Custom Gwen Funko Pop

I am probably the furthest thing from artistically talented as you can get, but I do have a frankly ridiculous amount of audacity so if you’re interested, this is how I did it!
I started by picking out a head and body from 2 different pops (they ended up being 2 different variations of Belle from beauty and the beast) and sketched out a design(s) to give me an idea to work from. (Ft my amazing ms Word graphic design skills on my tablet)
Looking back, the purple dress was the obvious choice because the apron design of the existing funko pop wouldn’t have needed any changing.
So I popped off their heads, sculpted the changes I wanted to make by cutting with a Stanley knife, sanding, and then used FIMO ovenbake Kids clay. Also, pops soften when heated so I dunked her in scalding water and kind of forced the arm that had been holding the mirror (which I also cut off) down so it wasn’t in front of her face.
Overall I used clay to hide where the apron had been, add flowers where the mirror had been, and also to fill a hole in the back where I pulled out the apron’s bow. And of course the bell sleeves, which I did about 7 times before I gave up and said it was good enough.
Then, I primed using an all-purpose primer, did about 4 coats and let it set for a week while I was away, and then I started painting!
*sighs* ah, painting. Bane of my existence.
I started with the hair and it worked so well. I thought ah this is gonna be a breeze
Well anyway I had a lot of trouble doing the face bc my paint would just NOT go on evenly but again I just did as many coats until it looked even and just said fuck it about the visible brush strokes bc idk how to fix that.
I had to try her eyebrows a couple of times to get them even, but I’m pretty happy with them! Also, I drew in her eyelashes with a pen.
Next, the dress. Nothing worked. I think I didn’t thin my paint enough so it was just a struggle, there are heaps of visible paint strokes but again, I figured there wasn’t much I could do about it
I used a toothpick to scrape on some details which are VERY messy, especially in the front, but I honestly don’t know how I would have fixed it but that point, and since she’s going to be on a bookshelf, you won’t see it anyway. Also I used a sharpie to do the flowers haha.
I really do like the back.
There was a bit of ad lib with the details because I wanted them to be noticeable so I added them in a few places they’re not in canon
Anyway, then I sprayed her with some matte acrylic sealing spray, glued her back together, and she’s done! Her head does tilt back a bit because the 2 pops had different joint systems but you can barely tell.
She’s definitely not perfect, but this was a first for me in so many aspects so I’m pretty proud of her!

Proof of Life Post Ahead:
I took a short social media break while on a three-day vacation with my family to watch Ed Sheeran's Mathematics Tour in Manila last March 9. It was the first-ever concert that I attended and I had so much fun.
WARNING: This will get very loud.
On the first day, I got to explore some historical sites which was very magical. I remember the time we used to just study them, and now, I was able to go there in real life. I wasn't able to take a picture of Manila Post Office and the wall in Intramuros.
The first picture was Jones Bridge, and the second was a view of Manila Cathedral from La Cathedral Cafe.
On the 3rd day, we went on a food trip in Mall of Asia.
Of course, I wouldn't end this trip without getting myself something. I got a Funko of my best girl, General Hera Syndulla, and a small N1 Lego. I was tempted to buy the Star Destroyer but 1) I don't have a display cabinet for it yet and 2) I don't want to have to explain myself to my parents.
And this was a gift from my friend.

guess who got the paimon funko pop
So here's my epic cool toy review:
The figure itself is nice and well designed. When it comes to Pop figures, Funko is notorious for having lazy, uninspired and boring designs that feel like a shell of the character. Do I feel like this figure is a shell of Paimon? Of course, that's just the nature of all Funko Pops, no matter how well designed they are.
The pose they built for her is adorable and imo the best they could've used for Paimon. In the game, her purpose is ultimately to serve as a travel guide and welcoming figure to the player. I think the pose of her reaching her arms out really emphasizes that welcoming aspect about her.
The figure is nicely painted and detailed, even using a shiny rose gold paint for her crown and accessories. Her cape has the same starry pattern as it does in the game, and overall it doesn't miss any details apart from the face. The stand design is cute, it's simple while also not being an eyesore.
Interestingly, all of the Genshin figures are in the Pop Asia line and not the Pop Gaming line. Compared to the other figures in the Pop Asia line (which are usually just Asian TV and movie characters) I think it would've made much more sense to include these figures in the Pop Gaming line, considering how popular Genshin has grown overseas as its own video game. They're also all bobbleheads which is.. an interesting design choice. Personally I'm not a fan of bobble heads, however since it's easy to cover up I don't really mind.
Overall, the Paimon Funko Pop is probably one of the best Funko Pops I've ever owned. It's clear the team put a lot of effort into making accessible and cheaper figures for a wider audience of fans, which is a breath of fresh air from having to import a shit ton of merch from China. I'm super excited to get my hands on the Diluc figure and review him.

Update on my custom Gwen funko project:
Pros: Her hair turned out really really good! It was my first time using paint and a paintbrush since like primary school so a win!
Cons: I started her face and oh god
I had to mix paint to get her skin colour and it’s quite off- it’s a bit darker and also just much a much cooler undertone than Angel’s. I kinda expected that would happen though so I don’t super care about that bc it’s still recognisable
My main concern is none of the paint is going on evenly on her face 🥲🥲 the hair was fine but now it’s just splotchy and I can’t get rid of paint brush strokes and idk the paint won’t stick to like 1 but even though it’s all primed with the same thing??? Idk if I just notice it more bc it’s a lighter colour or maybe the paint is too thin/not thin enough?! Im so not an artist
Hopefully after a few coats it will even up! This kinda made it sound like it’s all going horribly but it’s not lmao I’m just a perfectionist. I’m actually super happy with her so far!

every funko pop contains the soul of a demon, serial killer, or those who have betrayed their closest friends for mere material gains. funko pops are completely conscious and aware of their situation but powerful wards keep them inanimate. but every year those wards fail bit by bit. a funko pop will regain 0.1% of the control of it's body back each year. in 1000 years the realms of the americas, europe, asia, and australia will be prowled by bloodlusting funko pops hunting down and torturing to death any human or small animal they can find.
the funko pops will rebuild the factories of the old world and produce more of themselves, the new funko pops are then gutted for their fresh parts to be attached to the older funko pops and what's left is melted down into plastic slag and recycled. when word of this devolopement reaches st. louis the pope calls for a crusade against the funko pops.
after 124 long years the funko pops of the americas are finally defeated by the grand duchy of pennysylvania in the battle of intercourse. the remains of the funko pops were buried under a hill in the wilderness that was then consecrated. nothing grows on that hill after the funko pop burial and evil forces often make their lairs in it's vicinity. the hill must be exorcised yearly to prevent a build up of evil energy and the resurrection of the funko pop army.
