"In front of a darkened background, a young woman in a rural costume is sitting in the foreground of the picture, eating. The girl's gaze is not directed at the large clay pot in her left hand or at the fork with noodles on which she is blowing cooling air in her right hand, but is focused on nothing. It seems lost in thought. With the unanswered but looming question of the reason for the girl's thoughtfulness, the painter Johann Baptist Reiter (1813–1890) provides a narrative element in his work The Noodle Eater. Linking everyday actions with small stories was typical of painting in the Biedermeier era, especially in Vienna, where the oil painting was created in 1849."

Michel Van Cuyck - Beach of Oostende - ca 1866

Michel Thomas Antonius Van Cuyck (19 August 1797, Ostend - 10 May 1875, Ostend) was a Belgian painter, watercolorist and lithographer.

From 1811 to 1817, he studied at the Bruges Academy of Fine Arts . After graduating, he set up a studio in Oostende, but was forced to supplement his income by painting houses. In 1820, he and François-Antoine Bossuet co-founded the "School voor Teeken- en Bouwkunde" (School for drawing and architecture). They had several students who became well known, including Edgar Baes , Lionel Baes , François Musin and, especially, James Ensor. The latter, however, was not impressed by what he described as the "deceptive sponge and drawing technique of this dull, boring and stillborn business".

In 1827, a blue whale washed up on the beach near Ostend. Van Cuyck made a series of paintings, depicting it on the beach, and drawings of the dissection process, which accompanied an exhibition of the whale's skeleton. It was purchased by a local philanthropist named Herman Kessels who toured with it and Van Cuyck's drawings for almost four decades. Since 1865, it has been on display at the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg.

During the years following independence, King Leopold I transformed Oostende into a sort of Royal Residence, which developed into a fashionable seaside resort. Van Cuyck was one of the first to depict the tourism and the bathing culture there. His beach scenes and seascapes are now some of his most familiar works. He also painted Flemish fairs and landscapes, primarily in Walloon Brabant, in Biedermeier style. His portrayal of Queen Louise on her deathbed was reproduced as a lithograph.

He was the first in a long line of painters, which included his sons, Edouard-Johannes Van Cuyck (1828-1893) and Michel Thomas Séraphin Van Cuyck (1822-1890), as well as his grandsons, Michel-Julien Van Cuyck (1861-1930), Octavius-Ludovicus Van Cuyck [nl] (1870-1956) and Paul-Edouard-Alphonse Van Cuyck (1882-?).

Overview:

"The present lot is an archetypal interior of a school of painting which also included the artist's friends and contemporaries, the brothers-in-law Vilhelm Hammershøi and Peder Ilsted. All three artists were members of 'The Free Exhibitio' a modernist art society established in Copenhagen at the end of the 19th century.

Their art could be traced back via the Biedermeier interiors of their Danish Golden Age forebears, such as Wilhelm Eckersberg, all the way back to Dutch art of the 17th century, in particular the work of artists such as Johannes Vermeer.

All three artists typically drew inspiration from their own domestic surroundings, often including their spouses, represented as a solitary figure, almost invariably painted side-on or from behind, and meditatively involved in quiet pursuits such as reading.

Their homes are represented as sanctuaries, havens of peace far removed from the hustle and bustle of an outside world that is usually only hinted at by a shaft of light from a window which is often unseen.

However, whereas Hammershøi’s oeuvre was characterised by a combination of asceticism and Symbolism, typically depicting sparsely furnished interiors executed in a muted palette of greys and whites, Holsøe’s paintings stressed the material qualities and richness of his domestic surroundings." ― Find out more https://bit.ly/3xud8Eg | Source: Christie's, London

About the Artist:

In 1886, Holsøe made his debut at the Charlottenberg December exhibition with an interior scene, a subject for which he was to become renowned. Interior scenes, often sparsely furnished rooms were a feature of Danish painting in the latter part of the 19th Century.

Vilhelm Hammershoi (1864-1916) a contemporary of Holsøe was also a painter who specialised in such scenes, frequently, like Holsøe including a single, invariably, female figure. Holsøe achieves a defined space in these interiors through harmonious colours, subdued light and the careful juxtaposition of objects.

He was enormously popular throughout Scandinavia and the rest of Europe, receiving an honourable mention at the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1889 and a medal at the Munich Exhibition of 1891. His works can be found in museums in: Copenhagen and Munich.

August Canzi grew up in Baden near Vienna. He moved to Paris in 1833 where he studied under Jean-Dominique Ingres (1780–1867). Upon his return to Vienna in 1840 he became one of the best Austro-Hungarian Biedermeier portraits painters. Then he lived in Budapest from 1846 to his death in 1866. He exhibited for the first time at the Salon in 1833.

Orta sınıf bir ailenin oğlu olarak doğan Spitzweg, 1825-28 seneleri arasında eczacılık eğitimi almıştır.
