CRASH
Storm calls to be picked up and conversations are had
taglist:@skylordgrey
The high shrill sound of Moose's ringtone filled the room. It nearly midnight. Someone was calling him. It was nearly Midnight and someone was calling him. Moose blindly reached for his phone.
"Captain Wilson speaking." He groaned.
"Your Last name is Wilson?"
Moose sat bolt right up. "Storm! It's nearly Midnight, kid. Did something happen?"
They chuckled. It sounded nervous. “No, nothing happened. Though you will probably need to come pick me up.”
Moose pushed the blankets down and grabbed his boots. “Come pick you up? Storm, where exactly are you?”
They hummed as they seemed to think about their answer. “Uh, about two three miles from base? I was following the train tracks to clear my head and maybe lost track of time.”
Moose sighed. “Kid it is literally,” He glanced at the little clock in his room, “Twelve o’ two. Storm it is literally just after Midnight! How long have you been out there?”
A slight hum and shift of fabric against the phone speaker. “I don’t know. My last Clear memory is from around Eight or nine. Everything after that gets a little floaty and Fuzzy.”
Moose pinched the bridge of his nose. “Are you telling me, you had a dissociative episode and Don't know where you are?”
The sound of snapping fingers met his ears. “Yeah! I think that’s what happened.”
Moose breathed deep. “Okay, okay. Here’s what we’re going to do. You are going to start walking towards base and I’m going to meet you halfway. Then we are going to have a talk. Am I clear, Corporal?”
A moment and then they spoke. “Sir. Yes, Sir.”
Moose hung up and finished pulling his boots on before swiping his keys off the bedside table.
—
The parking lot was fucking cold. Moose shivered as he tugged open his truck and climbed into the cab.
“Fuck! Kid ya picked a good day to do this shit.” He turned the key in the ignition and the truck roared to life under him. He gunned it out of the little parking lot and right for the nearby rail yard. It was an end of line stop, so Storm would have had only one direction to walk in.
Moose muttered and cursed as he turned down the rail yards service road. An old cracked up road that was more potholes than actual asphalt. He drove slow and careful til he saw a distant figure walking through the mist. Fuck, if that ain't storm, he’s gonna bite his damn tongue. He pulled to a stop and rolled down the window, sticking his head out.
“STORM!” He hollered. He watched the figures head snap up before they began to jog towards him. He waited for them to get to the truck before popping the passenger door open. He got a good look at them as they scrambled into the passenger seat and buckled up. They looked tired. They didn’t meet his eyes as they settled into the seat. He took a deep breath.
“Storm.” They sluggishly raised their head to look at him. He took a moment to gather his thoughts.“Do you want to talk about it?”
Storm snorted. “Can we just go back to base, sir?” They sound just absolutely done with the day.
—
The drive back to base was quiet and warm. You were curled in the passenger seat, soaking up heat like a lazy cat. The radio was playing softly in the background, some country station.
Moose huffed for the umpteenth time as the truck rode over another pot hole.
You quietly hummed as you gathered your thoughts. “You know, I regret it sometimes.”
Moose didn’t look up from the road, “Regret what, kid?”
You leaned your head against the window, ignoring the buzzing in your head. “Leaving the 141.”
Moose hummed, “Why do you regret it?”
You blinked, trying to think. “I guess,” you stop trying to gather words. “I think I miss the action of it all.”
Moose cursed as the truck bumped another pothole. “The action of it all?”
You side eyed moose for a second. “The best of the best in the captain’s eyes, and sure we had support on some things but at the end of the day. It came down to the wire, ya know. At some point it always became a rush to survive and get the job done. And now, well now a days, it doesn’t feel like that anymore. Don’t get me wrong, Captain O’Neil and the rest of safe house six are wonderful and working with Taskforce Dante is helping but. But it doesn’t feel the same. I keep going round to the idea of maybe calling one of them but I know that I very likely burned that bridge when I left.”
Moose hummed as he drove the truck into the little parking lot near the Taskforce barracks. “Why did you leave in the first place? If you don’t mind me asking.”
You took a deep breath. “After the whole being kidnapped, tortured, and buried alive thing on Solomon’s island, I felt like that I was no longer a good fit for 141 operations. I didn’t know if I could handle the work they do with all the fresh trauma. So i spoke it over with Price and decided the best bet was to take a step back. I don’t think I even told anyone I was leaving outside of Price. Didn’t want to deal with all the well wishes when I could barely keep up with them anymore.”
Moose clicked his tongue, “We’ll circle round back to the first part of all that later. But right now, my advice is if you keep feeling like this, maybe reach out to them? Concerning statements aside, it sounds like you were really close and are now missing them.”
You shrugged as you unbuckled your seatbelt and slowly uncurled and stretched. “Maybe. Maybe. Thanks for this, moose. It it means a lot.”
Moose just chuckled as he switched the truck off, “No problem, kid.”
—
Gaz hummed as his phone flashed with an incoming call. He barely glanced at the number before swiping his thumb over the screen to answer the call. "Garrick speaking."
"Uh Hello Kyle." Gaz froze. it had been months since he had heard that voice.
"Avery?" Gaz wanted to ask a millions question. Where've you been? What you've done? Why did you leave?" That last question left a bitter taste in his mouth.
A light nervous laugh, so familiar and yet so damning.
"Yeah, yeah it's me gas man."
Gaz felt himself choke as a flash of anger curled in his gut. He drew in a sharp breath and decided maybe it'd best if he ripped the the band aid off quickly.
"Why did you leave us, Avery?" Gaz heard you suck in a sharp and quick breathe before releasing it in a sigh. He knew his tone was possibly sharper than he meant but the anger burning the back of his throat didn't care.
"Because I Couldn't handle it. Because after everything that happened on that cursed island, I felt like failure because I couldn't keep up and didn't immediately bounce back. Because I didn't know if I could handle Being the best of the best anymore." Gaz felt the anger rise in his throat before suddenly going out. He huffed a breath as he processed your words.
"You left without a word, Avery. Without a hug, or even so much as a basic explanation of why. We were worried. We've been worried. But it's good to hear your voice again. What have you been doing?" Gaz hummed as he slowly calmed down. Bitter anger shifting to steady calm as you spoke.
"I uh joined with a PMC, to uhm complete my medical training and that offered that I would be less on the front end of fights. Got demoted down to a corporal in their rank system, because Their sergeants have much more requirements. I uh made some friends, maybe you've heard of them? They're a group called Taskforce Dante. The PMC mostly works as support for various Taskforces. My squad uh specializes in evac and emergency medical response. Yes, we are a glorified ambulance crew, you can stop laughing now." Gaz's shoulder shook as he tried to swallow his laughter. To think you went from one of the best infiltration specialists to an ambulance crew member was certainly an interesting change.
The conversation continued after Gaz gained control his laughter. Both of you content to catch each other up. But all too soon, Gaz had to return to his duties.
"Hey, Avery."
"Yeah, Gaz man?"
"You mind if I tell the others you called?"
"I dont mind, Kyle. See ya soon mate."

Siblings
@divoha4
The last sounds of gurgling and growling died off as the duo killed the undead that surrounded them.
“Ugh. You never get used to the smell…”
”Uhm…Storm…?”
Storm looked over at Ferret, who looked suddenly pale and meek.
“Ferret? What is it?”
Ferret shakily showed their wrist. On their wrist, a clear as day bite, dripping with blood.
Storm didn’t hesitate. They took their clean knife out, and cut the wrist clean off, prompting a screech of pain from Ferret.
Storm apologised repeatedly as the wrapped the arm in a tourniquet and scraps of gauze.
“It hurts!” Ferret squeaked.
“I know. I’m sorry!” Storm repeated a few more times before taping up the gauze.
“Here.” Storm handed Ferret a small bottle of vodka, which the duo had grabbed from a downed plane. Ferret took it and chugged it instantly.
When Ferret discarded the bottle, they noticed Storm acting off. Their shoulder was in an upwards position, their neck slightly tilted to that side.
