged’s pet crocodile. Fang is lounging on a sofa, yellow eyes fixed on XY, who’s draped across an armchair on the other side of the coffee table. XY looks every bit as infuriating as Luka remembers; his lazy pose makes Luka’s fists clench involuntarily.

“Stupid crocodile,” XY says, pouting. He grabs a pillow from behind his back and chucks it at Fang.

Fang growls and catches the pillow in his mouth, his large teeth instantly ripping it to shreds. Soon, all that’s left is a few shreds of fabric and stuffing that have fluttered to the ground.

Luka glares at XY. “Why would you throw something at a crocodile?”

XY shrugs. “It’s just a dumb lizard. Hey, are you room service? I want something to eat.”

Luka deeply inhales through his nose, calling on years of meditation to keep himself calm. “No, I…” He trails off as Fang crawls off the couch and starts plodding toward XY. “Uh.”

Marinette presses XY’s phone into Luka’s hand and rushes forward. “Fang!” she says, in the high-pitched way a person might talk to a puppy. “Hey, there! Who’s a good crocodile?”

Bizarrely, Fang stops and almost seems to smile at her. The song “Never Smile at a Crocodile” plays in Luka’s head, and even though he trusts Marinette to handle things, he can’t help but be slightly concerned.

Marinette pats her thighs and beckons Fang toward her, then starts backing toward a door off to the side. “Fang, do you want a bath? Some nice water? I bet that would feel nice. Why don’t we get you in the bath while we wait for Jagged?”

Apparently bath and Jagged are two of the words Fang knows, because he changes course and walks after Marinette to the bathroom.

“That was unbelievably stupid,” Luka tells XY.

“What do you mean?” XY says, waving a hand as he stares at the carpet. He doesn’t even have the decency to make eye contact with Luka when they’re talking. “Your girlfriend’s got it handled. I figured she would.”

“She’s not my—never mind. I’m not talking to you. It will just make me angry.”

Luka folds his arms across his chest and scans the room, waiting for Marinette to finish drawing Fang’s bath. He can hear the sound of running water echoing from the bathroom, though the noise isn’t as soothing as it could be when he knows it’s for a crocodile bath.

“How am I making you angry?” XY asks. “I’m just sitting here.”

It’s the WAY you’re sitting, Luka almost says, before he realizes how dumb that sounds. Instead, he just shrugs and stares at what little he can see of the bathroom through the open door. All he can make out is Marinette’s shoe and a giant crocodile tail, but it’s better than looking at XY’s face.

“Hey, can I have my phone?” XY asks.

“Why are you asking me?” Luka snaps.

“Because you’re holding it?”

Luka glances down at his hand, where sure enough, he is holding the phone Marinette gave him. The case is covered in some sort of obnoxious bling that makes Luka’s eyes burn. “Oh. Sorry.” Luka crosses over to XY’s chair and holds out the phone. “Here.”

XY grabs it from his hand without looking at him. “Thanks.”

Immediately, XY’s phone starts beeping, and a second later, an alarm tone goes off on Luka’s own cell phone. He digs it out of his pocket and sighs.

“What was that?” Marinette asks, running out of the bathroom with water dripping from her hands.

“Akuma alert,” Luka says flatly.

If his suspicions are correct, he knows exactly how this is about to go.

Marinette squeaks. “I, um—have to—macarons! Penny has no idea how to hold the macarons, and I…need to…go teach her.” She sprints across the room and pauses in the doorway, shifting from one foot to the other. “I’m really sorry, Luka. I hate to leave you two—”

“Go ahead,” Luka says, trying not to sound too resigned. “I know the…uh, macarons are important.”

With a nod, Marinette runs into the hallway and pulls the door shut behind her.

Luka wanders across the room to glance out the ornate hotel window. From this spot on the fourth floor, he can see part of the Place des Vosgues, along with some familiar houses and stores.

As he looks outside, though, he can feel eyes on him. It’s hard to describe—similar to when he senses a person’s mood—but someone is definitely staring at him.

Praying that it is not a hungry crocodile, he slowly turns around.

XY’s blue eyes are fixed on him, staring out from beneath his ridiculous blond hair. His brow is creased ever so slightly, almost with an expression of trepidation. But, well, why would XY be afraid of Luka? Luka’s the one whose career could be ended in an instant by XY’s capricious father. Luka doesn’t have the power to do anything to XY.

