Loontics Unleashed: Tunnel Vision
The latest band climbing up the charts in Acemtropolis, they are one of the first non-human bands to gain recognition (as well as notoriety) in recent years after winning a record label with Acme Records in 2068.
They're technically a rock band, though they tend to explore genres.
They are scheduled to preform at the 2774 Basherball Championship halftime show, despite the more recent threats sent to them.
Lore Below:

send me a number 1-100 for a little tasw blurb!!
for @icegirl2772 - song 7: funeral grey by waterparks :)
tw: mentions underage smoking + drinking
Big Time Rush's first album wrap party was supposed to be a blast... At least that's what Gustavo and Kelly had promised them before throwing one of the lamest get-togethers the boys had ever been to.
Though discouraging, it was nothing the boys couldn't handle. With a brilliant, yet hair-brained, scheme, they managed to convince their boss to end the party at Rocque Records for the other executives at the label earlier than he had planned. By the time the entire building was clear, the four managed to transform the studio floor into a club-type atmosphere that suited their needs far better.
Throwing a party in Los Angeles was never a challenge. All the boys had to do was invite every contact on their phone and tell them to bring a plus one, and in no time, the floor was packed to the brim with friends and strangers, dancing the night away.
Sure, Gustavo would probably kill them in the morning, but that was the last thing on James' mind as he grabbed a red cup from someone he thought might live on the same floor as him at the Palm Woods and downed it with a large gulp. A few more of those and he wouldn't be worrying about their boss at all.
As he pushed through a crowd of people who had turned the lounge into a second dance floor, he searched the sea of faces to try and find his bandmates. It was their party anyway, he should probably spend some of the time there with them, instead of trying to find a cute person to pull into the supply closet and fool around with.
It was a tough decision, maybe even tougher than finding three people somewhere on the floor of Rocque Records, and he took another drink from a girl who was definitely in his class at the Palm Woods school to help him think.
Whatever was in this cup was far better than the last, so he stopped in his tracks and savored his first few sips leading him to spot Kendall, Carlos, and Logan hugging the wall of the long hallway leading to the elevator.
Ugh, so lame... The boy thought, taking another sip as he pushed past even more people to get to his friends. Each of them took turns glancing at the elevator as they talked to each other, something too loud to hear over the blasting music, which told him they were still waiting for people to arrive. This is a party, no time for standing around!
Logan startled when James placed a hand on his shoulder, causing a few drops of the drink he was slowly nursing to jump out of his cup and onto the dark carpet. "Jesus, dude! Way to scare a guy..."
"Come dance with me!" James called, needing to raise his voice over the insane noise level of the party in order to be even slightly understood. "Show off those moves Mr. X taught you!"
Playfully, he raised his arms above his head and wiggled his hips around to the beat of the pop tune coming over the speakers, watching as Kendall rolled his eyes and Carlos looked over to the elevator one more time.
"Nah..." His blond friend chimed in as he took a slow sip from his plastic Solo. "Waiting on someone way prettier than you to dance with."
The long-haired boy let out an offended scoff and was about to rip right into the band's front man when the elevator let out a soft ding and the doors opened to a small group of girls.
Camille, Jo, and Stephanie were laughing at something, and a new girl James didn't recognize was standing in the middle of them, a smug look on her face as she listened to her friends' voices ring out around her.
"Um... Who's that?" He asked openly, figuring one of the boys might know, but Carlos just shook his head. He was having a hard time keeping his eyes off of Stephanie.
As the helmet-wearer waved them over, he replied, "I don't know... Steph mentioned she just moved to town. Her dad's in a band or something."
James knew it was rude to stare, but there was something about her he just couldn't put his finger on as she trailed behind the other three, effortlessly sliding into conversation with the band and their girlfriends as if she had known them her entire life.
Besides the fact she was exactly his type, the first thing he noticed was the slight twang in her voice as she spoke, like she had spent a lot of time in the Southern United States. It clashed with his friends' Midwest accents, which she must have thought were cute as she scrunched her nose when Logan overannunciated his ohs. The second thing was a bit harder for him to understand; This new girl had quite strange taste in clothing.
They were in the middle of a Los Angeles summer, with one of the hottest heat waves the country had ever seen right around the corner. The dark Doc Martins adding about four more inches to her height looked incredibly heavy, and the skinny black jeans covering her legs must have been so suffocating, especially in such a crowded space. Either she didn't care or she pretended not to notice, tossing a lock of her long hair over her shoulder to show off the grey sweater adorning the top half of her body. It was baggy, but not too baggy, effortlessly sliding off the side of her right shoulder.
Taking another sip of his drink, James pretended not to notice the way her eyes sparkled under the low lights he and the band had hastily hung up or think about all the things he could do to the small patch of exposed skin around her neck, collarbone, and shoulder.
Maybe I've had just a bit too much... He thought as he raised the cup to his lips before thinking again and lowering it.
"What about you, pretty boy?"
The drawl of her words nearly sent his knees buckling; Too absorbed in his own little world to have been a part of the conversation the rest of the group had been having.
James blinked a few times, looking down at the newcomer who had asked him a question he had no clue what the answer to might be. "Hm?"
She blinked right back, reaching out and taking the cup from his hand. "All your other friends asked me a question so I suppose it's your turn now."
It was impossible to tear his eyes away from her as she brought the cup to her lips and took a small sip, winking right at him.
In a poorly disguised panic, his gaze flipped between his bandmates who weren't even trying to conceal their laughter. They knew better than anyone what it looked like when he got lost in his own thoughts, but none of them helped him out as the new girl awaited his response.
The boy felt his head begin to spin, be it from the sudden attention from the new girl he was trying to bask in or the cheap drinks he had been downing all night. "Um... What's your favorite color?"
Without a second thought, New Girl pointed to her waist before tugging on the fabric of her sweater. It reminded him of one of the shades his mom had picked out for the packaging of one of her cosmetic products from a few years back.
Funeral Grey...
Head still spinning, James felt himself stop breathing as she took another sip from his cup. There was a faint trace of her lipstick on the white rim, so he focused on that with a stupid giggle he wasn't able to contain.
That meant he was nervous, but he wasn't able to stop the next words from pouring out of his mouth, "That's not a color... That's a shade."
He watched as her jaw dropped - truly shocked by his words or feigning surprise to rile him up. Either way, he didn't think too much of it. If she looked that cute with wide eyes and puffing cheeks, he'd continue to correct her all night.
"Don't disagree with me!"
And just like that, she walked away, getting lost in the crowd of people surrounding them, celebrating the release of Big Time Rush's first album.
The focus of the party was supposed to be on them, but now, James had shifted all his attention to her.
Her... What's her name?
***
James knew it was a mistake to keep his eyes on her all night.
With a clouded mind, he did his best to keep track of everyone she talked to, every place of the studio she explored, each song she knew all the words to... Until he watched as she slipped into one of the conference rooms on the studio floor without any of her girlfriends.
Hot girl... Empty room... No distractions...
He physically shook the thought out of his head. It would be weird to follow her inside, right?
Yes! His brain told him.
No! His heart screamed.
So, he waited a few moments to see if she'd come back out and when she didn't he hesitantly made his way to the door.
If this was a knocking situation, he didn't really know, but with a shaking hand, he turned the sliver door knob and stepped into the room.
Embarrassingly, it took him a second to find her in the large space. Instead of sitting in one of the plush chairs or snooping around the presentation podium, she was pressed up against the large glass windows overlooking the city.
He thought it was strange at first until he felt a small rush of warm night air coupled with the smokey smell of tobacco from the cigarette she held between two of her fingers.
Lazily, she took a small drag, and he turned his focus from her lips to the fiery colors burning at the end of the paper. Exhaling, she blew the smoke straight out the window before saying, "I was beginning to wonder how long it'd take you to find me."
Once again, he wasn't able to think about his words as he pushed out a strained, "That shit is gonna kill you."
That hadn't been what he wanted to say at all. New Girl had practically told him point-blank she wanted to be alone with him and instead of a typical suave response, all he could do was reprimand her for smoking.
She kind of smiled, it was hard to tell in the low light, but he swore he saw her raise her hand and curl her front finger, beckoning him over to where she was standing.
James knew he walked over there as fast as humanly possible, but for a moment, he felt as light as the air he was breathing, like he had practically floated over to her.
One more hit, but this time, she took her free hand and balled it in the soft fabric of the t-shirt he wore.
At the same time, his breath hitched as he let her pull him down into her, closing his eyes and slightly tilting his head as he leaned in...
Only for her to blow the puff of smoke she had been holding right into his face.
Her kind of smile turned into a full-on grin once his eyes shot open, slightly coughing from the inhalation he hadn't been expecting.
"Well, now you're gonna die too."
The boy felt his heart skip a beat. Now she's teasing me back... I am so fucked.
"Tell me, what's a girl gotta do to get another drink around here?"
"Put out her cigarette, for one." James bit right back, still smelling the earthy, rich smoke curling in his nostrils. "But, if she says please it might buy her some more time to finish it while I get something for her."
That made sense, I think. He was a bit too buzzed to tell.
In front of him, the girl tilted her head in thought, hand still balled in his shirt.
When she had finally made her decision, she let him go as she looked up at him, batting her eyes a few times. "Get me another drink, James... Please? I might have a surprise for you when you get back."
He thought about leaning in and kissing her right then and there. Instead, all he could do was nod before making his way to the door as if he would obey her every command.
Just as he reached for the handle, he looked back at her, loving the way she still smiled at him, even as she went in for another drag.
How does she know my name?
A few seconds later, he realized he was at a party celebrating the release of his boy band's album... Of course, she knew his name.
That's not cocky... Right?
"Oh, um," He called out absentmindedly, not sure how to ask her the question lingering on his mind. "What's your-"
She didn't let him finish before she said, "Roxanne."
"Roxanne." James tested, languishing in the few moments the sounds rolled off his tongue.
Roxanne nodded, flicking the stray ashes accumulating on the paper through the window.
"Just hold on tight, baby, I'll be right back."
He left the room far too quickly after his comment to watch the way her cheeks reddened as she pinched out her cigarette.
Thank God we threw this party tonight.

