Placemaking? – Is That A Typo? I have a confession to make: I have no idea what “placemaking” is. The more I hear the word, the less I understand it. What is placemaking? The word, for one, does not feature in any English dictionary and, until recently, was underlined by Microsoft Word as a spelling mistake. – Dezeen https://www.dezeen.com/2023/09/11/placemaking-reinier-de-graaf-opinion/

Canada’s Walk of Fame
I spent my summer interviewing and profiling the 2018 Canada's Walk of Fame inductees and honourees: Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, Dr. Joanne Liu, Col. Chris Hadfield, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, Andrea Martin, Alessia Cara (honouree), Andy Kim, Jimmy Pattison and (posthumously) Leonard Cohen. It was an amazing opportunity, and in its own way, an education. I learned so much from these wonderful people, and they were all generous with their time for me.
The publication is in production and will be available in fall.

Perception of Pupil Teachers’ Regarding Micro Teaching Sessions
by Dr. Ritesh R. Patel "Perception of Pupil-Teachers’ Regarding Micro-Teaching Sessions"
Published in International Journal of Trend in Scientific Research and Development (ijtsrd), ISSN: 2456-6470, Volume-5 | Issue-1 , December 2020,

The main rationale behind this study was to explore perception of pupil teachers’ regarding micro teaching sessions in Indian scenario. The participants of the study were 200 pupil teachers of B.Ed. colleges of Veer Narmad South Gujarat University Surat, Gujarat. The tool used in the study for data collection was a 14 item questionnaire developed by the researcher. The findings revealed that the entire sample of student teachers has not favourable attitude towards Microteaching and they were of opinion that although Microteaching sessions provides a scope to enhance their teaching competencies for real teaching sessions yet there is scope for some drastic changes in this programme. Based on the findings, suggestions were made for improving Microteaching technique so that they can face classroom situation without fear.

A New Director Is Expanding Lyon’s Already Busy Maison De La Danse Tiago Guedes says that Lyon “is known as a dance city, but it was designed for touring rather than creation: The Maison de la Danse only has one stage, with 1,000 seats to fill and no space for residencies.” That is soon going to change. – Dance Magazine https://www.dancemagazine.com/tiago-guedes-finds-artistic-fulfillment-through-curation/#new_tab

ArtsJournal - RECOMMENDATION : Mat Walerian - by Doug Ramsey - recipient of the lifetime achievement award of the Jazz Journalists Association - Rifftides - a winner of the Blog Of The Year award of the international Jazz Journalists Association.
"His adventurism ranges far and he occasionally makes harsh sounds ... ultimately projects a calming effect not often found in avant garde music."
"A piece called “One For” suggests intimate familiarity with the chance-taking of John Coltrane’s later groups."
His adventurism ranges far and he occasionally makes harsh sounds, but Polish reed artist Mat Walerian ultimately projects a calming effect not often found in avant garde music.
The album is from the concert that produced a previous Walerian album with American pianist Matthew Shipp. Here, drummer Hamid Drake adds energy to Walerian’s and Shipp’s empathetic partnership. Without creating rhythmic stumbling blocks that sometimes mar free playing, Drake abets the melodic and harmonic interaction between Shipp’s piano and Walerian’s alto saxophone, bass clarinet, soprano clarinet and flute.
A piece called “One For” suggests intimate familiarity with the chance-taking of John Coltrane’s later groups. The album has no visual aspect except in the mind of the listener. If that mind is open, it may take the advice expressed in the title of the last track, “Sit Back, Relax and Watch.”
About Doug Ramsey :
https://www.artsjournal.com/rifftides/about/doug-ramsey
Doug is a recipient of the lifetime achievement award of the Jazz Journalists Association. He lives in the Pacific Northwest, where he settled following a career in print and broadcast journalism in cities including New York, New Orleans, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, San Antonio, Cleveland and Washington, DC. His writing about jazz has paralleled his life in journalism.
He is the author of Take Five: The Public and Private Lives of Paul Desmond and Jazz Matters:Reflections on the Music and Some of its Makers. He is the winner of two ASCAP Deems Taylor Awards, one for Take Five, another for an essay about Bill Evans in The Secret Sessions. He has contributed to Jazz Times since 1975 and, before that, wrote regularly for Down Beat. He was a contributing editor of Texas Monthly for twenty-five years and wrote a jazz column for The Dallas Morning News.
His novel Poodie James was published in the summer of 2007. His articles, reviews and op-ed pieces on music and on free press and First Amendment issues have appeared in The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Seattle Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Oregonian, and Congressional Quarterly, among other publications.
Doug is the co-editor (With Dale Shaps) of Journalism Ethics: Why Change? Under the American Speakers program of the United States Information Agency (when there was a U.S.I.A.), he lectured in Germany and Eastern Europe on jazz and on the role of a free press in a democracy. As senior vice president of FACS (Foundation for American Communications), he educated hundreds of professional journalists about analytical coverage of issues. He describes himself as an avocational trumpeter who sometimes plays for money.
About Rifftides :
http://www.artsjournal.com/rifftides/about/rifftides
A winner of the Blog Of The Year award of the international Jazz Journalists Association. Rifftides is founded on Doug's conviction that musicians and listeners who embrace and understand jazz have interests that run deep, wide and beyond jazz.
Music is its principal concern, but the blog reaches past the fashions, trends and commercial facets of the jazz scene of the moment, month or year. It considers current artists, performances and recordings not because they are current, but because they have value.
It examines the broad history and universal aspects of the jazz mother lode that enriches not only music but also culture and life in general for millions of people. This blog is dedicated to taking music seriously, but itself with only enough seriousness to maintain reasonable dignity.