“Storm? Is something wrong…?” Ferret said in a shaky voice.
Storm hesitated. They let out a long breath before relaxing their shoulder, and moving their neck into an upright position. A deep bite was on their neck, like an undead had tried their best to rip the chunk out.
“S-Storm?”
“I don’t think anyone can cut this off…” Storm sighed, sitting on the ground.
“M-Maybe we could cut around it?” Ferret stammered, but Storm shook their head.
“Already in my blood stream, Fer. I’m done.”
“No! We told Moose we’d make it back safe!” Ferret protested, shaking Storms shoulders.
“And I told him I’d keep you safe.” Storm replied.
Ferret’s shoulders slumped, their eyes filled with Grief and despair. “W-What do we do…?”
“I’m going to get you as close to home as I can. I wanna see familiar places before, well…yeah.”
Ferret let out a whimper, which prompted Storm to tightly hug them.
“Hey. You’re gonna need a hand getting home anyway.”
“Not the puns…” Ferret whimpered.
“Could always say I’m armed.” Storm snickered.
The walk back was slow for them both, due to Storms bite, and Ferrets missing arm, which sometimes sent shocks of pain through them.
“How’s it feeling…?” Storm ask raspily. They had steadily grown weaker during the walk.
“Hurts sometimes.” Ferret admitted “Healing is probably going to be a bitch…”
They then took a breath. “What about you?”
Storm hesitated. “My necks gone a bit numb. Kinda like when a limb falls asleep? But I can feel it pulsing, like a heartbeat. I won’t lie, it’s an interesting experience.”
”That’s…one way to put it…” Ferret mumbled.
Suddenly, Storm stumbled, and Ferret immediately put out their good arm to catch them.
“If you need to take a break…”
“No. We keep going.” Storm insisted.
Ferret lowered their gaze and nodded.
They walked for another two hours, before eventually, Storm fell, and struggled to get back up. Ferret helped them up, and guided them to a tree, that had all of its leaves still despite the coming winter.
“Man, I did not think I was gonna go out like this…” Storm croaked as they were set down against the tree trunk.
“W-What do I do…?” Ferret asked with a small whimper.
Storm nodded to Ferrets gun.
“W-What?! I-I can’t!” Ferret fretted.
“You have to. I ain’t walking around with those things, causing issues. I prefer doing that when I’m alive.”
“You’re my sibling. I can’t…” Ferret’s voice cracked.
“You have to because you’re my sibling, Jo.” Storm replied quietly.
“What am I going to tell Moose? Bes even?” Ferret asked quietly.
“The truth. That my luck ran out, and you gave me the easy way out. Beats all the Lumi crap, I won’t lie.”
Ferret whimpered, and gave Storm a tight hug, hesitant to let go.
“I-I’m going to miss you…” Ferret whispered pitifully.
“Yeah, I’ll miss you too, Ferret.” Storm responded softly.
Ferret withdrew from the hug after a few minutes, and only now noticed just how exhausted Storm looked. They looked pale, dark marks under their eyes.
“Just…make it quick, yeah? Seen too many people miss during their killing blow. Not fun.”
Ferret took out their pistol and took a shaky breath.
Storm gave them a weak smile. “Tell them I wasn’t scared. Not one bit.”
“I will” Ferret whimpered. They aimed the gun and looked away.
A shot fired, and then silence.
“You sure Soap and Ghost would want to go to the warehouse? It’s full of rats, and Soap squealed like a little girl.”
“Moose, you and I both know they’re the quickest we have right now for the Warehouse run.”
Moose sighed, and looked around. “Those two kids should be back by now.. Where’d you send them anyway, Bes?”
Bes hummed for a moment. “Hardware store. We needed some supplies for the walls.”
Moose grunted and looked back at the map, before they heard a familiar screech of the gate opening.
“Must be them.” Bes smiled before turning around. His smile faltered.
Ferret stumbled to them, their head hanging low. In their remaining hand, was what looked to be a collar, part of it frayed and stained darker.
Moose turned, and his eyes widened. “Jo!”
He ran to Ferret, who was trembling like a leaf in the wind.
“Where’s Storm?!” Bes demanded.
Ferret could barely meet their gaze. When they finally lifted their head, there were tears in Ferret’s eyes. Shakily, they gave Bes the collar.
“They…” Ferret croaked.
Bes saw the blood, the frayed fabric on the collar, and his heart sunk.
Moose saw the collar, and his eyes widened.
All Bes could ask is “How…?”
Ferret let out a whimper, unable to answer.
Moose knelt down and tightly hugged Ferret, who let out one last whimper before sobbing into the older mans shoulder. “I’m sorry!” Ferret wailed.
Bes watched the two. He noticed Ferret’s stumped arm, and slowly began to piece it together.
“They saved you?”
Ferret meekly nodded. They forced themself to look up at Bes, and saw no anger. Only grief.
They were one member down, and that member, was family.

EVENT : emergency lockdown
With the island still under attack, all civilians (students, faculty, and island residents) have been assigned a location on the island to shelter in. Location assignments have been sent to each phone. Characters receive only their own assignments, not the entire list.
Most guards have been summoned to fight the attackers; a handful of NPC guards have been assigned to find and deliver lost civilians to their assigned shelters; all player character guards have received orders to collect supplies from designated emergency locations and proceed to an assigned shelter to protect civilians. Guards assigned to the shelters have a list of all civilians assigned to their shelter and are expected to check each of them off on arrival.
Another explosion has left half of the dormitory building collapsed, and the other half quickly following. Characters may have been in the building when it collapsed, and escape plots/injury plots are allowed!
The island is under attack by Delphine Delecaille. While the protections were down, Delphine and many of her people made it onto the island. Among the attackers is a massive purple dragon--characters may witness the dragon flying over the island, breathing fire, but should not come up against it. They may, however, encounter as many NPC attackers of various species as you please on their way to their shelter. Characters can fight and kill NPC attackers without consulting the main and without fear of consequences!
Speaking of journeys to their shelters, your character may take any roundabout journey you like to arrive there, so long as they do, eventually, arrive there. Late arrivals are allowed. Characters may spend up to two (2) days outside of the shelter. After they arrive at the shelter, they will not be allowed out, though characters with teleportation will not be bound.
Characters will not be allowed into shelters they are not assigned to, even in the name of staying with their loved ones assigned there.
While the island is under attack, cell phones on the island are misbehaving. Texts and calls are failing 9 out of 10 times.
The protective spells have been restored, but the binding spell in particular is acting up. Bound slaves may find they have access to their powers in short spurts of up to ten or fifteen minutes at a time.
Keep your eyes peeled for plot drops throughout the event!

The GH spoilers recap for Friday, July 1, 2022, features Sasha Gilmore Corbin getting some pills from her photographer ‘friend’ and things only got worse from there.
GH Spoilers Recap Highlights
After Felty (Brian Norris) got Sasha some pills that didn’t even seem recognizable to her, she promised him that backstage press pass and made her way over to the Deception office. When Maxie Jones (Kristen Storms) and Lucy Coe (Lynn Herring) told her the script for her TV appearance segment was changing, she freaked out and popped a pill when nobody was watching.
As Maxie and Lucy put pressure on her by reassuring her how great she is and how she would show the world that on TV, Sasha freaked out some more. After she composed herself, Maxie and Lucy left and Sasha popped one more pill before joining them on their trek to the station. Uh-oh.
General Hospital Recap: Brook Lynn Turned To Sonny
With Harrison Chase (Josh Swickard) lamenting his latest PCPD suspension status to Gregory Chase (Gregory Harrison) and Hamilton Finn (Michael Easton), Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton) took it upon himself to ask Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) to have a talk with Linc Brown (Dan Buran). Sonny told her if the word got out on the street, people would think Chase was a crooked cop. However, he can use his influence with the civilian review board.
