Re-review: Anything Goes 2022, Barbican
Re-review: Anything Goes 2022, Barbican
Less of a review and more of a list of things I loved about going back to see Anything Goes again at the Barbican “You really know how to fill a girdle” I didn’t need much prodding to go and see Anything Goes again, especially when second row tickets for £20 were in the offing but it was also great to see the show from a different angle. With a company and stage of this size, the expansiveness of…

➤ WANTED CONNECTION: COULD IT BE RIGHT FOR YOU?
Connection to: Noah Wright Character Name: Leigh Murphy (Last name is negotiable, first name is not) Face Claim: Alexandra Shipp suggested, v negotiable but Leigh must be a POC Age: 32/33 Status: Any Species: Must have been born human, but could have been turned into another species no earlier than 21/22 depending on her age
➤ PERSONALITY
While Leigh's current personality as an adult is up for discussion, her personality growing up is pretty defined. She was sweet and naive, made moreso by Noah's attempts to shelter her. Leigh loved fairytales, magic, and adventure, a love that was furthered by Noah's framing of their life together as an adventure. She had a kind heart and was more honest and generous than her brother, though she did learn to pull various tricks and cons with Noah when he framed them as games. Leigh was innocent, silly, romantic, and kind, all qualities that Noah was determined to protect.
➤ BACKGROUND
Leigh's parentage is up for discussion, but somehow she ended up in a foster home in Kentucky by at least age five. The foster parents, the Millers, were not bad people, but were known to be willing to take troubled children and had taken on more than they could handle. Leigh is four or five years younger than Noah, and was already in the home when Noah was placed there at age ten. They were the only children in the home under fourteen. The older kids had been picking on Leigh, but when Noah arrived he took the attention off of her, and the two of them bonded quickly. They shared a room, where Noah read her fairytales at night, and Leigh passed him comforting notes under the door when the older kids locked him in closets, which they did frequently. Noah became fiercely protective of Leigh, and when he became fed up with the older children's abuse at age twelve and decided to run away, he took Leigh with him so that she would not become a target again. Leigh was seven or eight at this time.
Noah and Leigh grew up on the street together after that. Noah was a clever little criminal, who did his best to provide and care for the two of them and shelter Leigh from the dangerous, dark things they faced. He did her hair, taught her as best he could from library books and his own limited knowledge, learned to patch her clothes and her favorite stuffed crocodile. He framed their life on the streets as an adventure from one of her fairytales, and protected her from his own unsavory activities as best he could until she was a teenager. When she was a preteen, Noah began allowing her to help him with cons and tricks, and Leigh often acted as a sweet-faced distraction while her brother picked pocket, stuffed his backpack with supplies in stores, or picked locks. Noah did not tell her when he began doing sex work, but did let her help when he was dealing drugs. Noah and Leigh were an unconventional family unit, and Noah was extremely loyal to her--and only to her, willing to betray or bail on just about anyone else who entered their lives.
In her late teens, Leigh began to fall in with different friends, who Noah considered a bad crowd--though whether they were actually bad or not is up for debate, since he would likely have worried about her falling in with anyone. When Noah was twenty-six and Leigh was twenty-one or twenty-two, she disappeared on him, leaving in the night without saying goodbye. Noah spent the next several years searching for her, both betrayed by her leaving and terrified that something might have happened to her. He came to the island following a tip that she was there, and then not long later left again following her trail. When he found her, they had a massive fight, that ended with her sending Noah away, effectively shattering his sense of self. Leigh's reasons for leaving Noah, and later sending him away are up for discussion! Noah was human last time they saw each other.
➤ HOW ARE THE CHARACTERS CONNECTED?
Leigh is Noah's foster sister, who he effectively raised on the street. They were each other's only family until she left him without notice.
➤ ANYTHING ELSE?
I'm open to plotting and figuring out details about Leigh's later life, but Leigh is a very integral part of Noah's life, so I am very particular about some things. I love angst, so their relationship can be full of all kinds of turmoil, with the understanding that anything terrible and angsty must have a road back to Leigh being okay, and their relationship being friendly/tolerant, at least.
Please contact Bird to discuss this connection further.

Review: Anything Goes 2022, Barbican
Review: @AnythingGUK @BarbicanCentre Not enough @bonnie_langford (when is there ever...?) but a hugely enjoyable bit of much needed escapist entertainment with a superlative Kerry Ellis
My favourite show of 2021 returns with added Bonnie Langford! And an excellent Kerry Ellis now at the helm of Anything Goes at the Barbican “Times have changed And we’ve often rewound the clock” There’s little surprise really that several venues turned to classic musical theatre last year as a respite from the time that had gone before. But saying you’ll put on a crowdpleaser and actually putting…
