#Also Ragatha was here since almost the start and so the only one who could refute her would be Kingler
I see your 'Jax is an npc' theories and I raise you 'the one who actually is an npc is not Jax but Ragatha instead'. Because I think it being Jax is way too obvious (as we are only at the 2nd episode, if it was obvious at later in the season it would be understandable) and Ragatha would have much more impact on Pomni and everyone else on the cast than anyone else (drawing a parallel with Gumigoo, as well as Pomni not feeling so alone because of both of them).

// Why do you like Ragatha
(Unleash it. Type out the essay.)
// ... the essay warning tag really is going to apply here ^^
ragatha became my favorite character almost instantly the moment she appeared on screen . like i could remember even around the teaser for the show i was pretty fond of her , though i could chalk that up to me liking Any design that is remotely based off raggedy ann
she perfectly fits that oddly specific character type only I love , which is 'grown woman keeps failing no matter how hard she tries and it's marvelous to witness' , like i'm not sure how to explain it too well - she's not really a girlfail or a girlboss in my eyes ... she just . never wins ! and i love that , please keep fucking losing ragatha the amazing digital circus
to break it down , what's apparent in her approximately less than 7 minutes of screentime is that she's a goofy goober who's essentially the voice of reason . she's not emotional like gangle , unreliable like jax and zooble , or out of her mind like kinger . she was essentially the only one who tried to ease pomni into the circus instead of hard-hitting her with the reality as if that won't make her abstract on the spot . it's clear through her interactions with the other characters and how she talks to pomni that she acts like the Pillar of the group , with how compliant she is with caine's adventures and has a comforting presence .
the problem is ... that all of those 'positive' traits are ... Detrimental to her own wellbeing . like i'm sure a part of her positivity is genuine , but her optimism clearly hinges into toxic positivity and her selflessness is taken to the point of people-pleasing and neglecting her own needs . it's clear that she sees her own emotions as a burden that she doesn't want to put on other people .
and . she's dishonest . my girl is dishonest . she often brushes off things as not being as bad as they actually are , she picks her words to cause less conflict as possible , and it doesn't seem like anyone else is aware of her internal turmoil ... even when she's in Literal Pain she still brushes it off as being okay - and she stayed quiet instead of telling pomni that she's upset .
which is ... hilarious . there's just something about nice characters that tell the most lies to me . bonus points if it seems like they're the one who tells the most truths out of the entire group . everything about ragatha is Dishonest .
and it's funny yet again that these Really don't help her at all ! i think it's clear just from promotional material to the pilot that ragatha is meant to be a punching bag . her teaser shows a cleaver Being Thrown At Her , was tripped by jax and Literally Most Of Her Screentime In the Pilot Is Being In Pain , and that's not counting gooseworx's doodles . my girl's fucking Losing .
and it fits her avatar well since she's a Rag Doll ... she's basically never meant to win from the start . she was never the main character .
it interests me so much on how all of these will be taken in the full series since they're all very interesting setups , especially for the setting that the story is set in . i just need to see more of my girl and i wish that a lot of her content isn't limited to ship art . you guys do not understand how desperate i am to see content of ragatha interacting with either caine or zooble . i am Not normal about them .
also i want to kiss her on the mouth //

The Amazing Digital Circus and Escapism
A/N: Just watched and I LOOVEEEE cooking theories for these kinda of Youtube Series even if they turn out to be wrong so Heres the incomprehensible youtube comment I made just now bye
I like to put preliminary theories for series like this and my theory for this is that the circus is some kind of representation of escapism and/or maladaptive daydreaming
1. There's a shit ton of religious symbolism, maybe suggesting that the circus is supposed to be “heaven” although it has underlying hellish elements. For example, cain being portrayed as god and the fact that he doesn’t seem to really get why anyone would want to leave. In contrast, his name references the brother of abel who was cursed by god for his jealous rage. Not only this but, how everything is generally upbeat but there are momentary mental breaks when they are brought back to reality.
