Alana’s first opened in Mar Vista (West Side of LA). The WEHO location is their second. It’s a great space with locally roasted coffees, good pastries, and a camping-friendly environment.

Score: 43/50

Food: 5/5 – There is no kitchen but they will warm up your pastries. They have gluten-free and vegan pastries too. The pastry case has croissants, muffins, coffee cake. The cold case has chia pudding and overnight oats. The vegan mushroom & cheese croissant was really good – not as flaky as a regular croissant but it still had a buttery flavor and lots of mushrooms. The vegan cheese tasted like real cheese.

Coffee: 5/5 – They roast their own beans and offer filter coffee (batch brew, cold brew, pour over), espresso drinks, matcha, hot chocolate, chai, etc. Enjoyed the cappuccino though it was on the small side. Several pour over options, starting at $8.

Wi-fi: 5/5 – Free, unlimited, password is posted. There is a sign that suggests that you purchase a coffee or other item for every two hours you plan to spend there (seems fair).

Ambiance: 5/5 – A narrow space with multiple seating areas, cute bird wallpaper, plants, wood counter. There’s a nice outdoor patio too.

Noise: 4/5 – Music isn’t too annoying or too loud

Plugs: 5/5 – Lots

Parking: 1/5 – Going to be tough to find, metered parking on Robertson. We found free two hour street parking but there isn’t much of it.

Comfort: 4/5 – Can spread out but the tables are small, except for the communal one, and most of the seating isn’t padded. Great A/C.

Bathroom: 4/5 – One unisex for customers, clean and pleasant

Art: 5/5 – Multi-panel painting, like waves, it’s nice

Tips: They also sell coffee beans, mugs, and merchandise.

Alana’s first opened in Mar Vista (west side of LA). The WEHO location is their second. It’s a great space with locally roasted coffees, good pastries, and a camping-friendly environment (outlets, free wi-fi, restroom). Parking will be a challenge.

They roast their own beans and offer filter coffee (batch brew, cold brew, pour over), espresso drinks, matcha, hot chocolate, chai, etc. There were several pour over options, starting at $8.

There is no kitchen but they will warm up your pastries. They have gluten-free and vegan pastries too. The pastry case has croissants, muffins, coffee cake. The cold case has cold drinks, chia pudding, and overnight oats.

Vegan mushroom & cheese croissant ($5): Really good – not as flaky as a regular croissant but it still had a buttery flavor and lots of mushrooms. The cheese tasted like real cheese. I’m amazed that good vegan croissants exist. Also enjoyed the sprinkle of poppyseeds on top.

Cappuccino ($4.50): on the smaller side but nice foam art, right balance of foam to milk to espresso, great flavor

We enjoyed camping here though the tables are small. It’s such a cute place with multiple seating areas, cute bird wallpaper, plants, and a wood counter. There’s a nice outdoor patio too. They also sell coffee beans, mugs, and Alana’s apparel.

This past weekend, I ventured over to Venice to get a bit of work done at one of my favorite coffee shops in LA, Alana’s Coffee Roasters, which prides itself on being a “community-focus shop with humble origins” and also makes a mean iced matcha. While standing in line, I complimented a fellow patron on her shoes and after chatting for a brief moment and getting her permission, she decidedly became the subject of my week two ethnography.

I was surprised to discover that this was Marianne’s first trip to Alana’s, as her beachy and care-free manor perfectly matched this West-side spot. On a similar quest to find a coffee shop that would provide a tranquil atmosphere for a research project, she went off of a friend’s recommendation and ended up at Alana’s. Marianne adopted a similar ethos to those who study and work at home: that she was in need of a change in scenery in order to be productive. And it was undeniable that Alana’s spacious, shaded patio, and plethora of backed seating options provided the environment was seeking.

When I asked her about the frequency in which she attends coffee shops, Marianne bashfully noted that “unfortunately for her bank account” caffeine runs were a regular occurrence, a notion that coincides with Millennials over-spending on goods providing instant gratification and under-investing in their future. She

further mentioned that she was willing to make regular coffee purchases even if it meant that she had to cut back on other expenses but didn’t carry too much guilt as she was spending less on going out and attending concerts. Interestingly, in response to my question about her go-to order, Marianne noted that her coffee addiction was relatively new, and a product of her quarantine project to become her family’s in-house barista.