[INTERVIEW] Kai - 230315 British GQ: “EXO's Kai on freeing himself from his legacy in new album Rover “
"Following 2020's self-titled debut and 2021s Peaches, EXO's main dancer and K-pop ace is back.
In the run-up to the release of his third album Rover, Kai released a set of promotional images dressed as an angel, complete with a pair of plump, white feathered wings. With signature abs on show in low-slung jeans, the 29-year-old's angular features are softened by frosted glitter and his dark hair is combed down over his forehead in a boyish mop. The next day, he dropped a second lot of pictures in the same ethereal garb, but with an altogether eerier vibe. Less youthful, his gelled hair, sunken eyes and bleached eyebrows gave the appearance of something unearthly, like a fallen angel haunted by his own demise.
“It’s not easy to show two sides of myself within one concept," Kai, whose real name is Kim Jongin, says over a video call from Seoul. It's typical of the softly-spoken star, whose eyes often get lost in the corners of the room as he answers questions, though ironic considering the concept of duality has followed him like a shadow for more than a decade. Since his debut as the lithe dancer of record-breaking group EXO in 2012, it’s a term that's been used to describe his ease in inhabiting a whole new personality on stage.
“I really like the image [of] the wings,” he reflects, adding that the core theme of the album is about being unburdened by pressure and seeking a freedom that “depends solely on those wings”. Rather than leaning back on the past, and all the ways that he has been split apart, Rover is a re-introduction of Kai as a multifaceted whole.
To know Kai now is to know Jongin, who, to anyone who was only aware of him as a performer (first in EXO, then later SuperM and as a solo star), might feel more like his alter-ego than the other way around. Where Kai can oscillate effortlessly between an intrinsic sensuality, Herculean power and threatening intensity, Jongin remains steadfast in his gentle demeanour. When we speak, his hair is dyed icy blonde and he sits in the meeting room of his record label, SM Entertainment, with the slightly curled-in posture of someone still not totally used to being alone in the hot seat. “I didn’t want to be too stubborn about a specific genre”, he says about the 6-track R&B album, adding, “I thought about portraying varying genres, performances and music through Kai.” He speaks of Kai less like the stage persona he’s inhabited since the age of 18, and more like a vessel, the ornamental shell that houses him as an artist.
Through the music video for the record’s eponymous, reggaeton-tinged lead single, he explores that idea literally. He acts out a spy-like scenario that sees him burn through fake IDs with false names and headshots of past eras, before landing on one in the here and now with the pseudonym Elliot Billy. It’s a pointed reference to the inspiration of his childhood ballerino ambitions, the first stepping stone in his lifelong love of movement. In a final set-piece, like some multiversal glitch, his backing dancers cut between balaclava-ed breakdancers and tutu-ed ballerinas, a glimpse of Jongin through Kai.
“I have always felt that, especially with a job like this, I do tend to pay attention to how other people see me, and to what they talk about," he says. "But even within that, I make an effort to find what I want to do and what I like. And doing this, I think, really is freedom." Letting go of preconceptions may not seem like a radical act, but in an industry as cutthroat as K-pop, forging your own path requires an enormous amount of self-belief.
“These days, through social media, it’s easy to look into people’s lives right?” he continues. “We keep doing that, and then one day, instead of focussing on what you truly treasure and like, you start worrying about how other people think and start following what others like. So I worked on this album with the hope that, by breaking away from such things, I would find true freedom. And I think I want to be like that [in real life] as well.”
What does freedom in real life look like to Kai? It starts, first and foremost, with being present. It’s dedicating time to the things he enjoys, and the mundanities that form his daily rituals. “Happiness can be considered trivial,” he says. “It’s just doing what you like. [But] I do think that feeling happiness within the smallest of things might be true happiness. But just to feel that little something, I think you need to put in a lot of effort.” He admits that the goalposts move each year in terms of what brings him joy, but right now, it’s simplicity. “These days I use public transport a lot, or I walk a lot. I try to just let time pass by.”
Over the last decade, Kai has become one of high-fashion’s biggest players, going from brand darling to official Gucci muse, complete with a 2021 capsule collection designed around his signature teddy bear motif, in just a few short years. Despite the osmosis of curation, however, he personally prefers to go with the flow. “I really change my style often according to my moods – my hair colour, my mood that day, or even just the order in which my clothes were hung [in the closet]. So even when I go out, I never plan my outfits beforehand,” he says. The closet he casually mentions is, conservatively, about the size of a small flat (as well as a separate wardrobe in his bedroom just for pyjama sets: “I also think that’s one of the best things I’ve done,” he chuckles proudly) and packed to the rafters with designer goods he refuses to take the tags off for fear he might need to sell them one day.
For Kai, the upcoming milestone of 11 years in the industry with EXO is momentous, considering so few of their early contemporaries have reached it. The unit is still one of the most successful groups in history, amassing an early and lasting fandom that is exceptional even in the current era, where standom reigns supreme. Still, 2012 looks a lot different to 2023, especially when that t spreads from early adulthood to the advent of your thirties. So would Kai, knowing what he does now, give his younger self any advice? “You’re doing a great job. So just keep doing what you’re doing”, he says after a moment of shy consideration. He takes the task seriously, speaking in hushed tones to be gentle with his former self. “This is what I want to tell him because I am quite satisfied with how things are now, and I feel like the past 10 years are what made the Kai of today.”
After a brief pause, he nods as if proud of being able to say it. “I really like the Jongin that I am right now.”
Rover is just the start of a busy 2023. Next comes a long-anticipated reunion with EXO. While the group have maintained a mercurial structure of sorts, this year offers a brief reprieve where none of the members are in the military. “All the members are gathering after a really long time, so we are really looking forward to the fact that we can put out another album too,” he says, revealing that prep work has already begun.
“We are not that worried about what the results of this comeback would bring, or what goal we need to achieve," he says. "I’m really looking forward to this year. I think that there will be more happy memories that will remain, so much so that we may even forget the older [happy] memories. I want the fans to know this as well.”
While EXO's return is at the forefront of his mind, he's got other adventures on his mind, too. “One of the biggest goals in my life is living in London for a year. It’s my main goal,” he says, echoing a statement he’s repeated for years now. “The weather is bad,” I tell him as I point to the gloomy view out my window in possibly the most glaring example of British pessimism I can inadvertently muster. But even before the translator can jump in he shakes his hands and says he doesn’t mind. What it is about the city that’s captured his fancy for so long is unclear. Maybe it’s the culture, steeped in musical history like his icon David Bowie, whose portrait hangs pride of place in his home. Or maybe it’s his beloved Chelsea FC, the football team he devotes his time to and, by his own admission, helps him understand the nature of his own fandom. “I believe that you’re a true fan when you’re supporting them even when they’re not doing well. I’ve learnt from how my fans have shown me love. So as a dear fan, I will cheer for Chelsea,” he says, sighing and downtrodden. He cradles his head in his hands to stifle an embarrassed giggle, a gesture instantly recognisable to anyone who has ever longed to be asked to talk about their obsessions but simultaneously dreaded that they might actually have to do it.
If the first 11 years of Kai as an artist have been about figuring out how much of himself to give the world, the release of Rover and beyond kick off a future where those boundaries hopefully hold less importance. Kai is happy for the world to know Kim Jongin, especially as that exterior softens over time. “My dream is to do all this as much as possible,” he says, his eyes fixed firmly on the camera like the rituals of a pact. “And for as long as I can.””

