Nitiman — Normalizing reactions to queer relationships in BL

With that title, you're probably like "Rae, wth are you talking about?", but hear me out. The show is doing something really interesting in the way it's showcasing reactions to Bbomb and Jin's relationship. We're used to the very formulaic plot where the relationship is revealed and it's immediately met with disapproval/adversity which eventually leads to a break up (cue the Episode 11™️ curse) followed by an often half-baked reunion and happy ending. Nitiman is turning that formula on its head and it's honestly so refreshing.

It's implied that Jin has only dated girls in the past, but literally no one bats an eye when he and Bbomb start dating. They are now in relationship and all of the important people in their lives have started to find out, but nobody has made a big deal about it. Jin's sisters literally found Bbomb half naked in his bed and were just like "that's your friend, huh? 😏" and that was the end of it. In today's episode it was implied that Jin's mother may also know about their relationship and her response was to include Bbomb in the family picture.

What's the message here? Queer romantic relationships are just like heteroromantic relationships; they're both just about two people finding each other and falling in love.

P. S. It looks like Jin is going to tell Bbomb's mother about their relationship in next week's episode. I hope that she's able to understand and accept them as well.

This one gave me My Engineer vibes from the start, only with a better main couple, but much weaker side dishes. This is OLD school Thai uni BL. It felt like it was meant to come out in 2018 but I was grateful to get it in 2021. It went up against GMMTV’s FUTS without the same level of production or quality control and STILL knocked it out of the water (or sky, as it were).

Neither offering was strong on story but Nitiman had more redeemable and sympathetic characters, a great tsundere uke redemption arc, and a fantastic pining seme who yearned without bullying, grooming, or gaslighting his uke.

It was very much a university drama in that there were lovable surrounding friendship groups for both main characters with their own relationships, issues, and nosiness. I really like it when uni BL feels socially collegiate.

All that said, absolutely nothing happened in this BL. And I thought Oxygen lacked drama. I enjoyed it but it felt a bit just like really good vanilla ice cream, I was left rather scrabbling for the missing peach cobbler. In other words... was there a point? Do I care to eat vanilla ice cream for it’s own sake when I consider it the condiment of the dessert world? I honestly don’t have an answer.

You’re gonna have to watch it for yourself and decide if it’s you flavor.

Something might have happened between Jin and Bbomb because they tried to fall asleep in black and grey T-shirts, then Bbomb confessed that he was affected by their proximity, then they woke up in different clothes, and Jin had a hickey THEY REFUSED TO TALK ABOUT.

I really appreciate that they were both drunk, that Bbomb was even drugged, but they still didn't do anything. That Jin said no and Bbomb listened, even when he was drugged and horny and at least a little out of his mind.

But that still scared Jin. You can see his fear. He's not ready for this. He's still insecure in their relationship existing, let alone a more physical side to it.

And that insecurity fills him up and pours out into everything else Bbomb does, pours out into his jealousy and his worries because he's worried he can't do this, can't be enough, can't see all of this through and love Bbomb that way.

I love Nitiman because the relationships feel so honest and real and true.
