House of Leaves: I know I’m going to love this. I’ve read Borges’ “Labyrinths” and once I head that HoL shared Borges’ twisted shadow, I was in. The Navidson Report is expansive. I’m excited to get to the crazy bits. If I am nitpicking, I wish it was paced a bit faster. But I know that will ruin the unsettling, creeping terror Danielewski’s setting up.

Culpeper’s Color Herbal is reeeaaally cool. I picked it up at a flea market, during one of my “I need a new hobby” phases. After a few page flips in, I assumed it was going to be an index of plants and their geographical locations. I planned to take it on hikes to be the Nancy Drew of herbs. But it’s so much more! It was originally published in the early 17th century, when only two other herbal books circulated, both written in latin. Culpepper translated everything from latin to english, and aimed to create an index of herbs his patients could use as remedies. What’s interesting though, is the perspective the 17th century had on herbal medicine. Astrology was a devoted practice for many people living in this era, and Culpepper believed (like many others) that a plant’s healing powers were linked to the stars. The book is entirely based on the idea that each plant is ruled by astrological forces, and gives great detail of what those forces are for over 400 herbs. It reminds me how much we’ve come full circle, the resurgence of ayurvedic medicine in forms of herbs and holistic practices is much needed in our society today. Of course we’re no where near moving away from big pharma, but it’s a small step for Culpepper and I. Endymion: Interesting direction away from the first book in the Cantos, Hyperion. Starting with Keats’ story makes me wonder how long that story line will last. I’m really just curious to see who dies in the final battle at the treeeeee so hopefully these next 3 books ARE WORTH IT ! But I recommend reading Hyperion if you haven’t yet, it’s a most excellent sci-fi thriller :D Heidegger & A Hippo Walk Through Those Pearly Gates : 4th time re-reading. Easy, short read & great book for intro philosophy/ young readers. Still carries weight in a sense that you pull ideas from it, story themes, discovering each philosopher’s alignment with death and such. Might update more later, I got lazy. G’’’’’’night __’’’_

7. Annaprasan Sankara