Luka stares back, hoping that XY gets the message. Don’t mess with me or my friends.

XY nods slowly and goes back to fiddling with his phone.

Luka’s fingers itch for his guitar, but of course, he didn’t bring it with him, since he thought this would be a quick delivery stop. Mirroring XY, he pulls out his own phone and pulls up his contacts. Surely there’s someone he can text to pass the time…

Adrien Agreste’s name stares back at him from the top of the list. Luka considers it—Adrien is pretty fun to talk to, and would definitely sympathize with Luka’s current plight—but then he realizes that if Adrien is Chat Noir, he’s probably busy fighting the akuma right now.

XY clears his throat. “Uh, you play bass?”

Luka scrolls further through his contacts, because surely XY isn’t talking to him. But when he glances up, XY’s eyes are fixed on him again.

“Me?” Luka says. “I play guitar.”

“Right,” XY says. “That’s the one with six strings.”

Luka barely resists rolling his eyes. “Yeah.”

XY doesn’t respond, so Luka goes back to his phone. He pulls up the Ladyblog and skims it for updates: apparently the akuma is some sort of food-themed monster stomping throughout the city, and Ladybug has yet to summon her Lucky Charm. Based on past data, Alya has projected the battle to last twenty minutes, and advises civilians to stay inside to avoid being trampled.

Really, though, wouldn’t it be better outside? XY isn’t outside. Luka will gladly risk getting crushed by an angry hamburger man if it means escaping this awkwardness.

“And you, uh,” XY says. “You’re in that cat band?”

Luka sighs, keeping his eyes on his phone. “Kitty Section, yeah.”

He braces himself for some taunt about the name—which Luka will fiercely defend, because cats are excellent, thank you very much—but instead XY just says, “Oh, that rings a bell.”

“It should,” Luka says, gritting his teeth, “since we’re the band you and your father stole from.”

“Stole is kind of harsh,” XY says. “I prefer inspired by.”

Luka glares at him. “Is that a joke?”

XY shrugs.

“Have you ever had an original musical thought?” Luka asks, before he can stop himself.

To his frustration, XY gives another shrug. “Eh. Everything’s unoriginal, you know?”

Technically, that’s true, and Luka would agree if the phrase was coming from an actual artist. But it’s coming from XY. Scowling, Luka says, “There’s a difference between unoriginal and plagiarized, you know.”

In Luka’s head and in front of his bathroom mirror, he’s played out this scenario dozens of times, and in those imaginary conversations, he has said much more insulting things to XY. Of course, Luka would never actually say any of those cruel things…but XY is testing his patience.

When he thinks about it, though, XY hasn’t done anything wildly offensive today, except make very unwanted small talk. And that’s infuriating in its own way. Luka wishes he would do something bad, so that his irritation felt more justified.

“Yeah, sorry,” XY says. “I didn’t realize that was illegal.”

“It’s not the illegal part that bothers me,” Luka says. He wonders if he should even bother trying to explain what’s actually wrong. “It’s that my friends and I worked hard on that song, and Marinette worked hard on those costumes, and your father threatened us and undermined our work. But it makes sense that legality is all you two are concerned about. After all, you can’t make as much money if your father is in jail.”

He bites down on his tongue the moment the words are out. Does XY just bring out the worst in Luka? Or does Luka have less self-control than he thought?

“I mean, yeah, we wouldn’t want to get sued,” XY says. He’s now tossing a TV remote up and down, catching it with one hand. He won’t meet Luka’s eyes, which might be for the better; if he did, he’d see Luka’s brief moment of guilt over snapping at him. “Besides, coming up with stuff is hard.”

“So you understand why we were upset,” Luka says slowly.

What, exactly, did he do to deserve this conversation? Is it the fact that he’s flirted with both Marinette and Adrien? Is the universe somehow blaming him for keeping those two apart? Because, if so, that’s wildly unfair. Marinette and Adrien could be the last two people on earth, and they’d still find a way to be oblivious about their feelings for each other.

“You could have been flattered,” XY says. “We thought your stuff was good enough to steal—um, borrow. Or…yeah.”

“Do you even hear yourself?” Luka asks in disbelief.

Maybe XY is wearing noise-cancelling earbuds that Luka can’t see. Maybe that’s how he manages to be so utterly tone-deaf.