At the Metro Court Gardens, Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright) lamented her own problems to Olivia Quartermaine (Lisa LoCicero). She turned down Olivia’s offer to use Ned Quartermaine’s (Wally Kurth) money to buy Carly’s half of the hotel from the hedge fund, but when Sonny showed up, Olivia suggested she ask him for the money.
GH Spoilers Recap: All About Esme
As Nikolas Cassadine (Marcus Coloma) and Ava Jerome (Maura West) discussed their odd divorce with Scott Baldwin (Kin Shriner), Esme Prince (Avery Kristen Pohl) showed up and feigned shock at all of this, asking Nikolas if he told Ava everything. She then covered and said she knew that Nikolas was thinking of a separation.
When Esme got Nikolas alone, she kinda-sorta insinuated she would maybe tell Ava the truth, so Nikolas agreed to help her get her internship back at Spring Ridge. When Nikolas returned to the table, Ava decide she didn’t want to rush the divorce.
At Kelly’s, Spencer Cassadine (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) told Cameron Webber (William Lipton) that Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy) had found Esme’s real mother and Cameron believed him. Spencer then admitted if Cameron fell for it, so would Esme. He wants to offer her the ‘truth’ while getting her to confess what she did to Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali).
Spener also wanted Cameron to help him get a hold of Carly and Josslyn Jacks’s (Eden McCoy) DNA so he would have mother-daughter DNA to make this trick look authentic. As they put their plan into action, Esme showed up at the Metro Court pool and wondered what was going on.

Chapter 4
Description: You accompany your friends on a day trip to Animal Kingdom Theme Park where you meet Scott Evans by chance. This one afternoon leads to a year long friendship with both Chris and Scott over text messages and phone calls.
Pairing: Chris Evans x Reader
Warning: Cursing, drinking, and drunk texting.
A/N: Italics are internal thoughts.
Chapter 3
“Where do you want to eat?” Brooks asked once the two of you reached a strip of fast food and casual eateries.
Both of you left the office in search of a late lunch. In actuality, Brooks surprised you in the parking lot when you pulled in. You had just eaten breakfast two hours prior, but hey, if he was paying, you were going.
“Champs is always good,” you said.
Brooks hummed in reply, but kept walking past the entrance, leaving you standing there puzzled.
“Okaaaaay,” you said as you jogged to catch up. “What’s up with you?”
“Nothing,” he said with a shrug of his shoulders.
“Okay. Sure. We’ll go with that,” you replied.
When you passed the fifth restaurant, you quickly walked ahead, grabbing the door for Panera Bread and holding it open for him. “In! Now!”
He chucked, shook his head, and walked in, you following behind.
With a large, apple and chicken salad in front of you, as well as large hunk of bread, you decided to let the two of you eat in peace before the interrogation began.
“Do you really need three packets of butter for that piece of bread?” he questioned.
You pointed the plastic butter knife at him. “It’s rude to talk with your mouth full. And yes, this is a lot of bread, so it deserves a proportionate amount of butter. Bread and butter give me life. Don’t hate,” you replied, tearing a chunk off.
He closed his mouth, chewing a large bite of his sandwich but giving you a large closed lipped smile.
After your stomach was overstuffed by the bread you insisted on eating, you took a large sip of water, eyeing Brooks who now had his phone in hand.
“You and Jana are too much alike. Always so serious on your damn phones,” you said. Pushing your cup away because you were just too full for even water.
“One to talk. I hear you are mighty chatty with those…Evans guys,” he whispers at the end causing you to roll your eyes.
“They’re both friends,” you reply, shrugging your shoulders.
“Not with Chris from what I hear,” he said, the smugness thick.
You bite out a laugh. “From what you hear. You mean Jana? That’s your big scoop? You’re such a punk.”
“I’m just sayin’ that it all sounds flirty to me.”
“Remind me to not tell Jana anything anymore,” you said.
He gives you a half smile, but says nothing else.
“It’s not like that. He’s Brish Mevins.” Brooks chuckles at the fake name you gave Chris. “Have you seen the girls he’s dated?”
Brooks shakes his head no, but picks up his phone and starts typing away. You put your hand over it, forcing it down.
“Neither have I, and I want to keep it that way. But I’m sure they’re gorgeous and probably all actresses. Besides, sometimes people just flirt. I do it too. It’s fun,” you replied.
“Think what you will, but be open to it,” Brooks says, taking his finger and tapping your nose.
“Dorks. That’s the only types of people I know.” Brooks scrunches up his face and gives you a smile. “Any way. Tell me what’s up and don’t say it’s nothing.”
He lets out a long breath but sits up straighter, his face instantly changing to one that’s excited. “I got a job offer,” he exclaims.
“A different one at the paper?” you asked.
He shakes his head no. “It’s with an online news organization. It’s still a sales position, but it’s better pay and I can work from anywhere.”
“Don’t leave me there by myself,” you pout. “You can’t buy me lunch if you’re at home.” Bottom lip sticking out.
“You’re hardly there by yourself. How often have I come to your desk and your busy chatting with the women around you?” he asked.
While you are extremely happy for your friend, damn, are you going to miss seeing him every day.
“Not the same.” You take a big breath in. “But I want the best for you. So, if you’re happy, I’ll be happy. The Cole family is certainly moving up. You with this new job and Jana making partner.”
Brooks throws a hand up. “Don’t jinx it. Nothing’s been announced yet.”
You copy his stance, adding your second hand in. “Fine. Fine. But it’s going to happen.”
It’s media day at Walt Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The second attraction, Rise of the Resistance in Galaxy’s Edge is opening and you are quite excited. You hadn’t always loved the Star Wars franchise, not getting into the movies until your early twenties thanks to an old boyfriend who was pretty obsessed. This ride is supposed to be a huge deal and with very little revealed to the public thus far, you’re stoked.
There’s a big presentation by CEO Robert Iger with some surprise guests. Storm Troopers are roaming the currently empty stage while various members of the media prepare to go live once the presentation starts. A borrowed camera with a zoom lens from the paper rests in your hand. You also have your digital voice recorder ready to go. It would be easier to film the event and take stills from the video, but with a good number of YouTubers making up the event, you can always catch what you missed later that night.
Robert Iger walks on the stage while small pyrotechnics fire off from the back. Cheers all around. The buzz in the air is catchy and you find yourself fangirling more than anything. The special guests end up being Daisy Ridley and John Boyega as both actors play a part in the ride.
You’re given a return time to ride the attraction that day. Seeing that you have about an hour until your time slot, you peruse the shops selling various themed wares. Even the bottles of Coke products are themed to match the land. You purchase an orbed shape bottle of Sprite and snap a selfie sending it off to Scott.
Scott: Sprite? You’re in Star Wars land and you get soda. Where’s the blue milk?
You laugh at his reply.
Y/N: Star Wars land? It’s called Galaxy’s Edge Grumpy.
Y/N: Have you tried the blue milk? I’ll stick with the pop thank you very much.
Scott: Pop?! What the fuck is pop?
Scott: How long have you lived in Florida. The word you’re looking for is soda.
Y/N: Whatever 🙄
You snuck a selfie with a Storm Trooper and sent it to Chris. A few minutes later he was calling you.
“Hey babe,” you answered.
Yeah, your friendship had taken on another nickname. He called you sweetheart and you called him babe. The first time you said it to him you cringed. Like full body folded in half while you waited for a reaction. You didn’t mean to say it, but Chris took to calling you almost daily. He had a long break in his schedule and you had become part of his day. One day the word just slipped out. It felt natural. When he went on as if nothing happened, you relaxed. The nickname slipped out more and more as if that were his name.
“You’re killing me sweetheart! Are you there for the paper?” he asked.
“Yeah. Story will post tomorrow if you want to read it. I’m about to go on Rise of the Resistance in a few minutes.”
“Of course, I want to read it. Send me the link tomorrow. Gah! I’m jealous,” he whined.
You let out a giggle. “Get your butt to Orlando then. If you can’t swing the cost of a hotel, you can stay with me,” you replied.