2. Reality is often blurred: The characters are real people but its suggested the lines are easily blurred like in the fact that pomni gets attached to a character that was never real to begin with or the fact that cain hints that it can be hard to tell the difference between real characters and npcs
3. Anecdotal but the fact that everyone seems to have a different vision for how the adventures should be played out: Jax wants action and violence, ragatha just wants something stimulating and pomni wants something comforting; the fact that jax gets upset when his vision isn't fulfilled feels very similar to mishaps when maladaptive daydreaming
4. Glitches and the video game setting overall: Idk if its just me but in maladaptive daydreaming its very easy for the mind to wander or mess up, causing a “glitch” in the story which I think is very similar to the glitches in the show
More UTC
5. The concept of VR itself is pretty much one step away from active escapism and although a bit of a stretch, I think the fact that the characters can’t take off their headset references their unwillingness to live in reality rather than actually being forced
6. Character behavior: How pomni goes from extremely weirded out to accepting and even slightly enjoying the circus feels very reminiscent of how it feels to first start maladaptive daydreaming as its an entirely odd thing to do but when you get into it it turns out to be fun and you keep doing it for hours. Ragatha is also interesting because she seems to ignore reality in favor of keeping herself sane, even ignoring devastating truths she realizes when she moves on from her mental breaks so quickly which is pretty much what maladaptive daydreaming is.
7. Exit: When pomni makes it to the exit and sees the desk setup with the headset, she began to lose her mind and instead of going forward to the next door she started going back (i think). I think this was her momentarily remembering how she felt like nothing in real life but in the circus she could be the main character (i think she struggled with feeling like nothing in the real world because of how much she brings it up and sympathizes with gummigoo, probably feeling like an npc irl) though either way she leaves the scene, likely not wanting to remember how her life was before.
8. Abstraction: Since we haven’t seen much of it Im still not completely sure but if I had to guess— I think abstraction is when you completely separate yourself from reality and live in a daydream full time since abstraction means “The quality of dealing with ideas rather than events” which is pretty much what escapism is; I think abstraction is likely a state of complete delusion as is hinted in the show by saying people who abstract are crazy
Overall I think the digital circus is probably either about escapism in general and/or a commentary on how we distract ourselves from serious topics almost as if we are children protecting ourselves from real life.

Had my mind blown away
by a shocking revelation
about the Digital Circus
and Microsoft Office 98's
animated assistant
Each avatar has a parallel in the show
in one avatar
there are a pair of masks
one laughing and one crying
with a red ribbon below them
and the only real animation they have
is on the faces
which somewhat aligns with
the way gangle is animated
in the digital circus
if you take gangles slumped posture
and slow movements
as the best they could really do
with a body that doesn't really move
though the face does animate
in exactly the way the faces do
on the avatar character
however their name is
"Tragedy and Comedy"
owing to the expression on each mask
being reminiscent of the theatre masks
representing these two forms
of theatrical plays
there is also a clown
that looks exactly the same
though unlike how we see them in te show
they are very happy in the avatar
obnoxiously so i might add
maybe being abstracted
is when they start acting out of character
there's also an avatar
that looks just like moodle
and they have much the same character
in the way they act and are animated
even including the way they fall apart
yet again there's a ragatha analogue
yet again they look very much the same
and yet again they act very much the same
there's a barrel of monkeys
again it's the same
there's even a wooden posing doll
which we see several of in the show
there is a character just like kinger
though they are animated differently
their avatar exudes a lot of confidence
and they generally rather slow and deliberate
when it comes to their movements
something that the character in the show
seems to be the exact opposite of
but they did say in particular
that he had become deranged
on the doors there is also crossed out
a yellow dog that may be reminiscent of rover
makes sense since they were a hand me down
an avatar that featured in assistant
but was made for microsoft bob
a forerunner to the program
likewise there is also a ringleader avatar
which would match their counterpart
apart from them being different
at everything above the shoulders
however there was also another avatar
that was just a pair of false teeth
so omitting the eyes for a second
(we'll get back to that later)
it does seem to be a mixture
of the two things put together
but weirdly enough their animation
and very much their character in general
is completely different to either avatar
however it does directly correlate
to one avatar in particular Clipit
almost as if clippy
ripped the ringleaders head off
stuck the teeth avatar in their place
and started controlling the pair of them
like a puppet from the inside
now there is a rabbit avatar
but they are wildly different
to te character we see in the show
in fact Jax looks a lot more like
a certain rubberhose animation character
from a certain rather well known company
who canonically has a way of
entering fictional worlds
they don't belong in
and causing a lot of chaos
by doing whatever they want
for their own enjoyment
much to the distress
of the characters of said world
but in doing so
causes said world to break down
which they try to cover up
to avoid being detected
as an outsider
even pomni has an avatar analogue
though this might require you
to stretch your imagination a little
since there is no jester character
but there is a beach ball
that has 6 segments around it
that alternate red and blue
and if you looked at it
from the top down
you would see the same pattern
that can be seen in the character's eyes
which also explained the stripey design
the rest of the character has
but just a minute here
the face of the character
looks exactly like another avatar
a character called "The Period"
that is a.. red.. dot...