Kaos - "Top Secret" What? Stuff Song released in 1980. Compilation released in 1990. Punk Rock / Hardcore Punk
Plays: 6.6K+ on Spotify // 8.2K+ on YouTube
Alright, so, in order to fully contextualize this gem, we're gonna have to go all the way back to 1977, because that's the year that saw the release of the Los Angeles punk scene's first ever record, The Germs' iconic and aptly titled "Forming." That little, deeply impactful 7-inch came out on a small, yet ultimately indispensable label called What? Records, which later sold its name to a Christian label and then resumed as Iloki, a Hawaiian-sounding name that didn't mean anything in the Hawaiian language itself, but instead cleverly reflected the attitude of its owner Chris Ashford—"I, low-key"—as he transitioned his business into a surf rock and surf punk outfit.
But long before the name change and soon after that Germs record were a few more seminal LA punk releases by bands that, like the Germs, had also been fixtures at Los Angeles' very first punk rock club, The Masque, too. These were The Dils' "I Hate the Rich," a split 7-inch EP by Eyes, Controllers, and The Skulls called "Don't Talk to Me" / "(The Original) Neutron Bomb" / "Victims," and another 7-inch by Controllers simply titled "Neutron Bomb."
And it's those Controllers who are really key here, because after putting out "Neutron Bomb" in '78 and then another 7-inch in '79 on the Beverly Hills-based Siamese Records called "Slow Boy," they disbanded. Frontman Johnny Stingray had been playing bass in the band for the past year, and while he didn't really mind that, he had also come into possession of a sweet, new Ibanez Les Paul guitar too, and he simply wanted to rock out on that damn thing. So in late '79 he formed a new group called Kaos, which he could lead on both vocals and guitar, and he enlisted his bassist girlfriend, Amy Wichmann, her guitarist pal, Lisa Adams, and on drums was none other than beloved San Jose garage and psych group The Chocolate Watchband's Pete Curry too?!? 😮
1980 would then see Kaos put out their only record, a three-song 7-inch on What? called Product of a Sick Mind, which contained a great second track on it called "Top Secret." And this is one that simply fulfilled Johnny Stingray's wish to be front and center in a band of his own making. Plus, it's a song that, despite turning 44 this year, has still managed to maintain every ounce of the raucous punk rock edge that it originally started with.
And there's really just something about so many of these early punk rock tunes in general, whether they be by The Stooges or MC5 in Detroit who started it all, The Sex Pistols over in the UK, or any of LA's own first wave crop, that just still, remarkably, have this timelessly cool and rebellious sound to them, and I don't think that you can really say the same for too many other genres. I mean, think about other types of music that were once also ridiculed as being infernal, demonic racket: rock & roll, jazz, hip hop; all of their first records, while they might still sound nice, are all so tame and quaint by today's standards. But a whole lot of early punk rock records have not suffered from that same level of tarnishing yet, and at this point, it doesn't really seem like they ever will.
The nice thing about punk rock, as well as its antecedent of garage rock, is that it saw rock music advancing and expanding towards uncharted levels of refined, insufferable snobbery, and it effectively then said, "nah, fuck all that, we're going back to the original spirit of this music, which is that feather-ruffling, rabble-rousing, dangerous type shit." And to its own credit, despite pretty much anyone having the ability to play in a punk band, those early days of punk rock generated some absolute gold that still more than holds up to this very day, and this little song by the ultimately fleeting Kaos, "Top Secret," which doesn't really have very many plays on either Spotify or YouTube, is just one of many.
Also on Spotify, but credited to the Controllers.
And here's a post I made about an Iloki comp that was put out in 1987 and has some really good surf stuff on it too!