“Uh-huh, okay, Sassy. I’ll let you know. Go enjoy your day smartass,” he said.
“You wouldn’t put up with me if you didn’t like it,” you teased.
“Need to stop talking to Scott. Apparently, he’s a bad influence on you,” Chris said.
“Oh, I don’t doubt that. But I’m going to head over to the line. I’ll call you later babe,” you said.
“Sounds good sweetheart. Bye,” Chris said ending the call.
Rise of the Resistance was not only visually stunning, but action packed. There were so many details that no doubt you could ride ten additional times and still not catch them all. The Sentinel was lucky to have a Disney enthusiast such as yourself on staff. Whenever there was a Disney Parks story needed, they knew yours would trump the competition. While you knew you were good at your job, you were also your worst critic and struggled to really put yourself out there. This is why you mainly worked on assignment with only writing a story of your choosing from time to time.
On your way out of the park, you purchased a Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bar. You took a bite out of one of the ears and snapped a selfie. The picture was quickly sent to Chris since he asked you to mail one to him a month again.
Y/N: I was going to mail this but he just looked so damn tempting.
Chris: I may not talk to you for a while. I think you understand why.
Y/N: I refuse to believe that. I’ll call you later.
Chris: We’ll see
What a baby.
It was Christmas Eve and you were freezing cold in your mom’s house. The heat was on, but she liked to keep the thermostat set to sixty eight to keep the gas bill low. Living in Florida for fifteen years had thinned your blood. The one positive about being back in Minnesota in the winter besides seeing your family, were the cute winter clothes you could wear again. Despite the warmer temperatures all year round in Central Florida, clothing stores still sold tall boots and thick sweaters.
Dressed in a large cream cowl neck sweater, dark blue jeans, and fuzzy red and white stripped socks, you were still freezing. You pulled the green throw blanket up to your neck, wishing someone would hold your mug of hot cocoa spiked with Baileys up to your lips so you wouldn’t have to remove your hands from under your blanket.
“When did you turn into such a baby?” Heath, your younger brother asked.
Like a true baby, you stuck your tongue out at him. He smirked but shook his head at you before sitting down next to you on the couch. Your mom and her sisters are in the kitchen, fussing with dinner, but mostly drinking wine. The “kids” who are all in their late twenties and thirties include your cousins Jenny, Rebecca, Tony, and Nick and his wife Avery, as well as yourself and Heath.
You brother reaches forward and grabs your mug off the coffee table, taking a sip before passing it to you.
“This is weak,” he said.
“Not all of us need a splash of cocoa in our Baileys,” you replied.
“When’s the last time we all got drunk together?” Jenny asked.
“Not since Nick’s wedding and that was like ten years ago,” Rebecca replies.
“Count us out, we got the kids watching TV in basement and need to get home tonight,” Avery said.
Nick frowns causing you to chuckle.
“I’m game, but I don’t want to get Baileys drunk. What else do we have?” you asked.
Heath got up and walked into the kitchen, politely smiling at your mother before opening a cabinet. It was taking some effort as he was trying to reach the back of the cupboard. A few seconds later he walked back into the living room with his hands behind his back. Like a magician unveiling his trick, he pulls the bottle from behind his back.
The group of you oohs at the green bottle of Jägermeister.
“We’re going to be so sick,” Rebecca said.
“On Christmas,” you add. “Why does mom have a bottle of Jägermeister?
Fuck. Mom is going to be so mad at us.
“It’s mine from like five years ago. I left it here and forgot all about it,” Heath chuckles.
“Do we have shot glasses?” Jenny asked.
“Doubt it,” Heath said.
“But we do have Dixie cups in the bathroom.” Tony said, getting up from his seat and moving into the bathroom.
Heath grabbed his phone and hit play on his nineties music playlist. It may be Christmas Eve, but this was really a get together with your family since you mainly only came home once a year. Even then, not everyone was able to get together every year.
With your first shot in hand, you snap a selfie. Best to do it now before I start to get sloppy.
Downing the shot with your brother and cousins, you grab your phone to fire off a text, attaching the picture to send Chris and then to Scott.
Y/N: Cheers to a Merry Christmas
Scott’s the first to reply as you finish your second shot.
Scott: Someone’s getting holly and jolly
You giggled at that causing your family to all send you a questioning look.
“These shots are already going straight to my head,” you said quickly.
“Drinking game!” Heath shouts. “Since we know the Christmas Story is on TV, anytime someone says Ralphie, we drink.”
“We are so getting wasted tonight,” Tony said.
“Mom,” you called out. She walked from the kitchen into the living room where you all were. “I think everyone but Nick and Avery are staying over.”
“You kids,” she sighs as she shakes her head walking away.
Your phone buzzed in your hand. Chris had responded to your text.
Chris: God you’re adorable.
Butterflies swarmed in your stomach with heat instantly rising to your cheeks. You hoped the alcohol you consumed was a good enough cover for the redness you were no doubt showing.
Your phone started to buzz in your hand repeatedly. You were so lost in your thoughts, you almost missed the call entirely.
“Hello?” you answered.
“Merry Christmas sweetheart.” Chris said. His voice was a little rough, making you shiver.
“Hi Ba-Chris,” you said, almost slipping out the nickname in front of your family. Getting up quickly, you moved to your old bedroom for privacy.
“How’s your Christmas so far?” he asked.
“Really good. It’s like the first Christmas in maybe five years where all my cousins on my mom’s side could come,” you said. “We’re having a really good time.”
He chuckled. “I can see that. How many paper cups of alcohol have you had?”
“Only two. Probably a lot more to come,” you replied. “Besides, it’s warming me up. It’s like I get amnesia about the weather.”
“I bet. Too much sunshine. It’s cold here too,” Chris said.
“Are you and Scott in Boston?” you asked.
“Yep, for like the last week. Probably be here another couple of weeks. You should come to Boston,”
What?
You cleared your throat. “Like now?” you asked.
Chris chuckled again. Damn, if that laugh didn’t get you every time.
“Like in general.” He pauses for a moment. “You should come out sometime. Scott’s here a lot. I’m here a lot. It would be fun. Give ya the whole New England experience,” he said.
“You know, it’s cold in Massachusetts,” you chuckled out.
“It’s a good thing you look so cute in sweaters,” he said, seriousness in his voice.
Okay fine. I like Chris. I like him, like him. Fuck.
You’re rendered speechless. Yes, he’s flirty every once in a while, via text message, but hearing it over the phone is something else. It’s almost not fair that he can say those things but be a thousand miles away most days.
“Hello? Did I lose you sweetheart?” Chris asked.
“Sor…sorry. Yeah, I’ll think about it,” you stammered.
“Come in the fall. It’s beautiful in the fall and not too cold for you.”
“Okay. Yeah. We’ll work it out,” you replied.
“I’m holding you to it.” Chris said.
“Y/N? Where’d you go?” Rebecca called from the other room.
“Hey, Chris. I’m being summoned in the next room. M’sure I’m a few drinks behind by now,” you replied.
“Okay, sweetheart. Go have fun with your family,” he said.
“You too, babe. Merry Christmas,”
“Merry Christmas,” he replied.
You were indeed late to the party as everyone was plenty tipsy by the time you walked back into the living room. Tony handing you a full paper cup before you could even sit down.
An hour later you had given up on drinking. You were at the point where you were just tipsy enough with zero percent chance of getting sick and that was plenty. You had a feeling your mom would be waking everyone up bright and early tomorrow.
You picked up your phone and sent Chris a text. Because having your phone while drunk was a great idea.
Y/N: We all want something beautiful
Man, I wish I was beautiful
The two of you had a habit of sending song lyrics back and forth to each other. Since the nineties station was still playing on Heath’s phone, Mr. Jones seemed appropriate. And maybe the booze made you brave since the words had hidden meaning to your crush on Chris.
Chris: A little Counting Crows on Christmas?
Y/N: Why not? Sometimes Christmas makes you nostalgic for the 90s.
