Headcannon that a lot of the Orphanage staff were people displaced from the Great war.
People who weren't originally from Japan who found a place working at the Orphanage because of the Headmaster.
He fought with them and gave them a job, a home.
And maybe that's why they turned a blind eye to his methods, or even why they understood them and followed them.
Anyway, this results in Atsushi being multilingual.
As while the staff taught Japanese, a lot of them would speak in their own native languages.
Especially when they were angry, which they usually were. And so the kids learned to picked up on it fast.
You couldn't use "I didn't understand" as an excuse.
It just meant you were ignoring orders.
A lot of the books were ones the staff had owned as kids.
Given they hadn't had the budget for anything more.
And Atsushi spent hours pouring over pages and figuring out details and words.
Atsushi didn't realise that most people don't know more than one language.
For him it was the norm, a necessity, a means of survival.
Because the staff would change their language like shades on a chameleon, and if you got caught out you'd be punished.
He never bought it up, he hadn't needed to given everyone at the Agency spoke Japanese.
So did he.
Sometimes he listen to music on headphones from other languages.
Because it was werid speaking and listening to one language all the time.
Though Atsushi makes an effort to look more into the languages he's learned.
Because he's afraid of losing another part of himself. Esspecially after everything that happens in Dead Apple.
There are clues here and there.
Like how Atsushi watches soaps in his spare time.
Ones his old matrons would watch when they were supposed to be watching him.
Kyouka finds them intresting and sometimes watches them with him.
She doesn't notice that Atsushi only turns on subtitles when she's watching.
However no one knew until one time Fyodor made a mistake with his Japanese.
(Going off of Wan where he struggles with it.)
Dazai laughed at him, Fyodor cursed at him in Russian. And Atsushi, absolutely done with all this man's bullshit.
Proceeded to swear at him in Russian. Full on, rip this man to shreds, curse out his entire bloodline.
Fyodor was completely speechless, as was everyone else.
Dazai looks at Atsushi with the most devious look in the world. "Soo... Atsushi, mind sharing that with the class?"
Atsushi is confused, realised no one else knows what he said and is so embarrassed.
"You know Russian?!"
"You... Don't?"
Eventually, Atsushi quietly tells Dazai what he said.
Dazai falls onto the ground rolling around laughing his ass off.
"Atsushi I have never been more proud of you than I am now."

Detective Minoura visits the Agency, spots Kyouka and wonders if she's the assassin they're after.
Atsushi makes up a lie about finding her on a mission... And was doing a cossack dance in a wheat field.
Which 1st off, someone teach Atsushi how to lie plz.
And second of all, Google tells me is known as Hopak and is a dance in both Ukraine and Russia.... Sorry if that's wrong.
And I'm like... What an oddly specific thing to pull out of nowhere?
And how the fuck does Atsushi, I lived in secluded and isolated Orphanage in the middle of nowhere in Japan, know what that is?
Someone had to have taught him that.

Poe is multilingual and he uses that to his advantage.
I don’t know what languages he would speak but let’s say he at least speaks Japanese, English, French and Spanish.(he would probably know more tbh)
Anyways he would use this to his advantage to call Ranpo names like darling or my sunshine. Like just couple names. They are not dating tho.
So like an example would be that Ranpo helps with Poes latest book and Poe would say "thanks, ma parole(my darling)"
Or like “<<starlight>> help me out over here”(<<>> means it’s in English)
And so on.(pls if you have more ideas tell me)
But continuing this idea the agency(who knows at least English) would catch on quickly but really just not say anything. Ranpo would try to ask them what Poe had just said but they would all just make up excuses or say they didn’t know.
Also the reason it would be hard for Ranpo to know what Poe is saying is that Poe constantly switches names and languages.(he has a hidden list of nicknames)
This would get to a point where Ranpo would get a dictionary of every language that Poe knew and when poe hits him with the ma parole and man starts flipping.
But also Poe(when their alone) would use this to confess to Ranpo. Or like go into great detail about Ranpos eyes. Of course Ranpo would get annoyed at Poe just talking to him in a different language for like 10 minutes that he did his best to learn at least the basics of some of the languages.
Which leads us to a scene where Poe is (kinda) confessing and Ranpo instead of shoving him off like he always does or questioning Poe just turns to him and in English “<<yes i accept.>>”
Poe is obviously stunned that Ranpo just replied in English and that he just excepted he confession. And Ranpo ,who is impatient, then kisses him and so on.
I am not done I have a little more for this.
Poe would entirely write about Ranpo but would always do it in another language so Ranpo couldn’t sneak around and read it.
Also Atsushi would entirely ask Poe for nicknames and pet names just to annoy Akutagawa.(this would actually be adorable and Atsushi would entirely use it because he knows that Akutagawa knows what he’s saying)