Paul Russell, P1Harmony, GUNNAR, Charlieonnafriday, (G)I-DLE & Teddy Swims – Jingle Ball Village 2023 – KIA Forum – Los Angeles, CA – December 1, 2023
It’s a rarity to hear roaring cheering while you’re still on your way to the concert venue. However, enthusiastic fans showed up strong for iHeartRadio 102.7 KIIS FM’s 2023 Jingle Ball Pre-Show — some even traveling from different countries and lining up since 5AM in order to catch a glimpse of their favorite artists on stage.
The annual pre-Jingle Ball event enlists the top up-and-coming artists to conduct a Q&A or perform on stage for a dedicated crowd full of fans.
Tumblr media
Powerhouse vocalist Teddy Swims took to the stage first — serenading the audience with his soulful vocals that allowed for his raw talent to shine through. While Swims initially gained notoriety by uploading cover songs of classic hits onto YouTube in 2019, it didn’t take long for him to be signed to a label and grow on a massive global scale. Yet, he hasn’t forgotten his sincere appreciation for his fans, saying genuine thanks for coming out to see him sing.
Tumblr media
To maintain the exciting momentum, K-pop girl group (G)I-DLE then came onto the stage for a special Q&A. Their incredible stage presence, ranging from striking their best badass poses to getting the fans to sing their hits, made everyone go wild. They freshly completed their second worldwide tour, the “I Am Free-ty World Tour,” spanning 18 countries this year, where they highlighted their meticulous choreography and catchy pop tunes.
Tumblr media
Next up was up-and-comer, charlieonnafriday, a rising hip-hop songwriter that quickly amassed a dedicated fanbase on social media with his talent. His captivating energy on stage was apparent as he seamlessly switched between upbeat and more mellow songs that displayed his musical versatility as an artist. He recently was seen opening for Tate McRae’s “Are We Flying” tour and is embarking on his own European tour in April 2024.
Tumblr media
Hitting the stage afterwards was California native, GUNNAR, a pop-rock newcomer that has nailed how to command the audience’s attention. He started his set by immediately launching off of the drum platform, jettisoning a few feet into the air all while strumming chords on his electric guitar. The energy for the rest of his set only increased from there. GUNNAR most recently opened for Maroon 5’s sold-out tour across Europe and the U.K.
Tumblr media
South Korean boy band, P1Harmony, then proceeded to take the stage amidst a sea of diehard fans who raised up their handmade signs and threw up hearts with their fingers for their favorite group member. With their energetic and catchy tunes sung effortlessly by the group, accompanied by their impeccable dance moves in perfect sync, it’s no surprise P1Harmony has garnered such a large global fanbase with their talent.
Tumblr media
Closing out the pre-Jingle Ball show was rapper and singer-songwriter Paul Russell, the ever-exuberant and charming performer that keeps you smiling throughout the entire performance. His energy impressively matched that of the crowd, as he delightfully ran across the stage to engage with all sides of the audience and invited everyone to sing along to the chorus of his songs. Russell first skyrocketed into the public eye when the snippet of his song, “Lil Boo Thang” went viral on TikTok in the summer of 2023. Since then, he was signed to Arista Records and has continued to release songs that infuse a mix of funk, pop, R&B, and hip-hop.
Keep your eye out for the 2024 Jingle Ball Pre-Show lineup for more opportunities to catch incredible emerging artists like these!

꒰⠀⠀⠀⠀chloe bailey.   24.   non-binary.   they/she/he.⠀⠀⠀⠀꒱        hold your f*** horses !   jasmine “jazzy” banks   has just been spotted walking into revolution headquarters. they are best known for being the   vocalist  in   sovereign   and have been signed with the label for five years.   they share a lot of interesting things about life in the music industry on their social media, so make sure you don’t forget to follow them at   @jazzybanks.  fans know them for being   self-centered  but i swear they’ve got a   hardworking   side as well. maybe that explains why they’re always associated with   sequined body suits and big fur coats,  late nights in the studio laying down vocals, and  wilted roses.   stan twitter even voted them most likely to   drop the f bomb on live tv.   we’ll see how they live up to that reputation.

QUICK FIRE!
full name: jasmine simone banks preferred name: jazzy nicknames: jaz, simon , tenacious age: 24 ( twenty-three) d.o.b. : september 5th 1999 hometown: la county gender: non-binary pronouns: they/ she / he occupation: vocalist in sovereign education: los angeles city college
Tumblr media
BRIEF BIO
• born in la county california to aaliyah banks and marcus wright. their mother was quite young when she had them just barely finished with highschool. though despite that she had no regrets about carrying a child. she saw jasmine as a gift. • jazzy's father marcus was wrongfully accused of possesion of illegal substances. the wrong place at the wrong time. while he maintained his innocence he wound up going to jail when jazzy was around five years old. • in the ten years that followed jazzy was raised alone by their mother aailyah. aaliyah often worked two jobs to keep them both afloat the whole time never losing hope that the two of them would be able to see marcus as a free man. • during the time that marcus was jailed and aaliyah raising them alone she had found solace in religion, it is through that jazzy found their love of singing and music. • from the age of ten she began singing gospel. from their jazzy also looked into their mother's old records and found music from the greats such as aretha franklin & tina turner. they also grew to love 90s acts with tlc & en vogue becoming their favorites. • eventually by the time jazzy was fifteen their father marcus was freed from jail and the family briefly reunited for a short period of time. just a few months after marcus was freed aaliyah dies in a tragic car accident. • this leaves jazzy gutted and the rest of their remaining teenage years under the car of their father marcus. marcus tries his best to atone for his past and it is during these years jazzy sees that their father is not the man their mother said he was. he had changed a lot within a decade. • after completing two years of an associate's degree at los angeles city college jazzy hears of a singing competition. at their father's urging they audition and wind up as a member of sovereign.
Tumblr media
SOVEREIGN
when jazzy met the girls of sovereign it was clear to them that there was already a close bond between the two members emmy and ximena. though that didn't seem to bother them much. they tried to get on with everyone as best as they could. it was slow couple of months in the beginning, trying to fathom that they were no longer trying to compete against each other as solo artists in a competition but rather as a group. things looked up for the girls and eventually they wound up signed with revolution records.
two full studio albums later and a third arriving soon thereafter came some ugly drama and feuding between the members. it was a tumultous time which eventually resulted in the departure of the fourth member of the group and for them to continue on a three piece. after taking a well deserved three month break from recording and the public eye to heal from the aftermath it was back to the studio for the fourth album. the passing of ximena's grandmother was sudden and lead to the album being halted to give them all time to process things.
during that time jazzy finds themselves flying back out to la to spend some time with their father. truthfully there was a part of them was tired with the seemingly endless amount of drama that came with being part of the band. though perhaps the music made it worth it. soon enough the trio wind up regrouping in new york in an effort to finally finish that fourth album that was delayed after so long.
Tumblr media
HEADCANONS & FAST FACTS !
• if they weren't a vocalist in sovereign jazzy would likely be a lawyer striving to change the system within the system.
• jazzy is percieved as being arrogant and selfish. but perhaps that's their way of keeping other people at arm's length.
• they're quite difficult to get to know and generally doesn't like to dwell on the past too much. rather they're someone who'd rather move on and get things over with.
• jazzy's idea of their own gender is generally quite fluid, however in terms of labels they identify with the non-binary label as they see themselves as not fitting within the cis binaries
• although jazzy will accept any pronouns they usually refer and default to they/them.
• during the time where sovereign was on a three month break jazzy learned electric guitar. they got inspired by slash of guns & roses.
• jazzy owns a doberman pinscher
Tumblr media
WANTED CONNECTIONS !
• haters- any fans or people who generally don't like jazzy. believe that they don't deserve to be in sovereign. possibly blame them for the departure of their fourth member. they're definitely not the publics favorite.
• ride or die- at times jazzy can feel left out mainly due to how close the other two are. perhaps they can have a person like that for them. someone who sticks by them and who jazzy feels they can trust in confide in.
• rivals - someone who is jealous of jazzy's sucess? possibly a fellow musician in the label. these two characters never seem to get along. when they're both in the room together it will implode.
• other ideas? - any other ideas you can come up with while reading jazzy's bio i am all ears.