“One more shot. Come on. Just one more. You’re never home to get drunk with me anymore.” Heath sniggered.
“You are a bad influence on me,” you teased, poking him in his chest. “Fine. One more and that’s it.”
One more turned into three more and you were suddenly sloppy drunk. You said goodnight to everyone, after throwing them extra blankets and pillows you scrounged up from your bedroom.
Alone in your room, you couldn’t get your mind off of Chris. After calling you cute and inviting you to Boston, not to mention the flirty texts, it was all too much.
Y/N: I think yur so cutte
Y/N: so nice n sweet
Y/N: just derseve everything you evr want
Y/N: wish yo not so far away
Predictive text doesn’t catch everything apparently, but you’re pretty sure he would get what you were saying. Before you could type another devotion to Chris, your phone rang, causing you to drop it on your head.
“Motherfucker!” you exclaimed, rubbing your aching head.
The phone continued to ring regardless of your pain.
“Hello?” you groaned.
“So, I’m going to take a shot in the dark here and say that you are trying to text my brother.” Scott said.
“Scott! Hi! I miss you!”
He chuckled. “Yeah, Yeah. Miss you too Sassy. Sounds like someone’s a little drunk.”
You giggled. “You’re a little drunk!”
“Oh my god. I should be recording this call.” He murmured.
You laughed because that’s what you did when you drank. You weren’t sure why you were laughing, but Scott always put you in a good mood.
“Anyway. I’m going to call you tomorrow because you probably won’t remember this. I need you to put your phone away and go to sleep. Those text messages you thought you were sending to Chris, you actually sent to me,” he said.
You frowned, sticking out your bottom lip. “Can you show Chris? He needs to know,” you whined.
“We’ll talk about it tomorrow sweetie. Now get some rest. Goodnight,” Scott said.
“Night Scott.”
The next morning you groaned to the sounds of your mother banging pots and pans. You were pretty sure she was doing it on purpose. With every bang, it felt like your head was going to crack open. Taking a pillow from under your head, you put it over your face and prayed that you could fall back to sleep. But then you remembered something about telling Chris he was cute.
Oh no! He’s going to think I’m some sad, desperate girl.
You grabbed your phone, praying Chris didn’t reply. Maybe he’d ignore it and save you the embarrassment. But then you remembered Scott calling you.
“Thank god for Scott,” you mumbled.
Typing out a quick reply to Scott since he would now be considered your saving grace.
Y/N: Thank you for saving me from myself.
Scott: No problem Sassy. How are you feeling?
Y/N: Like death. Not drinking again, probably for years.
Scott: So dramatic.
Y/N: Merry Christmas Grumpy.
Scott: Merry Christmas Sassy.
You plugged your nearly dead phone in to charge and regrettably got out of bed since your mom continued to make way too much noise at nine in the morning. You took a shower, hoping it would make you feel more alive. Sadly, it did not.
After eating breakfast which consisted of pancakes since your mom took a little mercy on you, you crawled back into bed. Christmas dinner was being served at five, so you grabbed your phone to set an alarm for an or two, because you knew you would over sleep. As soon as you picked it up, you saw you had a text from Chris.
Chris: Merry Christmas sweetheart.
Chris Evans was going to be the death of you.

Impressions
Rainbow operator, Jordan “Thermite” Trace, making some observations about the strangers on his base
Taglist: @skylordgrey
“I can’t preach to the darkness without putting up a fight.” Daniel plucked the baseline of the song as Avery filled the melody and Joseph played the points in between. All three voices singing in low harmony.
They were enjoying a bit of downtime after their most recent mission. Staying for a few days on Hereford base in England before returning to their joint base in New York.
“And I don’t expect a savior so I’ve got to be the light!” All three were unaware of the eyes on their back as they sat a little ways outside the training fields.
—
Jordan didn’t really know what to think of the little group of three currently sitting just in the shadow of the fence separating the training fields from the rest of the base. Apparently they were just making a quick pit stop before heading home.
Daniel “Moose” Wilson seemed to be the one in charge of the ragtag group. At least from what jordan had seen so far. He was the one to pull the other two away from getting themselves into too much trouble. And more than once, Jordan had seen the man literally yank the other two from some of the more dangerous tech on Hereford with a rather sharp, ”Don’t.” Though there was a wild edge to the man too. Jordan had observed the little group sparring one day, and well moose certainly held his own, against the other two at the same time. He had talked to the man a grand total of once so far. The man was polite but certainly to the point. Jordan could certainly appreciate that. The man had left him with a rather neutral impression but Jordan was okay with that.
Joseph “Ferret” Payne and Avery "Storm" Scott were never seen far from each other. Enough so that Jordan had honestly thought it was similar case to Elżbieta and Zofia. The two generally brought chaos along with them where ever they so happened to wander, though a few of the more engineering inclined at Hereford didn't seem to mind them too much. Something about a wrench and a box of scrap. Though some where less inclined to welcome the chaos that the two dragged with them. That's usually when Captain Wilson would get involved. Jordan had witnessed to two spar on numerous occasions. They could constantly be found on the training mats or in the obstacle courses trying to one up each other. They rarely took the offers of others fighting them, though they took the advice pretty decently. Jordan had tried to talk to them on more than one occasion just to get a feel for them, personality wise but was near always met with either polite but strained conversation or complete silence. The two very much left the impression of hiding something but they weren't his operators so he simply let it be.

Moving On - Zombie AU
Chapter 2: Brush with Death
Characters:
Avery "Storm" Scott (Owned by Divoha)
Daniel "Moose" Wilson
Monica "Cotton" Garcia-Wilson
After Storm's death, the group has to figure out what to do
Mentions of Death, Suicide and Self Harm
This chapter contains attempted suicide.
Really big thanks to @divoha4 for the writing of the sequence between Moose and Storm! (Really struggled with it ;u;)
Cotton was worried. About Bes, Moose, and the situation in general.
It had now been three weeks since Storm’s passing, and the pair’s depression had not lifted at all.
She tried to be there for them both, since Ferret had a healthy sibling network with herself, Hurricane, and a few others. But with Bes and Moose, it’s harder. They only have a few people they can fall back on, so Cotton took extra steps to make sure they were all right.
But what she didn’t count on was how deep Moose’s depression had gotten. If she had known, she would have stopped the events that followed.
Moose had woken up late that day. His head hurt, and the usual pang of grief in his chest appeared. He let out a quiet sigh and sat up, rubbing his face to try and get himself more awake.
He did his usual routine before heading to the infirmary for his check-up. Cotton was doing it today, and was gentle about it. She left momentarily, and that’s when he spotted it. Cotton’s pistol. He glanced around, before picking it up, and hiding it on his person.
Cotton finished the check-up, and still kept him on limited duties, to his annoyance. He just wanted to work, though he didn’t dare voice his complaints, knowing damn well it’ll be relayed back to Merc and he’ll be grounded fully again.
He quietly made his way back to his room and shut the door. Moose gazed around the room before sitting on the edge of his bed, and pulling the gun out, turning it in his hand, and then checking the ammunition slot. Two bullets. One was enough for him.
But then, he hesitated, thinking of how the kids would react, how the others would think of him. Would they call him a coward for giving up? Would the kids be sent into the same downwards spiral he was pushed into?
But one thing was certain. He couldn’t keep going any more. Everyday it’s a struggle to even get out of bed, let alone eat food, socialize, or do the odd jobs to keep the base from being over-run with the undead.
He closed his eyes and pushed the barrel against his head. As he pulled the trigger, the gun slipped, but wherever it hit, darkness enveloped his vision. He didn’t know what was happening, until the cold set in, and then nothing.
When he next opened his eyes, honestly, he expected the depths of hell. Not Storm standing before him with such a disappointed look.
“Storm…?”
Storm instantly punched him.
“Ow! What the hell?!”
“You’re a dumbass, Moose!” Storm raised their voice. “What the hell were you thinking?!”
