[Image: Protest art in the style of a linocut print. It’s black and white, with a dash of blood red thrown in. The top of the print is rendered in mostly white, and reads ‘NO DOMINION OVER LAND.’ It depicts a Coyote Woman with her foot stuck in a bear trap. She clutches the stream of her own blood, or maybe the stream that washes her blood away. It flows across the border, to the bottom half of the composition, which is rendered in mostly black.
Here, a Javelina Man pries open the bear trap with his formidable teeth, freeing Coyote Woman. He holds the rest of the river as it becomes braided into a delta. This text reads ‘NO DOMINION OVER LIFE.’]
He was staring out at the impounded waters of the Artibonite. They stretched off to the east and west and out of sight among the mountains. From here the amount of land the dam had drowned seemed vast. Still gazing, Farmer said, “To understand Russia, to understand Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Boston, identity politics, Sri Lanka, and Life Savers, you have to be on top of this hill.”
The list was clearly jocular. So was his tone of voice. But I had the feeling he had said something important. I thought I got it, generally. This view of drowned farmland, the result of a dam that had made his patients some of the poorest of the poor, was a lens on the world. His lens. Look through it and you’d begin to see all the world’s impoverished in their billions and the many linked causes of their misery.
- Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder
Thinking about borders and bodies of water and human bodies today. Let’s be Javelina Men for one another, ok?

🦋✨ leave 5 facts about 3 of your ocs and pass them on to other people, asking them about an oc of your choice or let them choose what they want !! ✨🦋
GISELLE CONNOR
she's naturally a wavy brunette. she used to have full on curls when she was a young girl. she burned her hair once trying to straighten it for picture day in 7th grade. its been wispy and mostly heat damaged since.
back in 9th grade, giselle maliciously broke her mother's phone charger after an especially bad argument. she will never forget the ass whooping she got for that.
her favorite snacks are pop-tarts and almond joys!
giselle's nickname, "little" GiGi (now just gigi) was directly given to her by her late grandmother, Gionella aka "big GiGi". they had an incredible bond, and giselle was devastated in gionella's passing. she didn't even get a chance to say goodbye.
her favorite TV shows are Snapped, Breaking Bad, and Botched!
EDEN STCLAIR
eden was born and raised in Darien, Connecticut.
she's second generation to foreign immigrants! her grandparents are from Artibonite, Haiti. eden is haitian. she is not bilingual, however she can understand what's being said in creole but can only respond in english.
she was originally a twin, but ended up consuming the other one in the womb, making eden an only child. her mother, Amienne, never made her aware of this, though. her daughter's bleeding heart wouldn't be able to take it.
eden's never raised her voice in anger before in her entire life. she is incredibly soft-spoken and gentle. loud noises, physical threats and/or general aggression makes her cry.
she unofficially adopted a little wild rabbit by the lake she would sit at every afternoon when she was nine years old. she named him Jopper, and loved him with all of her heart. she never took to taking him away from his real home in the woods, and bring him into her home as an act of displacement and ownership. little eden learned beautifully from her mother that love should be an act of devotion and understanding, rather than possessiveness.
JAIDEN SPENCER
jaiden was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut. he was raised in Norwalk for most of his life. (him and eden never crossed paths whatsoever.)
the thick rimmed reading glasses he wears often gets him mistaken for someone smarter he actually is. in reality, he just likes to lie to people unprovoked. he's a liar.
jaiden is bajan-trinidadian!
his lucky number is 4 and 32, which are multiples of each other.
the best moments he can recall in his earlier school life ironically were when he was in summer school, and in the boys & girls club. he just loved causing mischief in both programs.

Support people impacted by the violence in Haiti!

The allocation from the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) will go towards providing food, water, protection, healthcare, sanitation and hygiene support to displaced people and host communities in the capital and in the neighbouring Artibonite province. A $12 million contribution from a United Nations emergency humanitarian fund will support people impacted by the violence that broke out in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, in March.

The First Sheriff in Escambia County, Florida - Henri Pierre
Henri Piere 1821 By Mike Simmons Some say, “Piere,” and others say, “Pierre.” Which is correct? Let’s say that both are. In the late 1770s, the country of Haiti was on the verge of a revolution, which officially began in 1791 and ended with the country’s independence in 1804. In the midst of the uprisings prior to the war, Henri Piere was born there, in Domingue, Artibonite in 1778[i]. As soon…

Reflecting on Hispaniola
An astronaut aboard the International Space Station took this photograph of Hispaniola while in orbit over the Atlantic Ocean. Hispaniola is divided into two countries, Haiti to the west and the Dominican Republic to the east. The island is part of the Greater Antilles, a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea stretching from Cuba (out of frame to the right) to Puerto Rico (bottom-left of the image). In this view, north is toward the bottom-right.
The oblique angle of the photo reveals Earth’s upper troposphere and stratosphere, visible as the light-blue strip in the top-left corner of the image. Atmospheric phenomena, such as a plume of smoke over the north-central part of the island and various cloud types, also make an appearance.
Sunglint brightens virtually all water surfaces in this image, highlighting the island’s hydrography. Sunglint occurs when sunlight reflects from a water surface directly back to the observer, or in this case, the camera. The Artibonite and Yaque del Sur rivers are especially visible against the darker landscape as bright, thin lines. The calm waters of interior lakes, such as Lago Enriquillo and nearby Lake Azuéi, and coastal bays along the island’s south side appear bright white, as sunglint is stronger in places with calmer winds and smoother water surfaces.
Trails of clouds stream downwind from Gonâve Island, west of Hispaniola, and the Tiburon Peninsula farther to the southwest. Such clouds likely form when warm, less-dense air near the ground rises and condenses. Clouds can also be caused by the orographic effect, which occurs when mountains act as a natural barrier that prevents the passage of air masses. Mountains force the air to rise and cool, triggering water vapor to condense into clouds on the windward side of a mountain while leaving the leeward side drier. This effect is evident along the Cordillera Central, where clouds have formed on the east side of the mountain range (windward) and mostly clear skies prevail on the west side (leeward).
Astronaut photograph ISS068-E-36387 was acquired on January 2, 2023, with a Nikon D5 digital camera using a focal length of 50 millimeters. The image was provided by the ISS Crew Earth Observations Facility and the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit at Johnson Space Center. The image was taken by a member of the Expedition 68 crew. It has been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast, and lens artifacts have been removed. The International Space Station Program supports the laboratory as part of the ISS National Lab to help astronauts take pictures of Earth that will be of the greatest value to scientists and the public and to make those images freely available on the Internet. Additional images taken by astronauts and cosmonauts can be viewed at the NASA/JSC Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth. Caption by Wilfredo García López/Jacobs-JETS II Contract at NASA-JSC.