“Yeah,” XY says. “Why? Am I talking too loud?”

Luka sighs. “You’re surrounded by music. You perform all the time. You must be able to come up with something on your own.”

Distantly, he thinks maybe he should give up on this conversation. He’s wasting his energy on XY. There are some people who just don’t get it, and this wouldn’t be the first time Luka has exhausted himself for a lost cause. (For instance: trying to convince his mother that maybe some laws are worth following for the public good, and that it might be a bad idea to install actual cannons on the Liberty.)

“Maybe,” XY says with another shrug. Luka thinks his shoulders must be pretty toned from all the shrugging he does. “But why bother, you know? The computers write lyrics and tunes that people like. Guaranteed success. Seems stupid to write my own stuff.”

If success was all that mattered when it came to music, maybe—and for XY and his father, that’s probably the case.

Luka’s curiosity gets the best of him, and he asks, “Have you ever tried to write your own songs?”

“Yeah, once.”

Luka frowns. Is this the set-up for a joke? Is there a punchline? XY doesn’t seem clever enough to set up a joke, given that Ragged Stone was the best insult he could come up with.

XY stops tossing the remote and holds it in his hand, fiddling with the buttons. “When I was eleven, I wrote a few songs and showed them to my dad.” Luka almost asks, Then why didn’t you keep doing that? but XY answers him in the next breath. “He said they were garbage. And I mean, he’d know, right? He’s, like, a music genius.”

Luka has doubts about how much of a music genius Bob Roth is, but he supposes it makes sense that eleven year-old XY would think that. Even now, XY probably conflates success and money with ingenuity.

But Luka’s mind is hung up on one word, blaring in his ears on repeat: GARBAGE.

Luka doesn’t want to have sympathy for XY. Sometimes, people are just rude and nasty, and they don’t deserve Luka’s pity. Unbidden, though, his brain is conjuring up a scene: a little blond kid with less-ridiculous hair, wide-eyed and hopeful, showing his father his songs—only to be told that they’re horrible.

Maybe that’s not how it went down. Maybe XY didn’t care about the rejection. But Luka has a feeling that, deep under XY’s blaisé exterior, he still remembers the pain of being told that his creations were worthless.

Damn it. Now Luka has sympathy for XY.

“That’s ridiculous,” Luka says. He tells himself that he’s just angry on behalf of a fellow musician—because technically, XY is a fellow musician. “I can only imagine if my mom told me that my songs were garbage when I was eleven. I mean, they probably weren’t that good, but—”

“Your songs?” XY interrupts. Luka’s sympathy ebbs, replaced by the irritation he feels every time XY opens his mouth. Luka shouldn’t have mentioned his own music; now XY is going to criticize it, and of course his opinion doesn’t mean anything, but Luka will still be annoyed. “Nah, I don’t believe that. Your music’s good.”

It’s certainly not the most glowing compliment Luka has ever received, and it’s delivered with a shrug—and yet, Luka finds his cheeks warming slightly at the comment. Maybe because he never expected XY to actually compliment someone besides himself.

“Have you…heard my music?” Luka asks.

“Just the one song you played on that broadcast. The one we tried to…” XY trails off, and Luka stares at the side of his head, silently demanding him to finish the sentence. “You know.” Frowning, XY tosses the TV remote onto the sofa where Fang was previously sitting. “At least my dad thought your music was good enough to use.”

Luka winces. “I’m sorry.”

The moment the words leave his mouth, he can’t believe he said them. Did he just tell XY that he feels sorry for him?

“Don’t be sorry that you’re good,” XY says. “He knows talent when he sees it, right?”

“But that’s—that’s stupid,” Luka says, taking a step toward the couch. XY doesn’t look up at him. “Your father should have encouraged your music, or helped you to make it better. He shouldn’t have just—” He growls. “I’m not a big fan of him, so of course I’m not surprised, but that’s still unfair.”

XY tilts his head toward Luka, though he still doesn’t quite make eye contact. “So you’re a fan of me, then?”

“No,” Luka says flatly.

XY nods, seeming unbothered. “Anyway, that’s cool. No one’s ever gotten mad for me. Well, my dad yells at people to make them do things for me, I guess. Does that count?”