Moose didn’t get a chance to answer, because Storm then punched his shoulder.
“You’re an idiot! What are Cotton, Ferret and Hurricane gonna do, huh?!”
“I don’t know, all right?!” Moose retorted back sharply. “I couldn’t fucking keep going!”
“Couldn’t keep going? Couldn’t keep going?!” Storm cracked Moose across the nose. “You, Sir, are a gods damned fool!” A left hook this time.
“You’re our Father! Our Commander! Our god-damn rallying point” A right hook, and then a left, and then a right uppercut.
Moose grunted as Storm took him to the ground with that last hit.
“If you live for nothing else, live for your children! Even the dead ones, you god-damned dumbass!”
Storm planted a knee in Moose’s chest and hauled him up by his collar.
“You better not come back for a long time, old man.”
Moose gasped as his vision went dark once again.
Moose could hear voices, but they sounded far-away, but he could tell they sounded worried. He tried to open his eyes, but they felt weighed down, like the rest of his body. He felt so exhausted, a stark contrast to how he felt just moments ago when Storm was confronting him.
After what felt like an eternity, which was probably just a day or two, he finally was able to open his eyes. The light momentarily hurt his eyes and head, which caused him to flinch and groan in pain. He heard a shuffling and a voice.
“Dad?!”
It was Cotton.
She rushed to his side. “Oh thank god…” she whispered and hugged him tightly. “I didn’t think you were gonna wake up!”
Moose felt confused, till his head started to hurt like hell. He could scarcely remember what happened, but from the tension around base, it was probably something bad.
“W-What happened…?” he was surprised to find his voice was raspy.
“We heard a gunshot from your room. I was checking up on Bes so we both went to go look, just in case you were in trouble and-” her voice stopped suddenly and she sniffled.
“There was so much blood! I thought you had killed yourself! What did you do?!” Cotton demanded.
Moose hesitated, trying to recall the events. Everything felt foggy, but some parts were coming back.
Cotton sniffled again and sat back.”We had to get Merc, because your heart stopped. Stress induced heart attack, we’re assuming. You got a concussion too, which didn’t help.” Cotton paused. “Bes and Merc are…really pissed off at you.”
“So I can guess…” Moose rasped quietly, gazing at the ceiling. “How long have I been out?”
“A couple of days. Honestly, we weren’t expecting you to wake up so soon. Merc said it’d probably be a week, given that you just had a heart attack and all.”
Moose averted his gaze, unsure whether to tell Cotton about what he remembered after the gunshot. But she got up.
“I’m going to leave you to rest, and tell the others you woke up. Expect some hell tomorrow, Dad.”
“Wouldn’t expect anything less coming from you lot.” Moose grunted.
Cotton sighed and shook her head with a slight smile. “Sleep well, Dad.”
She quietly closed the door, leaving Moose to rest.

“I didn’t want to believe you could be capable of doing something like that. But I couldn’t convince myself that you weren’t“
Major Content Notes:
None!
Wikipedia Synopsis:
The hunt for the Urca de Lima begins when Silver divulges the schedule to Flint, taking them to the ship's location. Rackham stops paying Ms. Mapleton, which causes her to threaten to blackmail Rackham. She threatens to tell the locals what really happened to Mr. Noonan. Meanwhile, Vane makes his way back to New Providence with his new crew. Eleanor's situation changes when a small band of men take over Hornigold's fort and start sinking supply ships in the bay. Gates threatens to call off the attack of the Ranger, so Flint kills him. The final scenes of the season show that the Walrus has beached itself upon the same isle as the Urca de Lima.
This is the final episode of the season so quite a lot goes down, but for the first time I don’t think we’ve needed any major content notes. There is some blood & gore, and nudity at various points, but nothing especially graphic
Summary:
Rackham is docking Mrs Mapleton’s pay because of her skimming. She threatens to tell all the merchants that he murdered Mr Noonan, saying that they’ll band together and see Jack hanged for it. Jack calls this insubordination and fires her. As she reiterates her threat, Max arrives, and points out that the merchants are all enjoying steep discounts (affordable now the books are in order) right now and that because of that, they won’t much care what Mapleton has to say
At sea there is a terrible storm, with the Walrus and Ranger climbing waves as tall as their masts. Belowdecks, as the crew play music and card games, Dr Howell has made a peg leg for Randall and is trying to get Silver to convince him to wear it, saying that a crutch is too big a risk in this weather. Randall is reluctant. Silver tries to convince him by sarcastically pointing out how he’s helped Randall in the past, before throwing the peg leg to him, but Randall just tosses it to the floor and goes back to eating his apple
“Oh, Mr Silver, how can I ever thank you? First you save me from ending up as a stain on the Walrus’s underside, then you secured my position on the crew on the verge of an historic haul, and if that weren’t enough, you’re still trying to find something comfortable to put at the end of my stump. From the bottom of my heart, thank you“
Two crewmen come down from the deck saying that a launch from the Ranger has arrived with Captain Gates. Logan wonders “what could be so fucking important that he has to row through all that shit out there for it”. Silver hears this and hurries to Flint’s cabin
He sits down, and Flint pushes an inkwell over to him saying they’ll make landfall in the morning and need the last part of the schedule. Flint compares what Silver writes out to a book of his own reconnaissance, of bays and inlets in the right area that could reasonably be used for the Urca to take on water. Flint tells Silver to take the information to de Groot and set a course for Division Bay. As Gates says he better get back to the Ranger, Flint says it’d be better not to tempt fate and pulls a bottle up
“Talbot Rhodes’ private stock. I’d been waiting for an occasion. My reckoning is, tomorrow we’ll be able to afford a lot more of it or -”
“- we’ll be too dead to care”
Mr Scott comes into Eleanor’s office to tell her that Captain Lawrence is almost ready to leave. She is worried by the storm, calling it a ship-killer and wondering if God is on Mr Scott’s side in opposing this plan. Mr Scott reassures her, saying that the trouble might have happened anyway, with or without the schedule
“Tomorrow, a thing that you conceived out of thin air becomes real. A thing that will give this place a chance to find some small measure of peace. That is not nothing”
Back on the Walrus, Gates & Flint are finishing the bottle, and reminiscing about the man who found it, Mr Cregg, the carpenter’s mate who could sniff out booze on a prize ship like a bloodhound. Flint tells a story of one time he found a bottle hidden behind a baseboard on a prize and, thinking it was the captain’s best booze he took a big swig in front of everyone, only to realise it was piss. Gates is trying to seem friendly, but in cutaways he seems melancholy, mourning his lost friendship with Flint, whilst Flint seems to be acting as if nothing has happened between them. Gates remembers that he brought Cregg over with him, having both served under Avery together as kids, before getting up to leave, a tear in his eye
"For years, he went on how he’d got this huge stash hidden away, and I should live to survive him because one day, I will be a rich man. As you know, we lost him on the Pembroke.
So I open his locker and what do I find?
Twelve pesos, a busted pocket watch, and a letter with instructions to deliver it to his sister in New York.
Lying sack of shit was Mr Cregg!
So I bought the boys a round with the pesos, traded the pocket watch for a bit of tail, and spent two weeks that winter in New York, trying to deliver that fucking letter to his sister. Looked high and low, never found her. So on the way home, I waited until we were in open water and I could see no land in any direction and I dropped it over the side. Return to the sea.
There are no legacies in this life, are there? No monuments, no history. Just the water. It pays us, and then it claims us, swallows us whole as if we’d never been here at all”
Anne bursts in on Jack whilst he’s taking a bath. She yells at Jack for cutting Mapleton loose without telling her, saying she could tell the entire island about them killing Noonan. She then says the fact he’s keeping council with Max is bothering her even more, and accuses Jack of fucking her
"Jesus H Christ I can’t win with you. She’s in the camp with the men and it’s ‘come on Jack, let’s go kill everyone see if we can’t get around there, hope you don’t mind, made that decision on your behalf’ and now she’s out making us a small fortune by the way and you’re pissed off about that too, might you consider making up your fucking mind about her, please!”