The Noise
Live Review, with Muck & The Mires & Prime Movers, Church, January 11, 2008
The three-piece (with no bass) My Own Worst Enemy plays Snowflake, my favorite song of theirs, early on, and I question how they will be able to build their set. Steve goes from a sales pitch for their CDs to a "if you dont know me and want a CD, I'll give it to you (free)." They get rocking when they hit their Ramones-like Come On and Steve gets extra aggressive on Hey Hey Sunshine. Then it's Sue's turn to release testosterone in Pay Attention to Me. A.J. grabs the spotlight for the elongated drum intro of Turn It On. They definitely were able to bring the set to a peak, even with Snowflake up front. They end with the Clash's Police on my Back, and though it's typical of original bands to end with a cover, MOWE's own material is more exciting to hear. (T Max)

Live/CD Review, 2008
I saw MY OWN WORST ENEMY at a Nancy Neon show in Boston at the Cantab Lounge. Before they went on, she said to me, "You're really going to like them!" She was right. They are a strong trio of two guitars (no bass) and drums. While the songs on their third CD, Total Action (Pristine Indigo Records, c/o myownworstenemy.net) written by either guitarist (Sue or Steve), most of the vocal focus is on Sue. I remember Steve singing as much as Sue live, and as with her, he does admirable work here. I could throw out descriptive words like indie, garage, folk rock, alternative, and they would all be accurate as influences, but MOWE (as those in the know refer to them) have taken all of that and created something else that works for them. It's hard to pick out a fave song since both Sue and Steve write songs that are memorable with good (non-cheesy) hooks. The CD opens with a powerful drumbeat by AJ. In various parts of the release, AJ also aptly lays down a harmonica. Some of the standouts include "Turn It On", "Green Apple", "Catherine the Waitress", "Drunken Angel", and a strong and sparse cover of Patti Smith's "Redondo Beach". (Robert Barry Francos)

Total Action CD Review, July 2008
The guitar/guitar/drum trio My Own Worst Enemy was inspired by Sleater-Kinney to become a bass-less band. But whereas that band was most often a noisy outfit, this group alternates between loud rock and softer folk. Total Action, though always active, moves at various speeds and levels throughout.
You can tell a lot about a group simply by examining the songs they choose to cover. In this case, MOWE takes on works by two of America's best female songwriters. The first is "Drunken Angel," a sad tale about a brilliant, alcoholic Texas musician, penned by Lucinda Williams. The second is "Redondo Beach," by punk-poetess Patti Smith. Each of these tunes features guitarist/vocalist Sue's authoritative vocals.
Nevertheless, MOWE is by no means its own rival when it comes to original material. The peppy "Catherine the Waitress" is particularly memorable for its harmonica part. Guitarist/vocalist Steve also sings some of these songs, and he comes off like a weary psychedelic rocker during the especially mellow "Snowflake". Both singers reveal their softer side via the regretful "Corner of my Eye", which is highlighted by a beautifully twang-y electric guitar solo.
At times, Total Action feels like a spirited garage rock offering. This is especially so with "Come On". The track rides atop handclapped rhythms and loose, but enthusiastic, vocals. Other times, as with "Drunken Angel", alt.country is the label that immediately comes to mind. Oddly enough, however, this group is from Boston, which - while certainly famous for its dirty water – is not especially known for its country music roots.
This band also deserves extra credit for choosing a wonderful name. Isn't it sometimes the case in love and romance where we are our own worst enemies? How many times have we been jealous without cause? And aren't we simply selfish by nature? Thus, this moniker is like the description of us all. While we're quick to point fingers and blame, when things go wrong, more often than not, it's our own darn fault.
My Own Worst Enemy is the sort of group I can easily imagine on stage at Coachella. The act's music appeals to fans of singer/songwriters; albeit, ones with strongly beating rock & roll hearts. The decision to cover both Patti Smith and Lucinda Williams reveals great taste. But, as the old commercial used to say: "Starkist doesn't want tuna with good taste. Starkist wants tuna that tastes good." And with this effort, My Own Worst Enemy shows off great taste while all the while tasting delicious. (Dan MacIntosh)

Total Action CD Review, August 2008
On the latest full-length release from this excellent trio, rumbling toms and drama-building feedback immediately set the stage - you are about to be rocked. The rocking is accomplished without needing a bass guitar, by Steve on guitar wizardry and vocals, Sue on rhythm guitar and sinewy lead vocals and A.J. of the killer drums.
The lead track, "Turn it On" forms a powerful one-two punch with "Used to Be a Fighter," the record's standout second song. Harmonica makes an appearance on Total Action, as does piano, and assorted electronic touches, but this is a guitar record, full of lean, muscular six-string hooks and strong-willed melodies. When the band eases up on the fourth track, another standout, "Green Apple," the result is equally affecting; no matter the tempo, the result is strong without being surly, and honest without being contrived. The honesty of the songs may owe itself to the fact that the band recorded Total Action largely live over three long weekends in Vermont. Recording that way at Pete Weiss's cavernous Verdant Studios, MOWE makes Total Action hang together like a real record rather than a collection of songs.
Much like their music, the band maximizes the effect of its vocals, without doctoring them up, by adding subtle harmonies to Sue's leads, having Steve and Sue alternate verses, and changing up lead vocal duties and arrangements from song to song.
From first song to last, a primitive power-chord rendition of Patti Smith's "Redondo Beach," Total Action is true to its title. (Chris Gorham)

Electric Like The Moon CD Review, October 2011
Bad romance, late nights out, the intersection of love and squalor...That's traditionally the stuff of great rock and roll, and it's the territory My Own Worst Enemy inhabits with this album, which makes good on the promise of their last few years of heartfelt live shows. By now they've found a sound that isn't quite garage, or pop, or alt-country or psychedelic, but they can call on all of it when a song demands. And the songwriting is definitely the point here, as Sue and Steve's tunes and lyrics key into the joys and dramas of a life in bohemia. This band knows and loves its Boston roots, covering Tribe's previously-uncoverable "Abort" (one of three outside surprises here) and dedicating "The Kids Don't Care" to a certain keeper of the local flame. Electric Like the Moon doesn't sound like some old-school throwback, but it does take you back to the days when a night in clubland was a true adventure, and the bands didn't mind trying to change your life just a little.