oh dear
one obviously absent character
in this entire lineup
is einstein
but there may be a copyright issue on that
merlin the wizard is also absent
which is distinctly odd
since there's no reason they should be
even the gloinks feature in a fashion
there are random 2D shapes
the same shape and color
as the things we see in the show
but they are just background pieces
and have no eyes
but move in very much the same way
of course you might ask what the bubble is
well you might have to twist your brain a little
but the assistant character
communicates to the user
via speech bubbles
now hold on there's more to this
if you take the way the dialogue is structured
and the way the software progresses
and interacts with the user's input
then the way the bubble is acting
is very similar to how that opperates
being helpful but controlling in a way
much like how it interrupts Caine
while he is trying to make a length dialogue
oh i think we can relate to that
also that line Caine says
"oh bubble, you always know
how to make me say this exact sentence"
would definitely make sense in this context
back to Microsoft Bob,
the forerunner to the assistant
in that game there is a world
that very much resembles
the overworld of the game we see
there is a lake there and a fairground
but where Bob's house is supposed to be
there is now the bigtop tent
also in Bob are various set pieces
that can be found around the tent
the building blocks with the rainbow arches
the corridor where the characters' bedrooms are
a door that leads to a carousel
a door that leads to room full of water
a door that a punching glove comes out of
and a door that leads to a bathroom
not to mention that Bob's house
has lots of framed pictures on the walls
and both the moon and the sun
can be seen through windows
in Bob's house
and if that's not a coincidence
i don't know what the hell is
Caine's dialogue is also very reminiscent
of exactly the way the assistant avatar
actually talks in the software
including nerding out on the legal issues
and chastising you for entering a name
that has a curse word in it
Caine also mentions a ball pit
which was a hidden easter egg
in Microsoft Bob
Also, on the release of Windows ME
they removed the assistant character
after many negative reviews
and there was a magazine article
calling for its return
that had the following image
as the front cover
though it's not exactly what we see in the show
the grime is indeed very similar looking
and the bust out and burned drive
can also be seen on the computer in the show
not to mention the mouse being split open
but just to confirm it even more
the warped power strip is also in the shot
now if you look at the headset in the image
it looks very similar to this specific headset
by Microsoft
that was supposed to be available
for use in Windows 98
but it never came to fruition
and wouldn't you know it
but the reason it never did
is because the microsoft assistant popups
crashed the software it was using
also if you'll look to the right you'll see
the old design of pc tower ibm used to use
or somewhat an approximate to it
and wouldn't you know it
but that itself was the very first iteration
of the microsoft assistant
now we are still missing some specific characters
those being a 2x2 jigsaw puzzle
but as that was the logo for the assistant
i can understand why it's missing
a 3D model of the planet earth
well that's just kinda boring
bonsi buddy
well that might be to avoid vinesauce fans
but there's seemingly no reason why
the avatar known as F1 should be missing
except.. maybe the name..