After telling him to fuck himself she leaves, and sees Max standing by a mirror naked, drying her hair. Anne looks bashful, and hurries downstairs as Max turns around and puts on a dressing gown smiling
Vane arrives at Nassau with a few rowing boats full of the men from the lumber camp. They row past a series of lobster pots before beaching the boats and stepping ashore
The Walrus & Ranger are sailing along the coast flying Spanish colours, Division Bay is just past the next headland. Flint gives a brief speech to the crew, before ordering full sails for their final approach
“Llisten here! When we clear the point ahead and spot the Urca at anchor, we’ll begin our final run at her. The Spanish banner may earn us a few hundred yards of confusion before the captain identifies us and opens fire so we’ll close fast on her, hammer her well with our guns, and then take the fight to her decks. That fight will be the fight of our lives make no mistake. But on the other side lies paradise!”
As they round the point though, there is no ship to be seen. The entire crew, including Flint are dumbfounded, and after asking de Groot if he’s sure of their position, Flint storms into his cabin leaving the crew bemused on deck
Eleanor meets Naft, Frasier, & Lawrence at the end of the pier, where she hands Lawrence two manifests, one true, one false, and a substantial purse and wallet for bribery. Lawrence is impatient and wants to leave. As Eleanor comes off the pier she is met by Hornigold & Scott. She tells them that she still needs to remove her father entirely, that she knows he’s on the Underhill estate scheming to undo everything they’ve done. Hornigold reacts in disbelief
“You’re truly amazing, in the moment when stability is at hand and the world is at your feet, your first instinct is to go out in search of someone new to fight”
Scott asks for a moment with her but is interrupted by cannonfire, the shot landing near Hornigold’s ship. After a couple more shots, they realise the cannons being fired are from the fort. Hornigold realises someone other than his men must be in the fort and, as we see a mast break Scott says they need to get off the beach. As they march towards the tavern, Jack comes out of the brothel to ask what’s going on, when he’s told that someone’s taken over the fort he looks over at Anne who swallows anxiously
Gates comes aboard the Walrus and is led to Flint by Dufresne who tells them that the crew have agreed to Flint’s plan. They will land the Walrus and then he has two days to send out scouts to find the Urca. Flint gives the order and heads into his cabin. Dufresne tells Gates that de Groot is bitter that they didn’t listen to him about the cook, that he says there’s no Urca out here, that justice has been delayed long enough, he wants Flint tried immediately, and he believes that for all his talk Gates is just protecting Flint
“I’m protecting all of us! These men are right on the edge, and he wants to rile them up more by talking about a lying thieving captain, then stand on a deserted beach and talk about elections? Before you know it, half a dozen men will have laid claim to the captaincy, council will divide. it won’t be dark yet before the fighting starts
We’ve got to see Flint pay for his crimes, but we’ll do it at home, and we’ll do it like civilised men and that’s how we avoid the abyss!”
Dufresne asks how they can trust Gates, as they know the two of them spent the last night together drinking. Gates hands him a letter asking if it’s good enough, which Dufresne reads and seems surprised by
Sails are spotted, a Spanish man-o-war, and it will be on them in half an hour. Flint signals the Ranger to raise the black and fire two shots off the Walrus’s bow, as well as rigging a spring to the foreward anchor and dropping her immediately. Below you can see, the main anchor cable connected to the bow of the ship running straight up, with a second line, the (slightly slack) spring tied onto this and connected to the stern. By tightening the spring, he can pull the stern out to windward, and turn the ship without moving
De Groot is astounded that Flint means to fight the man-o-war, but Gates shouts to the crew that they have their orders before dragging Flint into his cabin. Dufresne and de Groot share their concerns
"If he engages that ship in battle, we’re dead!”
"I know”
"I know you know, but does Mr Gates?”
Gates tells Flint he can’t let him go down this road. Flint ignores this and explains his plan to Gates, the man-o-war will see them as a Spanish merchantman under attack by pirates, the Spaniard will pass them by to give chase and, before she realises her error they’ll turn and have her trapped, the Walrus raking her stern to bow, and the Ranger raking her bow to stern, and that the warship shows that the Urca is here after all
"all I see is an empty bay, a gardacosta warship, and a captain that’s lost his fucking grip on reality!”
Flint says that the ship isn’t a gardacosta (coastguard) here on patrol, that the only explanation for it being here at this time is that it’s an escort. Gates points out that the entire justification for the venture was that the Urca would have no escort. Flint suggests that they changed their plans, at which point Gates says he’s leaving with the Ranger, leaving Flint dumbstruck in disbelief. They hash it out, furious at each other
“What did you just say?”
“I’m going to weigh anchor, I’m going to make a run for it, and if I can keep ahead of her before dark there’s just a chance we could slip away”
"Without the ranger, I have no chance against that ship”
"I know”
"So you’re deliberately challenging my authority here? Deliberately violating you duty?”
"My duty? My duty is to them, not to you! Although I have violated it more times than I can remember in your defence. Helped you deceive good men, who put their trust in me because I was convinced they would be better off for it! But not here! Not this! This is fucking madness!”
"Mr Gates, if you walk through that door with the intent of subverting my plans, I will have no alternative but to interpret that as an incitement of mutiny”
"You think I’m inciting mutiny?
"You are inciting mutiny!”
"I’m managing one! There are men out there right now that know about Singleton, the book, the cook, all of it! They know! And they mean to see you hang for it!”
Flint goes quiet, asking if Gates told them
"After Billy, I just, I didn’t want to believe you could be capable of doing something like that. But I couldn’t convince myself that you weren’t. That’s when I realised that this has got to end.”
"So what then? You preside over a trial that sees me hanged?”
“No. I’m going to go home. And I’m going to see you and Mrs Barlow secreted away before anybody knows you’re gone. You’re going to go to Boston. You’re going to take the pardon that she’s offered you and that is the last that you and I will ever see of each other”
Flint looks ashamed, and downcast, and begs Gates not to do this. Gates tells him to take a moment, that he’ll deal with the crew, and goes to leave. Flint looks up, and stares intently at the back of Gates’ head, his lip quivering into a snarl
He starts up, slams Gates into the door, and chokes him from behind, repeating “this is not what I wanted, I’m sorry” before snapping Gates’ neck. He repeats “I’m sorry” as his snarl softens and he starts crying, cradling the body of the closest thing he had to a friend
The door creaks open, Flint’s face immediately hardens again and he draws his pistol. It is Silver, saying he came to back Flint up in his case that the Urca can still be won. Flint drops his arm, looking exhausted. Silver comes in and hurriedly closes the door behind him, locking it, before checking Gates’ neck for anything incriminating. Flint bats his hands away, asking “what the fuck are you doing to him” before telling Silver to stop. Flint is utterly defeated, but Silver tells him there is still a way out
"There’s no way out of this”
"Take it from me. There’s always a way”
A letter is delivered to Hornigold and the rest of the consortium, saying that a small band on men were seen approaching the fort from the west that morning, but no-one could identify them, and all the local crews are accounted for. Mr Scott asks if the fort’s great guns could be repositioned to aim at the street. Hornigold’s only response is that he hopes whoever it is won’t be mad enough to consider that and proposes to retake the fort when he is interrupted by Vane & his men on the street outside demanding to speak to Eleanor
Flint steps out of his cabin and, looking Dufresne straight in the eyes tells him that Mr Gates’ heart gave out. He gives orders to signal the Ranger with the plan, telling Mr Thompson he’s in charge, to sail North and, when the Walrus fires on the target, to tack hard to port and join them. Dufresne barges past de Groot into the cabin. As he looks down at Gates’ body, Silver starts speaking
“The question you need to ask yourself is what good can I do.
You can call this murder, a number of the men might even believe you, but will that be enough to stop this fight that is about to happen?
Because if it’s not, a fight we might win becomes a battle we are doomed to lose because the men went into it infected with your suspicions, with your doubts.