Atsushi inadvertently becomes the ADA’s jack of all trades through the power of YouTube Tutorials. Kenji accidentally breaks a desk? YouTube tutorial. They need no-bake cookies for Ranpo’s sugar cravings? YouTube tutorial. He needs to figure out Excel because Kunikida is panicking about deadlines again? YouTube tutorial. Dazai was so chaotic that he broke a bone and they need an emergency split while Yosano isn’t there? YouTube tutorial. Anyways! (Nyanon, 1/6)
It’s okay, they grew up in an awful situation and only had each other, they can bath together a lot and no one can say anything. But yesss that sounds like something she’d do- And actually, maybe she and Kyouka don’t get along, at first? Because Lucy feels her position as Best Friend is being threatened by having someone so close to them, and Kyouka might not trust anyone outside of Atsushi for a little bit. That’s just how the mind works sometimes! (Nyanon, 2/6)
Then they realize they both like using their closeness with Atsushi to piss off Dazai and they’re just like, “oh, a Comrade.” Also, do you think Atsushi would know about his ability, here? Since Lucy would be there, too, and she has a pretty obvious ability, so maybe they’d put the pieces together... And hm, recommendations? Well, I’m not multilingual, so these will all be English language books- I’m awful at learning new ones, nothing sticks- But let’s see... (Nyanon, 3/6)
Well, I’ve always been a fan of Fablehaven and Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, and while I’m not as big a fan of it, the Percy Jackson universe is well known for being pretty inclusive compared to other series, I think. All three of them combine the modern world and fantasy pretty well, though the first focuses more on magical fantasy, the last focuses more on mythological fantasy, and the second focuses on a combination of them. (Also, speaking of fantasy, I now have a feel-good Magic Reserve AU. I have too many AUs.) But! While I’m not an avid reader of detective novels myself, I do agree that Ranpo lending Atsushi books is adorable~ I want them to interact more than they do in canon, ugh. I want Atsushi to interact more with everyone than he does in canon, really. Moving on to another General Atsushi Concept: He hand makes a good majority of the presents he gives to others! As mentioned earlier, he might consult a YouTube tutorial to do it, but he just doesn’t always have a lot of money- So he hopes that homemade dolls or accessories, baked goods, photo albums, and other things made by hand are just as good. He’s always worried that the receiver will hate it, afterwards, but it’s the thought that counts, right? (Nyanon, 6/6)