Luka resists the urge to facepalm. The way XY says such spoiled things so casually—is this how Adrien feels, dealing with Chloé all the time? Then again, Adrien and Chloé are friends, and Luka and XY certainly aren’t.

Although, if Adrien can be friends with Chloé, does that mean Luka could befriend someone like…?

No. Luka refuses to consider it. He’s not getting involved with someone this rude and high-maintenance. People might think Luka has the patience of a saint, but in fact, he does not. And why would he take XY under his wing, after he and his father tried to screw over Kitty Section? XY’s personal issues aren’t Luka’s problem, and it’s certainly not his responsibility to nurture XY’s creative side.

Xavier-Yves Roth is young, Luka’s conscience says. Of course he makes mistakes. His brain isn’t fully developed yet.

Neither is mine, Luka thinks back. Which is probably why I’m even considering something this stupid.

“You know,” Luka says slowly. “If you…did write another song, and wanted to run it by someone…”

XY is silent for a moment, and then he finally looks up at Luka with a quizzical expression. “You? You’ve never sold albums or topped a chart. You wouldn’t have any useful feedback.”

Ah. Yes. This is why Luka wasn’t going to get involved with XY. Luka sympathized with XY for having his father tell him his offerings were worthless—and then XY turned around and said the same insensitive thing to Luka.

So what if Luka hasn’t topped the charts with an album full of banal, soulless songs? At least he makes music he’s passionate about.

It occurs to Luka that XY isn’t looking at him with scorn in his eyes. He just looks confused, which means he doesn’t even realize that what he just said was insulting.

Since Luka is feeling charitable—and XY’s words are meaningless—he decides to shrug off the comment. “I’m not interested in songs that sell,” Luka says. “I was just offering a second set of ears.”

“Oh.” XY blinks. “I don’t really see what’s in it for me…but, yeah, I guess it could be good practice for you. You know, learning how to work with someone in the industry.”

This is not worth it, Luka thinks. You will gain nothing from helping him.

Be a charitable person, his conscience insists. Do something good without expecting anything in return.

Luka snorts to himself. He’s already helped Ladybug and Chat Noir save Paris several times as Viperion. Isn’t that enough charity for the year?

“What’s so funny?” XY asks.

“Nothing,” Luka says. “I was thinking of something else. I’ll…keep your offer in mind.”

“Sure,” XY says, going back to his phone. “I’m not usually this generous, so, you know—it’s a special offer. I bet a lot of people would be jealous.”

Luka sighs. XY might not know much about music, but he’s certainly talented at infuriating people.

Before Luka manages to think of a response that doesn’t involve scathing sarcasm, there’s a loud knock on the door.

“Luka? XY? It’s Marinette!”

Luka rushes over to the door, checking his phone as he does. According to the Ladyblog, the akuma was defeated about a minute ago.

He opens the door and Marinette runs inside, panting. “Sorry, the, uh—the…”

“Macarons,” Luka supplies.

“Right! Yes,” Marinette says. “But then I got distracted, and, uh—there was an akuma, did you hear? Crazy! I mean, not crazy, because Paris has had a lot of akumas, but, you know…”

“I’m glad you’re back,” Luka says.

Marinette nods, then leans forward and whispers, “How was XY?”

Luka shrugs. “About what you’d expect.”

That feels a bit disingenuous, though. Because XY isn’t quite what Luka expected. Yes, his attitude is infuriating, and he oozes upper-class shallowness—but Luka’s starting to realize that there might be a reason that XY acts the way he does.

Not that Luka intends to stick around long enough to find out.

XY groans and stands. “I guess that lame rock star isn’t coming back for his dumb lizard. You two can watch him. I’m going downstairs to get food or something.”

He crosses the room and brushes past Luka and Marinette without a word. His eyes meet Luka’s as he leaves—and there it is, again, that look of almost wariness.

Then he shrugs and leaves, and Luka and Marinette are alone with a crocodile in a bathtub.

“Thanks for not feeding him to the crocodile,” Marinette says.

“Yeah, well.” Luka shrugs. “I didn’t want to give my favorite rock star’s pet indigestion.”

A second later, they hear a grunt and a crack, followed by a tidal-wave splash; and for the moment, at least, Luka’s thoughts of Xavier-Yves Roth are forgotten.