So, Mr Quartermaster, is that truly what’s in their best interests?”
Dufresne steps out and walks straight past de Groot again, over to Flint.
"When the warship draws close, she’ll ask our last port of call. Saint Augustine is the closest and as she’s likely a customs ship, we must identify our cargo as anything but tobacco; Seville regulates the trade heavily”
Vane is Eleanor’s office, his boots up on her desk, rolling a cigar as she comes in, and sweeps his feet off asking what the fuck he did
"Spend enough time on an island, you begin to forget there’s a whole world out there. A world where the rules are different” he puts his feet back up and goes back to rolling his cigar “I went out there and found men who don’t know the rules here and who don’t much care to learn them. They helped me surprise Captain Hornigold’s men, we took his fort, and not once were any of them burdened with the though ‘what if this were to upset Eleanor Guthrie’”
He threatens to keep sinking ships, and maybe even sink the Walrus when she comes back with the Spanish gold, just out of spite. He says that because the fort controls the bay, Hornigold was her partner when he controlled the fort and so now, he should get to be her partner. He says being a tenant didn’t work out so well, and now he’d like a stake
He then describes the first time he saw her, when she was thirteen, and sneaking out despite Mr Scott’s rules. He says that despite her age she walked between the camps like she owned the place, completely fearless. He then suggests that all she really wants is to not have any men bossing her around, and that he has no intention of telling her what to do as long as he gets what he wants. She begrudgingly agrees, but promises that she will drive him out once he inevitably gets comfortable
“I know you. Better than your father, better than Scott, maybe better than anyone. You don’t give a shit about money, or respect, or the things you’ve built here. I think you’re just tired of fathers telling you what to do and so I’m offering you a life free from them. With me in that fort, you do as you like as long as it doesn’t cross me you’ll hear no complaints”
"You know I have no choice but to say yes. But before I do, know this: you’ll sit in that fort for a while, you’ll get comfortable, and that’s the day I’m going to push you and your men right into the fucking sea”
As Vane saunters out, he dismissively nods at Hornigold, calling him “Ben”. Eleanor tells him that Vane now has his seat on the consortium. She tells Hornigold that it’s no use him trying to take the fort, because she told Vane about the tunnels he’d have used to launch a surprise attack. She defends this as acting in everyone’s best interests and Hornigold leaves, promising that this won’t be the end of this
“You told me to keep emotion from clouding judgement, to act in everyone’s best interest. I believe that’s what I’m doing”
Vane enters the brothel and is met by a nervous Jack. He says that in some ways it had to come to this: him deciding if Jack lives or dies. We see Mapleton standing behind Vane’s men. Vane confronts him about killing Hamund and his men, and we see Jack speechless, and Anne wearing a frightened expression for pretty much the first time
“Hamund brings you out of bed, marches you down to the wrecks to look for a stash of stolen pearls and somehow only you and your dog make it back alive?”
“Quite a moment. Jack Rackham with nothing to say. Had I a shrewd quartermaster right now, he would tell me that I can’t let what you did stand, he would say that an offence like that demanded an example be made of both of you, the bloodier the better, but today I’m a little less worried about perception than I used to be. As long as I own that fort, it doesn’t really matter, so the street will know what you did, they will know that you betrayed your brothers for a woman. That story will spread far and wide, and you’ll never sail beneath the black again. You’ll sit in this place and rot with the rest of the whores. Something tells me that will sting worse than dying”
The man-o-war comes alongside the Walrus, and Silver shouts across, with Flint behind the rail next to him feeding him lines. He says that they were attacked by pirates, that their last port of call was Saint Augustine, and that they are carrying tobacco. De Groot questions Dufresne about this
"If I’m not mistaken, you told him to state us as anything but a tobacco trader did you not?”
"II did. He means to prove that ship is not gardacosta, that it’s here for the same reason we are. If that ship lets us pass, he will have both renewed the men’s lust for gold and their faith in his judgement”
“Time and again he gambles with our lives, that is when he’s not taking them in cold blood and once more his influence grows. We’re at his mercy with no way to challenge him”
The Spanish ship sails on and Flint orders all hands to quietly go to their stations, and to fire at 300 yards. The Walrus starts pulling on its spring line to bring the stern out slowly, so the Spanish ship thinks they’re just drifting. At 100 yards, he orders the gunports opened and sights down a gun saying “we only get one shot at this. If we miss, we die”
Just after 200 yards Dufresne pulls his pistol on Flint, accusing him of piratical crimes against his crew, that he murdered Singleton, Billy, & Gates, and that he planned to steal a portion of the treasure fleet for himself. Flint gives the order to fire, but the crew do not. Belowdecks, de Groot is taking Silver into the Surgeon’s cabin. Dufresne hands the letter to Logan saying it is a confession from Mr Gates of his knowledge of & complicity in Flint’s crimes, and Logan confirms that it is written in Gates’ hand
Flint continues to repeat the order to fire growing frustrated at the crew’s inaction, shouting that they’re going to lose the enemy and don’t have time for this. Eventually he strides down and grabs one of the slow matches used to fire the cannons and goes to light the touchhole firing the cannons, but is shot in the shoulder by Dufresne
Silver wrestles with de Groot, but is knocked to the ground. As de Groot readies his pistol, he is knocked out by Randall who has hit him on the head from behind with the peg leg. Flint is pressed against the side by a gunport watching the Spanish ship slip away when one of the Walrus’ cannons fires, taking him, and the entire crew by surprise. Silver looks out at them, saying that it had to be done. Flint tells Dufresne to fight
“There’s no running now. Fire, Mr Dufresne. Everything you’ve got. Don’t waste this moment”
Dufresne hesitates, and the Spaniard’s sternchasers fire, hitting the Walrus. At this, Dufresne and Flint both start shouting orders to hire, and the crew slip into battle. Both the Walrus and Ranger get some volleys in, scoring several hits and causing a small explosion and fire onboard the man-o-war
The man-o-war comes about, her gunports open, and she fires. The Spanish broadside tears into the Walrus sending yard arms crashing down, and gun carriages flying. We see the Ranger’s magazine explode, and more and more holes be shot into the Walrus. As Silver tries to help an injured man, crying out for the doctor, Flint is knocked into the water. Seeing people and debris continue to be sent flying from the Walrus, he stops treading water and allows himself to be dragged under by the weight of his clothes and equipment
Eleanor is on the bridge between the tavern and brothel and Max comes out to meet her halfway. Eleanor starts to apologise to Max, but she tells her not to, saying she was “standing between you and your dreams for this place, you did what you had to do” and Eleanor reminds her of her words, that Nassau is just sand and cannot love her back but Max pushes back
"Sand has its virtues. On sand nothing is fixed. Nothing is permanent. Fates change so quickly.
Yesterday Captain Hornigold was immovable from that fort and Captain Vane was a beggar, now look at them today.
Yesterday I was a whore of little consequence, easily dismissed, easily forgotten, today I am a madam with an income and allies, and a woman who has learned the most important of lessons, never let anyone stand between you and your ambitions. Thank you for teaching it to me”
Vane sits in the fort as we see Lawrence push off, Hornigold’s damaged ship still in the bay, and Hornigold and Scott look on. Eleanor watches in the shallows, teary-eyed over what her ambitions have lost her
Flint wakes up on a beach, topless, a bit of cloth pressed to his wound as a dressing. He sits up and we see Dufresne, Silver, several other pirates, and the Walrus next to them on the beach with several holes clean through her hull. Flint asks why he’s still alive and Dufresne tells him to get up. As Dufresne leads them over the island they’re wrecked on, Silver says he was certain about his information regarding the Urca
“Unfortunately, you & I failed to take into account the weather. The Urca de Lima wrecked at sea last night. Dashed by the storm”
As we peek over the brow of the hill and see the Urca broken in two on another beach, the Spanish sailors unloading her onto the beach with the man-o-war at anchor in the bay, Flint seems to regain his resolve