you see in windows 98
when using the assistant
by typing the button combination
F1, F5, F9, F4
quickly in succession
you unlock a game known as
"software developer hunter"
where you basically play spyhunter
except you are hunting down
the developers of the assistant software
while playing as one of the avatars
killing them in a cartoony explosion
while they scream a very familiar scream
in fact it's this one that pomni makes
after seeing the computer
just before going through another door
not only that
but when you play this game
the avatar characters
say specific dialogue
on killing the developers
WE ARE SPECIAL TOO
YOU WILL RESPECT THE RECTANGLES
DONT SKIMP ON THE DATA
WHAT DO THESE PEOPLE DO AGAIN
SO YOUR NAME IS MISSPELLED WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT
CIRCLES ARE GOOD TOO BUT THEYRE NOT RECTANGLES
PIVOT PIVOT PIVOT CANT GET ENOUGH
MALICIOUS PIXIES
A CHART SAYS SO MUCH EVEN THOUGH IT DOESNT REALLY SAY ANYTHING BECAUSE IT CANT TALK
THANKS FOR SHARING
LAST BUT NOT LEAST BUT ALSO NOT COMPRESSED SPAM
and if you wonder why i mention these
in the episode one of the characters
says each of these lines
maybe with a couple of words changed
here and there
like Gloink in place of rectangle
for example
although interestingly
Pomni is the only speaking character that doesn't
and of these lines Jax says most of them
and even more interesting than that
considering the connection
to the assistant software being phased out
around the turn of the millennium
take a wild guess when
this particular easter egg game
was actually released
in fact all of the stuff we've seen
not only includes stuff
in a version of windows 98
set just before the millennium
and just before they were phased out
but it noticibly does not include
one particular piece of software
and this might be the clue
that reveals the whole thing
at the turn of the millennium
there was a big fear of that
when the clocks rolled over
to the new century
it would cause a bug in the software
that would break people's computers
and so there was an update
that was sent out to all PC's
to change the software
and prevent this from happening
said software made certain changes
to these assistant programs
and those changes
are completely absent
and not only that
but in the office space
when Pomni is running through it
the yellowing computer
is the only one
of a design that predates
when this feature was made as standard
not only that
but in the various rooms she runs through
you can see the exact tech used
specifically for updating PC's
to prevent them from the millennium bug
almost as though they had just been
preparing for such an event
moments before
whatever happened to Pomni
and on a side note
i wonder what else microsoft released
just before the millennium
yep a computer watch
not quite the design of Caine's
but it is also roughly square
which in case you didn't know
was very unusual at the time
and why yes
that is the case for the watch
sitting on the mousepad
on the computer desk
with the keypad for it
sat on top of it
in case you didn't notice
(in not exactly to scale)
so i think i'll take a sip of my wine here
for i do believe i
but that's just a..
Mat? wanna play me out?

Girl Genius Liveblog #199
UPDATE 199: Everyone vs Evil Train
Last time the Beast – apparently that’s the name – was released. Thanks a lot, Margarelotta. Now it’s going around, destroying everything in its hunger for metal. Let’s see how everyone deals with this!
The Beast has already claimed victims. Some of the unfortunate guards at the armory had armors, and it sucked everything. I don’t think the evil train would care about sparing the guys inside the armors, so...yeah, they’re as good as dead. What will be its next move? Go search the engines, perhaps? And in the meantime catch more people with armors?
An option to have stuff to fight back is to use stuff from the vaults. You know, the things and beings the monks are keeping locked down because they’re dangerous. That’s bound to go well. If it was anyone other than Agatha, I’d be very worried, but since it’s Agatha...she’ll know what to do. I’m looking forward to finding out what she’ll do.
The vaults look pretty fortified, but the train got through with no trouble. Brother Ulm tells everyone not to touch anything and also to keep an eye out for Margarelotta. It doesn’t take long to find her.