As abundant in a absurd new adventures cowritten with Greg Renoff, Templeman’s “halfway there” acknowledgment was in acknowledgment to guitarist Eddie Van Halen’s agitation about acid “You’re No Good,” for 1979 anthology “Van Halen II.” The song had aloof been abundantly covered. Linda Ronstadt fabricated a hit with her adventurous 1975 country-rock version. It was Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth’s abstraction to cut “You’

My name is Dennis.

I have been writing about a large group of people making my life miserable. It is the worst kept secret in america. I have paper notes written from about 15 yrs ago and the google site itself is around 10 yrs old. it is thousands of pages in text and includes audio notes and images as well as some video which is listed on youtube. there are slightly more than 400 or so different sites and the most recent sites are at monthly site addresses, ie may2019. the specific site of the most recent site is at https://sites.google.com/site/dwdelaneymay2019 and the first site is at https://sites.google.com/site/dwdelaney/ . I ve tried to get peoples attention with the site and had hoped it might make the people that are doing this to me to stop, it hasnt. lots of other sites, wordpress, flickr, tumblr, google photos, instagram.

I had mistakenly thought i could shame them into stopping. I cannot. please help me.

Ive tried everything i can think of. I cant get an acct on twitter or snapchat or some of the other sites because i dont have a phone. I dont have a phone because i dont have any money. Ive been as clear and loud as i can possibly be. What ive been saying, ive been saying for along time. From what i understand, the defs are using the addiction frame as an excuse to make me live like this. They know it isnt true. I know it isnt true. The defs believe it doesnt need to be true in order to justify doing this to me. Ive written on this a lot, and for along time. I dont have anything to add here thats new. Some things have changed, perhaps. Regardless i will say what ive been saying. The po - . they busted hard. They knew theyd lose all along. Car talk - theyre on tape - on they radio. Talking about hitting me with chem. Not therapy. Not medicine. They arent fooling anyone with that nonsense. The evidence was cringeworthy good. Now the defs wont abide by the judgement. Po wont enforce because they are a named party. They are on the front page of the court documents. On the defendant side. They cant even pretend to be impartial. They dont have to. You cant police the police if theres no one to enforce the judgement. Wheres those handcuffs nancy. This thing has been going way too long. Before the legal complaint, 15 yrs ago. Before the page was started 10 yrs ago. The doj has changed administrations and tried to sabotage my case by influencing my individual actions and my thought process itself. I am subject to involuntary communication, i believe, while i sleep. I think this is i am kept, not just homeless, but outdoors homeless. I have reason to believe these communications have been used to attempt to weaken my case and used in combination with other strategies i encounter in my waking hour. The cocaine on the trash bags, back when i was led to believe that buying my food would risk forfeiting my case. This was itself used to bolster the addiction frame. Its worth pointing out im not addicted to anything, including cocaine, when maybe i should be. The fact that im not is the strongest possible evidence against the defs - and their bogus addiction. I ought to be suing the rouge partisans at doj for trying to get me addicted. Like those people making money off the opioid addicts. The people doing this to are not average people. They are experts in psychology and pain. That means chemistry, pest control, medicine and chemical warfare. It is particularly troubling that i believe dod, po, dod po which is mp are involved. Basis of the claim - the original complaint mentioned the 1983 - due process and equal protection claims. I also plead a rico charge under a civil liability theory. In order to make this thing happen, the defs have recruited participants with the promise of a job, a promotion, overtime hours, or other such inducements. Conversely, those refusing to participate, or those that had been involved, but had decided to stop or speak out against the defs, have faced penalties in wages, hours etc. In particular, in order for this to continue, defs have directed these specific retaliatory measures toward witnesses for the government, the plaintiff, me, as well as those that might even consider such a position. The evidence for this is without question. These individuals have faced tangible losses in income, threatened with long term unemployment in their chosen field and have also endured significant social and peer pressure as well. Those defs that are employed in intelligence, either as analysts or within collection or any number of different technical specialties, were pressured to participate in, what was knowingly illegal activity, fucking with me, ie. identity theft, aggravated battery etc. They were forced to use gov authority to fuck with me. Sheriff disbanding DIRT, warrant teams

Sangamon County deputies whose primary roles involve rooting out drugs and searching for fugitives are being reassigned to patrol duty as the sheriff’s office struggles to plug a budget shortfall.