TELL ME THIS - SONS OF SILVER
Tumblr media
Los Angeles-based Sons of Silver plans to release a taste of what’s to come from their upcoming new album Runaway Emotions slated for release in the spring. “Tell Me This” to be released on February 2. “Tell Me This” opens with a winding Johnny Thunders-esque guitar solo, a Stones-like fury, and a lyrical nod to the Smiths. Vocalist and guitarist Peter Argyropoulos shares, “Tell Me This” was inspired by the intro guitar riff. It was a practice riff; something I came up with while doing guitar exercises. I fleshed it out with the chorus and brought it to the band. But it felt a little plain and we shelved it. Fast forward a few months. Marc Slutsky had joined the band and brought with him a wonderful energy, not to mention a thumping backbeat. I thought his playing could be a good match for Tell Me This. So, I brought it back to the band during our last rehearsal or two before recording the album. Marc dug in and did exactly as I has hoped, his spirit and chill intensity immediately lifted the song over the top. After reviewing rehearsal recordings that night, he called me and said he thought the song could be a single. Turns out he was right! First one from the album”. In addition to Argyropoulos the rest of the band’s line-up includes keyboardist Brina Kabler, guitarist Kevin Haaland (Skillet,) bassist Adam Kury (Candlebox,) and drummer Marc Slutsky who has toured and/or recorded with Third Eye Blind, Goo Goo Dolls, Peter Murphy, and Todd Rundgren. Runaway Emotions is Sons of Silver’s first full-length following a pair of EPs in 2020’s Doomsday Noises(which sported three spots on the Billboard Active Rock chart) and 2022’s Ordinary Sex Appeal, to be released through their own 4L Entertainment and distributed by Universal Music’s Group’s Bungalow label. In all, the band’s songs have collectively accumulated more than nine million views and streams. Self-produced by the group, the record was mixed by renowned producer/engineer Tim Palmer, whose credits include Robert Plant, David Bowie, and U2 to name a few. “These guys epitomize the essence of classic alternative rock,” says Palmer about working with the band. “Their music is fueled with both power and raw emotion, with genuinely profound lyrics. Their album is a treasure trove of well-crafted, memorable songs and I really enjoyed collaborating with them.” “For me, music is about capturing a spirit, an energy, a feeling,” says bassist Adam Kury. “The record is a warning, if we continue down this path, we’re doomed,” adds Argyropoulos. “But if you look at it from a different angle, we share more than we realize, even if we tend to focus on what separates us. At its best, rock ‘n’ roll brings us together, and celebrates what we have in common”. “Tell Me This” Song Description Tell Me This is an out-of-breath rock 'n' roll rollercoaster thrill. It opens with a winding Johnny Thunders-esque guitar solo, a Stones-like fury and a lyrical nod to the Smiths. With an urgent seduction, the lead vocal rips through an unforgiving story of scorned love and chance meeting. The choruses rise with a glittering background vocal and shake with a lead vocal that nearly unravels. Mixed by Tim Palmer (Bowie, U2, Pearl Jam), the sound is eerily reminiscent and refreshingly new. “Tell Me This” Song Inspiration Quote Tell Me This is an out-of-breath rock 'n' roll rollercoaster thrill. My obsession with colour
Happily occupying my thoughts this week. influencing both what music I am listening and coincidentally what I am reading. I actually ordered the book last Friday and had it on my doorstep the very next day. I wasn't even sure if the order came through. Just finished reading up on "Isabelline", a variant in the grouping of White. I really like the book despite the book reviews. So its coffee table trivia, as some have labelled it, suits me just fine. When it comes to subject that infuses art, science and history I'm all for it and I will continue to weave through it slowly at my discretion as there is no due return library date and in some ways its really a reference book. "The Secret Lives of Colour" by Kassia St Clair" has happily found its place in my household. As for playlist, urged by Billy Sloan radio broadcast suggestions, which I always succumb to. I just enjoy music themed challenges. I am sure that most of the obscure song selections would not get a look in and an Aussie suggesting Aussie songs on a Scottish radio station is kinda taking the piss....loud and proud I guess. Hey the music from this part of the world is pretty impressive and vice versa. I have grown up with an immense appreciation of music coming from Scotland. Here's my colourful full list.....no longer unnecessarily overwhelming a facebook page and on your own blog you have that freedom to do as you will.
Songs about colour in general
Colours fly and Catherine's wheel- Simple Minds- Why I love - its fireworks its the colour and the motion working together.\
Love is full of Wonderful Colour- Icicle Works- An advisory tale with a positive outlook
Jimi Hendrix- Bold as love- Geez how to wrap up so much in 5 minutes. Genius. Concise and yet has the ability to get your brain ticking overtime in regards to imagery and meaning. Guitar and drumming are both out of this world.
Now for those blue songs- Adore the colour
Bullets and Blue eyes- The Silencers, could of picked a few from "A letter to St Paul" such as "Blue Desire" and " I see Red". But when it comes to dynamics, "Bullets and Blues eyes", really kicks in.
Blue Light Disco- Olympia....she's almost Australia's answer to Joni Mitchel and I swear she must of grown up listening to her music. Dealing with the subject of refugees making the life threatening decision to make their way to Australia perilously by boat. The 1st glimpse of land are the lights in the distance, casting its blue haze. Her lyrics are poetry. " And hope falls like cut kite strings Releasing paper parts from their diamond dreams" Again concise and brain clogs churning.
Out of the Blue- Roxy Music- That demented electric violin it takes you to another realm.
No Blue Skies- Lloyd Cole- Soulful melancholia, and makes me think of being 21 again playing it on cassette.
Blue Bell Knoll-Cocteau Twins- Elizabeth Fraser and her angelic gibberish and mystifying atmosphere. Played this song to death when we were holidaying in Toowoomba. Especially at the end of the day after visiting Federation style houses. It was just so apt.
Blue Day- Mi Sex- New Zealand 80's, great voice and sad loss.
New colours
Green- Alex Lloyd- love the song and also love the film clip. Students reactions show what power music has on people from all walks of life.
Silver tongue- Zulu Winter- I don't think this band is around anymore. Sometime great debuts are really a summary of what a band has gathered in their entire lifetime to that point, and to come up with more is a huge challenge.
Red Letter day- China Crisis- much respect, " Diary of a Hollow horse" was released in 1989 is a great record and a band I have followed on and off. "Christian" from earlier on in the 80's is divine. This song easily led onto the next song choice from a different artist and album that had the same song title "Red Letter day"- but I was taken back more so by the bonus song- "Jet Black the Night"- Lostboy aka Jim Kerr.
Golden Brown- The Stranglers- I was 11 when I 1st heard it and its a song that had a huge bearing on why i am equally obsessed with music as I am with colour. I would hide under my bed to avoid household chores just to hear this song. Its about "escapism" and it was.
New Gold Dream- Everything falls into place. Loving this version at the moment.