That’s a shame. I liked her, even after she turned out to be calculating and definitely not as defenseless as she made herself seem. She also caused the current plot afflicting Agatha and pals. I’m glad she did, this seems like an interesting one! But yeah, it’s a pity she’s dead.
She sure seems to be largely intact despite being, you know, attacked by a train.
What Margarelotta did was search through the vaults to try to find whatever it is she was looking for. The vault she was opening so smugly didn’t have what she was looking for, it just held a silly-looking reptile. I’m sure it’s very awful if it’s locked here. Frustrated, she ran to every vault, opening them and possibly letting free a lot of horrors. Thanks, gal, way to go.
That’s the book she stole! Interesting! I see a couple initials (?) on the cover. They don’t fit either Tarvek or Tweedle’s last names. Or Seffie or Margarelotta or her husband’s last names, either. Hmmm...I can’t think what this could mean. Perhaps the key would give further clues?
Agatha claims that book is hers. Oh, of course. Those are the initials of Ragatha Rheterodyne, how could I not know that. It’s possible she’s telling the truth, that book was shown in Agatha’s property before and I just forgot. I sure know my memory isn’t the best. Still, how did Tweedle get his hands on that book?
Before Agatha can give some much-needed explanations, Violetta arrives, announcing she found something. She also enters in denial when she sees Margarelotta’s dead body, and takes off the handkerchief off the corpse’s face. It can’t be a pretty picture.
I still question how the evil train killed her and only mangled her face. Either the train somehow dodged her just enough to leave her mostly intact, or she got unlucky when it sped out of the vault.
The only reason why Violetta is denying so much she’s dead is because she treated her in a nice manner...in the very twisted standards these families have.
This family is the worst family ever, hahaha
Apparently now there are more pages in the book. Perhaps Margarelotta or Tweedle wrote more pages to put in the book? I wonder what they added.
Time to start planning how to capture a relatively intelligent train who is evil and wild. Using the same tricks that captured it before are unlikely to work, they’ll have to think something new. For example, how about using a freaking magma train! Violetta vetoes it because she’s too reasonable. Instead, they’ll modify the stuff used to lure it, instead they’ll trap it. When put like that it’s a rather intelligent plan, I’m all for it.
If it has volcanoes it automatically is great. Lighten up, Violetta, this is the world of MAD SCIENCE. This is almost a requirement in a volume in this world!
When they note some of the doors to the vaults resemble cells...it makes me wonder how many may be sentient beings. In a way the basement of this fort is like a prison for some really dangerous creatures, it’s likely the train isn’t the only resident of this area.
Despite the threat of the Beast eating everything and possibly having razed all over the yards by now, Agatha isn’t worried, because she’s already plenty experienced with all kinds of nasty things and unexpected events, it’d take something really bad to throw her off her groove—oh my god it’s Tweedle.
As expected, her friends aren’t very happy Tweedle is here, Zeetha tries to attack and gets intercepted by Tybalt, while Agatha demands to know what Tweedle will do after they all work together to defeat the Beast. Tweedle’s answer isn’t what I expected, admittedly.
Hmmm...is he telling the truth about helping Agatha get to Paris? There’s a chance he’s lying or there’s a catch here. Perhaps he’d take Agatha to Paris as long as she stays with him? I imagine that, if he wants to let her do her thing, the one condition would be to have her nearby so he can control her. No way he’d let her go away if there was a risk she wouldn’t be under his thumb. Once he tells her in a very condescending manner to not worry about his motives of doing so right now, they get started. You fool, Tweedle, I’m sure Agatha can multitask! She can work on stopping the train and worry about your motives!
Tweedle is having the idea everyone else had by now: use the stuff here in the vaults to catch the train. Then he gets a more original idea: what if, by using magnetism. They can affect how the train thinks? I’m not sure that’ll work because if magnetism could change that then it’d risk changing its own thoughts every time it attracts metal, but it’s worth a try. You never know what will be useful.
I’ll end the update here for the time being. Thank you for reading!
Next time: in six updates
