Mako Hayashi (OC)
This has been a drawing I wanted to post at some point, but never had the chance to. Just for clarification, this drawing took MONTHS to make. Drawing digitally isn't as easy as drawing traditionally.
Coincidentally, today - or at least yesterday - marked the 20th anniversary of Animax Asia - one of Animax's commonly known international channels. I still fondly remember seeing Continuity videos of it. Naturally, It'll be appropriate to commemorate the channel's two decade-long history via this drawing of Mako Hayashi, an original character I made based on Animax and it's oversea subsidiaries.

Yesterday I learned that the entirety of Cardcaptor Sakura is on Netflix. It’s the Animax dub (which I learned today that there are 4 English dubs of this series. I’ve now, counting this one, seen three. Nelvana’s dub is what got me into the series, I’ve seen Funimation’s dub of the Clear Card episodes, but I have yet to see the Bang! Zoom dub). I have mixed feelings about it, 10 episodes in.
Points in this dub's favor- They don't hide the fact that the series does, in fact, take place in Japan. So there's no name changes, no erasure of kanji, and no 'this is totally a cheeseburger and not a pork bun'. Also, it uses the music from the original, which I love.
Points less in this dub's favor- The name pronunciations are hit-or-miss. In the case of ‘Sakura’, it’s a miss entirely. No one knows how to say it in this dub.
Points I’m conflicted about- This dub has a very small cast. Like...there’s 7 or 8 people doing all the voices. On the one hand, it’s impressive. On the other, it definitely shows in some places. For example, Yukito and Syaoran. They’re voiced by the same actress (who also voices Nadeshiko, Naoko, Mizuki, Ruby Moon, and the shop owner from the Jump card episode). And they sound practically the same. Both were given a vaguely New York accent, though Syaoran’s voice is more gritty because he is a smol and angry bean.
Overall? I give it an 8/10. It’s not perfect, but it’s good.