while i do feel like he WOULD know i also feel like he W O U L DNT??? like, since he cant control his ability unlike lucy- it feels like she wouldnt tell him because she knows the guilt would be too much if he realises that HES the one causing so much trouble and he cant control it- and would definitely justify the headmasters abuse even MORE. so while he would know, i also see why he wouldnt. but when he does get to know with dazai and the others he’ll definitely be sad/mad at lucy for keeping it from him but after a heartfelt conversation he’ll understand and theyll make up uwu
(it feels kinda weird to have a universe where atsushi Knows of his ability and then have the same story of how he got into the ADA play out- for some reason i cant wrap my head around how THAT would work)
dont worry!! while i am multi lingual i dont mind reading mostly english books- most detective novels i be reading (even lighthearted ones for kids) are in the language of the country i live in. ooo percy jackson!!! love those books uwuwu though ive only read a few of them. and ill check the other books out when i have the time!!
i want atsushi to interact with everyone in canon more as well smh, especially fukuzawa and yosano- idk they just seem more interesting owo. BU T him making most of the presents he gives AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA THATS SO CUTEEEEEEE, he’ll definitely put a lot of time on them and make sure theyre perfect ugh <333 hes so cute and anyone getting a present from him would appreciate it so much (tho i feel like maybe for some special occassions like maybe the persons birthday, he’ll also buy a present at the side- maybe some snacks, a thing theyve been talking about- atsushi would probably keep note of what the people closest to him have been wanting throughout the year)

I ship you with Atsushi Nakajima of the Armed Detective Agency ! In this case, for you and Atsu, opposites attract. Your crude + sassy manner brings out Atsushi’s more social + fun side, otherwise he’d always remain pretty timid + mild-mannered. It’s all good, though, because Atsushi can help calm you down when your patience isn’t always there to keep your temper in check. He loves that you’re able to be strong in your beliefs and a blunt, yet be as compassionate and nurturing as a person can be. I ship you with Bruno Bucciarati of Passione ! If it was up to the two of you, you guys would adopt all wayward teens and young adults in all of Italy. Hell, maybe even the world. One of the things that Bruno loves most about you is your sense of compassion and selflessness, even though he warns you to be selfish at times. You could tell him the same thing, seeing as his absolute selflessness is his downfall in all situations. Actually, when the two of you first met, you guys hated each other. Bruno was on a mission to squeeze some information out of another capo, and Bruno had good intel that you knew the capo personally. He was wrong--and after about an hour of arguing back and forth, Bruno relinquished his reason as to why he was looking for this specific man. You wanted to help--only because he had brought you into this of his own will--and your help proved necessary, seeing as Bruno finally found who he had been looking for according to your own wit. After that, he couldn’t directly ask you to join Passione--he’d grown too fond of you to put you in that kind of danger, so he formed a different proposition. Now, the two of you live in a little cottage by the water in South Italy, housing five foster children, ten foster cats, and a whole herd of cows. Bruno took up his father’s occupation as an honest fisherman after he grew tired of the deceit and violence of the mafioso life, and you tended to the animals. It is quite the peaceful life for you and Bruno.

HES A GOOD BOY AND A SMART BOY HE DESERVES TO DO ANYTHING HE WANTS. And yeah she’d soften up eventually!!! Especially with a history as fucked up as Kyouka’s is. But it can be hard to,, Adjust? To someone else getting some of the attention you’re used to receiving from another person. BUT yes they eventually realize that they must unite under a common banner: Making Dazai very jealous. Maybe like, their first real Upset, since, even if they got angry with each other before, they wouldn’t really have the energy to do anything about? Since they would be more focused on dealing with the orphanage... Hm. Either way, I agree, once they talk it out, no one’s too upset. (Also, that makes sense! He’s super mega cute and I love him, he’d put SO much effort into it and even if it isn’t perfect, everyone who gets something cherishes it, even if they say they don’t. That’s usually just cute or funny stuff, like “Kyouka, no, don’t run away with the giant crêpe bunnies, they’re lying-“ or “Dazai-san, give me back my paws, I’ll drown with you later. Kunikida-san needs them for paperwork.” Other times, it’s weird stuff, like “Ranpo-san the red man is coming for you run-“ or “Kyouka it’s gonna eat you because you’re chocolate, hide in the cabinets.” It’s hilarious. aw yea being multilingual can sometimes be a curse but it’s good i guess?? dont give yourself such a hard time for not knowing other languages!! as long as youre respectful to other people and dont mock their accents speaking your language (which im sure you already do) then youre gucci