were you named after anyone? nope. originally my dad wanted to name me Bruno after his grandfather but my mom found a name that she liked and my dad agreed to it!
when was the last time you cried? fuck, good question. tw // suicide: might've been talking about a friend who committed suicide with the therapy group we shared which happened i'd say around a month or so ago.
do you have kids? nah
do you use sarcasm a lot? kinda. more irony than sarcasm if anything.
what's the first thing you notice about people? i can tell if i'm gonna enjoy a person's presence pretty quickly.
what's your eye color? green, although it can be more grey (or brighter) depending on the weather and lighting, apparently.
scary movies or happy endings? i like both. i enjoy bittersweet endings a shitton also, those that are more open or perhaps melancholic while not being outright "bad". sometimes a really good bad ending can be great though (Little Shop of Horrors, for example).
any special talents? i like to think im good at making music, and i do play 4 instruments (at one point i played the trumpet also but i've since forgotten). i'm also pretty flexible and can put both my feet behind my head like a pretzel. also i'm a pretty fast learning.
where were you born? the capital city of buenos aires. i dont remember the hospital's name.
what are your hobbies? listening to and making music, writing and reading, informing myself about other cultures, political stuff, learning about history, drawing (not very well, but still), graphic design, photography, film and occasionally web development.
have any pets? i have a cat who is a demonic goblin and i had a dog who is an absolute angel sent down from the heavens. the dog's still alive but she lives with my grandma now.
what sports do you play/have you played? i played football (or soccer for you filthy americans), went to swimming classes, dipped my toes into volley and i've always wanted to play tennis.
how tall are you? i think around 171 or 172cm. you do the math for imperial units.
favorite subject in school? history, political science, compsci and math occasionally. history because i like informing myself of past events cus it interests me, political science because i like politics and my political science teacher was a marxist so we vibed hard, compsci cause it was easy and we learned some programming by the end and math sometimes cus i like puzzle solving (certain parts were annoying tho).
dream job? making a living out of music, not through some big label tho. just having my own label (or being signed to an independent one), making a modest amount of money, saving up some cash to build a small studio with analog equipment and maybe owning a record shop to promote stuff i like and having a 2nd hand records system that is pretty rare where i live. helping artists i like get promoted here and conversing with labels overseas to help spread the word of music i enjoy outside of my home turf and being able to import artists i like to help them build an audience here as well.
anyways tagging @lukewarmorangejulius cus i don't have any other moots LOL

I’m fourteen. Of course, I’m dramatic! Bria was something else. Barry and the rest of the cast were learning that. She had almost zero filters, which made things funny. It was all-natural, too. After work, they hung out together at their hotel and they included her. George and Matt loved having her with them because she was a reminder of home. For a fourteen-year-old, she didn’t have an attitude and she wasn’t too cool to hang out with them.
Brad was lucky. He admitted he was and he had been since the beginning. Bria was a great kid who never got into any real trouble. Yeah, she did have bad days but he never had to discipline her with a timeout or a grounding. He wished her parents could have met her. They would have loved her. He wondered what part of her she got from them. She was funny, outgoing, friendly, and a character.
She was a performer, who loved having an audience. Even if it was just her father. She had been that way since she was a toddler. He had used his connections to get her an audition at a record label because she needed to be in front of a crowd. She was excited to audition! What was the record label? It was called, Machine Shop Records and it was in Los Angeles. It was more of an independent label but he thought she should start small. Okay!
He had talked to Brad Delson, who was the A&R guy. Brad was willing to take a chance on a fourteen-year-old. What was her name? Bria Pitt. B-r-i-a. Brad then told his business partner and band member, Mike Shinoda about his conversation with Brad. How old was his daughter? She was fourteen. He thought that was young. Maybe she was a musical prodigy or something.
Brad sent in a video of her singing I Want It That Way by the Backstreet Boys. They both watched it. She was cute and yeah, they both agreed she had talent. They looked her up online and discovered she was the newborn baby girl who had been orphaned following a car accident. Even though they were ten years old at the time, they remembered it being national news and their parents talking about her. She had been adopted by Brad Pitt.
That was the last they heard about her since they didn’t keep up with the media. The accident had been a tragedy. A young couple expecting a baby was killed by a drunk driver. It could have happened to anyone but it happened to them. The news showed the face of the newborn baby and she melted the hearts of many people. That little girl was now fourteen years old.
People mostly forgot about her and the accident. Just like they forgot most tragedies that didn’t affect them. They wondered what she had been up to over the past fourteen years.
Bria was still thinking about names for her baby. Brad advised her to pick a name that would work for a newborn, a child, and an adult. A name like Birdie was cute for a baby but not for an adult. It might make it harder for them to get a job. There was also the issue of bullying. She thought about that. What about Mischa? Yeah, that would work. Would that be for a boy or a girl? Both!
“That’s called unisex or gender neutral. How do you spell it?”
“M-i-s-c-h-a. Mischa. I found it online! Mischa Makenzie or Mischa Anthony or Mischa Annabelle.”
“I would look more into the middle names. Mischa Anthony is good.”
She thought for a moment. “Stephanie Margaret.”
“That one I like! Stephanie Margaret Pitt. She could have the nickname, Stevie. Like the famous singer, Stevie Nicks.”
She had no idea who that was. He laughed. She probably would once she heard her voice. Stevie was part of the group, Fleetwood Mac. She was also a solo artist. He went to his laptop and pulled up Landslide by Fleetwood Mac. Her eyes lit up when she heard her singing. Did she recognize her? Yeah!
He laughed. She was going to name her baby Stephanie after Stevie Nicks! If she didn’t like her first name, she could go by Margaret or Maggie. Yeah, that was an option. She was excited that they had a name! He told her to wait, so she stopped. What if she was having a boy? She was still working on that. Did she really want a girl? Yeah, she did because she knew nothing about boys! What about him? He was a boy.
“Boys are gross. They don’t wash their hands after using the bathroom.”
“Am I gross?”
“No, because you’re not a boy! You’re an adult!”
He laughed. “Well, thank you. That makes me feel better.”
She bounced out of his trailer. He had to put his head down on the counter and laugh. His daughter was something else. Later, he told George of the conversation because it was just too funny not to. Kids were like drunk people. They said whatever they wanted. He laughed because it was true. George did like the name she picked out. It was beautiful. Was her middle name for her mother? Yeah, that’s what he was thinking.
She talked about her mother every so often. He wished she could have a mother to guide her through her pregnancy. So did he. He was taking it one minute at a time. It was the only way he didn’t lose his mind. The police were investigating her case of statutory sexual assault. They were interviewing everyone with a connection with the case. She was a child but proving she didn’t give consent was hard.
She went upstairs with him and was alone with him. That might make the case that she did give consent. It wasn’t always fair. That was the hardest part. They wanted justice for her and her baby. The Los Angeles district attorney was also working on the case because it involved a child.
They could do a DNA test after the baby was born but that would take several months. They could also do an amniocentesis but that was risky, so they looked into other options to prove paternity. The district attorney called Brad to talk about the case. He needed to give consent for the DNA paternity test. Would he do it? He would talk to his daughter and see what she wanted to do.
He was still kicking himself because he had been downstairs and didn’t even know. Yeah, it wasn’t his fault but he had to convince himself of that. He felt like it was. What kind of father didn’t know his daughter was being assaulted? During the day, he played the role of Rusty. At night, he sometimes cried himself to sleep because all of the anger came back as his mind replayed everything. He wanted to kill him. But, he couldn’t do that to Bria.
It was his job to protect her but he failed. He apologized to her in his head over and over. You need to talk to someone, William. Yeah, he did. He needed to talk to a professional about his anger and his guilt. Deep down, he knew that Bria was going to be the best mother she could be to her baby. She was going to surprise them all.
Maggie, thank you for the gift you sent me. Bria is the sweetest, most loving daughter I could have been blessed with. She is fourteen and expecting her first baby. I wish you were here to help her. I also wish you were here to just get to know her. There are not enough words in any language to describe her. We talk about you every so often. Right now, I’m lost and I don’t know what to do. I’m not as strong as she is. Even though I’m not religious, please send me a sign that everything will be okay. Thank you, William Pitt

