Juste un petit mot en passant parce qu’en cherchant à lire un roman ou des nouvelles de la grande Antonia Susan Byatt, aka A.S. Byatt (il paraît qu’elle détestait qu’on dise ses prénoms), je me suis aperçue qu’elle était morte en novembre dernier. C’est passé complètement sous mes radars, et je suis vraiment triste d’apprendre cette nouvelle car j’ai pour elle une immense admiration. Pour tout vous dire, elle écrit un de mes livres préférés au monde : Le livre des enfants, que j’ai lu en 2011. Quelle merveille. Je le relirai, c’est sûr.

Elle était très érudite. Une dame de lettres anglaise, pleine d’esprit et de fantaisie, qui avait un don pour raconter les histoires, et les truffer de détails historiquement vrais et pertinents. Dans Le livre des enfants, elle recrée l’Angleterre victorienne au tournant du XIXe siècle, le socialisme naissant transmis par le mouvement des Arts & Crafts de William Morris, la féerie de l’amour de la beauté de l’époque, les sursauts féministes, jusqu’à la Première Guerre Mondiale, cruel point final au récit éblouissant.

Elle a aussi écrit des récits courts poétiques et assez vifs, dont des contes noirs, qui m’ont aussi beaucoup marquée, ainsi que des Anges et des Insectes, adapté fadement au cinéma. Possession lui a fait remporter le Booker Prize, mais ce n’est pas mon préféré, sans doute trop érudit pour moi, un peu trop ampoulé, un peu trop ardu.

Je replonge ce soir dans ses pages, celle du recueil Le Djinn dans l’œil-de-Rossignol, qui paraît-il, est un hommage -à sa façon - aux Mille et Une Nuits. Les premières pages sont déjà éblouissantes. Quel esprit brillant et original…

The writer and critic AS Byatt, who explored family, myth and narrative in a career spanning six decades, has died aged 87. Her publisher Chatto & Windus confirmed that she died peacefully at home surrounded by close family.

Dame Antonia Susan Duffy, who wrote under the name AS Byatt, authored complex and critically acclaimed novels, including the Booker prize-winning Possession and her examination of artistic creation, The Children’s Book. Over her career, she won a swathe of literary awards, from the Booker to a Chevalier of France’s Order of Arts and Letters.

“We mourn her loss but it’s a comfort to know that her penetrating works will dazzle, shine and refract in the minds of readers for generations to come,” said her publisher Clara Farmer.