Sheriff Neil Williamson said Wednesday that, while he hopes the teams can be reformed in the future, it is unclear when that might happen. Next year’s budget already “is looking grim also,” he said.

Five deputies are affected by the change.

make up the sheriff’s Drug Investigative Response Team,

while deputies

Matt Lorton and

Jim Tapscott,

the sheriff’s warrant team, are on loan to the U.S.

Marshals’ fugitive task force.

All five will be back on the street effective July 20.

The sheriff’s office previously disbanded its crime prevention unit as part of its budget-cutting efforts. Williamson said he was asked to trim $850,000 from his budget because of the county’s “severe financial constraints.”

He called the warrant and drug teams “two of the most successful units we’ve had” and said disbanding them was one of the hardest decisions he’s had to make in his 15 years as sheriff. However, Williamson said, he is doing everything possible to avoid layoffs.

He also expressed concern that crime could escalate as a result of the cuts. The office will have to react more to crime now, rather than being able to take preventive steps.

“We are getting back to the basics of what a sheriff’s department is supposed to do,” he said.

The sheriff’s warrant team was formed in July 2000 and supplied two deputies to the U.S. Marshals’ fugitive task force. Since the warrant team was formed, more than 4,900 fugitives have been captured, Williamson said.

The team’s disbanding means the sheriff’s office no longer will have representatives on the fugitive task force.

The DIRT team was formed in July 2004 in response to what was at the time a growing methamphetamine problem in Sangamon County. The team made numerous meth-related arrests in its first two years, which Williamson said drastically curbed the local meth industry.

The DIRT team has made about 1,700 drug-related arrests since its inception.

First, note hall rumor of cocaine use. I’ve Never done cocaine in my life. Second, I was set up in san diego to make it look like I was involved in my brother’s drug use and sales. Afl-cio internship puts me in san diego, where only person I know is Delong. He is staying in an apartment where, I find out later, although not living there and rarely seen, the leaseholder is Pennell. I’m in san diego and Johnny comes out to san diego, where I find out he’s buying and selling cocaine. I tell him to stop and he ignores me. He gets busted. He goes to jail. I’ve been staying at kennedy house and working day labor after the last election when Johnny says he getting out on probation but he needs a California address before they let him out on probation. I don’t have near enough to get my own place and Johnny says I can use his account, which had, I think, a little less than two thousand dollars in it. I find the place on broadway, in the gaslamp, very cheap. By the time I pay first and last months rent and security deposit, I’ve taken out all but a couple hundred dollars. He’s pretty upset about this at the time. Anyway, I think the whole putting me in san diego with Johnny thing and then him getting busted in san diego while I’m there and then me needing a place for him was pre-planned. Somebody knew I would have to use johnny’s account to get a place and that this could be used to justify harassment by scso back in springfield. Even with that as an excuse, the officers on the DIRT squad still went way beyond the scope of their authority in using vehicle exhaust to prevent sleep and cause pain and were involved in getting pedophilia frame arranged.

In 2017, there were 41,344, incidents in Sangamon County where deputies either initiated a law enforcement service or were dispatched to a call.

There was a lot of movement in the operations division in 2017. In April, Will Brooks, Jordan Cox, and Ryan Kuntzi were hired as a Sangamon County Deputies. Deputy Brooks began the Field Training Program immediately due to prior law enforcement training, and Deputies Cox and Kuntzi began the Illinois State Police Recruit Class. Sergeant Andy Danes was transferred from second shift to the Investigations Division in August. Detective Nancy Finley was promoted to Sergeant and transferred to second shift. Deputy Travis Dalby was transferred from second shift to Crime Prevention in March. Deputy Andrew Brashear was transferred from first shift to the Investigations Division in November.

In June, Deputy Knox retired after 25 years of service. His humor and kindness will be missed.