1955 was a pivital year for pop music. Although the big rock and roll breakthrough would happen the following year with the rise of Elvis Presley, '55 showed we were clearly headed in that direction. The year gave us such seminal performances as Presley's own "Mystery Train", Chuck Berry's "Maybeline", Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti" and Fat Domino's "Ain't That a Shame." 1955 also gave the new music it's first number one with "Rock Around the Cock" by Bill Haley and his Comets. Along with the rockers the growing popularity of smooth vocal harmony groups was game changing as well. As R&B moved to the forefront of popular taste, more and more vocals groups found success. The emerging sound, later dubbed "Doo-Wop", was an outgrowth of popular vocal groups from the thirties and forties such as The Ink Spots, The Mills Brothers and The Delta Rhythm Boys.
youtube
The sound came mostly from big cities, where kids in a neighborhood would gather to harmonize without instrumental backing. To accommodate the lead vocals, the other singers would sing a musical counterpoint using nonexistent words such as doo-wah or wop wop. These nonsensical singing parts led to the term Doo-Wop. Groups proliferated in the early fifties but peaked in 1955 with numerous songs and performances that would define the style. No other Doo-Wop song captured the era more than "Earth Angel" by the Penguins. Recorded on the small Dootone label, it made the top ten of the pop charts, a first at the time for an independent record company. One of the best groups were The Cardinals, who recorded for Atlantic Records. Their classic "The Door is Still Open" was written by Chuck Willis.
youtube
Another Atlantic group, The Clovers hit pay dirt with their ever popular "Devil or Angel.”  It was a hit later for pop star Bobby Vee. White artists covering R&B was commonplace in those days, a practice that usurped the sales of originals and denied profits to performers. Another nefarious practice was company execs and disc jockeys tacking their names on to writer credits, which took even more money from the groups themselves. Such was the case with a personal favorite. "Sincerely" by the Moonglows was released by Chess Records but covered for the pop market by The McGuire Sisters who scored a number one hit with the song. DJ Alan Freed took partial writer credit, just as he had done with Chuck Berry's "Maybelline." "Two Hearts, Two Kisses" was covered by both Pat Boone and Frank Sinatra but belonged to The Charms.
youtube
One hit that managed to near impossible task of outselling the cover versions was "Only You" by The Platters. The group had a big year in '55, scoring again with the all time fave "The Great Pretender." Both songs were released by Mercury Records. Another 1955 classic came from a different Chicago label. Vee-Jay Records scored with "At My Front Door" by The Eldorados. Of course any discussion of fifties vocal groups has to include the marvelous group The Five Keys.  After much success on the Aladdin Label, they moved to Capitol and enjoyed even more hits, including the transcendent "Close Your Eyes."
youtube
Doo-Wop would continue into the late fifties, with scores of singers taking up the style, including a lot of white groups. By the sixties it had morphed into the girl group sound, which became a huge part of Motown Records. By that time, the charming innocence of Doo-wop had vanished, relegating it to the past. Back in 1955, however, Doo-Wop had its day, and what a fine day, and year, it was!

Novena on a nocturn
Tumblr media
The follow-up to his first solo album, Bigamy: More Songs from the Monogamy Sessions, was released on Augon Saddle Creek Records. Once this guitar fell into disrepair he played a Gibson Les Paul, he has also used a Gibson RD in the past, but has recently been using a Gibson Melody Maker. During his years with Slowdown Virginia and early years with Cursive, Kasher played a silver Gibson Corvus II guitar. His first solo album, The Game of Monogamy, was released on Octoon Saddle Creek Records. In the fall of 2009, Kasher relocated to Montana to focus more explicitly on his writing. While also working on new music with both Cursive and The Good Life, Kasher has recently taken up writing screenplays. In 2007, Kasher moved from Omaha to Los Angeles, California. Help Wanted Nights was released on September 11, 2007. The Good Life's fourth full-length album, Help Wanted Nights, was an album which Kasher wrote as a soundtrack for a screenplay which he started writing in 2006 and has since finished. After healing, recording on The Ugly Organ began. Because he lacked health insurance, Saddle Creek asked fans for donations to help pay for the cost of the operation. In 2002, Kasher suffered a collapsed lung and was forced to cancel all US tour dates at the time. He then recruited Ryan Fox, Roger Lewis and Stefanie Drootin into the band and released Black Out, Lovers Need Lawyers EP and Album of the Year. He released Novena on a Nocturn on Better Looking Records. Kasher wanted to experiment with different types of lyrics and melodies. The Good Life was originally planned to be a solo project. According to interviews, Kasher went through a bitter divorce in 2000, which led to the regrouping of Cursive, as well as providing the inspiration for The Good Life album Black Out and Cursive's Domestica. Kasher married and moved to Portland, Oregon. Kasher temporarily disbanded Cursive after the departure of guitarist Steve Pedersen (who left to pursue a law degree at Duke University and now leads the Saddle Creek band Criteria). Furthermore, Oberst later sang backup on the song "Staying Alive," from Cursive's 2003 effort The Ugly Organ. In the Bright Eyes song "Nothing Gets Crossed Out," Oberst sings, "Tim, I've heard your album and it's better than good," referring to the album Black Out by Kasher's band, The Good Life, released in 2002 on Saddle Creek Records. They grew up in Nebraska together, went to the same Catholic high school, Creighton Prep. Kasher has a very close relationship with Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes. He also made a brief appearance with the Omaha band Commander Venus and The March Hares. Prior to those bands, Kasher was in a band called Slowdown Virginia. Original drafts of all twelve tracks found on The Good Life’s beloved third album are included.Tim Kasher (born August 19, 1974) is a musician from Omaha, Nebraska, and is the frontman of indie rock groups Cursive and The Good Life, both of which are on the Omaha based record label Saddle Creek Records. Originally included as a bonus disc in the first CD pressing of Album of the Year, this is the first time that the Album of the Year demos have ever been pressed to vinyl. Both tracks that made the band’s debut album and some that didn’t can be found within this set of nine demos. The Novena on a Nocturn demos have never before seen the light of day and provide a glimpse into The Good Life in its most embryonic state. Pitchfork gave it an 8.0, while AP called it one of the “10 essential albums of 2004.” Now back in print for the first time in years and expanded to 2xLP vinyl. It also proved to be The Good Life’s most critically acclaimed album to date. Originally released in 2002, Black Out is back in print on vinyl for the first time in over a decade.Īlbum of the Year brings all that is the sound of The Good Life to fruition–catchy, moody pop/rock that fluctuates between the all-ages club and the smoky cabaret, right alongside sing-along crescendos that spin into cinematic bursts. That change makes itself apparent in this collection of upbeat, keyboard driven pop songs intermixed between sparse, vocal driven stories of drunken disappointment. Sophomore effort Black Out signaled The Good Life's transformation from Tim Kasher solo-effort to a full-fledged band. Originally released in 2000, this is the first time Novena on a Nocturn has ever appeared on vinyl.Ġ6. The debut album from The Good Life finds Tim Kasher turning away from the heavier sounds he had become known for with Cursive and achieving a new depth of voice through acoustic instrumentation and more textured soundscapes. All three Good Life reissues available in one place for $50 or add the demo LPs for an additional $25! The demo LPs are exclusive to our online store and will not be in stores.