Taylorville man launches run for state House seat

TAYLORVILLE -A 26-year-old Taylorville resident announced his bid for the state House of Representatives seat occupied by Democrat Rep. Gary Hannig of Benld. Rodney Davis , a Republican, is a Taylorville High School and Millikin University graduate. He said he wants to build careers in the 98th District -not just jobs. He plans on doing so by being a leader where there has been a “fundamental lack of leadership.” Davis noted that communities in the 98th District -which includes all or parts of Christian, Macoupin, Madison Montgomery and Shelby counties -have suffered economically. “I will work to put together a jobs and employment program: an economic development plan which will work to retain, as well as attract, businesses and economic growth, which our area needs to prosper,” he said. One of Davis’ top priorities, he said, is to advance Project 29. He said he is familiar with the death and destruction that has occurred on Illinois 29, a highway he drives every day to his job at the Secretary of State’s Office in Springfield. “I want to make sure the funding comes along for the next phases in a more timely manner,” he said. “I think there’s more bureaucracy going on than needs to be. “Being a part of the bureaucracy in Springfield has given me a bird’s eye view of what kinds of waste occur there,” Davis said. “We need leadership to fight it.” Davis has been a Republican precinct committeeman in Taylorville since 1991.

He served as regional director of the

Illinois Young Republicans

and now serves as the group’s statewide secretary.

His wife, Shannon, also is a longtime Taylorville resident.

SHIMKUS MAKES APPOINTMENTS TO ROUND OUT STAFF

Soon-to-be U.S. Rep. JOHN SHIMKUS' office staff is getting much of its manpower from a couple of sources -- Secretary of State GEORGE RYAN's office and the recent legislative campaign of RODNEY DAVIS . Shimkus, R-Collinsville, who will be sworn in Tuesday to a two-year term representing the 20th Congressional District, earlier named two ex-Ryan staffers -- CRAIG ROBERTS and BRAD CARLSON -- to be his Washington, D.C.-based chief of staff and Springfield-based deputy chief of staff, respectively. Roberts was campaign chairman for DAVIS, a Taylorville resident who lost to Democrat GARY HANNIG, D-Litchfield, in the 98th House District in November.

Davis himself will become the Springfield-based personnel director for Shimkus. His job will also include handling the office budget and doing constituent work, Roberts said. Davis' campaign manager was MATT JOHNSON, 24, of Springfield, who is leaving his job on Ryan's program staff to become a junior legislative assistant in Shimkus' Washington office. He's also the son of

BARRY JOHNSON, lobbyist for the Illinois Lumber & Material Dealers Association. Shimkus' Illinois press aide will be STEVE TOMASZEWSKI of Nashville, the Washington County GOP chairman, who has been working as an auditor for Ryan. Tomaszewski generally oversaw Shimkus campaign operations in Washington, Marion, Jefferson and Clinton counties, Roberts said, and his family owns the Nashville Times newspaper. Davis, Johnson and Tomaszewski will all make salaries in the mid-$30,000s, Roberts said. The Springfield office should be open within days at Sixth and Madison streets, Roberts said. Also working there will be MARY ELLEN MADONIA, 26, who was finance director for the Shimkus campaign. She'll become as a $33,000 district aide. "I took a big risk in working for John, but I believed in him," said Madonia, who left a Sangamon County job to join the campaign. "I'm just fortunate that the voters felt the same way." Madonia is daughter of Springfield City Treasurer JUDY MADONIA. Among other Shimkus employees:

DORA ROHAN of Collinsville, who has been Shimkus' secretary in his six years as Madison County treasurer, will run his Collinsville office;

STEVE MADDEN, a recent law school graduate from Springfield who volunteered on the Shimkus campaign, will be a junior legislative assistant in Washington;

MARY BALLARD, formerly with Modern Mailing Systems Inc. of Springfield, who handled Shimkus mailings, will be constituent coordinator for offices in Springfield and Collinsville and a part-time office in Centralia;

CHERYL CRATE, who has worked in Washington for U.S. Rep. TOM COBURN, R-Okla., will be Shimkus' legislative director, bringing with her experience on the staff of the Commerce Committee, where Shimkus will serve; and

DAN BLANKENBURG, who has been a junior legislative assistant to U.S. Rep. TOM EWING, R-Pontiac, will be a senior legislative assistant for Shimkus. Shimkus, meanwhile, will no longer be Madison County treasurer after today, and he's feeling a bit nostalgic about his six years in county office. He said he was "pretty depressed" working in an almost empty office, and noted that six years was the longest he's ever stayed at the same job. "I'm excited about the opportunities ahead of me, but I've fought some good battles here," he said. He's hoping that Democratic Madison County Board Chairman RUDY PAPA, a Democrat, will appoint the chief deputy in the treasurer's office, WES TUCKER, to the post.
